  1. So I'm going to install 4 new Polk DB401 speakers should I and can I add a power amp to make them sound better?
  2. Spent last evening in the garage installing the wiring for my newly acquired heated jacket liner, gloves, and dual portable remote on my VR and Ultra. If you saw an earlier post which I asked for input from all the heated gear users here, I ordered from http://www.warmnsafe.com/ I rechecked my connections this morning and went for a little ride towards Altoona, PA. ended up a 107 mile round trip on the Ultra. The air temp was 43 degrees as measured by the gauge in my fairing. At 70mph on RT99/220 I was chilled, turned on the jacket liner to full power and within several minutes I was too hot. Turned the knob slowly to 1/8 power and results perfect , with my feet out on the highway pegs, I was comfortable. The gloves at 43 degree where to warm when powered on even with the adjustment knob at the lowest setting. So they should be perfect when the temp drops some. The great part no bulky clothing. I was wearing a long sleeve t-shirt, heated liner, and leather jacket, chaps, 3/4 helmet with shield up. My riding season has just been extended! Now to take out the VR and see how the charging system handles the added electrical drain. Looking back, I should have made this purchase years ago....thanks again for the responses Regards Dave
  3. Once again I have the reoccuring problem of the starter draggin. Now it's dragging so bad that it won't turn the engine over. sometimes it will catch and crank mostly it just sounds like it doesn't have enough power to turn the engine over. As indicated this is an reoccurring problem I went through this several months ago and thought I had it fixed by replaceing the bad under warrenty Odyssee battery. It worked great for a while then started acting up again and got progressively worse until now it just won't hardly crank. I've jumped out from hot battery to power lug on starter and it is doing the same thing. I've removed the starter and have taken it apart and cleaned it up and reinstalled. No Help. The battery wires have all been upgraded and have also added a second ground from engine ground point to frame. All the ground points are in good shape. I'm at the end of my rope. Does anyone have any suggestions.
  4. Hey guys, got a question for ya? I've put an XM radio (mount on master cylinder) and power it from the cigarette lighter. I also have a Garmin GPS on a ram mount on the other side right above the stock radio. My question: I'm using the power outlet for the XM, but am having to use the internal battery for the GPS. Does anyone know of a "duplex" device that will FIT into the stock power port and allow me to use 12V power for both? The adapter's I've tried will NOT clear the tank when the bars are turned. Ideas?
  5. I now have power. Thanks to Riderduke. David got here this afternoon and we headed out to get the parts needed and eat. Had one set back when one of the circuit breakers evidently was broken. Headed back out to get a replacement, but before we did we found the original reason that this happened. It was the outlet in the bathroom. So David switched that out too and miraculously we have power. Who know one little switch would cause so much trouble. I can't thank David enough for coming to help me out. As well as all those who also offered help from driving here to being there for us if we needed someone to ask questions of. So I have power and a nice new circuit breaker box. He hasn't gotten any DQ though, but he has eaten dinner and lunch so far and I'm taking him to breakfast in the morning. Margaret
  6. I just purchased my 09 RSV last month and as the temps turn somewhat cooler I am looking at installing my Gerbings. I have the pack that connects to the battery and controlls two inputs with adjustable knobs. Does anyone know off the bat if the 09 RSV will support that much power useage (ie jacket liner, gloves and pants)? I have no passing lamos or anything installed, would perhaps plug my ipod / gps in the accy. plug, I know I could add up all the watts but was hoping someone already knew?! From the Gerbings Website the following watts are used, I would assume when the item is on at full power: Jacket 77 Watts Pants 44 Watts Gloves 22 Watts
  7. I've read here that the hole behind the driver seat is the perfect size for a cigarette type power outlet, however, in looking at the powerlet brand, it needs a 1.125" hole & I measured the "perfect size" as .875". What brand will fit this hole without modification? Well, 1 more question: I'm not very good with modifying electrical stuff, so, how exactly do you modify the white plug near the battery that I've read about to work with a power outlet? And is it already fused? Thanks.
