  1. Any body on site a guru on compressors for Arobic systems?? The type I have has " Sliders" for lack of what they are called, that pump the air in as they spin in a housing, I have been trying for over a month to get these replaced and no one can get me the parts that I need ( TheSliders) the electric moter and pump itself are good so I don`t want to spend big bucks on the whole thing if I don`t have too. Any help would be great!! Thanks, Kreg
  2. Just purchased an 05 Venture, this bike has been sitting for about a year. The previous owner bought it as a rebuilder, it has some damage on right side, all cosmetic no structural or mechanical. Anyway he said when he bought it he charged the battery and it started right up and ran good. Now it acts as if its not getting gas to the carbs,(fires and chugs some with choke out but wont take off and run) I have no juice to the fuel pump, is there a relay? all the fuses that I can find are ok. I unplugged the pump and hot wired it and it seems to be locked up, wont run acts like a dead short. Any suggestions??
  3. i just bought off of ebay a BRAND NEW V-FACTOR MOTORCYCLE AIR SHOCK PUMP. THIS PUMP IS HAS A DIE CAST BASE AND 2 - 3 PSI BLEED OFF BUTTONS FOR PRECISE ADJUSTMENTS.0-60 PSI GUAGE WITH A 360" SWIVEL ON THE AIR HOSE AND A 9" LENGTH. i got it for 29.95 and free, yea free shipping. i did an ebay search for motorcycle hand pump. I hope i did ok as most members have the progressive suspension hand pump. the cheapest i could find progressive was here - http://www.debrix.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=20118-M1 for 38 dolla's and 13.5o cent fur shipping. when it arrives, i will put it to use & see how our RSV behaves under a little bit of pressure. carb tune stuff is next on the list of tools to aquire. dale in La
  4. I'm goin to tacoland for several months on my antique. What old bike parrts fail the most? I know it's the one you are not carrying! My guess- a TCI, starter and relay, fuel pump. There is a limit!
  5. So I got my shock air pump in today and went to add air the the shocks. It had zero in both front forks and rear shock. The rear pumped up to 30psi I'll try that and see how it is but the front forks will not pump up at all. What do you think is causing this? This sucks!!!! I have been ridding with no psi with my girl friend a total weight of around 325lbs and never had the rear bottom out. Should I run 30psi in it?
  6. just thought i'd throw this out here.......i used my heat gun to solder a couple of connections yesterday , and it worked great.......the wires were too big for my 100 watt iron, and because they were close to my fuel pump and seat, didn't wanna use the torch..i used a smaller nozzle that was no wider than the connection, turns out, the gun was faster than the torch anyway........
  7. So is this the type pump I will need to get the best results for my shocks/forks? Thanks http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400071415229&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT
  8. I used to ride an 03 VTX 1300 and it had a fuel pump, but on it people (myself included) would just remove it and replace the petcock to a style with no fuel pump (shut off diaphram in back) and bike ran fine because gravity would push gas to carb bowls anyways, hence less parts to break down while on the road. Has anyone ever done this on the RSV? It seems doable to me as the tank is above the carbs, cannot think of a reason it would not work, but sometimes I just cannot think.
  9. So who out there can help me find a pump to adjust the air in my shocks? I read somewhere that it needs to be a certain type to be able to add and remove the PSI Thanks
  10. Looking for the chrome fuel pump cover for my 92 Virago 1100. So, if anyone has one for sale or has a lead on one, sure would appreciate it.
  11. Well my as-is project continues, what started out as a simple dragging starter repair has now turned into a water pump overhaul as I found oil in the water. I have a couple questions that I couldn't find answers to in the Tech. talk. How much slack is there supposed to be in the plastic gear that runs the pump, where mine sits on the pin there is noticable slack, is that normal? How many other places are there where oil can get into the water besides the head gaskets and which are the most likely? My trike has 44,800 miles on it. Also I did find a crack in the water seal, hard to believe oil can get into the water through that hair line crack. As usual any help is appreciated.
  12. My fuel pump got progressively worse on our ride to Sturgis, so I bypassed the pump to keep on the road. I knew there would be a few long distances between gas stations in a few areas, and was able to locate a pump from a crashed Royal Star. When we got back, I took the bad pump to the new Yamaha Dealer in Bakersfield. After explaining why I did not bring the bike in to have them diagnose the pump failure, Dennis said he would contact Yamaha and see if they would give me a new pump. Three days later, here I sit with a new one in my hand. A good shop, people who care, and a great warranty. I'm really liking Yamaha!!!
