  1. Got my 2008 Venture home today from her first service and decided to give her a bath. So I removed all the bolts from left saddlebag and turned around to carefully pace the bolts on the ground when I heard the bag go skiding down the driveway about 12 feet. Needless to say my drawers were ruined and after retrieving the bag found deep scratches all over the side and top. Called the dealer and they want $785 for a new one and told me if I tried to repaint it the paint would not match because of different batches of paint. Moral of story: wear old drawers when working on bike, NEVER turn your head to store a bolt, and make friends with a good body/paint guy.
  2. Hi it's been awhile sence i have been here, My question is who is the best way to remove the emblems saftly and on my "99" will i have the outline left. The paint dont look oxidized but you know you cant tell till there off. Any ideals ?
  3. I put this same post in the original thread but decided to do it again with a new thread since I was so slow responding to the last questions. Sorry about the delay responding. Been in south Louisiana piggin' out on Cajun cookin'! Use duct tape to protect the chrome and a sawzall (reciprocating saw) to make the cut right past the seam (on the exit side of seam) as it drops to a cone. Smooth out edges with an orbital sander. Paint the insides with high temp black paint. Be careful and don't cut into the inner pipe until you decide how far you want it to extend out of the baffle plate. Doing it this way keeps you from having to remove the mufflers. If you're nervous about cutting, leave extra metal that can be slowly ground down with a 4-1/2" angle grinder.
  4. I did some computer work for a local business and friend. I saved him so much money he is offering to paint my bike for free using House of Kolor paint, I can do candy or anything in their paint line. Anyone know of what colors look best on a 1st gen? I think it needs to stay a "classy" color and stay away from neon lime green crotch rocket or other sporty colors. anyone know of what colors look really good? does the bike look good with a metallic black or any of the dark colors or should I stick to something brighter?
  5. I want to paint my 99 with sidecar this winter but have no idea waht colors.I want it 2 tone .Can some of you experts offer some pictures of 2nd gen with different paint colors other than the stock colors.Wild or mild.
  6. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to touch up the black on the engine? I have some spots that I would like to touch up.
  7. Hello all i am in the middle of repainting my bike. This weekend i will have it all primed and water sanded to put paint on it. I will do that the folling weekend i will be going yellow and black and repainting the wheels black . While its been apart i have a lot of accorys that were a wiring night mare i took them re wired them to a aftermarkit fuse box now the mess is gone when i am done i will post photos i am painting it myself i use to paint for a living but has been a while since i painted anything hope it turns out nice kevin wisor 1999 rsv jax fl
  8. There are always two models of the RSV what accounts for the $600 dollar price difference. Other than paint I don't see that big of difference.
  9. Anyone got any ideas on where I can find Urushi Black paint to repair my saddelbag lid mishap? Yamaha dealer was totally useless as far as getting any info. Trying to keep it original.:bang head::bang head:
  10. This weekend I tried to repaint the gas flap because it was badly faded. I prepped the flap with a scuff pad and wiped it down with a tack cloth. As soon as I started spraying, the paint blistered as if I had put paint remover on it. I let the paint dry and sanded it smooth, then tried it again. It did it again. I'm stumped. The paint I was using is Dupli color. I was hoping if this small paint job worked out I would do one panel at a time, until I had the whole bike painted. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this? Do you think it is just a reaction between the old and the new paint? I wish I could provide pictures, but the camera is broken. Bill
  11. Hey all, I'm just getting back from Iraq and wanted to get the scoot out for a spin and knock the cob webs out of the exhaust. Well, lets just say when I opened the garage door I was not happy with what I found. Seems my boy decided to spray paint his dirt bike while I was gone. He took a can of white spray paint and commenced to spraying without taking any precaution to my bike sitting beside it. Needless to say, My bike has little specks of white all over it. The seats, the chrome, the bags....OH BOY......I'm really not happy with him. So instead of riding, I'm trying to find away to rub the white dots out without ruining the paint. Do any of you on this wonderfull site have any suggestions. Jim:bang head:
  12. A few days ago I stopped at a Yamaha dealer and was talking to a young salesman about Ventures, and repairing damages to the fairing etc. He said the paint codes (and maybe even the paint) were available from Yamaha and you should be able to paint and get a match. Is this true? Can you actually match up to the original color or do you basically have to repaint the entire fairing if you have some damage from a drop etc? Has anyone tried this? I am looking at a bike that has some scratches and minor damage and would like to restore it to original condition. Thanks.
