1. I watched one of our mechanic's doing a plastic repair today and thought I would share it ! I have never seen it done before.....he clipped the end off a hose clamp.....heated it red hot with a torch and then embedded it into the plastic piece that was broken......see pic below. Not a repair you would do that can be seen but I'm sure someone may be able to make use of it somewhere. The picture is of a bench grinder shield arm. Keith
2. I know that to many of you a 450 mile trip is just like a quick trip around the block. But for me this will the most monumental motorcycle trip I have ever conceived of. My one day record for riding was the 2009 WI MD where it was a 90 mile trip from my house to the site, then we went for about an 80 mile ride, then the 90 miles back home. OK so I'll never make an Iron butt, but I am in the running for a marshmallow butt award. The projects that must be completed before I can undertake this epic (to me) journey are; (in no particular order) 1. Repair HI-LO headlight switch. Done, it had a lot of crud/corrosion on the contacts. 2. Install trailer hitch on bike. FINALLY done with this one 3. Wire bike for trailer. Done 4. Build a trailer. Done. 5. Find and repair coolant leak. Done 6. Find and repair leak in rear tire. Hmmmm..... The leak seems to have gone away by itself. 7. Find a way to mount and wire my GPS. Got the electrical Done and just have to fab up some kind of mount. 8. All of the normal Spring maintenance that must be done before the first ride. Done and took a 80 mi shake down ride. 9. Repair storm damage to tent from the last time I used it, 4 years ago. Done, tent is good to go. 10. Grease rear wheel pins and install new HH rear pads. Got the brake pads changed, will save greasing for MD Wish list items; 11. Build and install receiver hitch for bike. The Receiver hitch is finally done, painted, and mounted for the last time. 12. Finish making my first run of valve shim tools. Finally the first new tool is finished. Making up the rest will be easy if this one actually works. 13. Would like to get a new full face helmet for the trip. Thanks to Mr BIG TOM I will have a new Helmet for the trip. 14. Buy and install driving/fog lights. I got the KC HiLites installed but they will have to stay with the stock halogen bulbs till I get more time after MD. So much to do and so little time left. Working on the bike is the hard part, it is kept in a tiny 8x10 storage shed that it has to share with all of the yard tools. I can not even put it up on the center stand in the shed and still be able to close the door, and I do have to be able to close and lock the door every night or the shed will be empty by morning. OK, I'll stop whining now.
3. I have a plastic car topper to put on my HF trailer. I did not notice when I acquired it that it looks to have been crashed on one corner. There are some deep scrapes and the corner was pushed in and it rubbed thru at the crease mark. I cant complain, the price was right, which is why I did not look at it closely. I think the thing is vac formed out of ABS but I'm not certain about that. It is an off white in color and has a heavily textured surface. It is a Kartote brand. I was going to do the repair by laying up some glass cloth and epoxy on the inside, but after thinking about that, I realized that this cover is very flexible/flimsy and the glass/epoxy would not be, It will probably just crack off. Is there something flexible that I can use with the glass cloth to repair the crack. Eventually I will paint it, but that will not be for a while, at least not this year, unless I just buzz bomb it.
4. A little over three months after she went into the shop, I rode Roxie home tonight. If you haven't followed the saga, she broke a rod, which then broke out of the crankcase. Because this is so exceedingly rare, there was an initial delay on how to process it. Then there was slow work as parts were measured, ordered, and then more measurements and orders. Three months is a long time when you miss your entire Spring riding season. As of now, the repair is being covered under warranty. The dealer has had problems in the past with getting paid (warranty authorisation revoked after the fact), and hasn't been paid on this repair yet. Payment generally lags repair completion by several days, and it is longer than that already. Rather than hold Roxie hostage, she has been released into my custody. The dealer said they couldn't figure out why the battery gauge wasn't working. I reckoned I could figure that out, so I rode away. Happiness! Owen saw her idling last week. He reported that they were tracking down some popping on deceleration. I thought that explained the delay, but I suspect that it was all about the lagging payment. Because, she popped like a mis-timed Harley on the way home. I need to ask my wife if she saw flames coming out the tailpipe, because that's how it sounded. I also noticed that the passing lamps were out. *sigh* I parked in the driveway to clear out a berth in the garage. Then she didn't start. A call to Squidley tracked down the problem: they hadn't tightened down the positive battery cable! While under the seat, I fixed the battery gauge and passing lamp issue: they had removed the fuse! I wonder if they did that to prevent battery drain? I wonder if a loose battery cable can cause backfiring? She didn't backfire when I ran her after tightening the battery. Over the weekend I'll give her a good cleaning (she still has oil from the blow up covering her shiny bits) and check out what they did. Oh yeah, and I'll put some miles on her! Dave PS, I am attaching the list of the parts they bought and labor used.