  8. Hey guys, Blonde has a hick up. She cuts off right after I start her up in the morning when I put her in gear. The kick stand indicator is not on the display which whenever she has trash in the switch the indicator would show the stand down even when it was not. After a few minutes of idle and picking around she will suddenly go in gear and work fine. Now once I get her on the road she might for a split second or two have a complete power loss but then be fine the rest of the ride. Any ideas what it may be? She just started this last week but seems to be getting worse. At first it was just a hick-up power loss for a fraction of a second and then ran fine. Im pulling what few hairs are left on my head out. Any ideas? She is a 1987 Venture Royale. Thanks
  9. Given the various electrical problems I have encountered on my bike, now I have one at home. Last night I was watching the race about 10:15 and all of a sudden it sounded like a train was coming thru the house for a couple of seconds and then the power went out. I went down to the basement to strong electrical smoke smell. The front panel on the breaker box was very hot. I took the panel off and the left buss bar where the main breakers were located was missing and the bottom of the box had molten aluminum running out of it. It had evidently exploded. I walked outside and even the garage 75 feet away and my street light was dark. We are the last one on the line with our own transformer and it had popped the fuse on the transformer. Then, to make things worse, I went out to the garage to get my big LED flashlight, I had to go in the side door, which I seldom use and when coming out, I stepped on a piece of plywood that had a nail sticking up where there had been some roof repair where a big tree limb went thru it a few weeks ago. Now, with new priorities, Laura and I took off the VA emergency room to see when my last tetnus shot was done, which was three years ago. Since it was not hurting bad, I decided to just wash it good and put some antibotic ointment on it. So, when I awoke this morning, it was hurting and had some swelling, so back to the emergency room we went for an antibotic shot and a round of antibotic pills. This is more critical as I have been diabetic for many years. I ended up calling the Power Board, who came out and disconnected the power to the house and reset the transformer so I could have power to the garage. Then I was able to run a 100" cord to the house to plug the refrigerator back up. Now, to make this more frustrating, I took this week as vacation as I was planning to meet up with Big Daddy down in the Smokies, but right now, that ain't looking too good. I am currently at my son's house because I could not get my cable internet to come up. Of the the three TV's we have, only one would come on correctly with cable, so I don't know what I have there. And of course, all these checks is using the long cord from the garage. So, I am getting ready to go to my insurance carrier tomorrow and see what the options are. I have Farm Bureau and they were real good when lightening struck my heat pump last summer. Wish me luck folks. RandyA
  10. New guy here, just picked up my 2009 RSTD S today. Traded in my 2003 HD Electra Glide Classic for it. Road 100 miles so far and here is what I learned. Shaft drive is not as smooth. Forgot that. But it is reliable. The RSTD does vibrate some when applying power up hills and accelerating. Feels like it is coming from the rear /shaft. RSTD gearing is a little lower in fifth. That was a surprise. The RSTD stock seat is horrible. 1 hour and we were sore. Thought about the Butler mod but ordered a Mustang seat instead. Liked the one I had on the Harley a lot. The RSTD engine is very car-like compared to the chug - chug Harley V-twin. Very smooth and lots of power (which I did not sample much as I am in the break in period). The pipes are really quiet - that's a change. The RSTD seems to have a little more rake in the front end and turns a little different, but very nice and balanced. The shifting is considerably smoother than the Harley. The RSTD display is cool. I like it and it functions well. I always thought the Harley Guages were a little boring. The RSTD suspension is better. Smoother and takes bumps better. The hard cases are much nicer on the RSTD. The lids don't come off! The RSTD windshield is way higher, which I like because I am tall. The RSTD is a much tighter machine all around. The Harley is something of a bucket of bolts, even when running well and in good repair. I look forward to sharing more as I get used to this bike. I have already learned a lot from this site. Hope I don;'t get the chirp!
