  1. What type (brand) spark plugs you use?
  2. 83 venture, long time in rebuild, 84 miles on new plugs, 29mpg , feels like slight miss at idle, runs fine otherwise. Run 1/2 can seafoam/full tank in this 84 miles. Refilled 2.9 gallons and add second 1/2 seafoam, but have not run anymore yet pics of plugs cyl #1 nice tan, came out slightly wet cyl #2 hardly any coloring cyl #3 hardly any coloring, came out very wet cyl #4 vary carboned My read of plugs, please correct me if you believe otherwise #1 about ok #2 super rich, likely not firing much-likely flooded #4 too rich Due to my concern of flooding, I rechecked float levels-mark with blue tape, bike level on lift. All seem ok to me Due to #4 to rich pulled diaphram, pic of carbon on slider Closed #4 idle screw 1/4 turn, all were set at 2 turns out. At a loss what to check next, reading on needle shim mod, but if I am too rich, seems pulling slider needle out more would be going in wrong direction-is this correct? Have not rechecked other diaphrams, but there were no holes or other problems during assembly. It is possible during assembly, diaphrams were not seated in grove correctly. would leaking diaphram cause my symptoms?
  3. Ok I searched and did not find my answer. So I am guessing this is going to be a dumb question. I am going to order a Carbtune Kit. There are different size plugs available, which ones do I choose? Thanks, Shane
  4. Well after several years of being parked I'm trying to bring my 1977 KZ1000 back to life, so I hope someone here can lend some advice. I've cleaned the carb, leveled the floats, did a coils mod to increase the spark. Took it out for a ride today and it ran good for about 20 miles. It then started to miss bad. When I go home I pulled the plugs and 3 of the 4 were covered in black soot. Put a new set in , moved the carb needle put 1/2 turn and got the same results. What should I try next?
  5. Can some one help me with the part No for the radiator plugs I am having trouble finding it in my manual and (where dose:confused24: one look?)
  6. Hi, First post. Background. ---My 84 venture is running rich. I replaced the carb diaphragms because they were shot, ultrasonically cleaned the carbs last fall. When you twist the throttle it goes like stink. Last fall it was sluggish at cruise (2000 RPM). I ran seafoam through it and put new plugs. It ran much better but the plugs are very sooty(ALL 4 PLUGS EQUALLY SOOTY) and the sluggish tendancy returned this spring. I plan to do seafoam and plugs again. Question- I have the idle mixture screws out 2.5 turns as per the manual. Do I screw them in or out to lean the carburation out? PS- 1984 Venture first gen with 30,000 miles on it. I rebuilt the exhaust collector box so the exhaust is tight. Thanks for any input. James
  7. Ok, here is my first question. 1. Are the OEM airfilters able to be cleaned, or is it better to go ahead and just replace them? 2. As far as NGK-DPR7EIX-9 plugs are they really worth the extra? 3. Any one in eastern NC with a carbtune. I'll be looking to do this after the plugs and filters. The stealers want both my arms for what I've read is a 10-15 job. I've got 19000 miles in just under a year and with every service I'm getting more indepth and down and dirty with my 08rstd. (with the help of the manual on here)
  8. Has anyone had an issue with to much SeaFoam fouling your plugs? I ran about 1/4 tank of fuel, and an entire can of SeaFoam to clean my carbs. Now my plugs are shot. I had to replace them just to get it to run. However, that being said one thing I noticed, is only the drivers rear cylinder was running. I could, and did, unplug all 3 other plug wires, and it ran. But if you unplug drivers rear plug wire, it won't run. After that replaced the plugs, with used, as did not have new. Will get new plugs today. It is running again. But, still seems to be a a bit rough. I know the carbs have never been synced, as the little brass plugs are still on the carbs. So, gotta figure this problem out now. Sheesh, what's next? So far, has new wires, new plugs-now a bit fouled, replaced the fuel pump and filter, replaced the selector valve on the tank, regluing all the plastic fairing pieces. Still needs the clutch bearing fixed. I am hoping this is not a money pit.
  9. ok im looking to see if there is a link or post here on sparkplugs im realy into tearing the bike down. with a good yamaha rider. not a venture owner. but has a stable full of old yamaha,s ok he got my tires from the guy who was suppose to have done them the last time and didnt. also got my brake pads and did the rotors. so i now know i have the new tires on the new brake pads and the rotors. bike is realy starting to come along thank the good man above for this man. well he decided to pull the plugs. due to me useing the seafoam and still haveing some idle issues and slight backfire on right hand side. well the rear spark plug on the right hand side had something hard and black stuck between the electroid and the L on the bottom? so im thinking this plug wasent fireing? sorry i didnt snap a pick but it looks like a hard piece of coal?. where going to install fresh plugs. and recheck idle and stuff. he doesent have a sync tool or know how to sync the carbs. so anything i can do or try. also what type of glue can i use to fix some cracks in the side covers? both are cracked about 2 inches on the front part of the covers . or should i use a hot solder gun and melt them from the back side?
