  1. So I (re)installed by stebel horn today with a relay relay post 85 to pink wire relay post 86 to brown wire relay post 30 to fuse block, which is connected to positive battery terminal relay post 87 to positive horn terminal negative horn terminal to negative battery terminal I also installed the Kury battery charge indicator. Pretty straight forward install. Use a pen light to locate switched on power wire. Light lights up when the key is turned to on position. Does not light up when key is turned to off position. The wire I used is green w/ a white stripe. It is part of a 3 wire block that is not used which is located on the clutch side of the bike. What I did was crimp a terminal (don't know the actual term) that can be used to push inside the wire block like how the stock blocks are used. Just looks like a thin flat piece of metal. Negative wire to ground. I had my battery tender hooked up and it is giving me a green light. Turned the bike on and the battery charge indicator is giving me 2 flashing red lights. I unhooked it and used my schumacher battery charger. It is also giving me a green light. Turned the bike on again and this time I get 2 red lights plus 1 yellow light which are flashing. So I am not sure why the battery indicator is telling me hardly any charge and the battery tender and charger are both telling me full charge. Any ideas why I am getting completely opposite results?
  2. I am putting passing lamps on my RSTD. I put a relay under my seat following a post of Venture instructions. The instructions say that I should hook my relay switch wire to the blue with yellow stripe. In my headlight bucket on the large connector block there is a blue 14ga wire with yellow stripes going perpendicular to the wire. On the small connector block there is a blue 18ga wire with the yellow stripe running the length of the wire. Do you know which wire that I should use on a 2008 RSTD? Thanks
  3. HAS ANYONE HAD ANY LUCK WITH ADDING A RELAY AND NEW WIRING TO ORIGINAL VENTURE HORNS AND DID IT HELP ANY. ALSO DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO ADD RELAY AND HEAVY WIRE TO STOCK HORNS:bang head:
  4. 89 Venture Royale... I've lost my brake lights. I tracked the problem to a relay behind the headlight. This relay is marked: 1NL OMRON 10Y8D5 It is a metal cased relay with 4 spade connectors in the connector housing. Can anyone help me identify which part to order? There are two relays with this marking, one on the left and one on the right. I have been unable to determine what part this is. The parts fische only shows two different devices in that area of the fairing (Electrical 1, items 9 and 12). One is noted as "Relay Assembly for side stand", the other just as "Relay ASSY". I did verify that this is the problem part by swapping the relays and the brake lights worked. Swapped back and no brake lights. Since the relay wasn't working I took it apart carefully and found a small deposit between the contacts. I cleaned that out and tested the relay in the bike again. The brake lights worked! I epoxied the relay back into it's cover, tested and the lights still worked, so I reassembled the bike. One last test... no brake lights. Of course, our local dealership has no parts in stock and they can't figure out which relay to order from the parts fische.
  5. Is there a "wiring diagram" for the installation of driving lights with a relay somewhere on this site? I have searched and searched but have not located one. I have located a Thread listing several "Tips" but no illustration. Can someone either point me in the right direction or provide a simple drawing showing all the components; driving lights, on/off switch, relay, battery, fuze, grounds (think I've got the all) and how these components would be connected? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Horn Relay

Looking for thr horn relay on my '02 venture. Any suggestions?
  7. I see where some venture rider are using a 30 amp relay when putting on passing lights. My question is where are they mounting this relay, And do they wire it to the low beam or always on? If adding another switch where did they mount it?
  8. I want to wire up my turn signals like the first bikes, w/o the extra electronic components on later bikes. Just the handlebar switch, flasher relay unit and bulbs. I tried that but every relay unit canister I plug in just buzzes and will not flash the bulbs. When the switch is moved left or right, the proper bulb shines but no blink. If any techno brains know why, I'd appreciate an answer. I realize that they blink when a certain amount of resistance is produced from the energy used to light the bulbs. But, is there a blinker unit that operates with a timer or by any other method other than resistance?
