  1. I know this subject has been beaten to death, I am no electrical wizard and I've read the fix for the ignition switch, what I'm not sure of, the 2 red 10g wires going to the toggle switch, is one connected to the Brown/Blue and one to the red, or is the Br/Bl and red joined together and then the two 10g wires attached to that. My ignition would come on when the key is between the Acc and On, but when it went to the On position the dash cut out but radio still worked. I was trying to loosen those screws that hold the switch with a hammer and punch...I was a millright we were good with a hammer...and now the switch is working again, I've tried wiggling the key and off and on and its still working. So was it a contact problem and would putting in this "Emergency switch" solve the problem should it occur again. So my dilemma is do, I leave it or wire in this toggle switch. Advice Please. Ian
  2. I know I'll probably fill like a dummy asking, but I've seen these on RSV's before and bought one for my bike quite a while ago, just never put it on, but lost the instructions. Now I'm thinking of putting it in my car instead, it's about 5 inch's long x 1 inch high x 3/4 inch deep and has a combination clock, voltage meter, and outside temp. reading. With the sensor that you put outside to p/u the outside temp. it has 3 other wires (black, red, and orange). I figure black and red goes to grnd. and batt., but where does the orange wire go (ignition?) I hooked up the red and black to the batt., and the clock, volt meter and outside temp came on, but I guess I still need to know about the orange, anybody out there done this??
  3. I have a 1988 VR with 64k miles on it. I have looked through as many threads as I can find on this problem and can't find a solution to my issue. I was out riding yesterday and my oil level warning light came on and the red LED started flashing. I pulled over on the shoulder as quickly as possible and had a buddy hold the bike upright so I could check the oil level for fear I had created another oil leak (previous leak fixed) and lost my oil. The oil was at very near the 3/4 full level so I wasn't low on oil. We sat there for a few minutes letting things cool down and my nerves to settle down not wanting anything serious to happen to my ride. After about 5 minutes I cranked it back up and the light stayed on so I let it run and rocked it from side to side and still the light stayed on. We started riding again but instead of it being pleasurable for me anymore I was concerned with a problem in the engine now. So I decided to turn around and head back home. About 5 miles from the house the light went out. It stayed off until I pulled into my drive way and the DA** thing came back on again. Now I have read the others have had this problem but it was when the were cranking on the throttle while going through the gears. I could understand this if that was the case with me but I was just riding along minding my own business. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it? Red lights give me the willies and FLASHING red lights is hard on the old ticker. All help will be greatly appreciated as always.
  4. Sons bike hit my rear 2nd gen RSTD and broke the red reflector. Anybody have one for sale? Hate to even think what yamaha would charge. Thanks. God Bless and be safe. mike
  5. I have a friend who lost his leg in a mc accident. After one year plus his uncle gave him his 82 Gold Wing. He tried riding it some, but the fear overcame him. He asked me if I wanted it (I used to own one) and I am trying to come up with a fair price. It is very clean and the red paint is good. I will have to find out the mileage but it appears mechanically sound. I want to be fair with him, but I don't want to overpay either. Let me know if you have any thoughts!
  6. Stop at a Star Dealer the other day I have to say the Red and Black maybe the best colors of any
  7. Ignition Switch Failure A big thanks to Eck Nace for the excellent write-up Clicking on the pictures will show a larger version. For those of you who have not had ignition switch failure I recommend that you check this connector as soon as possible. This is the connector for the Red Hot wire and the Brown & Blue wire that comes from the ignition switch located under the fuel tank. Luckily, I just happen to “turn” the connector upside down while installing the ignition switch by pass mod in the case of ignition switch failure. View of ignition switch connector under fuel tank. This is the connector for the RED wire and the Brown/Blue wire View looking down at ignition switch wire connectors under fuel tank. Note: The two wires that you see with RED TAPE are the two wires used to by pass the ignition switch. One of them is the RED hot wire and the other is the Brown/Blue wire. Mental note: When splicing into the Red wire and Brown/ Blue wires, it is highly recommended that you make your split connection on the “aft” end of both connectors. This way if you ever DO have to remove the ignition switch, you can still unplug the two connectors with out having to cut the two by-pass wires again. Also, as shown in this picture, if the connection on the brown/blue wire did happen to burn up and where I lost connection, I would STILL be able to use the ignition by-pass switch I installed to start and run the bike. After I cut the burnt connector out, I installed this connector in its place. Please note: Only (2) wires go thru this new rubber sealed connector. The RED hot wire and the Brown / Blue wire which both go to the ignition switch. The black wire may LOOK like it goes through this new connector but it does not. Photo of removed burnt connector This photo is to show the location of the ignition by-pass switch installed in the case of ignition switch failure. I wanted the by-pass switch located in a convenient location, where I do not have to get off the bike if the stock ignition switch fails.
  8. Is there any way to relocate the red ign. switch located on the right handle bar?? I have bumped that thing a couple of times and shut the motor off at the most inoppurtune times, such as taking off from a red light, and once going down the highway at 70 mph. Now that will get your attention when you automatically reach up and turn it on again. The resulting "BANG" will almost give you hear failure!! Has anyone ever relocated this switch?? Don H.
