1. The scoot picked up some bad habits over the weekend and I don't know why. All of a sudden, the idle is real low, on acceration, in all gears, it started sputterring then eventually smooths out. On deacceration it backfires, if suddenly it sounds like a M-80, if not so suddenly not quite as loud. I pulled the plugs which are all realitively new, like a month old. They all have about the same light covering of black dry soot. Over the weekend I was riding two up pulling a trailor. Got any hints?
2. Was out to Big Dude's (Mike) house today to look at his grinder. He pulled a holeshot and when he went to grab second gear, he thought he missed it. Went to 3rd and it was there. Started making a grinding sound by the middle gear area, harrdly pulling itself down the road. Muffinman had him pull the final drive and driveshaft, all looks good. We pulled the middle gear cover off, cannot feel anything through there. Pulled the swingarm off and removed the output half of the pinion gear (which I thought would be gone) and it looked perfect. Pulled the clutch and could not find anything there. turning the inner clutch plate produced no grinding sounds. Dropped the oil pan, no extra materials in there. Before we disassembled everything, I started it and tried it myself. WIth clutch pulled in, no noise. As soon as you try to put it in gear, the grinding starts. As long as it's in gear, it will grind. Will hardly pull itself, even with my scrawny butt on it! I'm thinking we may have to pull the motor and split the cases to see whats going on in there, but any other opinions will be investigated first. Dan
3. I'm calling on the carb guru to help with this 99RS. It sat for 9 years, first 4 the owner would start it up and let it run until the fan came on. Last 5 years never started.Bike has less than 1500 miles on it! I pulled the carbs, opened the bowls and found lots of pretty brown varnish. Pulled all the jets and soaked in carb cleaner, blew them out with compressed air( hold on to the little ones, they are hard to find when you send them into air driven orbit) and visually looked into them to ascertain they were clear. reassemble carbs. Use round gage pin to bench set the sync, had them within about .1mm of each other for butterfly opening, each one qualified to the master carb with idle screw. Installed carbs and finally got it to fire and run. Left side heated almost immediately, right side did not. Put my mercury manometer on, right side was a bit higher on vacuum than left. Adjusted all 3 screws in proper order at about 1000rpms, blip throttle and let it settle and they returned to level setting(within.5mm from lowest to highest). Reassembled bike, test ride showed cylinders were lagging, pulled plugs, right side is lean. Fast forward to 4th time carbs come off, I checked sync again, looked good on gauges, rides rough, winshield shake and such. I just blindly reached in and "tweaked" the front screw on right side, rode it again. A little less vibration. Fast forward, 10 or 12 stops and it runs pretty smooth just blindly tweaking the 3 screws. Put the mercury vacuum gauge on again and right side is low on vacuum. But it is smooth after you get off idle. When starting cold it only runs on left side for a couple minutes then right side starts to show heat on the pipes. First 2 minutes you can hold the pipes and no heat, left side will burn you in the first 20 seconds. If you mist ether or gasoline into the right side intake it picks it up and idles up. My feeling is idle circuit is still plugged with gunk and varnish.Other than the brass jets what can be clogged?
4. I installed a MX radio about a year ago, and installed the Y spliter from Radio shack as instructed by the fine folks of this site, about a month ago, I lost my right side speakers only while on the XM, they worked fine with the reg. Radio, I opened up the fairing and was applying the contact greese to all connections, when I pulled apart the Y connector, I heard my speakers come on for a second..so I pluged it back in, nothing but the left side....hhhmmm...so I pulled it apart real slow...they worked...ok, so I found a rubber washer that was about 1/8in thick and installed it over the male end and plugged it back in...Shazam!!! they all worked again... so I taped it up real good and put on a few small tywraps to secure it and put the beast back together..all is still working to date. Has anyone else had to do this?? or am I the lucky one??

Good deal?

We went riding this weekend, and I found this... http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/royal20blue.jpg I bought it for $2000. Mine has more lights on the back, is in excellent shape, and the paint matches my bike exactly(stroke of luck). I just pulled it 150 miles home. It pulls great! Did I get hurt:thumbdown:, or did I do good?