  9. yeah, I know been beaten to death. I searched several posts and still can't find the answer. If I were to mount it on the brake side of the bike, I can use an L bracket and tie into a pink and brown wire on 2 relay posts If I were to mount it in the fairing (which is how so far I have chosen to do), one relay post still goes to the pink wire, but not sure about the other wire. If there is a brown wire in the fairing, please let me know where. Any other options? A. Pink horn wire goes to RELAY POST 85. B. Brown horn wire goes to Relay Post 86. C. Connect one end of a wire to Relay Post 30 and the other end to the Hot side,+, of the compressor D. Connect end of your 20 amp Fused line to Relay Post 87 and the other end to the Hot Post,+, of your Battery. E. Connect the negative,-, on compressor to ground or neg,-, post on battery Also I have been reading about the feedback issue. Has anyone that has mounted it in the fairing still had the feedback issue? I am considering getting a seperate button and just wiring it seperately from the stock button if that will eliminate any feedback issue. From what I have understood the closer to the battery you install the fuse, the better off you are. Anyone else have this same understanding? Thanks.
  10. When I pulled my ignition switch out I had some heat related issues on the red wire. It would seem to me that that problem stems from the addition of the driving lights as they are the only non-standard item that would add draw. I am not sure how to do it but it would appear that the best way to eliminate the load on the switch would be to put in a relay on the driving light circuit. I am sure others have done this. Would anyone care to share how difficult they found this to do and what challenges I need to be prepared for? I sure would appreciate it.
  11. In my effort to get the CLASS system functional, I took the compressor apart to make sure the motor wasn't seized. I took the top off of the cylinder and the piston moves freely. The problem? There are small metal discs in the top...anyone have a picture of how they go back in? There seems to be more than one way, and Iwant to make sure when I get the new relay that this is functional. Thanks.
  12. R LOUD Mounted 2 of them. 1 Chrome on the outside and had one under the bike mounted to where the AIS was. Now its loud enough to scare me and I'm expecting it cause I am the one that pushadabutton. Using 1 30 amp relay and a 20 amp fuse. 12 gauge wire feeding the relay and 2 14 gauges coming off the relay feeding the horns.
  13. OK, I've gone through the whole system. I was getting an E1 & E4 error. I've soldered the connections in the control unit, traced every wire for continuity, relay test was done, was able to get the pump to spin independently, but still, the system won;t work! It reads the psi, but when I press to increase or decrease, I hear the relay and the solenoid click but nothing happens. I've gone through every step in the service manual. What next? Does this mean that the control unit is faulty? At some point during this exercise, I was able to decrease the pressure using the CLASS unit, but had to manually inflate.... What's next?
  14. Would someone tell me exactly where the brake light relay switch on a '99 venture is please? Thanks
  15. The horn on the right side of my 2000 RSV is not working. I checked the voltage and it shows to be around 9.6 volts, when the horn button is pressed and 0 when not. Should it be 12 or greater? Is there a relay that could be going bad?
  16. Today When I Went To Start My Scoot, Turn Key On And Heard A Buzzing Sound Coming Down Around The Battery. After Searching For The Sound Found It To Be From The Starter Circuit Cut-off Relay. Locate Under The Right Hand Side Panel (little Blue Relay With Four Wires Into It). Went To My Dealer And He Pulled One Off Of A 08 Model (same Number On Part). When I Replaced The Relay The Buzzing Was Still There. This Relay Is Wired To The Kickstand Switch , Clutch Switch And Neutral Switch. Does Anyone Have A Idea On Where To Look Now. Cannot Find The Other Connectors To Disconnect The Three Switches One At A Time To See If I Can Isolate The Problem Causing The Buzzing Sound. Thanx For Your Info Horse
  17. :think:Installing the Stebel horn, removed my old Rivco's. Questons is that will the relay that comes with the rivcos work with the Stebel? I tested it and it semed alright? Do I need to replace it with the Stebel relay for loudness or is it the same with the Rivco relay? Also, it seems even with the mount from Carbon One that that the wires are really close to the exhaust? Is this a problem? confused................................
  18. In the morning (or when it's cold out), the turn signals and the indicator light come on and stay on. While they are lit up, I can hear a buzz from something inside the fairing. Once the ambient temp warms up, the signals work fine. I looked through the service manual but it doesn't talk about this situation. I'm thinking that it's probably the flasher relay or the self cancelling unit. Please let me know what you think it would be and how difficult it is the correct and where it's located. Thanks all!! Dave
  19. I hooked up my passing lamps today. Found the wiring diagram here on this site, followed it, now here is what I have. With the lamps turned on, right turn signal works fine. Turn on the left turn signal, both turn signals and headlight flash and the radio goes dead. I have gone over the wiring to make sure everything is hooked up according to the instructions that I have, but still the same thing happens. I have my power from the battery through a fused wire to a relay, from the relay I ran another wire to a seperate switch, from the relay another wire powered by ignition. Any ideas guys, sure could use some. Thanks.
