  1. Didn't see any other posts similar to my issue, so here it goes. Long story short, last summer moved the bike to new place. Garage was cluttered, so it sat outside for 2 days. Rain on one of them. After that, the bike would idle, but as soon as you tried to give it gas, it would act as if it were limited at 1500 rpm. When that happens, the tach drops to zero. Let off the gas, tach comes back. Didn't have time to ride last year so I left it. Well it still does it. Pulled the battery out and looked at the connects on the TCI and they are dry and not excessively dirty or corroded. New plugs and there seems to be spark on all 4 although the two rear plugs I pulled out were wet. Any suggestions ? I have the shop manual and it basically says to check the resistance on the coils and if that's not it, replace the TCI. I'm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It's nice today and I'd really like to ride again. Please help ! Phil
  2. I've been hunting around, and I can't figure out exactly how to remove the class computer so I can do the E4 repair. On my 86 venture royale, the class is attached to a pivoting mount, so I can easily get to the plugs, but I can't get it out, I loosened the four screws at the back, but that doesn't seem to be all I need to do to get it out of the fariring. Need some experienced assistance please.
  3. All fluids and filters changed out and/or cleaned, new brake pads on the rear, and new plugs installed. Wow, what a difference that made! The old plugs had about 30K miles on them, and still looked pretty good, but it was time. With all that done, I took a 240 mile ride today, and the RSV just seems to glide through the air and through each gear. All of the minor little vibrations are gone, the acceleration is amazing, the idol now purrs, and the engine never seemed to get that hot, even though it hit 88 today. I am now truly ready for my trip to DC next week, and the other 3 long rides we have planned over the next 3 or 4 months. Doin my happy dance!!!!!
  4. My last two takes of gas, I have only gotten about 30 mpg in my 05 RSTD. I have consistently gotten 35-38 as long as I have had the bike. Changed plugs and air filters last year, oil is good, nothing different in the bike or riding styles. Took a laser thermometer to measure the exhaust pipes right where the come out of the cylinders. The front two, which are hard to get a reading on because of the shielding, I think I got ~250. The rears I can see the actual pipe and got ~650 on each. Wondering if I just haven't gotten a good reading on the fronts, or if I am actually having some firing issues. Will pull the plugs and check, but wanted opinions on exhaust pipe temperatures.
  5. Well things are coming together. I bought a kit with the hardware and adaptor plates from Dingy a while back and been locating the proper lights and power plugs to fit. Got the lights the other day and the plugs should be here next week. The stock headlight bucket has been drilled and the plate fitted and I assembled the whole thing yesterday. Hella 90mm H9 Projectors high and low. Mean looking lil bugger ain't it? These should toast the fur on Bambis butt. So much for overdriving the headlights now. More info and pics as it comes together. Mike
  6. Sometimes students come into my class and I'm sure even they don't know what they been smoking. BUT have you ever had conversations with a pair of gurus who KNOW what they been smoking? I'm posting up the latter part of conversations I've had with them. If you're a guru (who knows what they are smoking) what would you say? Have to figure out if it is electrical or fuel issues. New plugs, ride it, and then look at them. Running hot or fouling. Rough in low rpms? does it clear when you get it going? Rough all the way through? Then you think about what to start looking for. Good answer eh Also it would be interesting to note whether or not the plugs are firing inside the engine. You'll have to go for another ride to here to find that out. Also, did you remove the ignition wires when you changed the motor, so are the wires going to the right plugs from the right coils. Still need to know what kind of ignition wires you have,,, copper or carbon? The other thing could be that the boots under the carbs are not seated properly, they may have come off after you put them on properly,, it happens,,,, that would give false air into the cylinders and also throw off a carb tune, and so you would have the same symptoms that you have now. Carbtune done with Tuckett's unit, with Tuckett watching, I've done it a dozen times myself too. Wires are copper, not carbon. Wires were not removed during this engine swap. Regardless, I know which wires go where. Carbs are seated properly on the boots. I've