  11. I need some help! my power outlet has no power i do not know which fuse supplies the power , also need a wiring diagram of this outlet
  12. I canceled my XM subscription when I got my Zumo 550 and now just use the MP3 player. I finally got around to taking the mounts off the bike and out of my Jeep. I use to move it back and forth so I have a Roady XT, two mounts, two docking stations, two antennae, and two power cords. I also have the front brake mount and adapter washers and screws if anybody wants the whole set up. Cheapest I see them on E bay new is $65, plus shipping, with one power supply and one antenna.. I don't remember what I paid for the brake reservoir mount. I'll take $50 shipped , in the US, for everything.
  13. I have been stumped for about 1 week now. One sunny day I was riding home from work and my radio just cut out....no power to the tuner where the volume control is. After tracking down which fuse it was, I found that the 10 amp fuse behind the side cover...aka backup fuse, was blown. I figured it was probably an original fuse, changed it out and it worked fine for about 1 week. Then one day it blew shortly after starting, while idleing. So being suspicious I was careful to watch while I put in the new fuse. With the key in the off position I noticed the fuse was arcing while I inserted the fuse....wierd....tried to see if the radio worked by turning the key to acc position...worked fine....turned the key to the on position with the radio on and everything ok....hit the start button and lost radio power. All I can think is that the ignition switch is shorting out??? ANYONE EVER RUN INTO THIS? Please shoot me your ideas or experiances!!!! Thanks, Big Mike:think::think::think::think::think:
  14. Ever see something like this before? Does it actually work or is it more gimmick than anything else? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TUNING-Yamaha-Royal-Star-V-Max-Suzuki-Hayabusa-Intruder_W0QQitemZ140339503929QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item20ace2e339&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245
  15. I ran accross the following site today that has carb enhancement kits that it claims help overall power levels for us: Standard drop-in carb kit Adds more low-end / midrange, if the proper main jet is selected, more topend power. Easy to install and tune - no slide drilling! http://www.factorypro.com/ select Yamaha and scroll down to xvz13 Venture. They also say The needle jet orifice wears oblong in as little as 5,000 miles and is particularly aggravated by "in town", low rpm operation. The result is excessive richness at low rpm that can be partially compensated for by lowering the fuel level. which might help explain why the factory sets the carb floats to run lean? Just a thought. They sell a carb float level adjustment tool. attachment is the tool.
  16. Just wondering if there is an exsisting power plug somewhere on my 2007 Tour Deluxe. Wish it had the cigerett lighter type plug somewhere up front. (I saw one in JC-Whittney for around $18.00, chrome attaches to handle bars). I quess the Ventures probably have a plug on fairing, or should have. So I quess I will run the power for this from the extra power source that I read about from one of the Goose,s Tech post. I ordered a Garmin 750 ($179.00 including tax- Wallmart online) that operates from a cigerett type plug, that way I can also use it in the car/truck. I know there are more expensive GPS, but I went the poor man route. The ones made for bikes are 650 dollars to as much as 800 dollars, shewwwww.Any and all help from youall is appreciated, thank you in advance. James Oops, I just relised that I posted in venture tech SORRY.
  17. Today I took a 415 mile solo run from my home (Long Island) to Mt Greylock (highest peak in Ma). This was my first "off Island" run since picking up the Venture a few months ago. I dont get too many of these opps so im all sorts of jacked up to report on it! Amazing, just amazing. I took plenty of long runs over many years on my 1100 Vstar but this run was so much better. The Venture made the difference. It was smooth, quiet and powerful every time I tested it. Power, Power and more Power. I wouldn't have imagined tossing a monster like this around on the twisties but it works!; not like my lighter Vstar but it still gives a thrill. Never felt like I was going to lose it and the brakes stop it and my carcass with ease. I could ride in that stock seat forever (first time I didnt need to drop half a grand on a Corbin) and with the Kuryakyn pegs out there I had many riding positions to test. Again, just amazing. I only wish I had more opportunity to get it on the open roads. (after 20 years of riding on Long Island, Ive seen it all!) My aftermarket electronics worked flawlessly. Satellite radio kept me entertained. I downloaded a Garmin map file from Sundaymornignrides.com, made a few mods and it worked perfectly! (Garmin 2720, they are cheap and work great!) Here's a couple of pics from the run. More on the link below. Ive gotten plently of tips here and thank everyone. Great site. Im on here multiple times per day. Long Island members need to get together some day! http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SnT6Z1LmziI/AAAAAAAAC1c/tH30-y1NhLU/s800/P8010625.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SnT6M0g1mcI/AAAAAAAACzw/B1OWgDcTeeE/s800/P8010598.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SnT6ue99zyI/AAAAAAAAC4k/3Jr2erseitM/s800/P8010672.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SnT6O8SH4GI/AAAAAAAAC0A/UDTaYil4_b0/s800/P8010602.JPG http://picasaweb.google.com/ablumny/LongIslandMtGreylockRun#
