  1. Some of the members here know that my Aunt Vikki was in a motorcycle accident back in April in Reno, Nevada where She lived. She was riding Her HD Heritage when she was hit by a tire that came across the center devider on the freeway. She passed away while I was in Ft. Collins from her injuries. She was a remarkable woman, She gave me my first motorcycle ride 45 yrs ago and I was hooked. She was 75 when She passed and had been riding for over 50 yrs. She was the first woman in Nevada to get a motorcycle license. She was a member of the Blue Knights in Reno and was a member of the Reno Ramblers M.C. She had many friends in the Motorcycle community in Reno, the state of Nevada and the State of California. Today they had her service at Sparks Marina. I wasnt able to attend but my Mom did. She said there were over 2000 people there and Hundreds of Motorcycle's if not over a 1000. She carried a metal flask on Her bike with water where ever She went. They took the flask and filled it with Her ashes and after the service today they took Her for a final Ride. Wish I could of went for that final ride with you. I will miss seeing you riding that purple electra glide with the white seat. But dont worry we will ride together again one day. Love Ya Dooder
  2. I have Metzeler ME880 Marathon tires on the front and the rear of my 1984 VR. These tires are not very old and have alot of tread left on them. I have owned the bike for a year and know that the tires may be 3 years old based on info from the previous owner. Now to my question. I noticed on the rear tire about half way up the sidewall a wavy thin crack extending about 4 to 6 inches aong the tire. This pattern continues around the tire in the form of a black line for maybe 20 inches. I am do not know the construction of these tires. Do I need to be worried about this tire blowing out on me while riding? I would appreciate some advice as I do not want this tire to cause any problems while riding.
  3. Hello all. I just happened across Freebird's post (http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1066), and was so happy that I did. I am a little concerned over these issues (especially the Stator & the 2nd gear issue, as I assume that these two would be the costliest to rectify) because I just recently purchased an '83 Venture Royale, and will be picking it up from the dealership, tomorrow. I am not mechanically inclined, and really don't have the 'depth of pocket' by which to have any such needed work performed by a professional. I am sure that this will give lead for many to wonder why I chose to involve myself in such a pastime - when being positioned within such narrow financial parameters. The answer is, simply, that I love biking. I know that the bike I'm getting is 24 years old, and that parts DO wear out . But I am stepping out, on faith, that (first) the Good Lord will grant me safety & well-being, and (secondly) that I will know a decent amount of riding time before any heavy repairs are warranted. I will have a 30 day warranty period, and I was wondering if there was a way that the Stator, and shift assembly could be tested/checked for their levels of worth, and capability. Or would the situation with the Stator be such that you wouldn't know of a problem with it until it went? As far as riding the bike to tell how the shifting goes with it, I (naturally) have no experience with it - so I'd have no way of telling whether or not it felt right . I remember, 15-16 years back, how I had occasion to ride a number of different bikes. Some were very easy shifters, while others were not, and I would have no way of knowing what is characteristic for any particular bike - as opposed to something being wrong. Any direction in this matter would be greatly appreciated, and I offer many advanced thanks.
  4. During my 5 day trip I noticed my rstd doesn't always start with the first push of the starter button. Very seldom does it start on the first try. My Vulcan starts always with the first try. Is this usual? Also my buddie was riding an rstd and his didn't start first time many times either. Any comments on this. 5. Has anyone found a good bike to bike radio system to use while riding with other bikes. Just did a 5 day trip all over the smokies and N.Ga mts and realized a good radio system would have been nice to communicate while riding at times. Would appreciate any input on this. 6. Some of my riding buddies were complaining that they couldn't see my turn signals during daytime riding. They said they were just to dim. So, I dug out some dual-intensity LED lights that I had bought for another project (they are really bright...some of the best I found at any price), made some brackets to mount them on my saddlebag rails, and have them wired as running and turn signal lights. I'm happy about how they turned out. Now everyone behind me can actually see what I'm doing. give me a few minutes and I'll have the pix uploaded to my gallery.
  7. I took the Experienced Rider Coarse yesterday on the Venture. I have been riding 35+ years. It was quite challenging but fun anyway. We have 5 instructors in our riding and I have done most of the exercises in our training sessions but not officially signed up for the class. It cost $125 and well worth the money. They pointed out some of my bad habits and helped me with my technique. The "box" and the "offset weave" were the hardest but I made it through with out dropping the bike at all. I plan on taking the instructors coarse and get my certificate to teach. No matter how long you have been riding this is a good thing to do every one has room to improve. Tips: bring something to drink and a snack, don't have a full tank of gas (too much extra weight), relax and just do it. I found I tried to hard and tensed up on some exercises and did much better after I relaxed. Have fun and enjoy the ride. Rod
  8. Ok... I'm sure someone has the answer... How do I hook up my cell phone to run thru the headset on my bike. I have a 1st Gen with Chatterbox headsets and it seems like it only takes minutes after I start riding that people need to get ahold of me... What are you guys doing?

    bumpy ride

My wife doesn't like to 2 up on my 93 like she did on my 83. She says it is too hard. I have tried to use different pressures in the CLASS as well as in the dampers, but as a driver I didn't notice any difference untill I was riding on a bumpy road, even at slower speeds, it was hitting the bumps so hard it felt unstable. Are there situations that the rear shock gets stuck and it acts like a hard tail? How can I tell?

    leather

I was just wondering if leather or some of the other material would be better for protection. I have seen lots of jackets made of different materials at the bike shops and got to thinking would some of the other material be cooler and offer just as much protection as leather? I want to start replacing our riding gear with new stuff and wondered what we should go with. I am going to get new modular helmets and red wing boots so what about gloves, jackets and chaps?
  12. I dont know if Im getting old or what but Ive been doing some home work on exhaust baffels because my bike seems to be a little to loud for me on the e-way. Its great around town but I dont do that much around town riding. So after a long search and some talking to reps Im going to try these baffels in my 4-2-4 http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=&catId=403&productId=p431326&leafCatId=40304&mmyId=

  14. Almost 20 yrs ago I found a full face Kiwi helmet at a garage sale for $5. You may remember them as they were semi popular at the time. The helmet was almost new and was sold in the original box. The only thing wrong was with the visor. It moved up and down freely. I didn't think much of it and proceeded onto the Boulder turnpike (Colorado) riding my trusty KZ650. Anyone who has ridden this stretch of road knows it can get mighty windy. This was one of those days. I was riding about 75mph when a gust of wind hit me just right, shot up under the helmet, snapped my neck backward and the visor opened. I have never been as scared as when this happened. I veered off on the shoulder and shut it down safely. It took about an hour before I was ready to ride on and the Kiwi was later used for target practice. To this day I will not wear a full face helmet. Silly, but I hate them.
  15. While my wife Denise loves riding on the back of my 1st Gen she has one constant complaint: After about 50 miles her left foot falls asleep. At first I thought it was due to the position of my big riding boots on the left peg, forcing her to move her foot in an uncomfortable position on the back left board, but the same thing happens when I have my feet on the front highway boards. She usually wears a real comfortable pair of riding boots but the same problem appears when she is wearing high top sneakers. I inspected the rubber mounts of both rear boards and they seem appropriate. Has anybody heard a similar complaint or encountered a similar problem? Thanks in advance, Klaus
  16. Video I took in May 2006: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfV_nNlcKkA]YouTube - Harrison, AR[/ame] I was on my Concours. There is a lot of great riding around Harrison. Mark
