  1. I'm not sure I have a fuel pump problem or not. I've had it down for a couple of days for some mods. Lowered the front forks and put in some Ponch gauges. I had the fairing completely off and back on. I started it and let it run to test the gauges and everything seemed to do just fine. I could hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when I turned the ignition on. Now after I put the fairing back on and finished up with everything I turn the ignition on and there is no fuel pump sound. It still starts and runs but I don't get any pump sound. Now here's the question......What's wrong with it? One more thing I have an 94 Road Star and I took the fuel pump off of it, some time ago, does anyone ever run RSV's without fuel pumps on a permanent basis?
  2. I put the bike up on the lift to do an oil change and noticed staining around and below the weep hole on the water pump. I've read a few threads that mention replacing the impeller with a metal one. Can someone point me to a supplier that carries the necessary parts?
  3. I've been searching for what's wrong with my Millenium. It's idling a little lumpity lump crappy. Idle slows down sometimes. It has only died out once while idling. Seems to run well down the road. Today, I did the following: Replaced the plugs (had 17k miles on them). #2 and #4 looked fine. #1 and #3 were a little darker, but not bad at all. Replaced the fuel filter (but the old filter still flowed fuel very well). Drained all carbs (very slight bit of water in #3 bowl). With the bowl drains open, I ran the pump to push new fuel through them and out the drain hose. Drained the tank and inspected fuel (looked fine). Checked the main and reserve petcock screens (both were clear). Tested the fuel pump (clicking along and shooting fuel, albeit, I don't know how well it should shoot fuel). This is what I find happening: Every time I turn on the key, the pump will run for about 6 seconds. I turn the ignition to "on", but don't try to start the engine. The pump runs for 6 seconds. I turn off the key for a second or so and turn it back to "on", the pump again runs for 6 seconds. It does this no matter how many times I cycle through this procedure, although never trying to start the bike. I have never before noticed the pump running every time I turn on the ignition. Usually, when the bike has been sitting for a few days, of course the pump will pump up several clicks when I turn on the ignition. But normally, if the bike has been ridden recently, the pump would only click a time or two and it was all it needed. I don't believe that I have a stuck float as I don't distinguish any gas in the oil. I haven't had the carbs off yet. Probably gonna go there next. Has 54k on the bike now. But I'm still wondering if the pump is working properly.
  4. Hi guys.. buddy and I ran into a weird one today.. After a week of torrential downpour and heavy winds, the weather finally cleared enough to get the bikes out for a cold windy run.. we're die hard riders who refuse to put their bikes away.. When I got to my buddy's house his bike was idling very oddly...and this is where everything goes wrong to worse.. Full choke ON, bike barely idling.. but it's idling prolly sounds like 900 rpm.. if you touch the throttle, the bike dies.. If you take the choke off, the bike dies.. It needs full choke and don't play with the throttle.. VERY odd indeed.. We DID see this a few weeks ago in New Hampshire on a late season road trip.. but the bike cleared itself inside of 5 minutes and ran 100% since then.. so odd. But this time, no go.. Nothing you could do would clear what ever was causing it.. Then we noticed that the sound was getting even more odd.. Hello, what's this.. We then noticed that the front jugs were not making heat at all.. and then ONLY the rear left jug.. (I have to stop touching hot metal exhausts.. ) try as we could, the bike would not start and stay running.. Not good.. Now, the bike had been sitting in his garage for a week, semi heated, but with about a 1/4 tank of fuel in it.. shouldn't have made too huge a difference.. We added another 1/2 gallon of fuel to the tank with some SeaFoam.. ya never know.. but no change. It just wouldn't catch.. When you cranked the starter, you could hear the one jug catching but not igniting completely and the other jugs just going along for the ride, not firing.. I don't recall a lot of raw fuel smell either.. windy as it was.. Battery was on a tender all week before this.. So, we abandoned his bike for the winter.. I sadly said goodbye to my friend and hauled out of there for a quick spin before heading home and getting some fresh fuel into my gas tank for the next storage period.. And