  18. i just installed six led lights on my saddle bags . lights have 3 led bulbs in each light. i will hook up to the running light wire off bake light. leds will be used as running lights not brake. do you see a problem here as far as having enough power to do so? thanks
  19. Hey guys. A few years ago I switched to LEDs to save some power and changed the flasher relays so I could get some power freed up. Well over the winter I upgraded the stator so the power problems are gone. With that I now find that I want my automatic canceler back working so Im gonna put the original relays back in the bike. I now need to install load equalizers. Problem is where should I put them? Do I need 2, one for the front and one for the back and which one should I get? Help me out here so I can get rid of my grandpa flasher syndrome!!! LOL
  20. I have a 99 2nd generation and about a month ago I was riding in some of the hills of West Va and it almost felt like the power was not up to par. Then I convinced myself, yep it's fine. Then I noticed one other time that going up a hill it just seemed down on power since I had to roll the throttle all the way up and it was slowly picking speed. I'm thinking, was the hill steeper than I thought. Once again I convinced myself after a few miles all was good. Mileage is still the same so no change there. Last week I ran it up to about 95 on the interstate with no problems. Yesterday the wife and I went for a ride about a 130 miles in the ride I noticed it felt like it was running out of gas and it was about due so I switched to reserve. Stop at the next exit and as I was taking off from the stop sign it felt like there was not enough fuel going to the carb's. Like I was trying to take off in second. I fueled up and switched back to normal. As we got back on the interstate I noticed it did not have the power that it should. No doubt about it this time. It was not missing and appeared and felt like all cylinders were firing. Up and over a mountain on the interstate in slowed down to about 55 mph and that's all she would do. On that mountain I would normally be at 70 or better going over the top with more throttle. I headed back to the house and figured when I got home, first thing to try was see how much gas was coming through the line and see if the fuel pump was running. For the 100 or so miles home the bike ran fine just did not have the power. It did backfire through the exhaust as I slowed down at several stop signs and I was figuring it was not getting the proper fuel. About 5 miles before the house my wife said it's running better isn't it. Yep, sure is. Get home and all is good. Ran it through the gears and no problems. Not sure where to start since no lights or anything. Now the bike is fine until it happens again. Question, has anyone had this happen before? If the pump was to quit working any idea what systoms you would get? Would it quit all together or would gravity give enough fuel to make it run and act like low power. As usual, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Spotsy
  21. How many switched 12v wires are available in the fairing that can be used for power for a light relay? What color are they ?
  22. Where is a good place to buy the Hoppy power converter? I don't have a pep Boys where I live. Is it easy to wire up on a RSTD?. Jim Bell A computer once beat me in chess, but it didn't survive kick boxing.
  23. (Any Idea's ) After my conversion, the first few weeks my top end power was there, I now have over 1500 miles on since then and loving every minute of it, I will never go back! , but what has happened or is it my Imagination? If I kick it into 5th gear I lose my top-end power range. I have changed plugs / air filters etc. still the same. I know that I now have an extra 300 pounds but As I get up into the higher range or up a hill I can not seem to go over 65 mph , it is like horse power is maxed out . In the lower gears ( 1/2/3 and a bit of 4th) I can get the RPM's up really high. any idea's? or am I just getting old? *lol* On Another note: when we had 2 wheels and pulled our trailer I was pulling 300 more pounds and all was OK, and a passenger. Jeff
  24. I just ordered a Quadzilla fairing. I was wondering if it is installed so that the power to the fairing is off when the key is turned off?
