  1. I just purchased a 2005 RTSD with a little over 7,000 miles for $6,000 which I am hoping was a decent deal. But any ways I test drove it and it never showed the first sign of a problem. But on my way home it started cutting out when accelerating and popping on deceleration. Well at the end of my 200 mile trip home the bike was cutting out pretty bad pretty much through about 70% of the rev band and popping any time I stared to decelerate. I know the bike has been siting for about 7-8 weeks and not sure if that would have anything to do with it or at least to that extent. (Oh, and the bike has a pair of BUB's on it if that may be contibuting to the problem). My last bike was fuel inj. so I never had any of these problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks: Tim

    Bikes Blues and BBQ 2011

Hmmm...noticed a slightly different menu for posting a new thread. Cool. Hey whos going to the rally in Fayetteville? I'm pretty sure I'm going, barring anything unforeseen at this point. http://www.bikesbluesandbbq.org
  3. We are taking off tomorrow for a 9 day getaway, having new avons put on this am. 18K out of the last set, not too bad. We are spending the 1st nite in Natural Bridge Va, next nite in Black Mtn. then 2 nites at Mt Pisgah. Then a nite at the Biltmore Inn, next nite in Blowing Rock, then wind our way back up the Parkway. Looks like the weather is gonna be pretty good, any recommendations on neat things to see along the way is appreciated. If ya see a shiney 06 out there stop me I will buy the coffee. Craig
  4. Ok, I'm gonna start chasing people. My daughter called me a week or so ago and asked me where I was going in such a hurry. Seems she had been following "my" bike on I-80 and was trying to catch up. Didn't happen. Thing was I was in the rack at the time but but walked out to the garage just to make sure. Nope....not mine. So in the last few days I have seen a nice Blonde MKII 4 times in Council Bluffs and Omaha ALWAYS going the other way either on the Interstate or a road I couldn't do a quick turn around on. Three time solo and the other day two up westbound on "L" street. So.... Bill W., was it you? I can't remember if your's was a Blonde or not. If not, I'm gonna snag us a new member pretty soon. 1st gens are pretty thin around here and ones in nice shape are even thinner. There is one I see quite a bit and it looks like he's added more duct tape every time I see it. Pretty soon it's going to be "that gray Venture". Anybody we know? Mike
  5. I have the royal start tour clasic which has the 4 exhaust pipes. I have been pndering trying to chage them out for the 2 pipes. one on each side. The reason I have been thinking about this is that my bags are pretty small in comparisson and would like to get larger hard bags. Any IDEARRRRRS!!!
  6. I just got off the phone with Tom. He called me to let us know what was going on. First his health. He has 9 broken ribs, collapsed lung (fixed now) Laserated liver, lots of road rash on back, arms and shoulders, also road rash on his helmet. Good thing for the helmet. At this point no surguries needed. He is very sore and on lots of pain killers. He sounded pretty good considering everything. Now for what happened. He was headed south on Hwy 441 when a 93 year old women ran a red light and hit the front of his bike. This caused him to loose contol and pulling the trailer the bike and trailer jackknifed throwing him off the bike which sent him sliding down the road.. He is now out of ICU and like I said sounds in pretty good spirits considering everything. His biggest concern is how to get to his bike and get his belongings after he gets out of the hospital. I will call him later today or maybe tomorrow and remind him that the accident wasn't his fault and that the womens insurance needs to pick up all the costs and rent him a car and such. I am unemployed right now and if I can figure out the money side of it I might ride down and see if I can help him with everything that needs done. Anyway thought everyone would like to know what was going on. Here is his number if anyone wants to call and lift his spirits. 772-260-5431. I will update you when I get more info.
  7. I got the lower steering bearing pressed on, and the bearing races in. I can start putting everything back together again. Obviously I have to pack the bearings...but other than that is there ANYTHING I should be aware of or is it pretty much just do the reverse of what I did to take it apart?
  8. http://www.ledglow.com/index/ They look pretty easy to install. Everything is plug and play.
  9. Heya, New to the site and "kinda" new to the Venture... to the point, I have had this bike for about 5 mos now and am about to replace the rt. fork seal for the 3rd (that's right) 3rd time! I have had the fork out and on the bench at the shop twice to look for anything that could be causing this issue. No scratches (beyond normal wear), rock chips, gouges, etc. etc. This fork had been gotten into before I bought it and a little messed up on reassembly, in as much as they put that little aluminum sleeve w/ the collar on the metering tube inside the fork back in upside down. It was jammed on there pretty hard so I got it off and cleaned it up w/ some emery and polished it with a dremmel best I could. Functionality seems pretty good other than this darn seal. There were these two brass colored rings (I would call them bushings for lack of an automotive equivalent) that looked a bit worn but still reassembled nicely snug. That is about all I can think of as far as info/history on this... please tell me someone has encountered this problem or similar, this little repair is getting annoying... I want to ride w/o the worry of this seal just puking all over the brake caliper. Thanks in advance for ANY suggestions! Oh yea... '86 VR / XVZ1300, 87K miles Side note... I read a post that said the oil should only be half way up the sight glass, is this accurate? Another suggested using 15W-40 for my climate here in CO. is that accurate? I'm thinking I have some reading and serious part shopping to do here! LOL
  10. Well he did it, Rob (formerly aamcotrans) just bought himself a '99 Valkyrie Interstate, and it's a pretty sweet ride. Here's a few pics of the new bike.