I get the phone call, the bike started and is running 100% fine.. HUH? Just like it did in New Hampshire.. We thought then that the bike, sitting outdoors in the overnight cold rain might have had some water in it.. But what the? Breaking it down to the bare minimums, we thought what about the fuel filter? I changed his filter in July, perhaps 15,000 miles ago.. Not long in TIME but perhaps due in mileage? My fuel filter had clogged so badly that it starved the engine last year.. Then what about the pump? My pump had died prematurely and in such a weird and wild manner, maybe his is doing the same thing? But while we were cranking the engine over earlier on, the pump was getting warm, indicating to me perhaps that it is work OK.. otherwise a failed pump wouldn't make any heat if it's not working? Gremlins.. what the heck.. No idea what caused this failure today, its very similar to what happened a month prior.. and now the bike works 100% no probs, lots of power and almost like it never happened.. How do you start trouble shooting such a problem? The bike is under warranty but the shops here are lacking in experience on these types of bikes, he might never see his bike back again.. Any thoughts or idea what to look for the NEXT time the bike does this again.. if ever? Thanks M8
  5. Since I'm at work & can't look it up, can someone tell me if the fuel pump is in the tank? This morning I started off to work, as usual. Got about a half mile up the road & bike starts stumbling. Oh yeah. Forgot to flip petcock yesterday back to reserve. I usually don't put it to "ON", but, just to keep things working, I turned it down. Turned it back to reserve, but, bike will hardly start, if it starts at all, then dies within 15 seconds or so. I was actually going to get gas before heading to work, as I was 14 miles into "F". Good thing from my home to where I was, is all up hill, so, I turned around & coasted back down the hill to home & took the truck to work. I've heard it's not good to run the gas down to empty if the fuel pump is in the tank because it uses the gas as a lubricant & coolant & if you're that low, it could damage the fuel pump. Is this an issue with this bike? I've never had a problem like this before & I almost always fill up with about 5.25-5.75 gallons. I now have 40K miles on it & another 7 months on the warranty, so, if it is the fuel pump, I assume it's covered. Any other ideas out there? I guess it could also be a clogged fuel filter? Thanks.
  6. First of all, usually I hear the pump click a few times before I start 'er up. Last night (it was much colder than usual, not that it makes a difference) when I was heading home from work I got on, turned the key and didn't hear anything. The bike ran perfectly fine all the way home (and I had ~145 miles on that particular tank). For kicks, about 1 mile away from my house I turned the fuel off, pulled in and parked. I let the bike sit for a minute or so and turned the key ON again to my surprise I didn't hear the clicking. I am presuming that my pump is toast (I will check the pump by jumping it from the battery when I get home to verify pump and not the relay)... My questions are this: 1) Will our bikes run quite well (hard acceleration, high speeds, etc) even if the pump isn't pumping and I only have 1-2 gallons left in the tank? 2) What all is necessary to pick up if I go pick up one of those Mr. gasket pumps? Do I just need to get the appropriate fittings so that the hoses will effectively be out of one end? I recall reading that the #42s pump was no longer an option because it was redesigned - what is the difference between the 'new' and 'old' designs and what is it about the 'new' design that makes it not work for us? Muchos grassybutt folks. (That's thanks a lot for those of you that don't speak spanglish).
  7. Got on the bike yesterday, turned the key, and the engine would crank but not start. After turning the key on and off a couple of times, it finally started. While riding to lunch, the bike just shut down in the middle of the street. Played with the switches again and eventually it started again. I got it home and noticed that I wasn't hearing the gas pump clicking when I turned it on. Tested the pump and it is great. At one point while it was running, I accidently bumped the ignition key and the bike died but the lights stayed on. That is when I noticed a little play in the key. Is it safe to assume that I need a new main switch? Here are the two main questions....Is there a way to get the switch off without taking the radiator off? And...Why would the engine crank but not start? (I'm hoping that I don't have another problem.) Thanks in advance for any and all help!