  9. Several of the body parts off the 84 VR parts bikes that were spoken for are now available again. If any of you are still needing body parts they are being offered at a pre Christmas discount since I'm trying to raise a little extra Christmas cash. All of the parts will need to be repainted since the previouse owner painted black rattle can spray paint over the original red/ dark red factory finish, but, are otherwise in good shape. Front fender left top front fairing fake gas tank cover with gas cap door left and right side covers 84 style no louvers left and right saddle bags pre 86 style removeable front fairing brackets are available and are extremely straight:thumbsup2: So step right up and

  11. Just got home from picking up the 84 in South Carolina.Even in the dark I could still see the red bike on the trailer.
  12. Hey guy's I've been riding in the Seattle rain quite a bit lately and am finding out that my brakes barely want to slow me down:shock3:. I even resorted to draging my feet once. Seems my pads don't want to grab unless I continuly pump the brakes while driving antisapating a red light or sudden stop. The brakes work fine in the dry just have issues when raining. Any HELP? Thanks Chris (Rainier Rider) 86royale
  13. was on I55(mo)Saturday and seen a red RSV heading north just waveing up storm anybody on here?
  14. This subject came up in another thread and I didn't want to hi-jack it. But for those of us that own '83's and ride at night anytime, for me anyway, the lights are really bright and almost blinding. I guess that's why the '84's came out with a dimmer knob... I wonder if giving them the red treatment might help tone things down a bit?? Anyone ever changed theirs out. Red is the only color that doesn't ruin your night vision. And red might just make the dash look kinda 'cool'..... The only drawback I can see would be that anything colored red on the dials will disappear at night. Gonna have to go out and check the guages.
  15. Sunday Ron and I rode to Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge, which is located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. We have been there before, and just spontaneously decided to go there again. But I forgot how steep the trails are. Really beautiful. Here are some photos. I am still sore, but it was still fun. Yama Mama:7_2_104[1]:
  16. I followed an old harley home from work last evening. When the guy applied his brakes his brake light came on. He also had high intensity led's that light up inside his red turn signal lenses. Then on his rear bags he had two very bright small red led's that flashed on/off about every half second. This was a real eye catcher no problem seeing his brake lights from a distance. Not sure if his setup was legal but definitely noticeable.
  17. went looking for some new boots but the only thing i found that looked good all said H-D on them found some good looking red wings any body got s good pair of red wings and a number for that style?
  18. Fall colors are here. I was in the mountains today. Parsons,Davis, Canaan Valley, and Mt Storm WV. Grant County is changing fast. There is a massive Electric Wind Generator project building near the Mt Storm power plant. I have fond memories of the Red Baron riding through there with the Blue Beast. Those were the good ole days. Hey I need a ride soon. Today I was in a Ford.
  19. Saw a red RSV being towed on a trailer (gasp!) behind a Chevy Tahoe or Surburban about 1030 AM yesterday heading south on I-95 in Jacksonville. Anyone from here and will he have the chutzpa to admit it???
  20. I was in Winfield Kansas for an acoustic music festival last week. I work at the festival every year doing transportation. I end up driving between Arkansas City and Winfield a lot. I think that it was Saturday (but I'm not sure) when I saw a red 1st gen going south, either on Main St in Winfield or on 77 heading towards Ark City. Any body know who that might have been?
  21. My red bike has an issue with the f/b fluid level sensor float switch. I seem to have to fill the reservoir too full of fluid to satisfy it. If I put in what it seems to want, it over flows when I put on the lid. If I put in fluid just to the level indicated on the sight glass, it doesn't satisfy the level switch and I get the red flashing CMS etc. Is this common? Thanks, Brian H
  22. Well, I guess I've got it bad. I've bought a second '84 Venture. I now own 2, the blue one and a red one. I pick up the new red bike next Saturday. It has some issues but seems mostly in good order. Body work, rear brakes, the usual kind of old Venture stuff, but only 21,000 Kilometers! Lots of tinkering postential. A bike to ride and a bike to tinker with, what could be better? Old blue ran well all the way over and back, about 110 km's total. I was afraid she'd sulk but nope, she seemed good with it. The sun came out on the way home which hopefully is a good omen too. I'll keep you posted. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  23. Ok, can you guess why I have a short red line welt across my face the other day? geesus.. pulled the cover off the bike and wondered what that bright glint of metal was swishing up towards me as the cover let go of the overly bent antenna.. WHAP right up into the face.. When my eyes stopped watering and I picked myself off the ground, I looked around to make sure no one saw me.. Red faced and feeling foolish.. I forgot I had antennas and stowed for the covering of the bike. fun.. embarrassing but funny.. had to share.. (my purpose in life is to make people laugh, hopefully not with too much pain)
  24. I asked the previous owner. He isn't sure whether the battery has been replaced or not. If not, it is 9 yrs old and I have been having battery issues. The 3 nights I put it on the battery tender. When I went to check on it the next morning, it was still red. Just before I left to go to work it turned green. That is 12+ hrs it needed to charge the battery. W/ my previous bike, it was a couple hours and it was charged on a 5 yr old battery. 2 nights ago, I put it on the charger and it was green by the morning. Last night, I put it on the charger and still red this morning. So assumming it is the original battery, I rode in this morning and was pretty much dying just before I pulled into the parking spot. Dealer said battery prices just went up. Quoted me $145. Online OEM says around $101. Does anyone know of any alternates? Can you pick up the same battery at places like Autozone? Thanks. Jerry
