  1. I went out to check the battery charge rate, and when I hit it with the multi it read 17.7-18vdc. I've heard a lot about stators and rectifyers not charging, but this is 'whoa ho' time.... Obviously the stator is stating like it should, but the rectifyer is rectum.... I'm about ready to take the bike to Cody. Do you think I can get by without frying the battery?? It's a DEKA. I do have one of the OEM Indian rectifyers around here somewhere. Maybe replace the OEM in Cody?? Opinions?? Never mind... False alarm. I went ahead and read the service manual and it states that the voltage should be 16-17, and since I checked it with a $1.99 Harbor freight multi-meter it doing what it's supposed to be doing. Another interesting thing is I guess you can adjust the voltage on these things. How?? I donno, but I guess it can be done.

    where is my post?

I said I had some extra parts and such for sale and posted it on the watering hole forum as I have seen others do. I went back later to read it and found it had been moved. Where was it moved and why? I can't find it. Reno
  3. I paid a horrible amount of money for this edition of Cycle Magazine, and I am happy to share the interesting bits. I have uploaded the full size images of all the following pics, and they are clear and legible. Any problems and I have the original pages. Lots of it is interesting, but the gas consumption over the trip was 40.6 mpg. That is with a single rider, carrying 20lbs of gear. The gas in 1988 had no ethanol and we should, I think, expect around 1.5mpg poorer with E10. There may be other factors .... add comments So high 30s seems to be about right for one-up, fairly spirited riding. Anyone struggling to read these .... The original images are much bigger, and easy to read. Try downloading these from Photobucket, and if it's still a problem I can send copies of the originals. Enjoy. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0646.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0647.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0650.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0653.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0656.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0659.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0665.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0668.jpg
  4. I found this article and it's a pretty good read. Looks like our old Venture faired pretty well. http://www.ridermagazine.com/output.cfm?id=2226349
  5. ok. new user here. i recently bought an 83xvz12. the taillights were working, but now they dont. however, the brake lights do! ive checked and replaced the bulbs, and the fuse. still nothing. i checked with a multimeter to the sockets and i do get readings. im confused. i read in here, there are a bunch of relays, but mine are no longer in the holder, and are just lying around in there. all of them are marked differently. help!
  6. i guess i'm doing something wrong or not understanding something.i just checked the air in the forks i think(pictures below)and the right one read 40 psi and the left one read 16psi, i thought it was only 7 psi max.what the h_l_ am i thinking or doing. HELP!!!! P.S. i ride a 06 second gen.
  7. after 3000 miles on my 01 rsv instead of getting use to it the chirping is driving me nuts. it's taking the fun out of riding. there is no way I could take a long trip with that noise. I've read about changing to the I basket just wondering what the success rate was before i spend the money. if the chirping doesn't go the bike will. thanks
  8. I read some articles on the Ventures having this issue. Is this something thats common? I may have second thoughts on purchasing the 07 Im looking at.
  9. I need to replace the front right fairing panel on my '86 VR. I might be able to repair the one I have, but it is quite badly broken. Does anyone know if all the First Gens used the same front fairing? I read somewhere that they did. If that is the case I will only have a color problem. So ... Will the front fairing panels from the early first gens fit the '86 on models? Thanks.
  10. The guy that wrote the RSTD manual, or translated it from the Japanese, or whoever put those shift points in the book. Ok. I admit it. I'm a fairly anal guy. I do read the manual, follow the reccomendations, etc, etc. I used to ride a V-Star 950 cruiser, nimble and quick, but when I rode with the local yamaha association last year the Ventures and RSTDs would make me work to keep up. This year I traded up, carefully rode the beast home, read the owners manual carefully, and started riding, using the reccomended shift points. Felt like I was driving a truck. Weak acceleration, sounds like it's working hard just to get going. WTF? The guys must have modified the engine the get the acceleration I was seeing last year? Then I found this forum. Read all the threads about shift points I could find. I'm still in break-in. 600 km and climbing rapidly. I haven't cranked it as hard as some suggest, for that reason, but, oh my, can this thing fly. Still not as nimble as my last bike, but pull? Loving it! Loving it! Loving it!
  11. Interesting read on suspension and how it works - http://www.cyrilhuzeblog.com/2011/04/14/the-inner-workings-of-motorcycle-suspension-part-1/
  12. Hi everyone I have an '06 rstd with the very loud chirp which having tried different oils including amsoil with no success, have approached my dealer about getting an 'I' basket and althought the the 'I' basket number is good that they would have to get it from overseas and would cost around $450-$500. with no guarantee that it would be the 'I' basket, and as been said by some that it didn't fix the chirp. My request is does anyone have an 'I' basket available or can get hold of one and if so how much not including freight that would make it bit more financially better to risk. I read on a post from some time back I think from Kit with 'crickett' that he had the 'I' basket fitted but then fitted another which cured the chirp, was the 2nd basket fitted another 'I' basket? Would be thankfull for any help. Alan (from Adelaide Sth Australia)
  13. I have an 84 VR, and am wondering how many had the same mirror base. If enough people were interested, I am looking to have the base moulded, so I can mount any mirror. If you read this and are interested, can you spread the word (this could be cost effective)