  8. I'm working on a '86'vr that I bought as a parts bike. The dealer said that it would only run if they poured gas down the carbs. He didn't want to mess with it. Turns out the fuel pump relay had some thing rattling around inside it, cut it open and found little electrical stuff burned off. Question 1. Can I use the Class relay in place of fuel relay? It plugs right in and runs the fuel pump but, it looks way different than the correct relay. (I'm eliminating the Class system) Question 2. Is the diode in the starting circuit essential or can it be bypassed? When in neutral the start button wouldn't work I pull the clutch lever, button works. Tested diode D2 not working properly shows infin. on both poles D1 ok resister read 8.3 omhs. When I jump the D2 poles the start button works fine. Mike
  9. 2007 RSMV 24500 miles. Started bike up today and let it warm up. Took off and it felt like the bike was only running on 2 cylinders. Got about 1/4 mile and had to pull into a parking lot. As soon as I pulled in the clutch the bike died. Tried to restart and bike fired but did not start. Pulled out choke all the way and it started and but had to work pretty hard to keep runnning. Shut bike off and turn key back on to check electrical stuff. All appeared to be working. Dash and all lights were normal. Let sit about 10 to 15 minutes turned key on, heard fuel pump running and started up bike. It ran like nothing ever happened. I turned arround and went home. I wonder how long it will be before it happens again?. Guess I'll be calling dealer tomorrow to have them order a pump.
  10. On a 2nd Gen RSV, how do you know if the water pump is circulating the coolant? Also, when should the radiator fan kick on?
  11. I have a knock coming from the lower end of the engine, on the right side, in the water pump area. It's usually heard at idle and up to around 1500 rpm. I found some other threads about a similar problem, it has been recommended to sync the carbs, I checked them and they are spot on. I have fresh Rotella synthetic in it with no change. The coolant is full as well. Is it possible that the pump needs rebuilt? The motor has 70k miles. I'm really concerned about the knock, I just bought the bike and don't want to rebuild the motor already. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Briley.
  12. I have an '83 venture that runs ok when fed gas by gravity. I have no clicking at fuel pump when moving run switch off and on. Just pulled the bike in so I have no history except the plate has a 1999 reg sticker on it. How would I check the pump function? and advice is welcome. (new here, not new to fixing bikes) Mikel
  13. I've been too busy wrestling with the leak in the '91 to do anything else, but now that it's down to a Harley Drip it's on to other issues. Mainly the CLASS controller. What a saga. The controller was giving E1 and E4 errors, so I tore into it and did some PCB soldering. Now I'm not the greatest solderer in the world, but I'm not all that bad either. After working over all the brown rings I hooked the controller back up and .... nothing. I could get the pump to give a couple of beats and then quit by plugging and unpluging the coupler. So I went ahead and piggybacked another compressor and it did the same thing. This told me it wasn't the pump, but the controller. So I drug out another controller and plugged it in. E4 error. So soldered it's PC. Plugged it back in. E4 error. Grrrr!!!!!! OK, one more time. I soldered everything I could see with a magnifying glass. Ate dinner. Went back out. Plugged it in and the CLASS ran like a champ. I would have taken the bike out for a ride this morning but due to forseen circumstnces it's going to be Monday. Gonna be strange sitting on a 1stGen again. So the lesson is... If at first you don't succeed...try..try...again....
  14. For the benefit of all.......I hate to report that the fuel pump Bubber sent me...... Boomer.... The "Magnificent Pygmie Master" and PITA to all...... ps: Bubber I owe you a big one my friend and I look forward to the day when I can shake your hand and knock down a few cold one's with you!!!
  15. I fear the fuel pump has given up the ghost on my 06. Won't start at all with the choke out....maybe 1-2 clicks from the fuel pump when I turn the key. Tank full of fresh gas....new fuel filter....everything else working fine. They shoot horses don't they? Boomer.....well stuck for a while it looks like.....sigh.
