  1. I live in Greenwood and have just purchased a 2005 RSTD. It has the BUB slip ons. I have always had Honda bikes and are used to them. I disabled the AIS and it actually made the popping on decel worse. I dont know if I have a vacuum leak somewhere. I know this is a high revving bike, but this bike seems sluggish to me. I am mechanically inclined enough to get myself into trouble. I was just wondering if there was someone around my area that would be willing to look at my bike. If you had a carbtune that would be great also. I am not looking for a handout, I will pay you for your time, but anyone in the area knows there are not any good stealers. Thanks in advance. Zach... Also I was changing the plugs and there were the 7EA plugs in it as supposed to the 8EA. Is there a reason for running a hotter plug than what factory says to?
  2. I have read many post on tire plugs. some use the stop & go rubber plugs & some use the cord type with glue. Witch one is better? One of the post had that the rubber plugs leak air. I want to buy a kit for peace of mind that I can get home from out in no mans land. And do the Co2 cartridge's work? Have read some Co2 cans are empty& you lose a lot of air trying to use them. Eather a Co2 or Mini Compressor or Engine air pump. Witch would be the better choise? The stop & go kit looks like the easy way to go? No tire removel. I just want to put a kit together to carry incase it happens, so I can get home With out truble & not be at the mercy of some gowger to empty my walet out in the middle of no ware. Thank's for your input
  3. After the first 100 miles on my new '84 Venture, I spent time doing some initial maintenance on it today. Changed the oil and filter, final drive gear oil and the spark plugs. What a pain in the butt changing those 4 plugs. At first I thought I would check, clean, and regap the old ones, but I don't want to do that again for awhile, so I just replaced them. Trying to find the correct thinner walled socket, length of extension, and a smaller ratchet to fit in those tight quarters was fun. I used my shop vac to clean out any debris before pulling the plugs to be safe as I couldn't really see down there. I used a 3" piece of 3/4" clear hose in placing the new plugs, with a touch of oil on the threads, down in there and starting them without cross threading. Clear tubing allowed me to see if it was turning and it reduced the amount of "tiny" turns with my ratchet too. I put some seafoam in the gas tank and then went for a 40 mile ride with my wife in the balmy 55F weather. I noticed it ran a little better. With new tires, new brake pads front and rear, and clutch and brake fluid recently changed by PO, I hopefully won't be doing much else for the time being. At some point I will tackle the carb synch and valve adjustments as needed. My wife is now spoiled with the comfort of this bike!!
  4. Ok guys, I've searched and searched threads on this site and have gotten some good ideas (like setting the floats from V7Goose), but one thing I suspect and haven't been able to find any info on is testing procedures for the coils. The problem is after syncing the carbs my gas mileage went down and it still seems like the cylinders aren't all firing evenly. It's got new plugs in it (original NGK#) and all vacuum lines and plugs are good. I also run a can of Sea Foam regularly. Can anyone help with more suggestions?
  5. I'm putting new plugs in prior to riding tomorrow. With some valve cover seepage I have a little oil on the seats and the right rear plug has collected grime. How do I get this out?? Not being able to see in there, can I flush it with WD40 or straight gas?? Would it do harm if it disappears in the cylinder? Other options?? Thanks!
  6. Hi folks, So here's what happened, I never winterized my Gen 2 because I had plans to haul down south sometime this winter. Plus I got lazy and hunting and football and blah blah blah. So we finally got a little warmer weather last week and I started it up last week anyway bad gas plus I think I flooded it. So it wouldn't run very well and had smoke pouring out the pipes more on the left side than right. Yesterday I drained the tank and then added sea foam but it still ran poorly. Today I pulled the tank (huge accomplishment for me) and managed to pull the two rear plugs. They were both wet and pretty black, now how the heck do I get to the front ones? There is just a ton of stuff in on top of them. I can't figure it out. I did a search but just didn't happen find what I was looking for. Help me please!!!!!!!!!!!! Danimal
  7. Good morning all, I am having an issue with RPMs (I think). I was out riding around and everything seemed great and then I lost the "umph" from first gear. It acts like it wants to die at an idle and I basically have to wrap the throttle around just to get going at a normal pace. When it gets to just above 2000-2500 RPMs, it takes off and almost leaves me behind . So far, I have replaced the plugs and am running Seafoam in the gas and the oil. Can anyone point me in the direction of where I should go next? Thank you, Clay:bang head:
  8. a couple of the plugs are black and smell of fuel, bigtime this means she running rich, right? How do you lean it out a bit?1987 1300cc What do yall recommend?