  13. Got a question. The company I work for has a hydraulic lift on our dock. The tank and pump for it is inside in a cabinet next to my work area. The other day smoke came rolling out of the cabinet so I killed the power and opened it up. On the pump assembly there is a shaft that sticks out and there is a coil on it. That was fried and the cause of the smoke. The lift will still work but it will drop back down to ground level when you release the button on the control. They had a company repair guy (shade tree) come in and he spent three days working on it. This morning the lift was working but when I inspected the pump I saw he had removed the coil and not replaced it. He did some rewiring (hack job) and left it at that. The "repair" work he did it sloppy and left bare wires. So with that info can anybody tell me what this coil does? It's a Delta Power Company DOL25 24 VAC. Fits a 1/2 shaft. I have some safety concerns about this repair and want to know how this works and what it does.
  14. Ever since my crash I rebuilt the bike the right side was heavily damaged and the cruise control brain was damaged I acquired another one but it appears it doesnt work. The vacuum pump checks ok, the switches check ok. The display lights up but does not give any trouble codes. If I disconnect the vacuum pump it will give a trouble code. The light powers up and all the lights work but the cruise will not turn on at any speed. Any ideas and is there any way to check the brain box?
  15. if the water pump leaks after you stop the engine.. does that mean you need a new water pump? or can you get the parts to fix it? is it simple to fix? does any one have one to sell? Curious minds NEED to know.. :crying::bang head: thanx..
  16. I got home from our long trip to PA where I experienced a weird shut down which turned out to be a weird fuel pump issue. I was emailing a friend about it and he details to me how his bike is shutting down on the side of the road but restarting again after a few minutes. Strangely enough, I asked him if his signal lights are flashing fast to which he replied he 'thought' they had but they are not consistent. He's pretty sure they flashed rather fast when he was pulling over onto the shoulder when the bike conked out. I sent him the info of what happened to mine so he can see about getting his fuel pump checked out. I'm tempted to call the Yamaha tech reps to find out if these fast flashing signals are a trouble shooting diagnostics.. Hmmm I'm happy to report that after the fuel pump was replaced on my bike, it's been awesome and working so well that we even climbed Mount Washington on the way home.. Just had to do it because it was there.. (note: it's a much easier climb up now as they paved the last part up to the summit now.. there is only a short dirt section left.. but it's so easy to climb now.. )
  17. I have an 83 venture with a lot of good parts, water pump, rebuilt last year stator still good tci, works carb assembly fuel pump coils good head light assembly have trunk and side bags this bike was on the road last year and run great it just started leakin oil and second gear is gone I had the bike runing this spring. I was going to put this stuff on e-bay but I thought I'd give you guys first shot
  18. Are there any of the local folks that might have a auto- AC Vac. pump??? my ac compresser went south Sat. I am going to change all of the parts, flush the system myself. but I will need to find a vac. pump to use on it... I am going to check the tool rental place today and see if they have one... Thanks, Kreg
  19. Just starting this thread - I'll add more as I find it . . . If you are aware of any other alternatives to expensive factory parts, especially if you have used one yourself and had satisfactory results, please message one of the moderators to have the information added here. Where a particular part has a related Tech Library article, that link is the last one. Clutch - More of an upgrade than just a replacement, PCW Racing sells a stronger spring and an upgrade kit at very reasonable prices. Their link is below, but at last check they didn't have on-line ordering. Another option (and more expensive) is the Barnett pressure plate. Most slipping clutches on the 2nd Gens can be completely fixed with just the stronger springs - no need to replace the friction or steel plates. http://www.pcwracing.net/ - call them at 518-346-7203 and tell them you want the spring upgrade kit for a Royal Star Venture http://www.barnettclutches.com/ Clutch Upgrade - VentureRider.Org Coils - really should be a number of alternatives here, but I do not have any details. Fuel Pump - Most external low pressure/low volume fuel pumps should work - stock pump has a 3 PSI rating and costs over $200. Look for a solid state pump sold for old VWs or jeeps. Here are a couple of links for replacement pumps under $50: Autozone 4-7 PSI NOTE: since this pump is double the pressure of the stock pump, I would not use it unless I could not find any other. Autozone 2-3 1/2 PSI JCW 1 1/2-4 PSI JCW 1 1/2-3 1/2 PSI http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.