  1. I am going to replace my Cobra slash cut drag pipe mufflers (soon to be for sale) with the original OEM mufflers on my 97 Royal Star Classic. When I look at the parts diagram (see attached) for the exhaust, it looks as if I need to replace as many as 10 gaskets just by changing mufflers (parts 2; 6(2); 10; 14(2); 18(2) and 22(2)) at a cost of approx $160 delivered which is almost as much as I paid for the OEM mufflers! Does anyone know exactly which gaskets truly need to be replaced when changing back to all 4 OEM mufflers? I'd obviously like to have them on-hand when I do the swap. Thanks!
  2. I decided to make some windshield lowers out of diamond plate aluminum. I think they turned out pretty good. Let me know what you think. I have some ideas for a few more items on the bike to be replace with this diamond plate.
  3. I have to replace the rear shock on my bike and would like some advice about what to replace it with. I have spoken to Buckeye performance and was quoted $665 delivered to a Detroit address...$691 to Ontario....for the Works Performance shock and $585+ tax for the OEM here in Ontario. Which would be the best option? And is Buckeye's price comparable with any other dealer. I trust any advice you may have. Thank you Ian
  4. I need to replace my home printer - currently have an old Brother HL-1440 and it makes such dirty copies. Suppose I will need to replace the drum to clean it up and that is rather expensive - probably more than the printer is worth. So. I wonder if anyone has good advice about a home printer. Inkjet? Seems that the cost per page is way too much. Laser? We don't need color. Prefer wireless capable. Has to be budget sensitive. Wonder what you recommend?
  5. As I slowly get to the end of my restoration, I find another thing here or there that causes my project to slow down... I got the carb and ignition issues worked out! Replacing the diaphragms fixed the "lean" condition. Cleaning the plugs fixed the ignition issues as I had to use the enrichener to keep the engine running before fixing the carbs. However, I now noticed some very nice cracking in the rubber "half-moons" plugs on the valve cover gaskets. I also have noticed a little oil on the engine...not much, but enough to know that the valve cover gaskets are going. What parts do I need to replace when doing the gaskets? What components do I need to remove to access the valve covers? I already have ALL the plastic off. I will also be removing the carbs (again) soon to replace the carb mount boots (very tiny leak found). I've heard that 2nd Gen valve cover gaskets will work on 1st Gens. Is this accurate? Thanks in advance! WHCC
  6. My Air Cutoff Diaphragms are Fubared. Do I need to spend the extra $100 to replace all four? What is their effect on driveability?
  7. any one used this, have had to replace water pumps on three of my veh this last yr
  8. I had the bike on the lift to do some repairs and noticed a small 3/16" deep slice/gash in the sidewall. of my Elite II. I recently replaced a virtually new Avon due to a nail that friends convinced me to replace... Dang, this is getting old. It says the sidewall is 3 plies. Still lots of tread on this sucker. I know I should probably replace it and be safe but are the wife and I really worth the expense? I'm in a dither with this......thoughts!
  9. Hello everyone: This is my first post and I am sure that I am not doing this correctly so please bear with me. My basic question is this. Is there a good quality horn replacement out there, that does not require rewiring and will basically fit into the stock placements. My horn on the right side does not work and I would like to replace it but I do not want to deal with wiring and similar issues right now. Any help would be appreciated. - Thanks MM
  10. For those of you that have replaced your tall(OEM) windshield with a shorter one, have you noticed any difference in the way the bike handles? By that I mean, does it reduce the buffeting effect? Can you tell a difference at high speed(in excess of 80 mph)? What type did you get to replace the OEM? Just your general thoughts. I'd like to know because I'm thinking of replacing mine in the near future.
  11. Got the new battery in, added some fresh gas, these things dont run real well on a strong fix of Sea Foam, but once I got the gas in and had her fired up she ran just like she did before I took her apart. Still have a few small items to take care of, the main one being the rear brakes.........aint got none, I forgot to replace the brake fluid after I did the brakes......DUH. other than that she is road ready, I put about 10 miles on her, didnt want to take her to far from home just in case, besides I didnt have the new license sticker on it.......... So here are the final pics.