  20. What is the reason that I can't use a 55w (H3) in my driving lights? I did wire the driving lights using a relay and fuse. It is on an 05 RSTD, nothing but lights. BTW, I've read all of the threads regarding this, seems like they mostly concern a venture. Steve
  21. Hello, Over the last few months I added a pair of 55W driving lights and later heated grips which draw about 3 amps. I started having some battery-drain problems after the grips. Some testing last weekend confirmed that it seems the stock charging system is OK but pretty well maxed out with the lights, and the grips push it over the edge. It's OK under some conditions, but sometimes the voltage just won't go over 12.7 or so with all of it turned on. As I mentioned last week, I want to install LED's in the two front clearance lights and one of the brake light sockets to get back 1.7 amps. Also, I was dissatisfied with the fact that the headlight was getting 2 volts less than the system; with the bike charging at 14V the light only got 12V. This has a direct effect on brightness. As I had done on my Virago, a while back I installed relays for low and high beam to send battery power right to the light and bypass all the factory wiring, switches and connectors. I was rudely awakened to the fact that the Venture's lighting system was smarter than me and didn't like that. Last weekend I settled for gaining back some of that voltage. I installed one relay in the L/B wire to the RLU (check manual for explanation). Bike side of L/B activates my relay, and RLU side of that wire gets power from the relay. Relay draws power from battery - almost - explanation below. This bypasses the ignition and start switches, and gained about .8V. Finally, I had been powering relays off the batt pos post. However, looking at the diagrams, the factory setup puts the main 40A fuse right off the battery, then everything else after that. The highest voltage when running won't be at the battery but rather at the charging system with the main fuse being a potential source of voltage drop (minor point). At any rate, I decided it was more sound electrically to power any relays just downstream of the main fuse. My 2 cents :-) Jeremy
  22. Mine is an 87 VR but it seems both models are rated for about the same alternator output so I put this in General Tech. I read all the varying opinions about how much extra the system can handle and finally just bought some cheap $20 driving lights with 55W H3 bulbs and installed them. Made some cool little brackets to mount them on the forks by the brakes like you see on some BMW's. I powered them with a relay off the battery. The trigger side of the relay comes off the headlight circuit, before the dimmer switch, and goes thru a toggle switch. Consequently, I can turn the lights on or off with either headlight beam, and they go off with the headlight when starting the engine. After riding this way for a couple weeks, I have a few conclusions. 1) I leave them on in the daytime for visibility to others. 2) I can't leave them on in traffic at night because they have absolutely no beam control and are blinding to others. 3) The relay system works perfectly. 4) Extra light is nice. 5) Cheap lights have kind of a crude beam pattern. Nicer ones would probably be better. 6) The charging system seems fully up to the task of the additional 110W. I've had no battery problems and the volt meter always reads close to 14 volts as long as the engine is above ~2000 rpm. I have no other extra loads on the system. I will soon install grip heaters, which are only a couple amps (24W). Just to keep load down, I think I'll install LED's on the tail and running lights which will save 7W x 4 = 28W. Does anybody have any clue what the ignition system draws? Jeremy

    carburetor heater

I have a question that is puzzeling me and maybe one of the great mechanics can answer it for me. What is the purpose of the carburetor heater? Do these things go bad? If one were to go bad,or if the relay were to go bad, how would you know it?
  24. Is there anyone out there that knows what number is printed on the fuel pump relay on an 83 standard? I'm not sure I have the right one.... Thanks in advance, Tim
  25. Well I have a problem with my turn signals they work on emergency flash and they burn fine when the bike is running but when I try to use the turn signal all I get is a buzzing noise from the flasher/hazard relay. Bought a used one from Pinwall cycle parts same thing buzzing noise. I attempted to clean the contacts in the switch. Is there a voltage I should look for at the main connector to the flasher/hazard relay? Thanks Jim
