  1. Its my understanding that the 1st gen is rather limited in electrical capacity. Is there a way to improve this? I guess a new stator with slighty more power but dont you run into destroying your wiring. Is there another way to get upgraded power to other items heated seats grips etc. Like a transformer or something with its own wiring system? I dont know much about electricity so I'm sending out the challange to those out of the box thinkers that do.
  2. I was wondering if people could post pics of how they mounted their GPS's. I have the RAM-Mount set up that uses a u-bolt on the handlebar. I have not installed it yet and was curious as to what others had done to see if anyone had a better set up than what I am planning on doing. My other question is where to get power. My original plan was to power it from the connector near the battery. But I seem to remember there being another connector under the cover where the key is. I am at work and the bike is home so I can't look. I have to take that cover off to remove the tank etc. But if there is a plug there it would make things easier. One more question is for people with the Zumo 660. On my last bike I ended up clipping all the data wires and just using the power on the cradle. This simplifies the wiring harness. Not sure what the usb is for in any case. Has anyone else done this? I use an iPod for music so don't necessarily need all the bells and whistles the zumo has.
  3. My bike was missing the antenna for the radio, I don't have a garage for my bike, it gets covered with a nice cover, I needed an antenna, here is what I did. I went to autozone and bought a power boosted flat antenna, its designed for use on a windshield or the side of a boat, its self adhesive in three places, its held on through some pretty good temps so far this summer and works amazingly well. I utilized the right saddle bag as the location for the antenna.I located it on the door at its widest point. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/Touched1/PICT0004.jpg I drilled a 1/2 inch hole at the back ledge of the bag to run the power wire and the antenna cable through. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/Touched1/PICT0005.jpg I utilized the back of the lock as a ground. Installed the switch with the others, you may notice that the CB has been taken off the bike and new left cover has been fabricated to hold the class and cover the overflow. The red switch is for the radio antenna booster the other switches are running lights and rear light bar lights. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/Touched1/PICT0001.jpg It took me about and hour, cost 25.00 and I now have a great radio signal just about everywhere I go, no problem with garaging my bike under a cover. and a nice clean looking view to the back of my ride. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c177/Touched1/PICT0010.jpg
  4. I re soldiered the connections on the circuit board for the class system errors I was getting, re installed the unit hooked up the battery turned the key to acc, the controller came on no errors showing sounds great so far but read on , switched it to manual and pushed increase, all the power on the bike went away except to the controller? I have no power to anything else. what the heck happened? I checked all the fuses, the main fuse looks ok through the window but it could be bad where I can't see it at.
  5. Well then, I spent the day trying out two new "hidden antennas" and end result is that I shall keep my Firestiks on the bike.. The final verdict for me, is that the hidden antenna is a good concept, but its not an improvement over the bike system. Both hidden antennas I tried were amplified, which means you have to run a power lead to the bike system to power it up. No matter where I had positioned the antennas on the bike, (under fairing, inside trunk) or which orientation (up sideways etc) it was about the same result every time. The 36" fire sticks were able to grab more signal consistently better than the hidden antennas. However, if you're looking for a bike without sticks hanging out of the back of the bike, these are indeed a great alternative.. but as my ride buddy told me, a RSV without antennas just doesn't look right.. no matter what.. Interesting though... As per always "your mileage may vary" Cheers
  6. I would like to add a power supply (hard wired) off my 12 volt supply to run my 5th gen. Nano. Anybody have a clue. I have seed it on other RSV's but never asked the important questions.
  7. Last night at around 10:00pm there were some bad storms with heavy wind, hail, lightening, AND Tornadoes. There was a lot of damage. I know that we have some members out in the area hardest hit. There is no land phone service or power. At one point there were 48,000 without power. I sure hope everyone is OK. According to the weather dude on TV the super cell that spawned the tornado went directly over me and dissipated as it got closer to the lake. This was the closest that I have ever been to heading for the basement.
  8. I recently purchased an ’03 RSV. I noticed in shifting from 2nd to 3rd there is loss of power, as if, firing only of 3 cylinders. Is this a possible clutch problem, or what? It “takes off great in 1st and 2nd, but on 3rd is lack power. Suggestions appreciated.