  9. Just changed out the plugs in my 08 RSV with 9000 miles on them. The owner's manual says to change them at 8000 miles, but when I pulled the plugs out, they looked fine. I changed them anyway but was wondering why we are supposed to change them at 8000 miles? Electronic ignition and unleaded premium gas will get you about a 100,000 miles on on some car engines. Anyone have any ideas why we are supposed to change them at 8000 miles? Thanks, Glenn
  10. Ok, I installed a set of NGK Iridium plugs 18,000 miles back. Replaced them last week, just because---Here is photo of what the old ones look like if anybody is interested. Bike was still running good on this set.
  11. I have a 86 venture and the problem is I can't get spark returning to the spark plugs. Myself and Dokon have replaced the coils, plugs, the tips on the wire into the plugs, I think it is called the ignition coils ( what goes under the battery box that the coils plug into). We have tried everything it seems we get spark going on but coiming out we get nothing so the bike won't start. Took it to my bike mechanic and he again replaced the coils which I told him I already replaced. He told me that was the problem since no spark was coming down to the plugs. Well he fried the replaced ignitor box and I guess the circuit box in it. He is now stumped and said he doesn't know what it might be and I might have to use it as a part bike. Go figure I only have 100,000 miles on it so I am asking if anyone has had this problem I don't want to park my bike out I love it. He said they only other thing it might be is a bad short on the bike somewhere. Thx, Meatloaf:crying:
  12. I have 2006 with 5000 miles on it. I started it last week and it ran rough right away and would stall when I opened the throttle...ran a bit better when really warmed up. I never had this problem. It was supposedly synced when the dealer had it at 3000 miles. The bike did sit for about three weeks before I sterted it. I addes Seafoam at that point to the fuel. I also ordered a Carbtune Pro and was able to sync the carbs after the bike was very warm. The bike ran very good a couple of days ago. Yesterday the same crap again...choppy running. The only thing I can think of is I may have left the choak open while riding before it first ran choppy last week before I synced. Is it possible I fouled a plug leaving the choak open? Does it make sense the bike would run much better when really warmed up because the plug is firing a bit better even though it could be fouled? I really think the carbs are synced properly. Also, the socket that came with the bike to remove the plugs fits on the plug ,but I guess I need a special ratchet to fit on the long plug socket? Do I need to remove the large brackets on the front jugs to get to the front plugs? Do you think it could be the plugs? It pops on deceleration and definitly it missing or out of tune. Thanks. Ty
  13. hey guys hows it hanging got a problem with this 83 venture xvz12 it dosent start Ive already whent through and checked every thing 1 cleaned all connections and plugs 2 new tci old one was shot but it started the bike but only ran on the front two cylenders 3 cleaned the carbs 4 tested the pressure sensor checked ok 5 new spark plugs 6 new battery now the thing its not doin is getting a spark when cranking but when you turn off the key its gets one spark on both front cylenders i jumped the ing switch un pluged and ran a wire on both connectors same thing im running out of ideas here so any help would be appreciated Thanks, Kenny
  14. I've been following and reading some posts on installing RK slip-ons. Have also read how to mod them for more sound. Everyone talks about drilling out, knocking out plugs, etc. Today I found a local customizing shop for Harley's and asked if he had any RKs. He took me over to a shelf he had in back and got several down to show me. One set were stright tip and I could not see through them another set which he had cut out (gutted) were in bad shape. Then he showed me what he said was a newer set (he said from an 06) that were slash cut style and were in good shape. When I held them up I could see all the way through them no plugs or anything blocking view or anything. I could see a pipe in the center with lots of holes in it running the length of the inner pipe. He said they were stock and nothing had been done to them. My question is are there diff cores in the stock RK mufflers. Some blocked by plugs and baffles and some that you can see stright through? Sure need help.