5. 2003 Midnight Venture studded seat. Best glue used to repair small area of torn leather/pulled seams? Is it even possible? Damage located on seam just where it should get lots of abuse from mount/dismount. Any advice/experience? Thanks!
6. Well, here is a new twist on a old problem. I just got my 06 rsmtd from the yamaha dealer. Instead of replacing the clutch basket, they replaced the gear that meshes with the clutch. Compared with how it sounded before ,which was very loud. Now the chirping has not totally gone, but it is much, much better. This was a warrenty repair so it only cost me the transportation to haul it there (140 miles). Now I have the bike that I wanted, a great, great bike. Midnight Ryder :cool10::cool10:
7. The inside 2 rear trunk hold-down bolts recently broke right through the trunk base on my 06 Midnight Venture. Looking things over revealed that my trunk does NOT have the re-inforcing kit which Yammi has for this design flaw. Here's what I did to fix the problem. A trip to NAPA to pick up 2 large flat washers with 18mm holes in the center of the washers....a Plastic weld product by VersaChem called PLASTIC WELDER....rough grit emery cloth. Procedure: 1) Roughen up the ABS with the emery cloth where you intend to use the Plastic Weld. 2) Shoot Plastic Welder directly onto the area of use...mix quickly and spread over area of repair. 3) Imbed flat washer on top of Plastic Welder being careful to center the hole in washer directly over the screw mounting hole on trunk hold-down chrome frame. Allow this to set-up overnight for full strength of Plastic Weld to form. (Product sets-up in 15 minutes if needed for quick roadside repair) The next day.....Use remaining Plastic Weld to COVER the flat washers (Do NOT cover the washer holes!!) and trunk area in a 3"x 3" area. Allow this to set up for 24 hours. The next day.....Cut 2 pieces of leather from an old belt....Punch out a hole in the center of each piece of leather large enough to allow the trunk mounting bolt to go through easily. Install each piece of leather between the trunk underside and the top of the bolt-holdown nut. Install a 17mm bolt and snug down everything. For this I used 2 leftover bolts from my saddlebags...(I had these when I installed the improved trunk bolts with knobs last year) When all was done I then installed 2 NyLoc nuts on the trunk hold-down bolts and ran them up snug. This will prevent the hold-down bolts from vibrating loose again IMHO. Note: A Yammi Dealer is ordering me a NEW lower trunk as the bike is still under Warranty. I did this repair mainly for a temporary fix and to test this Plastic Welder product. So far so good on the repair!! The Plastic Welder is rated for 3500psi strength!! For anyone who has a Venture out-of-Warranty you might want to consider doing this to repair your trunk. Boomer.....who sez if ya sniff the fumes from this stuff it puts a pretty color to what yer looking at for about 5 minutes....but it don't give ya the munchies.
8. Okay, I have a 96 Fleetwood Terry RV travel trailer model 29S and I need a roof repair. Getting water in it, I have sealed every spot, still leaks. Probably looking at a entire roof replacement, anyone here know how to do that? Anyone here do it for a living or can do it as a side job and any idea what it would cost? Trailer is stored at Pirateland at Myrtle Beach. Trailer is about 31' long no slides. Ideal plan would be to come down and get the trailer to a site for a day or two and let the repairs take place. Thanks in advance, Don
9. Ok, yes its poor mainentance, but I've just got the old brake pads out from the rear wheel to find the left one is metal on metal, Ouch, right one is not much better. The caliper pistons are reluctant to go back and the repair kit here in the UK is crazy money. I have'nt tried really hard to get them back as I will need to clean them first. Anyone got any ideas?
10. Advice please, 2009 Royal star venture. The audio control shows no sign of life. checked connections. Will clean and reconnect after reading threads here. Is there any other secret repair. I have also checked the fuse and voltage to the brown/white wire. If it doesn't come to life what are the alternatives. How do you tell if it's the brain box or the controller and display on the handlebar? Is there repair for them? Where? cost? or replacement? where? cost? Thanks for your help.