6. I found this little homemade trailer on E-bay, but don't want to bid on it if it is too heavy to pull. It was designed to be pulled by a goldwing 1500, so I feel fairly safe. Item # 320355058863
7. Good morning all. I found an issue. When I let my 08' RSV set for a about a week than start it up and put in gear it want to take off and than dies. With clutch pulled I hit the starter and it will go about 6 inches and than engage. Any ideas. Thanks. Richard:confused24:
8. Finally pulled my TCI out for a "shake and bake", took the cover off and discovered a lot of battery acid fume corrosion from where the PO had taken the vent hose off the battery. That's the reason I had to repaint the frame last year when I did my second gear. Soooo, not sure if the board is affected way down deep in it's recesses, I'm looking for another TCI to fit an '84. Anybody got one they want to part with in good shape? I've got a few days as I also pulled the carbs to clean out. Appreciate your help, Dan

HI Gang

Haven't been on here in a while, been busy with life things this winter. Had a few health issues (minor), and a big cancer scare with my mother in law (Sam's mom). Thank God it seems to be negative so far, but we've been on pins and needles for a month or so. She will be seeing another specialist this week for a final diagnosis. Sam goes in this week for her final follow up on her little heart scare this summer, and I'm having a bunch of wisdom teeth pulled on Wed. I still think of you guys often and hope you're all doing OK with this crappy economy. We WILL be at MD so we'll see you all there. I'll be back posting a little at a time here. Vin
10. I took the new to me 87 venture out for the second time today. The first time I took it out I knew that the brakes were less than adequate. So after cleaning everything up, took her out again. I was cruising along at about 70mph,gave the brakes a quick test and they felt much better. All of a sudden the front wheel locked up, violently skidding from one side of the road to the other I somehow managed to hold onto it and get her pulled to the side of the road where I had to then call a buddy and get it trailered home. What in the he@#! do you guys think could have caused this? Now I am a little gun shy to take it back out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
11. I have changed quite a few rear driveshafts on 1st Gens and have never had one drop as it did today. When I pulled it there was a big clunk! Kind of dry!! It fell completely down and I'm having a time geting it back in.Always kept mine lubed good and if you are carefull you just pull it and slide it back in. Not this time. I fought it for about a hour and left it. How do you put it back. I pulled the rubber boot back but couldn't get to it. Is this the way to do it and I just need to pull boot completly off??
12. Both pulled and tongue weight limits. What're the limits? I've read that the RSV's warranty won't be void if a trailer is pulled and that it is the only MC that can pull one without voiding the warranty. Is that correct? If so, why doesn't the manual say anything about trailering?
13. Today. my signal lights quit working. I am real good about using my signal lights, so this was a big aggravation. When I got home, I pulled out my repair book and read up on the lights. I seemed to have power where I was supposed to so it looked like my relay was bad. When I pulled it out, I noticed it had a cover on it that could easily be disassembled. I took it apart and checked continuity and found a contact was not giving a good reading. I took a small piece of sand paper and doubled it over and rubbed it between the contacts. I plugged it back up and it is working fine. I have attached some pictures and you can see the contacts. RandyA
14. Finally, after being laid up and then recouperating from my bypass surgery, I got to go for a ride last weekend (7th). Rode up Hwy 31 to Montgomery where I spent the night. Took off Sunday morning to ride down 82 and 29 to Crestview and on down to the coast. I had driven this route this Spring in a bus only from South to North. Anyway, got to Union Springs where I rode around the town looking at old houses for a short time, then headed out of town. At the main intersection I had a red light. While waiting a car pulled up behind me. When the light turned green I looked and then slowly pulled out. The next thing I knew I was staring into the grille of a Dodge SUV on my right. I had no time to react; the SUV hit me, pushed me sideways about ten feet before it stopped and I fell over to the left. The bike went down hard. I rolled a little then layed there for a minute. Long story short, the impact broke the two bones just above my right foot and dislocated my ankle. They took me to Montgomery for surgery and I came home tuesday last week. I have just about given up on bikes. I am hoping that they total out the Wing, even though I really love it. And it only has 2350 miles on it. Two accidents in one year with quadruple bypass in between. And I have this horrendous scrape/bruise on the left side of my ribcage. I think that's where I hit the left handlebar going off. Well, I won't be making any ride-ins or meet and eats for at least 6 weeks. And then if I do attend it will be in my truck. I am over motorcycles. !!!!!!!
15. I noticed a noise coming from the rear end area when slowing down and coasting with clutch pulled in, I thought it was coming from the hub splines and pins needing greased so I pulled the rear wheel and greased them both. The sound is still there, it is a lower pitched sound that kind of warbles. So now I am wondering if it might be the u-joint as the bike has 57K. Does anyone know what is involved in checking u-joint for wear, or even replacing if it needs it?