  16. For those of you using or contemplating using the Mr. Gasket #42S fuel pump, be advised that the design has been "improved". Formerly, the input and output nipples were threaded into the pump. That allowed us to insert right- and 45 degree-pieces between the pump and the nipple, allowing the Mr Gasket pump to work for us. The new design has a fixed output nipple, and a long one at that. Consequently, I do not believe that the Mr. Gasket fuel pump will be an acceptable replacement. I went to a different store, and they had one old style pump in front of three new pumps. I snarfed that up, just in case I ever need another.
  17. Not even sure where to start on this one... For some background, I ran the bike completely out of gas about 3 weeks ago... not far from home, so I was moving again in minutes. Anyways, since then I have been plagued with a sticking float or floats. We went to Marcarl's M&E a couple of weeks ago, and part-way thru the afternoon ride, I could smell gas (gasoline, that is...) and the engine was bogging. When the group stopped at a Tim Horton's for a break, there was certainly fuel coming through the overflow hoses to just in front of the rear wheel. I limped it home, saw that Carbs #1 and #4 were pouring fuel out of the overflows after I pulled the airbox off. I shut the fuel off at the tank and let the carbs empty themselves as I did a light drum solo on each carb body. I turned the fuel back on, hit the key, and after a few clicks, the fuel pump shut off with nothing out of the overflows. Good... problem solved. The next morning, I rode about 40-45 miles to Waterloo to pick up some friends on their bike, and escort them back to our place. My machine ran great. However, on the return trip to take them home, at least one float stuck again... same old issue : gas out the overflow tubes, and engine flooding. Got home. Emptied the carb bowls again, then let the pump suck straight Seafoam into the bowls. I let it sit overnight. Checked the next morning, and when I hit the key.. one click from the fuel pump.. no more. Good. That fixed it. Rode 2 days later... guess what ? Stuck float. Gas. Overflow. Expletives from me, disapproving eyerolls from wife. Redo Seafoam treatment. Let it sit 2 days. Fuel pump shuts off as it should. No fuel dripping anywhere. But, I ride for an hour. Smell gas. Engine bogging. Four letter words in abundance. Call Carl and reserve a space in his gorgeous shop last Monday. Bring my spare rack of carbs with me, figuring I can replace a bad float or floats, valves, etc. Remove carbs, finally get backs off of bowls - they are whistle clean inside. Valves certainly do not look damaged. Check the bouyancy of the floats.. all is well. Spray the seats of the valves liberally with carb cleaner, reassemble. All works as it should... the bowls fill, then the fuel pump shuts off. No overflowing fuel. Do little happy dance. Change plugs as the old ones have seen a lot of Seafoam and excess fuel. Seems to be running the way it should. Go for a ride tonight - and I don't even have to tell you to guess... I smell gas as I slow to a stop about 30 miles into my ride. Arrrrgh... One of Carl's (1 Gen's answer to Yoda) thoughts on Monday was that it could be the fuel supply line from the pump gradually disintegrating.. allowing little pieces of former hose to clog the float valves. It certainly could be... but why always carbs #1 and #4 ? The are diagonally opposite each other. I should be able to replace the fuel line tomorrow.. that is an easy thing to try and not expensive. However, before I run completely out of curse words, anyone else have any other thoughts if this repeats itself again ?
  18. So I call the Yammi Dealer in Baton Rouge (Friendly Yamaha; 10939 Airline Highway) and explain to the Service Manager my situation with the pooched fuel pump. She confirmed my VIN Number and that the scoot was still under Warranty. Trade the pooched pump for a new one and save them a bit of time in labor? Not on your life. The scoot has to be brought in and they have to do everything. I have to wonder if the folks at Yammi who set policy really have the customers best interest at heart when it comes to stuff like this. I have NO intention of trailering the scoot there and letting them do anything. Just gives me a bad case of red a$$ and solidifys my decision to keep my 06 and never buy another new scoot from them..... no matter what upgrades/improvements they come out with on the future Ventures. Boomer....who's really gonna dish out a beating to dem pygmies now.