11. Reference item two (in red) in the attached pic. Currently, on my 08 RSV, the "plunger" is kind of sticky...when I depress the brake lever, I can actually feel a kind of click as the actuator acuates. In fact, I've adjusted the lever as much as possible, but I've bottomed out on the screw/locknut combination, and still have a lot of play. It's almost as if the plunger isn;t retraction all of the way (out away from the master cylinder). A couple of questions: 1) Can these parts (item 2) be cleaned? 2) Is this repair considered a warranty repair? 3) If this isn;t a warranty item, is this easy to replace? Thanks for your inputs!
12. My main desktop at home seems to be "toes up" at this point. It started a while back giving me a BSOD message that it could not load c:\winnt\system32\config\software when 1st powered on or restarted. Power off and power right back up and it would boot normally and work fine, until the next reboot. Then it got to the point it would "blue screen" randomly, and then the power off and power back on did not work anymore. The can't load "software" message happened every time. I found a fix on Microsoft's site, where all the registry pieces in the "config" folder are replaced from the "repair" folder. Now it won't boot normally or in Safe Mode. I thought well I'll try a "repair". There lies the problem and therefore my question. When I select ®epair I get the message something to the effect "no windows system found" and it wants to install a fresh copy of Win-XP. The question is what does the install routine need to find to recognize there is an operating system in need of repair?
13. ...for my bike seem to be difficult to come by. It's a 1987 Venture Royale that came with the original owner's manual and a 1983 Service Manual. I know that there were both cosmetic and mechanical changes in 1986, so I would like to have a newer manual, if possible. Neither Haynes nor Clymer show a Venture repair manual on their sites. Does anyone know of a company that has some kind of service or repair manual for the '86 to '93 bikes?
14. Back on Aug 31st, someone ran into me from a glancing head on collision while I was sitting at a traffic light waiting on it to turn green. The other party was clearly at fault and they were cited for wreckless driving. I am letting my insurance company fix/total my bike and they will go after the other party's insurance to get their maney back. It tore up my 08 Venture pretty badly: entire front end,,,fairing busted, forks bent, handle bars, rear view mirror, wind screen busted, passing lights and blinkers busted. And everything down the right side of the bike....floorboards, fairing around the radiator, front and rear crash bar, saddle bag and the right side of the trunk suffered road rash. After talking to the Geico adjuster, he said the repair bill has to be around 90% of the value of the bike. I don't want the bike back and I want it totaled but 90% seems crazy. The repair shop hasn't finished the quote but I think 90% seems high. If they won't total it, how can I fight back?
15. Like this hasn't been dicussed before! Ha! Last December when I stored my bike I removed all the plactic and bought it into my basement shop with the intention of making all the repairs needed on the tabs and broken or missing pins. Oh yeah! And the headlight cover .... or replace it. So a good cleaning and a long look at everything showed me I had more work to do than I thought and I needed stuff to do it right. A really good epoxy and some ABS flatstock to replace or create new tabs and build up cracked areas on the fairings. Ok..... a couple of things. I tried 5 different epoxies over the winter. All dual chamber, 2 part dispensors for hard plastics or ABS listed on the package. I bought one "quick set, short cure time" and well, not worth it. All of the ones I chose were about 24 hours cure time. But from what I found, and tried a lot of different ways of testing the end repair, that they all seemed to have the same result with proper prep of the plastic to be repaired. As for repair materials.........you find things in the strangest places some times. I found all kinds of ABS flat stock at a grocery store. For FREE!! The store was doing a reset in the pop isle and all those plastic bin and shelf sliders are plastic......ABS plastic. Got to talking to the manager and they had ordered all new signage for the isles and displays and had stacks of sheets of plastic on the back waiting to be thrown out. Checked it out....three different thicknesses of ABS sheets. Some were 3 ft square. That should hold me through the testing process. But anyway I wanted to share some of my ideas and the way repairs were done. I know the head light covers suffer from cracked screw holes on a lot of the bikes and mine had really gone South so I'll start with that. The mounting holes in mine had given out and were missing pieces. So I tried this. Grind or sand out any rough edges and rough up the remaining surfaces with sandpaper. I wiped it all down with alcohol to remove any loose particals and oil. Next I packed the areas I wanted to keep open with modeling clay. Better than trying to reshape it later. I wrapped the front of the head light cover around the repair area with wax paper to shape the outer side of the repair. Attach it firmly with masking tape and create a cup for the epoxy. Fill the area with epoxy and let it cure. It's going to be thick so a couple of days would be plenty of time. Peel off the tape and wax paper. Most the paper will peel off and what sticks is easy to sand off. Remove the modeling clay and you will see the basic repair. I used a Dremel with a sanding drum to shape the epoxy rough and then used a sanding block to final shape it. Mask off the corners again and give it a light coat of primer. You will see any defects that need to be fixed. A light sanding and another thin coat of the epoxy to fill the defects and after curing it's ready for the final sand down, primer and the new paint. The paint is the tricky part. Still waiting for the color matching to work out and then the air brushing will be done. So far......installed it......and it took a good tightening with no cracking. So much for the head light. Next......the side panel pins.