taken the carbs off the bike every winter as part of my normal cleanup, with last winter being a total rebuild, ran good. On reinstallation for one of those times I didn't get them seated properly on the boots and noticed that fact by how it ran before I got to the corner stop sign, black smoke, that is not the problem this time. I'm concluding it's a fuel delivery issue. How about you? Plugs removed looking a very little bit white ...too lean a mixture? If it were my bike sitting here, I would check all the plug wires to make sure they are firing properly,,, just to rule that out,,, buuttt too lean a mixture will also give you problems but then it would tend to bog out when you twist the throttle,, which I don't think it does. Some more questions then: Do you need a choke for a cold start? Does it run better with the choke partially closed? Did you replace the fuel filter? A far out question,,,, are you sure it's a 1300 engine? Something that's interesting is the way it starts and takes off, doesn't seem to be any problems there. Post it up, and see if anybody else has better ideas. Carl some more answers then... I need choke for a cold start, same as always, between a quarter and half of the lever. I does not run better at partial choke. Fuel filter gets replaced with every rear tire change. The Pinwall Cycle video shows the bike coming in was a MkII with '89 colours. The engine that I picked up had all the 1300 badging on the side covers. I'm still stuck on ignition. When I sprayed WD40 into the intakes, it didn't change anything. So if the fuel delivery was on the low side or none at all, it should have smoothed out, if the fuel was rich it would have started bogging down, that's why I would think ignition, and I would like to see if those plugs are firing under load. Did you do a compression test on this engine, if it's low in a couple of cylinders, it would also present the same symptoms. I'll tell ya'll what I say.....if I start caring more about what an engine looks like than how it runs, I must be gettin ready to ride a 2nd gen...OH WHAT HATH BECOME ME!
  7. I have an 89 VR. The last I rode it was mid Oct 2010 of which I just finished most of a tank full of seafoam. Did some minor maintenance. The only maintenance ignition and carb related was changed new plugs. It has been on the center stand with a battery tender all this time. I did start it once in the winter and allowed it to warm up really good. That was before I changed the plugs. Got the exact same plugs and cerified the manufactured gap. I turn the key and heard the clicking of what I think is the fuel pump. After 10 seconds the clicking slowed and stopped. I pulled the choke, made sure the run switch was on and then hit the starter. It turns over good. I was expecting that about the 3rd hit to the started I would get some form of life in the V4. The engine did kind of start as I kept on the starter and the choke, but could not sustain it self. I stopped and looked on the floor and saw a large puddle of fluid. I pushed the VR forward then smelled the liquid and yes it is fuel. With it on the side stand I noticed that fuel was leaking by the dampness indicator on the left side. But thats probably because I had put it on the side stand. I removed the left side cover and could see what I think is the mono shock and it looks really wet like fluid is leaking on it. Any suggestions?
  8. I had a mac. tell me if you use a large amount of Sea fome in some thing you should change plugs after words because it damages the plugs. Has any one notesed this??? I would think it would help clean up the plugs! Don't Know
  9. Hello all, I has a slight coolant leak under the cylinder "fins" that developed over the winter while in storage on my '03 RSV. From talking to people and reading posts by the fine folks here, I ordered in new plugs and changed all 4. Taking out the old ones, I lost some coolant as expected. The new plugs fit fine and I have no leaks now. The question I have is the new plugs have a female thread in the center of them for a bolt or screw. The old ones were just rubber with no threads. Is there supposed to be a bolt or screw that goes in the threaded portion of these new plugs? Thanks.
  10. I was looking to spark test my plugs while off the bike (84 VR). Outdoor temp has been around -3 to 7C, and I can't get my bike to start. Just did a whole carb overhaul, charged the battery. Plugs have only 3000kms on them. Bike turns over fine, and for long enough before battery too weak, but no start. Took plugs out, and they are wet, so getting gas. Anyway, I have a 10000v transformer, and was wondering if I hooked it up to a plug to see if it is firing, would or could it harm them? Any thoughts Also, would 10000v be enough?