+Gasket/720/42S/10002/-1 http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/facetpumps.php Parts 40105 and 40171 https://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?A=BK_6101051_0067330545&An=0 General note on available pumps - most (probably all) of these pumps are Facet brand fuel pumps, and the correct Facet part number is 42S (also goes by 40105). Facet has recently replaced their old cube pumps with new Posi-Flo pumps, and the correct part number for the Posi-Flo is 04S (also goes by 60104). Either part number may be preceded by "PRO" or "FEP". Also note that the 40171 pump is the ONLY one that has both a check valve and positive shutoff, so it would be the best choice for use on a motorcycle that does not have an automatic fuel shutoff when the engine is off (such as ours). All of the other pumps allow fuel to flow even when the power is off, so a leaking float valve could lead to engine damage if the petcock is left on. Fuel filter - http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/MGD0/33011.oap?pt=N1219&ppt=C0262 - You need one with at least a 5/16" connection. Any universal filter will work if you just want to relocate it, but this one will actually fit perfectly in place of the original (and despite what you may have heard, it is NOT that difficult to change! Oil filter - There are lots of filters available; instead of trying to list them all, here is a link to a cross reference (we use Type 5 - the filters are at the bottom), along with several other links for information on filter quality: http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Filters.html#OilFilters http://www.tobycreek.org/oil_filters/index.shtml Paint - Not many options here other than ColorRite (www.colorrite.com), or have it matched by a professional paint shop. I strongly recommend the paint shop and that you avoid ColorRite (see my product report here:http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36321&highlight=paint) Rear Shock - The only alternative is from Works Performance - costs more than stock, but it is rebuildable, where the stock one is just trash when it goes out. One source for the Works Performance shock is: www.buckeyeperformance.com Thermostat - Should be an automotive cross reference, but we do not have one confirmed yet. Front Turn Signal bulbs - Starting in 2005 Yamahaha went to weird 3-prong bulbs - but no need to waste your money on them. Just buy a standard 1157 and remove the lower pin! The remaining high pin is indexed correctly to install the bulb with the correct filament connections (low for running light, bright for turn), and it will stay in place forever. The pin is often easily removed by simply prying on it with a pcket knife, or use a file, or simply rub it on the cement curb. Valve shims - Any 25mm shims should work. Here is a link to a Sudco shim kit that lists lots of different bikes that use the same shims: http://www.sudco.com/25valveshims.html Valve Adjustment - VentureRider.Org Valve shim tool - 35-3462 .... $38 from http://www.justatv.com/pages/valve_shim_tools/valve_shim_tools.htm Wheel Bearings - Check the existing bearing - it will probably have a standard number on it that any bearing shop can cross. Be sure to buy only name brand bearings, such as SKF, Timken, Federal Mogul or NTN and get sealed bearings if that is what came out. You can save a couple of more bucks by getting bulk, un-boxed cheap Chinese bearings, but you won't like how fast they die! Front - 6004 (unverified), 2 each Rear -
  20. Our Engineering Lab Manager just sent the guys in the lab an e-mail where he had filled up with gas and used his debit card. When he checked his bank account balance the next morning, he had a $75 hold for that purchase. He called his bank and they told him that alot of gas stations are now doing this for purchases at the pump. One of the guys in the lab asked his wife that works at a bank and she said she is seeing a $100 hold for each purchase from the pump at some gas stations. The last time I was on a big group ride with about 30 bikes and we stopped for gas, everyone did the "pay-at-pump" thing. If you were on a ride that had several fillups, you better make sure you have plenty of money in your checking account if you are going to pay at the pump. Otherwise those $10 purchases could end up being a lot more if the bank tags you for insuffient funds in your account because hundreds of dollars are on hold. I called our local tv news program and they were not aware of this, but were very interested in what I had to say. Also, the banks are not interesting in doing anything about this as they are making easy money from insuffient fund charges on each transaction involved. It also appears that purchases paid for inside are charged only for the amount of the purchase. RandyA
  21. My 2007 Venture with 18,000 miles has developed a strange noise. Sounds like its coming from the motor. Not very loud. 5 or 6 times then quite, and then 5 or 6 times then quite, etc. The noise is a lite knock. Clutch in or out. When I raise the idle speed it's hard to hear, but I don't know if it's gone. At first I thought maybe a fuel pump noise, half clogged filter? I going to take it to a Dealer tomorrow, but I thought maybe someone else has had this.