16. ok maybe not glue but what do you use to repair cracks in the fairing and stuff? i have heard of plastic repair, pvc glue, plastic bond ect ect. i have a C shaped crack in my right side fairing where the lower the air tub goes in i think im right there? its the vent on the main part of the big side fairing that help? i dont want to have to remove the fairing and try to get to it from the inside. so can i just repair it from the out side? also is 40 mpg fair for the bike. i did find my poping its a exhaust leak down where on the right where it goes in to the collector main out side one not back one. the chrome shield is missing on that side and a little hole is in the pipe can this be welded?. i can live with it. right now. all in all with all the help i have gotten here. the bike is running well and comming along. and i did one thing i ran out of gas right in the yard but gauge showed one bar? hmmmm then parked it and nothing no bars? put it on reserve still no bar but fired up. so how much gas is in this sucker LOL i think ill just get a can and get some gas as nearest gas is 5 miles. thats what i get for playing and not paying attention.
17. Well since I cannot source out a 1300 engine ,I have ordered the cirrus sonic carb parts (paid) So I need the repair list for the 1200 second gear list that is out there can the gang help thanks Mike R..
18. Picked up an '84 Venture for Quickstep and Aussie Annie's trip to the US next year. I rode it the 135 miles home and the motor and gear worked perfect so we can do the necessary repair work to have it ready to go. Then the adventure began... We stopped at the Wally Mart in Richfield, Ut to do a few things. Because the speedo is broken, I went to mount a bracket to hold my GPS so I'd know the speed I was traveling. The bracket caught the edge of the penny that was glued on the clutch master cylinder and Jan asked me what was leaking? Oh Crap!! OK, into the store again, screwdrivers, super-glue, adjustable wrench and start the repair. Next thing I knew I'm holding part of the clutch lever...what the??? After a couple of attempts to fix that problem (BTW, you can't steal the brake lever from the other side) Jan suggests we try one of the crimpy pliers (translation: vise grips). What a great idea. By power shifting wherever possible, rode the bike the rest of the way home. I just kept up this traffic, didn't care how fast I was going. Now we go to work. If anyone has parts that can help make this a great bike again...we are in need of: Speedometer Right Mirror We have a little bit to work with but will need to do some plastic repair, paint and a fork rebuild. We look forward to getting to know Quickstep and Aussie Annie next year at the VR International Rally in Cody and as they travel around. Dave
19. Needed 1 used first gen carb slide. If any one has 1 old but usable carb slider for an 83 first gen Smaller bore than the 2nd gen. , can you PM me. skydoc_17 put me on to a problem i was having and sure enough he was dead on (as usual ). I had one slide come loose and was not opening all the way. superglue repair and carb sync and its a new beast. all the rest of mine are OK but the chipped up one , and I hate to run it (even though it runs great now) with it knowing its condition. let me know. thanks. Maindog
20. Regarding my other post related to fuse block, I have an 89 Venture that needs the attention of a professional. A lot of things have been hacked up, and I have decided to see if there is a mechanic that would be interested in repairing my bike. These are the things I need done that I can tell so far. New tires front and rear Brakes front and rear Replace all fluids on bike Repair fuse panel and get turn signals working Grease splines on drive shaft Inspect and repair any other items to make bike safe and reliable Some maybe wondering why not just dump it and get another bike. The thought has crossed my mind, and it may come to that. But the plastics are in real good shape and the bike looks amazing. Linda and I both fit comfortable on this bike, and it just pops for the cool factor, you dont see a lot of these on the road. I would prefer someone that is in a 250 mile radius of Greenville/Spartanburg, SC (upper northwest corner of SC). I have about $1800-$2000 total to spend on this, but that is not concrete either. I want the person or shop that does this to do it right, and charge a fair hourly rate. Let me know what you all think, and I appreciate all responses. You can contact me at my email sc750virago@charter.net Thanks, Don
21. Picked up a factory compressor and suspension controller to add to my VR Std. What's the capability of these units to fill a tire in a roadside repair? Rather than trying to hook the hoses to the existing fork and shocks permanently I'm thinking of just having a hose with a schrader valve to do triple duty. Manual shock air up and emergency roadside repair. I carry a small cigarette lighter compressor now but it's pretty lame and takes up space.