  9. Have a 87 royal and am having some head light problems. The light will come on sometimes, and other times won't turn on. All i have done is check the light plug on the back of the head light. When it works, i have power, but when it doesn't work, i don't have any power. DUH. When the light works, i have high and low beams. Where do i start on this problem? Thanks Aaron
  10. The Hot Rod Power Tour starts tomorrow (Saturday) and begins in Newton, Iowa. It is estimated that we will have over 4,000 cars at the Iowa Speedway. There is no cost to view the cars! I think that's neat cause Goodguys are getting expensive. They pull out Sunday. If you are in Iowa it would make for a nice ride!!
  11. Went for a short ride last night and all of a sudden realized my Sirius radio wasn't working, yet it was fine on Saturday when we were out. Anyone have one of these....are they prone to crapping out all of a sudden? It's only a year old. I haven't delved into it yet so not sure if it's the radio or the power source or what. I run the power off the aux power supply in the fairing and that is working so it might be the power convertor itself ... drats!! now I'll have to split the fairing (again) to check it.
  12. Hi everyone. My wife and I pull a trailer when we go on our long trips. We camp most of the time and like to bring as much stuff as possible. I want to get a midsize, deep cycle battery to tote around in the trailer to power things around our campsite. I have a modest 350watt power inverter which is ample for what we need (we run mostly led xmas lights, phone chargers, small lcd TV, small laptop and a laser kaleidoscope. Also various 12v items. Not all at the same time). However, I don't like the idea of it running off the bike battery all night. Which leads me to my next question.. How could I rig it up to have the bike charging the external battery while we're riding? Is it as simple as just hooking it up in parallel with the main battery? Thanks everyone!
  13. We're having an issue with the 2002 Intrepid (2.7L V6) my daughter drives. Sometimes (and becoming more frequent) when accelerating from slow speed or stop there is a massive hesitation. The RPMs might rise a little bit but then acceleration stops and the tach stays steady. I can hear the intake noise from the open throttle plate but there is no power. No perceptible stumble, just no power. If the pedal is released the engine idles fine. After 15 seconds or so everything straightens out and it runs great. The service engine light seems to be non functional. The OBDII is showing five codes, four for the four oxygen sensor heater circuits and one for a multi cylinder misfire. I'm assuming the multi cylinder misfire is being set when we see the hesitation. My understanding is that the O2 heater circuits should not create a driveability issue. For those of you that have been around outboard boat motors: The engine sounds just like when you open the throttle butterflies on an outboard without pushing the linkage that works the spark advance. There is the BWAAAA of intake noise but little RPM increase and no power. I had similar behaviour with a Virago where the TCI was not advancing the timing. So I suspect the hesitation is being caused by a failing PCM not advancing the ignition timing. Of course the problem is intermittent enough there is little chance of verifying that with a timing light. Appreciate any feedback on my reasoning or alternative thoughts. Thanks.
  14. OK you guys that know the electrical of a first gen inside out. I am thinking about mounting an air tank and compressor in one of my saddle bags on a 1st gen. When running, the compressor will pull 16 Amps. It should never have to run for more than 2 minutes, typical run time is 30-45 seconds. I hope it will not need to run more than once a week, once the novelty wears off. Will the electrical system handle this? If not; I was thinking of installing a secondary battery with a SPDT relay so that the bike electrical system will never have to power the compressor. The extra battery would be connected to the com term of the relay and the compressor will be on the N.O. side with the bike power for charging on the N.C. side. The coil would be wired in series with the secondary battery and the pressure switch (through a relay) to refill the tank. The bike will still be able to charge the secondary battery when it is running, but the relay would isolate the compressor from the bike. The small 7Ah battery that I was going to use is plenty to refill the 1/2 gallon air tank 7 - 10 times before it needs a charge. My question is, how much extra load will be on the bikes electrical system while charging the battery? If charging the extra battery can/will end up pulling just as much power as the compressor then it makes no sense to add all of the extra complication. Does any of this make sense? Any other ideas of how to safely power the compressor without risk to the R/R or stator. This is most likely next winters project so I have a lot of time to work on the plan.