    must see video....

tarnation...and I had a great reply composed to Jay's thread...that I'm sure would have been allowed. Dear Moderator, you could have at least waited until you read my post before the thread disappeared. ...but you made a good call, regardless.
  15. Need a hand...Front speakers are shot...reading all the old comments I can find it seems the ideal replacement speakers are POLK 107DB400's...Now out of production and replaced with DB401's...Looking at the 401 speaker there are only 2 "Ears" for mounting..will this hold up? Also read a comment on MTX speakers...any help on the model/part number of these speakers? I'm sort of hard of hearing to begin with and have to turn up the volume on the Interstates...Any help? Appreciate..
  16. Folks, this has been weighing heavily for a few days now so I'm going to put it out here and hope that you all give it some thought. It has been a long winter for many of us and I think that we all need a long soul cleansing ride to wash those winter doldrums away. It is perfectly understandable and happens to some extent every winter. I'm talking about the tone of some of our responses to one another. There just seem to be way too many posts and responses lately that end up with one or more members going after each other much more aggressively than is necessary. Sometimes it is the result of a short, snippy and totally unnecessary response to a question or opinion and at other times it seems to be a problem with somebody being entirely too thin skinned and taking offense at something that was perhaps meant more in fun and not as a smart remark. One thing that has always set this forum apart from so many others on the Internet is our patience and willingness to help each other. Even if it's a question that may have been discussed multiple times before, we have recognized the fact that some folks are newer and may not have seen the previous discussion. We also recognize that some folks here are much better with computers than others may be and we realize that searching for and finding existing information is difficult for some of those people. That is why we often discuss things over and over again or at least help them by posting a link to an existing discussion without a smart remark to accompany the response. We have also been able to disagree about things without it turning into personal attacks against another members opinion. If don't don't like a certain product, whether it is a tool to sync carbs, a tire brand, whatever, it should be easy enough to state an opinion and explain why you feel the way you do without telling somebody else that they are stupid or don't know what they are talking about just because they happen to have had a different experience with that product than you have. The strength of VentureRider.org is that we have a fantastic group of folks that generally bend over backwards to help each other. I've said many times, our bond here is the love of the Venture, Royal Star and other motorcycles. We are here to enjoy that which brings us together, not to dwell on things that might tear us apart. None of us are perfect and we all have a bad day now and then. I have actually censored myself here by going back and deleting my own posts a few times because when I read it back later, I realized that it did not come across as I had intended or I had said something that I quickly realized was uncalled for. The best advise I have to offer to all of you and to myself is to NOT post if you are upset or angry about something. Walk away and think about it for a while. After you type a post when you are a bit miffed about something, take a few minutes and read through it again a couple of times before you hit that submit button. You are the greatest group of people that I have ever had the pleasure of being associated with. I am very proud of the family that we have built here and if we stay true to the the basic principals that this club was founded on, we will continue building those lifelong friendships that so many of us have found here. Thanks for listening.