16. When I was taking my fuel tank off to replace my ignition switch I think I broke the outlet off of my fuel petcock valve. I had loosened and pulled the clamp back on the fuel line but then the line didn’t want to come off. I tugged and tugged and twisted and tugged some more until POP off it came. That’s the good news. The bad news is - stuck in the end of the hose was the brass connector. Since I am a relative yamaha newby I am supposing that I pulled the connector sleeve right out of the petcock. It probably isn’t supposed to do this - am I right? Is it broken? I just ordered a replacement petcock but I can cancel it if somebody will tell me that this is the way the Yamaha petcock disconnects from the fuel line! Thanks
17. Ok folks. '99 w/ 42k mile. 1st clutch replaced at just over 16k with Barnett plates and springs due to slippage. Clutch seems strong (no slipping) but does not disengage when clutch lever is pulled in. Bled clutch fluid today and checked engine oil level (even topped it off) since it is after all a wet clutch. Still wants to pull when lever is pulled in. Short of pulling clutch out to look for warped plates, etc., which I don't think is case. Heard one comment that maybe plates got dry (bile has not been sitting) and best way to free them up is to get up to about 15MPH and lock up rear brake with clutch pulled in. Any help / suggestions would be appreciated. pa_don
18. When you go to reinsert drive shaft will it slide all the way in and still not be connected right or will it stop before being fully inserted if not connecting right. \ I pulled mine and greased it and it slid right back in no probs so before I button things up would like to know.\ \ Thanks John
19. I pulled my radiator overflow tank and pulled the 3 white wire connection apart... I ohmed it out to each other... nothing... I started the bike had black wire to neg side of batery and red probe to all 3 wires (1 at a time) and I got no Voltage... Am I doing something wrong? or did my stator wires some how become disconnected? Does the white plug have to be connected to produce voltage? I'm thinking the Dealer did something to this when I had my Shock Replaced, Cruise & Fuel gauge fixed under warranty. Of course my warranty is run out now and the work was done in March and I haven't done any long trips and have been putting on a tender every night... I kinda knew something was up a while ago when a few times I got a weak crank. Any suggestions??
20. My Step Son wrecked his 750 Suzuki this afternoon. He was getting on the parkway and an 18 wheeler had pulled into the other lane to let him in and then pulled back in on him. He said the last he remembered was hitting the brakes. It scattered parts for nearly 1/8 mile. Looked like the truck actually hit the bike. He had his leather on, but still has several scratches. This is his first day home on leave from the Army. Not a good way to start a vacation!!
21. I just put on 1 1/4 risers. Now I don't have any turn signals. Fuse is not blown. Throttle also is slow to return to idle when released. Horn, lights work. I tried to open up the signal, light and horn assembly to see if I pulled the wires loose. Took out the bolt in rear but can't get the cover off. Any suggestions on where to look or what to try. Thanks, labill
22. Started my 2004 RSV this morning after about 6 weeks of inactivity. It's the middle of winter here and I've been away for 5 weeks, touring the warmer climes of this great country in my tin top. Pulled the choke fully out, gave the throttle a twist, let it rest, hit the starter and the engine popped in to life after about 8 cranks. Let her idle a little to warm up, then when I tried to ease the choke off it wouldn't go. Moves about 1/4" at the most, but does not throw back to fully off. I've poked, pulled and pushed from both sides without over-doing it for fear of bending or breaking something. I GOTTA RIDE! Anybody have any clues? :puzzled: Thanks guys.
23. Can you feel it yet, getting excited, cant sleep, too many things still havent come together.........................:080402gudl_prv: Your probably going through the same emotions like I did for all the Vogels, especially the first one, Is anybody going to show.........wow.........pulled it off, can I do it again next year only bigger and better.............. Cant woit to get there.............Thanks for putting this on. :cool10:
24. Bought an Odyessy PC680 battery for my RSMV. The battery I got with the bike when I bought it in November/07, crapped out on me. Left me and the misses stranded in Port Dover on Friday the 13th in the pouring rain, mixed in with the thunder and lightning. Motorcycle people are great people, very friendly. A complete stranger from Alberta, visiting relatives, pulled his BMW MC up to mine, pulled out a set of booster cables and got me started. Gave him a big hug and a thank you, rode home in the rain. Today, pulled the old battery out, drove to Great Northern Battery in Hamilton and got myself the Odyessy. Hopefully no more problems for a while. I'm tired of the garbage that goes up for sale from places like China that dealerships dump into our bikes because they are so cheap. Made in North America, that's what I like.
25. Since starting to ride again last year, I had avoided testing out my rain gear till yesterday. Central IL was having those pop up storms all around, but the wife (on her Shadow Ace Tour) and I (on my 86 VR) took off for about a 30 mile ride in the country and a snack at an area DQ. When we got to the DQ storms were all across the Southern horizon where we needed to go to get home (10 miles) so we couldn't really go around them. Tried a quick run home but turned around when a wall of water was coming. Went to DQ, covered the bikes and went in for a salad (diets suck at DQ, but the salads were good). IT rained for about 1/2 hour and then stopped, but there were still dark clouds and lightning to the south. Called my younger son, the techie one, and with his magic wireless device, he pulled up a radar map and said if we took off quick there was a hole between two big storms. We hopped into our rain gear, through the wet covers in my trunk, and took off. Glad we did the rain gear because the wife had not ridden in rain since her 70's era Honda 550K that would stall out in the rain. She was leery enough about her new Honda, and didn't want her getting soaked. We stayed dry till within less than a mile from home and we pulled into my carport both laughing. the rain suits worked, the bikes didn't stall out and we had a fun ride. Oh, tornado was tearing up some homes just 5 miles away as we pulled into home base, but it missed us. Not a huge adventure, but enough for us!