  15. I'm about to install my new passing lamps on my 06 R.S. Venture. Is it ok to pick up the power for the lamps off the power wire to the power outlet (cig lighter) the only thing I use the power outlet for is the GPS. The power outlet will already be fused and I'm wondering if I could eliminate the in line fuse to the lamps... then it would be much easier to get at if the fuse blows.... Terry
  16. got power back yesterday finaly got to get back on what a long 6 days snow no power etc. summer better come soon definatly reading to ride now bill:bang head:
  17. Ok for you electrical guys I have added a fuse block under my seat and I have a gps and sat radio on a ram mount on the resv mount and had run the cig plug power cord inside the fairing where I pulled the cig port out of the fairing and put a splitter in it. Now I have replaced the outlet in the fairing and am wondering if i can pull a power line from the block for it? how would i wire it together ? recommendations on fuse size? thanks guys
  18. ... the dust from your PC. Just a friendly reminder to everyone to check your PC’s (Personal Computer’s) for internal dust, especially around the cooling fans and power supply. I took my unit outside today, opened it up and took the air hose to it now it’s as clean as a whistle! Yes I know, it's hard to unplug from VentureRider.org but it will only take you a moment. Besides, if it hasn’t been done in a while it might just save yourself power supply problems down the road. If you don’t have a compressor with ‘dry air’ you can buy compressed air in a spray can. Don’t forget to unplug!
  19. I just talked to Buddy on the phone, as I am planning on going out there and buying his RSV later this month. He hasn't been online because he is still without power from the big ice storm they had. He bought a generator, and they are getting by. He said he has temporary power enough for the house, and the heating unit. He'll be back online as soon as they get their services restored. He still has his Wing for sale, and if anyone is interested, give him a call.
  20. Sure hope you all up north are ok after being hit with this last storm. I heard about those power outages on the news and from my brother up in NYC. Be safe!!
  21. 3 days plus with no power, luckily had propane heaters in mancave. Missed 2 days of work, electric company tells me we'll get someone out there to check it out. Well, since power line was yanked from my house above the mast I highly doubt them getting power to poles (which I might add we had numerous catch fire, blow up transformers like fireworks on the 4th of July etc...) is going to put power in my home. Had to chase down a crew working down the street from me to tell them it was pulled from house and not from power coming alone. All I can say is !!!!!Enough snow, Enough ice, Enough cold JUST ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!!
  22. Has any one put on different pipes & Put on a high flow air cleaners, mening throwing the air cleaners away & puting on a hihg flow unit. then jetting the carbs to match, With a dino & gas meter? Im not looking for more power, But more then 34 mpg. My o8 Venture has good power, But the mpg sucks! My thery is to give it more air & get rid of it with less restriction. Then set the carbs to match would help a lot. Just wondering if any one has did this & what the resolts were???????
  23. Just got my Zumo in the mail yesterday! Prior to buying the Zumo, I thought I read on this site that you could hook the motorcycle mount to the vehicle power cable and then plug it into the power source behind the faring. I can not find any place on the motorcycle mount to hook the vehicle power cable into. If this is note possible, what is the best way to hook the motorcycle power cable to power?
  24. Why do I have that feeling we will be using the generator alot this winter? We currently have 16,000 with no electric and I'm on generator. The winds should die down later tonight so maybe power company can get the tree's off the lines and line fuses reset.
  25. This one should get some really good responses! Last evening while attending the local chapter (SCRC) monthly meeting I was talking with another RSV owner about issues with his Venture(2008). Seems his fuel pump went out and left him stranded a few month's ago. I brought up the mystery power drain that my 2006 was having if it set in the garage for more than a week. He stated that he had the same problem with his wifes BMW and also his Venture on one occasion. He was told it was related to the concrete garage floor and walls. Had to do with amount of moisture in garage and the age old 'Do not store a battery on a concrete floor' as it will drain it. He was told to place a dehumidifier in his garage and te problem will go away. Well he did just that and says the problems is not near as bad as without one. He states the bikes can set for up to a month and still have cranking power. Is there anything to this theory?