  12. I am planning to replace my clutch, but after reading all the threads on the subject I am a little confused. I am planning on using the Barnett clutch spring and plates. The service manual calls for a new o-ring, ball and retaining wire. Do you use these parts with the Barnett clutch upgrade? The thread in the tech section said not to use a few parts but I'm not sure if it was for the Barnett or not. After 61k of riding 2 up and towing a trailer it has begun to slip and I don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon, so I am going to replace every thing. I should of had the dealer do this when they changed the clutch basket a couple of years ago. I live a long way from anywhere I can get parts so I need to have everything before I start. Thanks for your help.
  13. Wow Ive just been reading some of the post on the metz 880 I wasnt aware of all these porblems. I have a set on my 07 VRS and had no trouble at all in fact Iwas looking to see if anyone had put the new upgrade on theres. THe wider one the 180,s on the back. I have 15k on mine and am looking to replace them with another set. Also just woundering if which part of the country you live in makes a different, the temp you ride in and the road construction.
  14. I searched but I couldn't find an answer. Everyone talks about doing this but no one has described an easy way to do it. After taking off all the plastic fairing pieces and radiator grill cover, it looks to me like you have to loosen the radiator to get at the thermostat housing. There has to be an easier way. When my VR sits overnight (and it is getting colder at night), I have a leak from the O-ring on the thermostat housing. While I am in there doing that, I will replace the thermostat (NAPA substitute) and all the other O rings that I could get from a Yamaha dealer. The only two I couldn't get (and they are the same) are for the elbow fitting (# 21 on the Yamaha Water Pump Part drawing) -- is there a commercially available substitute that anyone knows of? Last question on this subject, are all the hoses standard sizes? I'd like to replace all the front ones at the same time I take out the thermostat housing.
  15. As part of trying to figure out my silly radio problem I purchased a radio control unit (the head on the handlebars) for my RSV and I ended up needing to replace the radio unit itself. So I have a control if anyone needs it - I'll put it in the classfides later when I have pictures and a video of it working (I just need to get them off of my camera, which is at the house right now). I bought it from Pinwall on ebay for ~200+S&H. It works fine, I plugged it in and it works just like it did in their pictures/videos. It was off of a 2005 RSV with 40k. I'm looking to recover most of my expense, but since it is not straight from them I'll take a little less than the $200 and I'll cover shipping (within the US). Let me know if you need one and we can settle on a fair price. I'm going to hang on to it for a while (before I put it up on fleabay) just in case I need to replace the one on my bike too, but for now, I'll hang on to it unless someone on here needs one.
  16. Hi there our bike will not stay running. have replaced the battery and it only runs for the amount of the charge and then dies. I have taken it apart examined the connections and everything looks good. Has anyone had to replace a stator. Also has anyone been able to get their hands on a repair manual for a 2006. Thanks in advance
  17. As some of you may know I have been fighting the busted trunk bag problem for a couple of months now and am close to having completed (purchased used bottom on e-bay for $200.00, having to dismantle the backrest, replace the broken bracket welded to fram for bottom screws). All that is left is to attach the frabrecated bracket to the bike frame and put the screws through the metal and rubber plates in the bottom of the trunk bag. Just learned today (after reading a reply to a post from last week) that this is a Yahama recall and they will fix (don't know if they just furnish the plaltes or replace the trunk or what but am taking the busted bottom and license receipt to the local dealer to see what is involved). Just wanted to alert any other 99 owners to check with a dealer first if you have this problem (wish I had checked first).