  10. Well, I finally got around to changing out the plugs. Only 10 k on the 07 RSTD but the book calls for change at 8k. Called several shops; they wanted to charge between $100 and $125 plus parts---wow! Went down to local auto supply and a purchased 4 new plugs for a bit over $10. Took off the tank and was able to get at the plugs--not too bad at all! She actually started right off----
  11. Does anyone have, or can someone take a picture of how the wires and plugs connect under the passenger seat. I had my CB off and like a dummy I didn't take a pic before I unplugged stuff and it's been long enough that I've forgotten where a couple of plugs go. I would appreciate some help here...thanks a lot.
  12. Bike is leaking gas and it drains down onto the crankcase breather onto the left side clutch cover to the ground. I checked the plugs and the right front was gas fouled. Changed all the plugs and it seems like a new bike, quit backfiring also. I checked gas tank... no rust visible. Did the seafoam 25% of can in 3 different tanks of gas still have 25% left...man that is expensive stuff. Drained carbs and it was impossible to see what came out. These measures didn't stop the leak. I haven't taken the tank clear off and tapped the floats yet. Took it to a shop months ago and $300 later I have new jets and a replaced fuse for my light bar, I explained the problems and I asked to have the floats checked but I got new jets and a fuse. One jet was corrosion green so I don't feel completely bad, but I left the shop with the same problem, the undiscovered bad plug, and the backfiring also. This was the good metric shop in St Joseph, the others are even worse. This is a metropolitan area of 85,000, you would think there would be one good shop here, but noooooo. If I owned a Harley I would have 3 good service options, metric ...3 very bad service options. I still suspect the float was not set correctly or was stuck when I purchased the bike, a 2004 Midnight. It was a repossession and probably sat for many months. Any suggestions, I dread the thought of trying to take the carburetor apart to set the floats, never have done that before. Changing the the buried plugs took me 3 hours so a carburetor would be 2 day job for me, and my not so flexible back. Any other suggestions?
  13. Recommended plugs that I can buy at Canadian Tire or Auto Value? Replacing spark plugs requires tank removal? thnx
  14. Bought a new-to-me 97 Royal Star Classic. Since I am not sure of the maintenance history I was going to change (among other things) the spark plugs and wires. Any recommendations on what brand of wires, or where to purchase from? Thanks.
  15. OK, bike was running a little rough. Decided to put new plugs in. Got the new plugs and put them in. Now bike is running alot smoother, but smokes very bad. It is white smoke, and gets worse when you hit the throttle. Idles fine, and holds a steady 1000 rpm at idle. Accelerates smooth and even. Just smokes very bad. Tried adjusting the carbs, did carb sync, and rechecked plugs. Not sure what the problem is. Ran seafoam, checked oil, all is well. After warming up, temp is in the normal range. No water in oil, no suit coming from exhaust. Just thick white smoke. Any help would be great. The weather is getting to nice to have a bike not in working order. Will be watching for a response.
  16. First a question. In the pictures there are two plugs shown, a white one and a green one. the green one is from the clutch switch but i cant find where it goes, any ideas? The white one is a mystery...??? it has two black/white wires and a black/yellow and a blue/yellow wire. two of the pictures show a white plug that plugs into something on the middle of the rail. that relay is missing, what is it? the frame is from the 83 and dosent look the same as the 86 but the relays and harness is from the 86. all wiring from the 83 has been removed and replaced with an 86 harness. hand controls and all.

    Emergency Tire Repair

Howdy Any good suggestions to pack a tire repair kit to get one to the next town. E.g. plugs, aerosol cans with tire fix. Thanks Max
  18. whats the best and what gap are you seting them at please???