  15. OK, I have a 2006 RS Midnight Venture which I bought new. I love the bike and want to keep it in tip-top shape. I have been changing the oil every 2500 miles or so, but recently switched to synthetic and plan on changing it every 5000 from now on. Let me be totally honest and confess that I am NOT mechanically minded and have some questions about which I am totally confused. So folks, I need your expertise on the following as owners, riders and mechanics on the Ventures. 1) If I put the K&N air filters in, do I have to have the carbs re-jetted? I have the RoadKing mufflers, and the mechanic at the dealer said I would probably have to let them re-jet the carbs because the increased air flow will lean out the bike and could cause problems. Another mechanic said re-jetting is not necessary when installing the K&N filters. CONFUSING!!! :doh:Who is right?? 2) Spark plugs - I have been told that the NGK Iridium plugs are THE best. At $12 each, they should be! Regular NGK plugs are $3 each. If the Iridium plugs are beneficial and improve start up, performance, gas mileage , or last longer, or something, I don't mind spending the $$. Problem is, I have been told "Yes, they are much better" by one dealer's mechanic, and "No, they just cost more and don't improve anything" by another dealer's mechanic. Also, one said change the plugs every 8000 miles and the other said just run the plugs until they give me a problem, like hard start up or engine missing. Sheeshhh!! :doh:Who is right? 3) Gasoline - I have used the 87 octane for the last few months and haven't seen any problems as of yet, but sure don't want to mess up my ride. One dealer mechanic said I should use ONLY 91 octane or higher in my bike. The other said 87 or 89 is fine to use. Oh brother!! Who the heck is right?? HELP!!!!! Thanks in advance!
  16. Two days prior to hurricane Ike hitting here, I pulled the tank off my '05 RSV and changed the plugs, while I had the tank off I also changed out the coolant and cleaned the reservoir. I also went ahead and changed the oil and filter. Anyway during this time the storm hit and needless to say my attention got diverted from my task of completing the maint. I work in one of the Chemical plants here on the shipchannel and just the other day after two weeks I got the bike back together. Heres is the problem, it hs started back-firing rather badly after it geets good and warm (when down-shifting). After looking at a parts manual I see that there is a roll over valve I do not think that I reattached the hose from the tank to the valve. I really don't remember even taking it loose. Could this be causing the problem? Plugs were replaced with same type and #, no contamination of fuel. So I am stumped, what do ya'll think?
  17. Hello all, I just installed a set of Baron's bag slash pipes (and ah yeah, they are loud...) and plugged the AIS. I removed the front and rear AIS hoses and used a 3/4" and (3) 11/16" plugs to stopper up the mechanical parts as well as the hoses and yet I'm still getting a heck of a lot of popping on decel. I don't think it's any better than it was before I put the plugs in and I know no air can get by those plugs - they are shoved in there tight. One of the guys in our ride group has the same mufflers and had to rejet and I know just about everyone has had to say you don't have to but maybe there is just something different on the '06 and later bikes that needs to be specially tweaked? Any help appreciated, gp
  18. Would anyone have an amp in non working condition laying around,I've traced some problems down to the wiring harness on the smaller of the 2 multi-pin connectors that the radio plugs into.I think my audio and cb will work fine if I replace that harness. Arthur
  19. just in case everyone hasnt seen the new thread started for this......thought i'd give it one of those shameless plugs by posting it here it is in the international rally section under rides and rallys http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26095
  20. I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, here goes, I need to change the plugs in my 2005 RSV. 10k mles the 2 in the back seem to be fairly easy to reach . My question is the 2 front plugs. Do you remove the brace (not sure what is called) that prevents access to these plugs? And if so what problems can that lead to. Also what plugs do you guys recommend? Thanks
  21. This is a repeat of a reply I offered to a sad soul and thought it to be important enough to post a new thread so that everyone might benefit. This doesn't have to happen. Support the flat sided filler spout with a 16mm open wrench and turn against the 16 with a 14mm on the plug's hex head. That way you are neutralizing the stress placed on the thin sides of the pot metal fluid reservoir. Replace the plug with a brass or nylon washer and just snug it down. End of story.