  11. Myself and Kevin (Kevinfalk on VR) headed out on Sunday for a nice approx. 800 km ride. From Stettler down through the Kananaskis and back. About 45 mins from home a deer flew out of the ditch and hit Kevin causing him to crash. I guess I paniced and grabbed to much brake to try and avoid everything and laid mine down also. Both of us faired pretty good, Kevin ended up with a broken ankle and a really sore shoulder. His bike not so good, the only thing not damaged is his new Russel Daylong seat. Myself, I ended up with road rash on my elbows, knees and hip. Bike got chewed up on the leftside pretty bad. Thank God for leathers is all I can say, they did a stand up job keeping the asphault from eating at my skin. My question though, does anyone have any tips on dealing with insurance . I know every state and province is different but anything might help. I just always get the feeling they're going to put the boots to ya in the end. Conrad
  12. Hello....I didn't know where to post these couple of Questions....so I chose here. I am thinking Of selling my '86 Kaw Vulcan 750 and purchasing a 99 - '04 RSV..... I love the Smoothness and reliability of the V-4 engine.....but I hate carbs.....so what kind of issues or problems have you folks had with your carbs. Are they pretty reliable? Do they stay in sync pretty well? Are parts for Mikuni 32's easy to get parts for? What about lowering options....The seat height is a little high for me....I am 5' 6". What other problem areas are there with the RSV. I am going to purchase one of these bikes next April. Thank you for any info that you may have for me.
  13. Is there a non-air replacement possibility for the rear shock? My load is pretty consistent and don't neccessarily need the flexability of air. I change over to progressive shocks when I had a kawasaki voyager and was pretty happy with it. Sooo I was wondering if anyone has ever checked out a non-air replacement for our ventures. 2nd gen of course. The rears are showing some bad signs and I think it is getting close to replacement time. Thanks. Bill
  14. Well guys, I just got my new Rivco hitch installed on the Wing, along with a Rivco rack. Pretty slick. Installs not too bad, good instructions, and the thing is rock solid. The rack will work great for carrying a small cooler (or an additional bag for luggage if we need it. Great product. I'm very pleased with it! I'd been looking at the Packit Rack, which is pretty cool, but the Rivco setup does the same thing, is more solid and gives the "option" for hauling a trailer if I ever decide I need it.
  15. I found this article and it's a pretty good read. Looks like our old Venture faired pretty well. http://www.ridermagazine.com/output.cfm?id=2226349
  16. I notice there are several flying fans on this site and thought I'd let you all know that the museum has updated its WEB site. It is now a "walking tour" and pretty realistic. http://www.nmusafvirtualtour.com/full/tour-pkg.html
  17. Ran across this on craigslist for $3750. I am not in the market for one and have no idea on point of cost but looks pretty good. http://www.austrackcampers.com
  18. I have one of the Venture Rider belt buckles and have been asked who made them. Can't remember who was taking those orders but since it's been a while, as well as before the last sites crash I think, I can't find a reference for them. I'm pretty sure it was someone in Texas but could be wrong there. Time for another group buy? Info anyone? Larry
  19. Title pretty much says it all. I've sent a few private messages, but have been unable to tell if they were sent since they don't show up in my SENT messages folder. Am I missing something? (Other than the messages that is )
  20. I'm thinking pretty hard about putting different handlebars on the RSV, but Venture specific bars are pretty limited in selection. Doesn't some of the bars from Harley's fit our bikes? If so, which models (I think someone mentioned Road Glide in another thread)? Figured since so many more accessories are available for Harleys, it might make bars easier to find if I search for them instead of Venture bars.
  21. A stock handlebar riser for a 2nd Gen? I decided to remove the 2" risers on mine because the throttle cables were binding and the threads on one of the stock risers is pretty well stripped. I'll be happy to pay. I've checked ebay, but would rather buy from someone here if they have them. Thanks!
  22. Ok well I got into the rear of my 83. Everything looked pretty good. Had a buddy blast off the paint around the welds and no cracks. One weird part was when I took the covers off the swing-arm there were grease zerts there, thought in 83 they did not have them. The crossmember that the shock mounts to is very heavy with gussets in place, has it already been modified and strengthened? Another question is how much grease do you need to pump into the drive shaft grease zert? Everything looked really good so I will be putting it back together pretty much as is and just putting new bearings in the rear wheel. I will also have the rear rebalanced. Shaun
  23. You may have seen my post: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=59272&highlight=trailer about getting my trailer out for the first time. Do I need to add air to my rear shocks? I'll be riding 2up but we only weight about 280 together. I don't know how much air I have in there now but I think it's pretty much zero.... Thanks!
  24. Drove up to Omaha today to go helmet shopping. Didn't find a helmet but did get to look at what the dealer had for Ventures. I was glad we looked. We paid 10,900 for the 2008 with under 1100 miles one it. They had a 2007 with 24k for 13,699!?!?! Two others for around the same price. I think we got a pretty damn good deal! They also had a 2011...damn that was a bright and pretty blue! I like the Venture a lot but damn if I wouldn't have taken the 2011 Vmax home in a heartbeat. Frank
  25. So how are the various OEM's doing sales wise this year, you ask? Here's a 2011 vs. 2010 comparison in unit retail sales for the first quarter. Suzuki is seeing a substantial gain over last year now that they are shipping product again, but HD still leads overall in unit sales. Pretty interesting numbers nonetheless.....