  17. Read the following explanation before looking at the picture! Most Syrians struggle to even read Arabic, much less have a clue about reading English. So, how do a group of Syrian protest leaders create the most impact with their signs by having the standard 'Death To Americans' (etc..) slogans printed in English? Answer: They simply hire an English-speaking civilian to translate and write their statements into English. However, in this case, they were unaware that the 'civilian' insurance company employee hired for the job was a retired USNavy Chief! Obviously, the results were PRICELESS! This picture is not doctored.
  18. Freebird, Is it possible for someone to read a private meassage and it still show up on my end as "unread" in the read date field, under unconfirmed private messages? This has happened to me on at least 3 occassions and I know the person read them. Also, is a "confirmed" private message the same as a "reply" in as far as a person sent a response back to your origional private message?
  19. OK When I logged in on my computer to the venturerider site using Firefox everything seems as it should be except that all I can do is read the posts/threads. It will not let me reply or start a new thread. What it is like is when you are not logged in and not a memberthe site appears that way. No reply Icon or New thread Icon. But now here is the what is really weird. I used my daughters laptop and signed in through Firefox and everything workes great. I also used my laptop and went through Internet Exployer and it works fine, Si I figured something was wrong so I did a restore to 2 days ago when I know all was correct. Yep you guessed it Still will not let me do anything but read when I log in through FireFox. I am stumped. Any help out there. Thanks Rick
  20. Are the mufflers identical between the Mark I and Mark 22 lst Editions? Could the Mark II's be a tad longer? Just curious. Thought I read something about this at one time but can't find it now so I refer to those much more knowledgeable than I.
  21. I know most guys don't bother to read the tags attached to the clothing they buy. But it's time to start taking a closer look when you see one like this. At least it's PC and honest.
  22. I’m new to the MC world. The ’03 RSV is my first bike. Acquired this past summer I soon determine my legs height needed to be increased to touch the pavement. Rick Buttler modified my seat, a big help. The bike was a REPO. You would think I bought a problem, a lemon. Maybe not, runs OK. Wait-a-minute, I don’t have a history to reflect on to make this judgment I’ve read the “TechTalk”, and I probably need the rear shock. But this carb sync, lean adjustment, AIS, etc. although not Greek to me, I am looking for help. Anybody around Houston, 77021, who would like to help a retired guy …lets get together. My first long trip was to Galveston, it was an education. Those who have made the trip may recall the long left-sweeping curve entering the Causeway. ( After reading “How to Ride Like a Pro” on YouTube, I wanted to apply some of what I learned). I was at 65 mph, counter steering, leaning left and I could not hold the turn. CF was pulling me to the outside of the curve. I shifted a good 5 ft. I’m an avid read of the TecTalk, I enjoy the comments and helpful hints. No regrets on my ’03 purchase, I wish I had made the purchase 10 yrs earlier. It's a fun ride.

    Hello

Just wanted to say Hi to everyone here at venturerider. I have read quite a bit and just had to join. You guys have just to much fun!!!
  24. I'm trying to take out my headlight bulb to replace it but I can't figure how to reach it. I've read the manual, read some of the posts and am still confused. Do you reach it from the front side or the back side? The front headlight assembly has one screw at the bottom. If you remove this does it allow you to slide out the headlight assembly and access to the bulb or do you try to reach in from the back amidst the maize of wires and try to access it from there? Thank you for your help in advance. Chris
  25. This was aimed at the automotive industry but would be an interesting read for Yamaha : http://www.autoobserver.com/2010/11/academic-researchers-conclude-product-matters---a-lot.html
