  1. While heading along the 401 to Guelph a piece of metal came out from under a car. Despite my efforts to avoid it, my front tire caught the edge of that crazy bouncing piece of metal. I got off at HWY 6 and I pulled off to inspect my tire to make sure I had no major concerns. While inspecting my front tire two Harley riders pulled off the road to see if I needed any help. I thought that was real kind of them., and wanted to mention it given the negative comments they sometimes get.
  2. While working on Sat I saw a midnight RSV on a trailer on I-10 W being pulled by a Ford F-150 in Jacksonville, then on my next trip about an hour later I saw an RSV with a voyager kit loaded on another trailer being pulled by a white Impala on I-295 N getting off on Commonwealth Ave here in Jax. ON Friday night I saw another RSV on a trailer. Three RSV's, loaded on trailers being pulled by vehicles with Florida tags. A very unusual sight. Unless there is a stolen vehicle ring operating here in town that specializes in Ventures.......
  3. On Friday, 9/9/2011, around 1:30 pm I was behind a 1st Gen at the off ramp of Hwy 599 n Interurban Ave S. making a left turn so I pulled up along side. He said that his is an 85 and recently purchased it and also is a new member of Venture Rider. Just want to say hello.
  4. Been awhile since I was here last but I just pulled my 1990 VR out of the corner and brushed the dust off! Naturally I had to give the carbs a good going through. She is running sooooo pretty now! The air ride E4 glitch was back but a little cleaning of the connector pins made the air pump clammer back to life. I have a tiny oil leak at the staor cover gasket from a previous fix but thats easy stuff. I am wondering about interchangeability of body doo dads on the xvs12 and 13 such as the windshield, radiator cover, and front turn signals. I have a right signal lens that is cracked and my rad cover has a crack as well. She is a nice old girl and I would like to keep her thataway. Anyhoo glad to have her back on the road I forgot what a comfy bike it is to ride! Dave
  5. 84 XVZ 1200, 38K MILES Bike is running rough and I thought it was because I got something wet from a good washing. This is what I've done based on what you good people have advised. Pulled and cleaned plugs, replaced plug wires, ensured spark off each coil and each wire down to the boots, pulled the ignition box-opened it and baked it in the oven @ 150 for 1.5 hours, opened the stop switch on the handle bars-hosed it w/ wd-40 and blew it out with the compresser. She fires up immediately and at idle, she sounds like she is purring. She appears to be firing on all 4 cylinders but depending on the amount of throttle that I give it, the carbs all pop, some more than others and it is certainly not ruuning like it should. If I hammer the throttle, she chokes out. Again, I thought I got something wet but maybe the washing and running like crap is just coincidence. Could the coils or the ignition box be screwed up even though it is running? I really dont think it is a fuel issue because I've run (my most recent ) 3/4 of a tank of gas through it and ran like a champ. I've got a bit over 3k miles on it this years since the snow melted. The fact that each carb pops when I accelerate leads me to believe it is something electrical but I'm certainly not a bike machanic. Looking for more trouble shooting ideas. Thanks everyone John-Michigan jkmorey@localnet.com
  6. Stuck in traffic today going to work. Some idiot decided to park upsdie down on the interstate. anyhow, bike stalled 3 or 4 times while idling. Started right back up, but it was like some one just turned off the key. As long ans I held the throttle crakced a little or pulled the choke a hair, it was fine. Is it just running too lean? Any over heat or lack of good cool intake air issue? Thanks
  7. Well here it is in a nutshell. The bike seems to be down on power and mpg. Thought at first I dropped a cylinder. Nope firing on all four. Was able to get into for a little yesterday. I checked spark on all plugs, idle dropped with every wire I pulled. Pulled the airbox and watched down the carbs as I revved it up, appears to have good fuel flow, maybe to much? If I was to get on it today I would just think it was normal and never work on it but knowing how much power is really has and what it is putting out now I think there is a problem. Any ideas? Shaun
  8. I pulled my K&N filters off tonight after realizing they hadn't been pulled to be cleaned in say (cough cough) 20 or 30,000 miles.. ouch.. But looking at them.. I'm wondering if it was just the right time or premature or waaaay too late, hard to tell.. As the air comes into the box, it seems only the immediate area in front of the inlet hole is dirty while the rest of the filter looks pristine.. SO clean it's still fresh pink with oil.. SO weird. It might not show well in the photo but just that small area has dirt on it (albeit a lot) but the rest of the filter is looking darn new.. How often do you clean YOUR K&N? Cheers
  9. A farmer and his brand new bride were riding home from the chapel in a wagon pulled by a team of horses, when the older horse stumbled. The farmer said, "That's once." A little further along, the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer said, "That's twice." After a little, while the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer didn't say... anything, but reached under the seat, pulled out a shotgun and shot the horse. His brand new bride raised all kind of hell with him, telling him, "That was an awful thing to do." The farmer said, "That's once."