  19. Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas as to where to start looking for my problem. I started my bike ( 96 Royal Star) yesterday with no problems and ran to the store. When I came out the bike would not start. It seemed like a low battery with just a few clicks being heard. I was near a hill so I rolled on down ,popped the clutch and the bike fired up. I got about a mile down the rode when I got a loud backfire and when I looked down all my gauges where going crazy. Speedo was bouncing and the other lights were blinking madly. I was able to get the bike home as long as I did not accelerate. The bike did hold an idle. After I got home I turned the bike off and tried to restart it but there was nothing but some faint clicking that sounded like the fuel pump trying to work.I charged the battery overnight although it really didn't need it and tried starting the bike this morning. I just get the fuel pump clicking. The headlights and neutral light are very dim but do come on. Any ideas? Thanks
  20. Needed an air shock pump for the '99, and found one on Ebay #360254648832 for about half the price Harley was asking.... for what looked like the same they have except this one was silver... Finally got it, and it's terrible. It was rated 0-60psi, but had to pump like he!! the get the front forks up to 10# and I gave up trying to get the rear shock past 35#. I wouldn't recommend this pump to anyone. I'm going to go visit a bicycle shop to see what they have.... You know what they say...Experience is costly. Hope this keeps another member from making the same mistake....
  21. Last wednesday we were getting ready to leave for Gatlinburg with 27 other folks for a weekend of riding and fun, naturally I had to work late so was already running late. At about 10 pm I went out to hook up the trailer and check all the lights and stuff and the bike just shut down on me. I determined that the fuel pump was not working so I called a buddy of mine who rides a wing trike but also has a yamaha two wheeler for solo riding. Told him that I would have to wait until the dealer opened the next day to get a pump and that I would just meet them up there later in the day. The first thing he said was to just come get his pump and make the trip and then get a replacement later! So at about 11 pm I was taking parts off of someone elses bike so that my trip wouldn't be ruined! Made the swap and the trip went great. I don't think many folks would have offered to let someone take parts off their bike in that situation so my hat is off to Roger McClure aka: Mama Chicken from Somerville Al.
  22. I know this has been beat on before but let me beat on it more. RSV quit running 3 times. Waited 15 minutes and it started. Ran another 1000 miles or more and did it again. Read about the problem on this forum. Told the dealer what I already knew and he agreed to call Yamaha to inquire. I got a new fuel pump under warranty. He won't tell what Yamaha said. Like Willie said I'm "on the road again" so I'm happy. Thanks for the information.
  23. Well, since my dealer here in Searcy does not have an "air pump" on the premises, I had to go ahead and buy one (which will probably only get used a couple of times), but at least I have it now. I may decide to RENT it to my dealer for $79.95/hour though. Wally
  24. Howdy to all and thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I bought a 90 Royale with 11k on it last Memorial Day,with the idea I would take a couple trips on it and make a few thousand on it selling it. By the 2nd day riding it I was hooked. What a nice piece of machinery. Since I'm never going to sell it (it's like brand new) I figured I better learn how to work on it. I've spent quite a few hours studying on this sight and found it to be a great resource. My first question is: speed bleeders vs vacuum pump. I've found posts on here in favor of both. My rear brake peddle feels plenty firm but doesn't work as well as my other bikes and there's plenty of pad left. I'm guessing bleeding is the place to start. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
  25. My parents are getting ready to replace there 25yr old bryant heat pump system with something more efficiant since they are getting 500 plus elec bills and cant get gas were they are. I know there are some real good systems out there and some bad ones who recomnds what and why?? Im trying to help them out with all the info I can. I did do some hvac for a awhile so I do know some but not who has the best and why. Thanks