  11. hey guys newbie here and first post, i read thru some of the previous posts but didnt find my solution so here goes, just got and 1st 1984 yamaha venture,41k miles, runs like a top,all the carbs were just cleaned and synced, has new plugs also,oh yea and the tank was cleaned while the carbs were off have reciepts for all this work, anyway after it warms up runs great, perfect idle no misses fires up 1st try everytime after warm, but i live in florida so no cold mornings here lol,but every morning i start it up even if im not going out and i have to turn it over a couple times (without choke) then just barely choke it to get it started everytime, and have to warm it up at least 5 minutes before i go,now this isnt the biggest deal in the world but was wondering is it normal? and if not what else is there to check? i mean it runs and idles perfect never a backfire or miss,so im assuming timings good and it just had all that other work, and i put new filter and plugs in myself,so any ideas or should i just live with it? and going to say hi in the welcome section after this but im a 1st time yamaha owner and i luv it,im in st.pete florida, thnx guys for any and all advise
  12. I am at a loss. I seem to be missing both cylinders on the left side. When I crank my bike (05 Midnight Venture) the right side heats up but the left side doesn't. I have tried replacing the spark plugs but that didn't work. Any suggestions would be very helpful as I am at the end of my rope! Mike:confused24:
  13. Not 100% sure of this, but it seems as it's been the neutral switch all along! Just conducts enough to light the dash but not enough to energise the sidestand relay! All this time it has been on the sidestandwith the neutral light on, but no spark. In order to change the vacuum lines and carb mounts I've had it on the center stand. Finally got done with all that stuff and decided to do some serious electricaql troubleshooting. Measuerd the resistance on the neutral switch to ground and found about 20 ohms or so. Reminded me of when my kickstaqnd switch went out, wasn't open, but had around 6-8 ohms, enough to kill the starting circuit. Soooo, long story short, put the kickstand up, used the clutch to start, and within 30 seconds it was running!! Very rough, but runing. I wonder if 2-3 year old gas has anything to do with it?!!? It has new plugs but they may be somewhat fouled out already. A full tank of High test and a can of seafoam should do something, followed by new plugs again!
  14. Hi group, Dunno about everyone else but been chasing missing bolts, and having problems with the hex / allen key heads stripping on my 03 Venture. While stored in my garage for our great Canadian winter, I noticed both sides saddle bag rail's front bolts missing. Anyone know the part number or a suitable replacement? Also noticed 2 small leaks of coolant under the cooling fins that cover the cylinders on the left side. Took it to a shop who removed them and told me it was the coolant plugs - a quick fix. I got the bike put away just before the snow flew and finally picked up the replacement plugs, figuring I would replace all 4. Well, I did 3. Why? Because the shop who discovered the leaky plugs must have stripped the head on 1 of the 3 bolts. Frustrated that every time I go to do something on the bike, there is always 1 allen/hex headed bolt that is either seized or stripped. I removed the backrest due to getting sore knees from the forward leaning position I was in, despite adjusting it all I could....and had 1 seized bolt, that I stripped the head from trying to remove. Tried removing the saddlebags to switch back to stock exhaust from Barons Custom Bag Slash....stripped 1 bolt each bag. Got the quick release ones (Butlers?). Frustrating.
  15. Hello. I just bought a used ignitor from Pinwall and it has two plugs (4XY-01). Mine has three plugs (4XY-00). Their ad says it came from a "2006 Yamaha Royal Star Venture XVZ1300TF". My bike is a 1999 XVZ13TF. I just want to get my ducks lined up before calling Pinwall, so I have two questions. 1. Is the ignitor located just in front of the battery on the 1999 RSV? In other words, am I actually looking at the correct part? 2. Can anyone tell me if this ignitor may have come from a first generation venture? It has 2 plugs vs. 3. Thanks. Tommy Howard

    Did a few mods

Cold and rainy yesterday, Pam said let's hang here and do the mods you been wanting do so we installed a garage door opener took the seat off on the right side just above the battery mounted the control with 2 sided tape and with some cat-5 wire reason we use that it is low voltage and we got plenty of it then we put the button on the left side right under the seat in the plastic shield , the only tricky part was get the wires solder to the control. Now I don't have to fumble for it coming up to the door. Then we installed a 12v power supply on the left side rear where the cap is that was easy enough. Change the plugs at almost 30k miles on them that was a joke they looked brand new but I had the plugs figure do it now since I was I was that far into it.. I'm thankful Pam is 5' tall makes it for the short tight places for us, being 6'4 can be a pain twisting around.. I will have to say the garage door opener is the best mod I've done in awhile