  23. The day started out well enough, 86er, Ediddy and myself decided to take the back roads home from MD at Dons. We were doing fine till we reached Ashland, Ky around 5:30 in the afternoon Sunday. While passing through town Eddie picked up a small bolt in his tire, so we pulled into a church parking lot to check it out. Sure enough there is the head of a bolt sticking out of the tire, so off to the auto parts store for some plugs. So after Todd returned with the kit we proceeded to pull the bolt out of the tire and you wont believe the size of this thing.(see pic). We get it plugged up and start to pump it up with Todds little air pump and it up and quits..........guess what, off to the parts store again for a new pump. A short time later we are pumping the tire up with the new pump, so Todd and I try to see whats wrong with his pump, so we plug it into my power port in my saddle bag, nothing, so I plug my Sirrius radio back into it and poof. the wires start smoldering and melting and by the time I get my seat off we have a small fire going on under it.............put it out and remove the tool tray, hole burned in it, and so does the battery, about the size of a dime, we cover that with some clay like sticky substance to prevent he acid from leaking out and causing ore damage.. Cause of fire, something shorted in the plug and the fuse didnt blow, we found it melted into the plug housing still intact. All is well, no damage to the bike, now I have to find a replacement plug for my radio....... While we were there the church members were returning for Sunday evening service, many stopped and asked if we needed help and on older gentleman who pulled in on a V Star 1100, asked if he could assist and that if we became stranded he would gladly put us up overnight till we could get the tire fixed..........great little town that Ashland. All in all not a bad trip even with this, it just kept the trip from being borin Check out the pics, notice how much stuff Todd had to remove from his bags before he found what we needed..............
  24. Ok, so after many trials and tribulations, i finally got the old beast up and running. However now I'm having some heat issues. Went for a 100 mile shakedown ride after I got it back together, and everything was fine. Rode it 50 miles into work that night, did fine until I got into town. stopped at a stop light, and noticed the heat guage creeping up. took off from the light, and it dropped (and I mean dropped, like split second went from bottom of the red to middle of the green). It did fine rest of the way to work. went to come home sunday afternoon, it did just fine until I got onto the highway. Guage creeped up to the red again, and just stayed right at the bottom of the red. Pulled over at an exit ramp, waited it out for a bit so it could cool off, got back on the highway, just fine for another 20 miles, guage goes back up to bottom of the red. Leapfrogged it the rest of the way home. Thermostat was replaced with the NAPA 156 two weeks ago (gasket fell apart in my hand, had to RTV the housing, new gasket and o-ring are ordered and hopefully will be here tomorrow). Does this behavior indicate the water pump is going out? If so, anyone happen to have one they want to get rid of? I can't seem to find it on the parts diagram, and I'm really hoping it's not going to be too big of an ordeal to replace.. been without my bike for two years, really don't want to spend another summer wishing I was riding. as an afterthought I looked in the classifieds and saw there's a water pump out of an '84. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/2071/cat/6 any reason why this wouldn't work in my '86?
  25. There has to be an award for this goof!!!! I decided to go for a ride today and needed to fuel up about 50km's or so from home. When I stopped at the pump a guy started chatting to me so not really paying attention I filled my tank with Diesel fuel! When I went inside one of the young girls said to me "does your bike take diesel" I hadn't noticed the 3/4" Diesel letters on the pump or Diesel written on the nozzle cover with a black pen!! I owned a diesel Jetta a few years ago and always looked for the green nozzle and clearly marked separate pump. This one had regular gas on one side and diesel on the other. So need less to say panic set in.... I pushed it to the side and and got my hands on a gas can and drained it all out....took off the tank and got every last drop out. So if anyone is curious it took 21.475 liters (5.67 gallons) with the tank completely drained. One good thing.....I installed a Talon alarm last week and wasn't in the mood to remove the tank to run the wire for the indicator light.....that job is done now!! Just call me Dumba$$ Keith