  10. Didn't see any other posts similar to my issue, so here it goes. Long story short, last summer moved the bike to new place. Garage was cluttered, so it sat outside for 2 days. Rain on one of them. After that, the bike would idle, but as soon as you tried to give it gas, it would act as if it were limited at 1500 rpm. When that happens, the tach drops to zero. Let off the gas, tach comes back. Didn't have time to ride last year so I left it. Well it still does it. Pulled the battery out and looked at the connects on the TCI and they are dry and not excessively dirty or corroded. New plugs and there seems to be spark on all 4 although the two rear plugs I pulled out were wet. Any suggestions ? I have the shop manual and it basically says to check the resistance on the coils and if that's not it, replace the TCI. I'm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It's nice today and I'd really like to ride again. Please help ! Phil
  11. I had a strange occurrence today that I thought was going to leave me stranded. I came up on a mobile construction stop light that I knew was very long so I turned off the bike to keep the heat down. It was close to 90 degrees out. I had just done this on the other direction and had made a ccouple other stops with no problems. When I thought the light was about to change I hit the starter and everything went out. I lost the instrument cluster and the starter wouldn't engage. The odd thing is that the power outlets that are wired direct to battery also went out. I pulled off to the side and tried wiggling wires etc. I also pulled the line fuze for the outlets. After several attempts and 10 minutes it came back to life and has been fine since. I'm afraid of this happening again. Any thoughts?
  12. Need advice before I do anything. I ride a 2006 RSV with 12k miles. 3rd owner. Getting ready to leave work today and I jumped on the bike to take off. Put the key and it won't turn. I had tge bike locked. Had to move it back and forth and pulled the key in and out and it finally turned. I did wash the bike last night but no hard water spray. Thoughts? Replace, WD40,
  13. http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn195/xxMPWATERDAWGxx/642463327_2297045414_0.jpg Picked this up yesterday. The guy used it as a tag a long, but it still has all the camper parts with it. I pulled it about 150 miles back home. First time pulling a trailer too, and it was a really good experience.
  14. Well, I had today off and thought I'd work more on the bike. It was a good day for me. I've got pics of my "firsts"... 1. Installed an extra power port in trunk. Plan to install another below passenger left leg but had to order the plug to get a water proof one. 2. Installed the round vents in my windshield. This was a bit nerve racking for me because I didn't want to ruin the windshield. It was actually pretty easy though and turned out nice. I have them a little more toward the center than some I've seen but some reviews I read said you don't get much air when they are more outside...took it for a spin and get a little bit of air...nothing too spectacular but enough help on 110 degree days. 3. Pulled the trailer. Finally got the trailer tagged and road ready. I've never pulled a trailer before with the RSV, so I took it out on the road for a little bit then came back and put the wife on to see how it rides 2up. All in all it did well. We road it around town for about 25 miles and took it on the highway. Pulled straight and no big issues. 4. Tested out our new Scala Rider Q2 Multiset bluetooth headsets on this ride. They worked pretty well. We sometimes had a hard time connecting via intercom but I think that's more our learning curve than the device. We also connected our phones to them and received phone calls while riding. Wife said she couldn't even tell I was on a motorcycle even though I was going about 55 at the time. All in all a great day. We are just about ready for our 2700 mile trip in June. Next step, load up the trailer and pull it around to ensure I'm comfortable with the extra weight.:cool10:
  15. In June I'll by crossing into Canada with a friend. I have crossed before on bikes but that was well before 9/11. Back then we just pulled up to the customs booth together. Can we still do that or do they want one bike at a time?
  16. Pulled the 96 out of the shed today, it's been there since late October. NO fluids whatsoever in the resevoir. Added Dot 3, bled, added, bled added, no pressure at all in the clutch. No noticeable leaks anywhere. Pulled the side cover, pulled off the "slave cylinder" and had a heck of time to get it to move. Finally freed it up. Pulled it apart, can feel a ridge inside about 10 thou....have it all apart still. Comments? New slave cylinder required? Best place to buy? What a spot to get at! Sure glad my son can wrench, and more importantly...SEE! This getting old crap...and owning two bikes is a wee bit challenging at times. Thanks gunk:shock3:
  17. Took a break from everything today, kinda. Got my Silverwing out and had some fun. Put 230 miles on her and used 4 gallons of gas. What a blast. Hooked up with some other riders out just cruising around for a while and overall had a good day. Also got to check my brakes out real good when a truck pulled out in front of me, but kinda predicted it so I was ready. All in all it was a great day.I am certian that if it had been the Venture it would have been a longer ride though. Just had to share. Shaun
  18. I've got 34000 miles on my 2004 midnight and I just noticed a new noise coming from the left side of the engine when at idle. Almost like a scraping or squeaking a few times a second but lessens when the clutch is pulled in or in neutral. Could it be the clutch wearing out or maybe just needs adjustment? When switching from neutral into first it grabs a little but always has. Any ideas? Thanks.