  19. I called my local Yamaha Service Manager about getting my 07 RSTD in for a 12,000 mile tune-up and I was SHOCKED! HE asked me if I changed my own oil...and I hesatated and told him that I do. He asked me if it runs okay..I said yes. He told me to clean my air filter and save myself about $800! I then asked him about the carb sync and new plugs...He said the RSTD rarely gets out of sync and the plugs would probably out last the bike! After I got myself off the floor..I said thanks and hung up. These bikes are very tough machines. I did get a set of new plugs (NKG Iridium IX) and took out one my plugs from the bike and it looks perfect. Maybe later. Mark:240:
  20. As I slowly get to the end of my restoration, I find another thing here or there that causes my project to slow down... I got the carb and ignition issues worked out! Replacing the diaphragms fixed the "lean" condition. Cleaning the plugs fixed the ignition issues as I had to use the enrichener to keep the engine running before fixing the carbs. However, I now noticed some very nice cracking in the rubber "half-moons" plugs on the valve cover gaskets. I also have noticed a little oil on the engine...not much, but enough to know that the valve cover gaskets are going. What parts do I need to replace when doing the gaskets? What components do I need to remove to access the valve covers? I already have ALL the plastic off. I will also be removing the carbs (again) soon to replace the carb mount boots (very tiny leak found). I've heard that 2nd Gen valve cover gaskets will work on 1st Gens. Is this accurate? Thanks in advance! WHCC
  21. I've checked the post and have not been able to find a tread about this problem. I just bought a 2001 with 4,550 miles on it. When I arrived the previous owner was warming up the Venture. He said it was cold natured and took awhile to warm up. He said he usually would just ride with the choke on until it warmed up. My 2000 Venture if you do have to pull out the choke you just pull it out for a few seconds and then push the choke in and it is fine. This 2001 you have to leave the choke out for 5 minutes or more before you can push it in or the Venture will die. I test drove the Venture before I bought it and it flies on the highway. It runs very strong and smooth. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be the problem? The Venture still has the original tires on it so I'm going to assume it has the original plugs. I'm going to put new plugs in it but I would think that if the plugs had anything to do with it that it would not run so strong or smooth on the highway. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Harry:bang head:
  22. OK guys yesterday at some point I lost both rear brake lights on my 04 silverado. I drove the last 300 miles with my daughter tailing me tight with her Subaru just to make it here.I believe I have a wiring problem. The brake fuse is fine, tail light bulbs are fine, and the third brake light that sets high above the rear glass works OK. This tells me the brake light switch is OK.The ground to both rear tail lights is probably OK as the rear turn signals, park lights etc are OK. I'm thinking maybe the master feed line comes into some connection plugs under the frame behind rear bumper. I'll check it out today when it warms up here. I got my volt meter with me just no wiring diagram. Those rear electrical plugs may be corroded.Nothing like plenty to do on vacation.
  23. I own a Honda VTX1300 also. Using the choke (really a fuel enricher) fouls plugs rapidly and therefor needs to be used spairingly. I'm curiois about the proper use of the choke on the RSV. It seems to need the choke at first start up when cold but I dont want to foul plugs.
  24. I have an 87 Venture Standard, which has been running great, and still runs pretty well, but something's off a bit. It doesn't miss, and seems to run well above 3500 rpm or so, but at lower rpm levels it has a bit of a rumble, as if the carbs are out of sync, but I'm not sure. I run about a quarter can of Seafoam when I fill the gas tank, (most times), and recently replaced the spark plugs, which made no difference. All the plugs looked the same. Someone new to the bike probably wouldn't even notice it, but it's definitley there. Would this be a likely symptom of the carbs being out of sync, or the dreaded diaphragm problem, or could it be ignition? I just can't put my finger on what sort of problem it is. I figure someone here may be able to help clue me in. Thanks.
  25. OK, the numbers are in - Goose 1, Magic plugs 0! Executive Summary: In a recent thread the subject of NGK Iridium plugs generated several comments from some members claiming an improvement in either performance or fuel economy attributed specifically to these "Magic" plugs. I maintained that there is absolutely no way any magic plug could ever improve anything over standard plugs except longevity (they do not erode the electrodes as fast). Kross Kountry and I devised and executed a quasi-scientific test designed to effectively prove or disprove the idea that magic plugs could improve fuel economy. This test was performed by two similar bikes riding the same routes and speeds together for several tanks of gas with standard plugs in both, then several more tanks of gas with magic plugs in the test bike, while carefully comparing the amount of gas each bike took at each fill. The exact miles per gallon for either bike are completely irrelevant in this test, as the only significant issue is to determine if the ratio of fuel used by Bike A to Bike B changed after the magic plugs were installed. At the end of 732 miles, the fuel used by the test bike was effectively unchanged, "proving" that magic plugs have NO value in improving fuel economy. The Results: By running two similar bikes together through several tanks of fuel, we were able to remove