  18. If you have been following the MotorKote tracking and comments thread, you know that I have purchased an I basket to replace on my own. My RSV is a 99....Yamaha has a good warranty, but 10 years is probably asking a bit much to have them replace a basket now. Anyway, my bike was purchased in June through ebay. I did not ride it prior to purchase. When I picked it up, it had the worst whine/chirp/scream of any bike I've ever heard. Friends commented on it all the time....they could hear it while riding in a group with me. So, I decided to pony up the bucks and replace it. MotorKote removed or quieted probably 50% or so of my noise. At that level it was still unbearable. My parts finally all arrived today, and I reassembled the bike this evening. Then went for a 20 minute ride. And.......THE CRICKETS ARE DEAD! I absolutely am stunned at the difference. No scream, no chirp....maybe just a hint of a whine if you listen for it. What a wonderful ride it was....I soon found myself just enjoying the beautiful evening and the cool air blowing on my uncovered arms...realized that I wasn't even thinking about a noise anymore! I would not have believed it. To be honest, I had doubts about whether this would help. Others have had theirs changed and it either didn't help, helped only slightly, or just moved the noise to a different RPM range. I am tickled to report that I no longer have a Chirper or Whiner. Just a normal sounding engine. Thank the good Lord above..... If anyone decides to go this route and change their basket themselves, please contact me. I have some "life lessons" to share with you.....as well as necessary tools if you need them. Those of you fighting Yamaha over this issue....PERSIST!!! There is no way that your noise is "normal" or a "characteristic" of this engine. I wish you could have heard mine when I first got it and could hear it now. WOW. Joe :big-grin-emoticon:
  19. My '87 model has 80k on her, and I want to go touring. My #3 cable broke where it goes through the adjuster elbow over the carbs. Should I replace all the cables while I have to wait for new parts anyway? It looks like #3 takes most of the abuse anyway. Also, is there any dealers who may have these cables on hand- most seem to have to order everything!
  20. I have found another Venture cheap $500. It is an 84 in excellent condition and runs well. The problem is the transmission. 1st and 3rd are fine, 2nd skips and it will not go into 4th or 5th. Sounds like it is shot to me. What is the availability of parts and how much ballpark figure to fix it? Even if I have to replace the transmission. Recommendations as to buy and fix or not. I am reasonably mechanically inclined and have worked on bikes in the past so I may be able to do the work myself.
  21. Looking for clamps/gaskets for the aftermarket Mufflers on my 84 XVZ12. Have only owned the bike a month so I don't really know which pipes are on it Hope my avatar picture shows enough for someone to help with info. I think Babbits has them but not sure. Help please if you can. I would like to replace these with OEM if possible. Any thoughts comments on distributors of those if any Thanks Marty
  22. I have a 1985 VR with the dreaded bad second gear. I want more power and a full functioning transmission. My idea is to replace my engine with one out of a Vmax. Has anyone made this swap?
  23. Hey I'm going to teat out my old collector from my 84 which cracked at the out pipe and replace it with the good one from my old 83...( glad I kept it). Do i need to replace all the gaskets... Those darn things are expensive.. Rick at buckeye quoted 148.00 for eight of them. Can the old ones be reused? Clay
  24. This is great dealing with my stealer. My rear shock started dumping oil this weekend annd after talking to my Stealer he said ( we can replace it but it takes most of the day and they have to remove everything rear of the gas tank to replace it ) Like I want them working on my Ride !!!!! I told them its a 30 min. job and nothing has to be removed but the saddle bag and the shock. I guess I need to show them how to replace one. I HATE DEALING WITH PEOPLE THAT DON"T KNOW HOW TO WORK ON THESE BIKES !!!
  25. Seems there might be some Afro Engineering (or is it Redneck) going on here. What are the funnels (for lack of a better/correct term) Seems like they are not seated correctly on the left side?? Would that make a difference in performance? Should I worry about it? Now that my head gaskets have been replaced it seems like I have less pep/get up and go! Could this be related to a carb issue (air filter doesn't look bad but will probably replace) Do i need to look at a carb sync? If so is there someone within say +/- 100 miles who could (and would) help? btw. fuel is still running around 40 See what else I can find! Thanks,