  19. Well, I went to put the bike away for the winter and learned a few things. Last year when I owned the vstar I pulled the seat to hook up the tender and found that I had no battery. Today I pulled the side cover off thinking I was so smart and found fuses. I than pulled the other cover off and found the over flow for the coolant. It was now time to read the manual and discovered that I needed to pull the seat off. Well, since I had the owners manual out I thought that I would look into why the radio or Ipod keeps going in and out. Well most of you probably know by now that the CB radio was on causing the music to go in and out. Oh well, lesson learned; can't wait for spring!
  20. Quickstep cracked the fairing for me and removed cassette deck. So pulled said player out, and I lined the outer casing bingo, storage container:thumbsup2:
  21. I was coming home from work tonight on the freeway, when all of a sudden it was like I put my foot on the brakes. I started to slow even with more throttle. I got off the exit and stopped at a light. Pulled over and looked all the way around the bike in the semi-darkness of a gas station. It had smoke coming from underneath but no oil or anything. definite burning rubber smell but I couldn't see anything stuck somewhere. started it back up and it revved fine. pulled out and it ran just like normal. when I got home I shined a flashlight all the way around and can't find anything. 86 Venture with 28,000 miles. I replaced the brakes and tires about 1500 miles ago. Rear end was lubed about 5,000 miles ago and the oil changed last month. I wonder about a dragging rear brake, but the peddle felt fine and I pushed down hard on both front and rears before stopping. Anyone ever have this problem? I worried I might be melting a clutch but I would think that it wouldn't go away like that
  22. pick

    Lowers

Long story short, last week I had to take a furlough, so wife and I headed south for a week of r&r in Fl. About 40 mles south of Warner Robbins, Ga. in the dark, 80mph, hit something? Not sure what it was? Desk? Drawer? Some kind of piece of furniture. Anyways, got the bike pulled over to check for damages. Broke both lowers, brake lines, radiator and all look ok, but am gonna have to replace the cowlings, bent the crash bars, but they can be straightened. Any one got any good deals on lowers for an 01 RSV?
  23. I hate admitting to this but I need to get it fixed so here goes. Back this early summer I finally got a chance to get out and ride for three days. Weather forecast was good and I was pumped. I had been working so many hours and neglecting the bike that NOTHING was going to stand in my way of this ride. Well, I pulled the bike out the day before to wash it and get it packed. Turns out the battery was dead and it appeared it may be a battery tender issue. I jumped it and drove it for 30 minutes and it seemed to be fine. Got up the next morning and had to jump it and it started right up. Every time I tried to put it in gear it would die on me. After jumping it 3 times and it dying all 3 times I'm afraid to say I punched the gas tank. Just below the gas cap. Well my big mitts put a good dent in the tank and I can see some slight cracks in the paint. Needless to say I was ready to punch myself after this. I guess what I'm looking for can this dent be pulled out without going to a professional using a dent puller or am I pretty much screwed needing a professional? And yes, I did learn a lesson. Punch the wife next time instead. J/K.
  24. Coming North on US 19 approaching St Petersburg on the morning of the 16th I saw a Silver (08?) at the Last Rest Stop towards St Petersburg at about 10:40 AM. I waved at him as he got on and left couldn't get there before he pulled out. Anyone from here??
  25. We stopped in Sheridan Wy to do a little shopping and pick up some groceries and gas for the space shuttle. I was just coming up to the intersection to get back on the I-90 and a guy pulls out of gas station with a boat on a trailer and lucky for him it was me he cut off. Just as he pulled out I put my foot on the brakes and I see something fall from his vehicle. It was his wallet, full of cash, credit cards and ID. I stopped right on top of it and Mary went out and gathered up as much as she could without getting run over. She is sure she didn't get all the cash. By now the guy is booting it up the on ramp and way out ahead. No chance to catch him with the shuttle, even with the Ultra Power upgrade. So what should I do? By the time I got on the hwy. he was out of sight. I pulled over at the first opportunity and went thought the wallet looking for a phone number and all I found was a personal check with a phone number but the last two digits couldn't be read. There was a business card for a county parole officer (don't jump to conclusions) so I called the number but the women didn't work there any more. The guy I talked to did some digging and came up with a cell number. I tried it, no answer, but the recorded message was by the guy so I left a message with my cell number. Haven't heard anything yet but we're at Devils Tower tonight and there's no cell reception. If I don't hear anything tomorrow I guess I'll just pack it all in an envelope and ship it back to him. My dilemma is that I have no idea how much money might have blown away and I don't want him thinking I stoled it. We found one, hundred dollar bill but who knows how many there were? I was in the middle of the road holding up traffic and wasn't too worried about a few that got away.