  22. I pulled up to my local auto parts store at about 7:00 this evening to pick up some spark plugs for my RSV and I parked next to a young guy and his Vstrom. He had the seat off and was starting to take the plastic off. We exchanged hello's and commented that he hoped I didn't have his problem. A short in the electrical system due to melted insulation on several wires that had made contact with head. As I walked away to go in and get my spark plugs I noticed that he was from out of state with an Arkansas plate. When I came out I asked what I could do to help. While Riley (the owner) had fortunately found the short it was in one of those places that you could see but couldn't reach into. Neither he nor I had ever worked on a Vstrom. After I had assured him that I would not leave him stranded we spent the next 2 hours in the parking lot stripping the bike down by taking off the fairing and tank in order to get access to the wires. The store personnel were great in that they let him borrow tools from the shelf. We managed to get enough slack in the wire bundle and separate the melted wires in order to wrap them with tape. While we worked we got to know each other a bit and I found that he is a photographer who shoots weddings. So do I, or I did. So we were able to talk photography as well. Just as dark fell we had the bike back together and running well. He had another 40 miles to go tonight to make his next stop. He was very appreciative of my help and I enjoyed helping a fellow rider out. Hopefully, I'll get my spark plugs installed tomorrow night. DT

    Carb Synk Question

I have stopped by 2 Yamaha Dealers to ask how much they charge to Synk the carbs. The first dealer says its a 30 minute job and will cost $20 TO $40. The second dealer says its a 1 1/2 hour job and will cost $80 to $120 and consist of fine tuning each carb and recommended they install a set of plugs while they have it there. I told them I put a new of plugs in it this spring along with K&N filters. He said the K&N's were a good thing but I definently needed to get the carbs synked since I did that. Am I missing something? Is this a detailed job or and easy job? I want to get it done but don't know who to trust. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  24. The plug broke off inside the auxillary input on the 2007 RSV. Can't get to it from the front. Will I have to take off fairing to get at it from the back? Will I be able to get it out from the back or not be able to use ? Also have a squeal in the sound system when only the front headset is plugged in. Sometimes it will squeal all the time sometimes only when you go over a bump. When the wife plugs in in never squeals. Dealer said it was mic feedback but it doesn't go away when I cover up the mic. Thanks
  25. O.K. last Saturday morning when cold starting my 1986 VR, I left the Choke on too long and the engine stopped. Initially, the engine "fired right off" with the Choke on; however, after about 10 seconds with the Choke still on, the engine died and I have not been able to get it started since. It had been sitting for about three months with about two gallons of gas in it until three weeks ago when I rode it around the block several times. The battery has remained fully charged; however, it will not "fire off" after Saturday's episode with the Choke. The plugs and wires only have about 500 miles on them; however, they were installed about 2 years now. Tonight, I poured about 4 ounces of Seafoam in the gas tank hoping it might remove any varnishing, mositure, and/or trash deposits. I can smell gas after trying to crank it for about 15 seconds with the choke on. Question: I have read that to much Choke on a start up could cause the plugs to permanently foul out. Have you ever experienced this scenerio? Also, let me your thoughts and ideas what might be wrong. Thanks, Allen