  17. We came back from our trip to St. Charles MO. and all seemed well. Bike was getting 37mpg hwy. Went over 2,000mi hit some rain at times but all seemed OK, Let the bike sit for a few days in the garage and went out to ride to town noticed that it had no power and at one point it felt like it was going to die but went ahead and rode it to town. Went by the shop and picked up my Temp.gun and did some readings on the exhaust side and here are my readings. EXHAUST READINGS #1 410'F #2 135'F #3 89'F #4 130'F By the readings I'm running on one good cylinder? I bought some more plugs and changed them out, all four plugs were black with carbon but not wet looking. Even after new plugs installed still have same reading on exhaust. I would appreciate any help you guys can give me as where to go for further diagnostic.? Carbs - wiring - ? Buddy
  18. I have read all the posts about the plugs behind the fins. I pulled the fins to check the plugs and found none of them to be leaking. The drip just started as the cold weather set in, It drips just behind the kickstand pivot. The puddle is the size of a silver dollar after 24 hours. This on an '01 RSV 40K on the odo. So if it's not the cylinder plugs what else might it be? I see no seepage around the head gaskets or anywhere on top of the motor. Inspection with a mirror and flashlight of the underside of the motor shows it dripping off the shift rod, but I can't tell where it's coming from. The reserve tank is at the proper level. No overheating problems. My last few rides have been in temps of 25 to 40 degrees. I need to get this fixed before Thursday, as a pgr member we provide the parking guides for the veterans day service at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
  19. Ideas needed. I pulled my plugs out to check them. Number 2,3,and 4 were wet. Running down the road at lower rpm's it sounds like it was flooding. I have richened out the carps. Could it just be to rich on those cylinders. The pipes are all hot so it is firing on all four. When I turn the throutle it runs fine at higher rpm's. Do I just need to lean out those 3.?????????????????????? Thanks Richard
  20. I hope I am doing this correct. I have recently purchased a 1990 Yamaha Venture Royal, 1300 cc. I would like to replace the spark plugs but can't seem to get to them all. Can anyone help me? Do I have to remove the battery, and air filter? Thank you... Hope i am not stepping out of bounds by reposting this for Slim.
  21. I know this is a Venture site but there is lots of info here and I need a little help does anyone know what the plugs should gap on this bike I don't have a manuel for it and I am trying to get it running.
  22. I had a pm a couple of days ago of a new member that lived close bye but I work rotating 12hr shifts so it was hard to get back to him so today I had off and was installing new front springs thanks to Skydoc and he came over to shoot the breeze. The new springs work great and I fab'd up a bracket for the aftermarket rectifier that bolts to the frame and exhaust but keeps it away from the drive and heat from the exhaust, this way I was able to keep the OEM rectifier in place with all the plugs just in case my new one craped out all I would have to do is take the side cover off and switch plugs and off I go.When I get back from my vaca I will have it powder coated along with other stuff on the bike, Oh back to the new member he is a great guy and needs tips on how to go riding without the wife...lol
  23. My carbtune finally arrived. The bike still has the AIS. After removing the 4 vacuum plugs, do you have to plug the 2 AIS lines while synching? Thanks
  24. I've done sea foam twice and sync'd the carbs, installed new plugs. I rode about 105 miles or so today so next I'm going to pull the plugs to see how they look. OK...so I have the side cases off to do the carb sync and change plugs. I've just received the Plastex kit so I rode with the plastic off while I work on them. Tonight I went for a ride and kept getting a "pricking" feeling to my inner thigh. I thought it might have been a sharp end of a cable tie or a wire twist tie sticking me but after a few checks to see what it could be I realized it was the spark plug wire giving me minor zaps! (both left and right) So...perhaps a stupid question...but does that mean I most certainly need new plug wires? But I'm getting 34 mpg (US) or 6.1 L/100 km or 40.8 miles per Can. gal. and that was at least 3/4 of the time doubled up! SO....I now am thinking my bike is not doing so bad....and that it just isn't the powerhouse that SOME PEOPLE (who shall remain nameless eh Yammer Dan???) is just putting us on about these 1st gens being such an amazing powerhouse!
  25. i bought new autolite platinum plugs for my ranger today. the old plugs have 97,000 mi. on them. it is a 3 litre v-6. the plugs are easy to get to from above , but i hear all kinds of horror stories about breaking plugs off removing the old ones. is this a major issue to worry about? the heads are cast iron. i haven't changed plugs in a vehical in many years.