most of the normal variables (such as weather, terrain, speed, riding styles, quality of fuel, etc.) that make normal measurement of miles per gallon on a motorcycle fairly useless. Since our tanks are so small, the variables effectively invalidate every single calculation, but in this test they can mostly be ignored because they should have affected BOTH bikes the same way. And, again, we were not actually concerned by the MPG calculations, just the ratio of fuel used in Bike A to Bike B. There are a few significant variables that remained, and I will detail these in the gory details below. Bike A was the control bike with standard plugs. This was my 2005 RSV with over 70,000 miles on it and no special preparation. I consider the bike in reasonably good tune, and the plugs were changed a bit over 2,000 miles ago. Bike B was the test bike. This was Kross Kountry's 2008 RSV with about 8,000 miles on it. Prior to starting the test we reset the float levels correctly and set the fuel mixture screws. All indications were that the bike was running excellently throughout the test. We began the test by installing new standard plugs in the test bike, then riding together for three tanks of gas over a variety of roads for a total of 412 miles. For the first tank, 150 miles, the ratio of fuel used A:B was 1.06:1, meaning that for each gallon of fuel used by the test bike, the control bike used 1.06 gallons. Tank 2 was 148 miles, and the ratio was 1.11:1. The third tank was just 114 miles with a ratio of 1.10:1. For the entire 412 miles with standard plugs in both bikes, the ratio of fuel used by Bike A to Bike B was 1.09:1. At the end of day 1 we switched the test bike to new NGK Iridium plugs (the "Magic" plugs). For this test we ran only two tanks of gas for a total of 320 miles. Tank 1 was 159 miles with a ratio of 1.09.1. Tank 2 was 161 miles with a ratio of 1.05:1, for a total average ratio of fuel used by Bike A to Bike B of 1.07:1, actually WORSE than with standard plugs! But read the gory details below to find out why I do NOT consider that significant. In effect, I believe that there was absolutely NO difference in the fuel used by the test bike with either plugs. In addition, Kross Kountry is a professional driver, and he feels he is probably more in tune to the "feel" of a vehicle than the average rider might be. He stated that he was not able to detect even the slightest hint of difference in the way the bike ran after we installed the Magic plugs. All The Gory Details: One of the variables we were not able to completely remove was filling the bike to the exact same level each time. We did, however try to minimize this by carefully using the ignition key to measure the fuel level; however, we did not try to check each other. In one case, I believe the slab at the pump was sloped, and I pulled in facing up hill, while he pulled in to the other side of the pump facing down hill. This was the first tank with the magic plugs. The slope was not real evident, so I ignored it at the time, but Tracy commented later that he wondered if he got a true fill since his bike came down off the "Full" mark sooner than before. This seems to have been verified by the lower than normal ratio at the second tank fill, where his bike needed more gas to completely replace the fuel that had not been added on the previous fill; the two tanks together should have removed that variable. In addition, after I shut the pump off for that final fill and re-checked my key measurement, it seemed as if I might have been just a tad too low, but it was too late to add more. I'll readily admit that only doing this comparison for two or three tanks is still not enough to average out all the variations we might have had in the exact amount of fuel added, but it is all we had time for! Another variable that I introduced without thinking ahead of time was the weight on the bike. Most of the baseline test with standard plugs in both bikes was run with a passenger on my bike, but all of the second day was run solo. On the first day, about a third of the first tank was run solo, which would account for the closer ratio of fuel used than we got on the next two tanks. This, along with the issue above concerning the exact fill amounts, is why I do not believe the test bike actually used more gas with the magic plugs than it did with standard plugs - the reasonable fact is that my bike simply used slightly less fuel when riding solo than it did two-up. But if someone wants to claim this completely invalidates the test, well, I'd be hard pressed to argue. The odometers on both bikes were consistently very close, with Bike B showing approximately 1 mile less over 150 miles. For all of the MPG calculations below, I have used the numbers from my bike, removing that small variable. Here are all the exact numbers related to each tank of fuel during the test: Day 1, tank 1 - 1/2 city riding, 1/2 SMALL secondary roads at speeds around 50 mph. Bike A took 3.873 gallons and got 38.73 mpg. Bike B: 3.647 gallons, 41.13 mpg. Ratio 1.06:1 Day 1, tank 2 - all riding was back roads, but somewhat larger and straighter than above. Roughly 1/2 the riding was under 70 mph, and 1/2 between 70 and 75 mph (as reported by GPS). Bike A took 4.249 gallons, 34.83 mpg. Bike B: 3.824 gallons, 38.70 mpg. Ratio 1.11:1 Day 1, tank 3 - virtually all was straight highway or freeway at 70 - 75 mph. Bike A took 3.418 gallons, 33.35 mpg. Bike B: 3.103 gallons, 36.74 mpg. Ratio 1.10:1 Day 2, tank 1 - open roads, 1/2 under 70 mph, 1/2 over 70 mph. Bike A took 4.554 gallons, 34.91 mpg. Bike B: 4.187 gallons, 36.74 mpg. Ratio 1.09:1 Day 2, tank 2 - open roads with two thirds over 70 mph and running the Talimena parkway at the end. Bike A took 4.465 gallons, 34.91 mpg. Bike B: 4.251, 37.873 mpg. Ratio 1.05:1 That's it - hopefully all my math and typing is correct! Goose