22. the pics are not so good, but i hope you get the general idea. ok, so i go to the shop to prep my scooter to make texas maint day coming saturday. I pull off the cover and find a chip coming off the tank and a big stain on the paint. I check for leaking brake fluid, it's clean and dry - so ruled that out. I checked my cover and nothing there. I rub my finger over it and it smears a bit and smells like gas what the heck????? I think to myself. then it dawns on me - i knew from the purchase that the bike was a salvage title. the seller, of course, makes it sound like a fall over, then totaled by INS company. the leak has to be coming from the inside. oh, good grief charlie brown. what next. I drain the tank into a gas can, then i start by pulling away the chip to find body filler. the body filler is, of course, soft and easy to cut off. I find the hole that was ground, repaired, ground and then filled, smoothed and painted. now i have this mess to contend with because who ever did the repair, did not do it for longevity sake. that is my opinion cause it is now my mess. I don't do body work much less gas tank repair. I assume a repair is gonna b much cheaper than a replacement tank. Does anyone here do gas tank repair. Maybe I can get lucky and someone within driving distance ( 8 hours or so) does and wants to take my job after giving me a quote - so what do ya'll think
23. Is it redundant to carry an emergency plug repair kit after putting "Ride On" in your tires???...because wouldn't any hole that Ride On isn't able to stop be too big for a plug to repair? Or would the Ride On in the tires prevent a plug from sealing the hole? Just wondering.
24. Peaks and Valleys ….. We got new windows installed (living room bay ---beauty, kitchen and dining room and one in the laundry room) and front and back doors. Happy has hell with the results, finished Tuesday at 4pm. Look great!! PEAK!! The guy doing the front door shows me a small sinkhole in the front porch… I’m like WTF, upon discovery it is the water main leaking upon entry to the Chateau. Have to rip up the porch and lawn to replace 40 yr old line. Seems like every second house has this problem lately. Get about a $G quote from local guy, IF I do the repair to the porch, He’ll pack the gravel and screening and thinks he can come under the retaining wall. So he digs, replaces line and repacks for a grand!! VALLEY!!! I figure screw this…. Insurance! I can hear the water running under there plain as day, what is it doing? … in case there is more damage. First we start out with “sorry sir not covered BS” but I talk to supervisor and quote section & paragraph of policy (35a)…. They send out contractor. They WILL cover excavating and refill, porch repair but NOT pipe replacement. Of course minus my $400 deductible. Contractor guy was from Paris, had a little chat about motorcycles and Paris cafes (we’re buds) then he tells me he is going to send them in a quote of about …. Hold on …. $4000 - $5000. So if I can get the local guy to make up a estimate of what he would charge for doing the porch repair too, send that in and hopefully I at least get my $$ back from these criminals …. Not covered ????…. Hello, sinkhole here!! Cant quite call it a PEAK …. But we are looking uphill!! Did you feel this earthquake? I was siting on the front porch and didn’t feel a thing!! Thank god I called the Ins company in the morning …. Ya just know those parasites woulda claimed “earthquake damage not covered”. Yesterday had the big digger here ripping up the palatial lawns, got the new line in and repacked the lawn and porch was filled with screening and then power tamped. They left by 2:30, spent until supper but managed to get the part of the porch they had dug up and the walkway repaired. So back to PEAK!!! Gonna get the estimate from the guy same time I get the bill on Monday, he knows the situation with the insurance co., so here’s hoping he makes it a juicy one!! Here’s a few pics of the window work and then the trench destruction. Chief Grey Cloud and Princess Pity Me …
25. I have a 83 Venture and it started to shift hard and now I have a hard time getting it to shift out of 2nd gear sometimes it does and some times it don't, could this be a oil problem I just change the oil. The clutch seems to be working, it disengages and seems fine. Where do I go from here I read something about taking out the shifter rod and cleaning it. I can do all the repairs on it but I want to go to the right area for the repair. Oh and I am going on a trip next weekend maybe....lol If you could email me directly it would speed this up. Thanks Bubbadoo700@aol.com