  13. Hi, I need some help from you riders who have painted their fairings. I want to paint the lower left fairing part in the shape of an "L" with the lower front vents that goes around to meet the front connector that connects to the same part on the right side of the bike. I had a left side master cylinder leak and some of the brake fluid leaked on this part. Now that I have you totally confused, I guess I should ask my question. Question: What are the best painting steps to get as close the same color and finish as a new factory part? This part has only one color which is Urishi Black. I am planning on ordering one can of Urishi Black and one can of Clearcoat spray paint from ColorRite. I know I should probably use a primer as well. Does this fairing part need to be sanded to remove the clearcoat before applying the primer? Also, what would be a good filler to "fill-in" any nicks. However, if one of you happen to have this part with the Urishi black paint in really good shape and want to sell it, let me know your purchase price. In advance, thank you for all your responses and suggestions. Allen Dallas, Texas

  15. Well, we were gonna wait til spring, but last wed we went into knoxville. While we were in town we stopped at the Honda shop just for giggles. Next thing ya know, we're doing paperwork for an '08 wing. We pick it uo on the 17th. Pics to come shortly after that. As for the moneypit, I'm not going to part it out. I'm going to give it a coat of paint, and give it to my 25 year old son, who is a corrections officer in south georgia, so there will probably be another member on here fairly soon. Ya'll will get pics wed or thursday:mo money:
  16. Here's a few pics of our visit with Lowell. As well as a nice bike at our local dealer. Has a custom paint job on it. Jeff use to work with the guy that did the paint on the bike. Margaret
  17. WE SEEN THIS AT 29 DREAMS OVER THE WEEKEND. GREAT PAINT WORK! :mo money::mo money: MUST BE NICE?
  18. I got an email the other day and then spoke on the telephone to a company that does custom paint jobs. He was interested in purchasing a banner on our site. I talked to him for about 30 minutes on the phone and he seems to be very customer oriented. His work is NOT cheap. It is top notch and professional. I do think though that, based on quotes that I've received in the past, his prices are fair for the type of work that he does. I declined the offer to sell him a banner simply because I haven't seen a LOT of interest here for high end custom paint jobs and I didn't feel that it was a perfect match for our members and I am committed to not adding banners just for the sake of making money. I do think though that this is a reputable company and worth checking out if you really want a nice custom paint job. I spent some time looking through the pictures on his site and really like the work that they do. They have been featured in many custom motorcycle publications, also television on the Biker Build-off and many other places. Here is the link for anybody who is interested. http://www.airea5150.com/
  19. Took another long vacation? I got to get down there and get our 89. Wait maybe he took the 89? Looks like the 89 will be at Asheville. This 99 got some issues and just to much going on to do a rush job on the paint. The painter is leaving on vacation on his Harley anyway.
  20. As if I do not have enough things to do ! Earlier this week , the BEERCART sustained some scrapes and dings . Items I had suspending from my garage ceiling fell on top of her . Rather than repairing the damaged area , I chose to repaint it . Being I had paint left over from the birth of the BEERCART , I repainted it the same color . But this time I added the clear coat to it . Yesterday , I stripped her down , repaired the dings , masked her off . Repainted her this mourning and removed all the masking tape and paper . Though the paint isn't dry yet , I see that it is a closer match to the scoot . Tomorrow night , I will replace the spoiler back onto her , add a layer of rattle can bed liner to the front of her to help with the flying debris chipping her front side . Re-insulate the cooler and paint the bell-crank linkage I installed for the auto-opening lid . I had decals made this summer put onto the BEERCART . I had to remove them to repaint and they are not reusable . Thoughts of pin stripping or maybe even some air brushing on her . Decisions ....decisions ? I'll post pictures when I get her all back together . BEER30
  21. I need some advice...I have a guy painting my bike (actually repainting the trunk and saddlebag) and he is trying to strip them down, but the paint won't come off. He paints cars (and does good work) but hasn't dealt with plastic much...how can he strip the clear and paint off (quickly and easily) so he can start shooting paint? He has tries a few different strippers, but they aren't taking the paint off. Looking for some help to move this project along and help him not to send days trying to get the old paint off. Dave
  22. Called 2 Yama shops locally today but got no answer to my question. Actually, I was told parts dept was too busy and to call back. I am wanting to get the Wagner grill from Diamond R, but it only comes in black. I have no problem painting it to match my blue, but I am trying to find out if I can get some paint thru Yama or will I have to go to a paint shop and have it mixed? Anyone know? Thanks
  23. We are staying at a hotel in Parkersburg, WV. Yesterday morning I went out to the bike to find that somebody had keyed the top of my right saddlebag. Bad scratch about 4 or 5 inches long right across the top. Definitely too deep to polish out. Nine years of owning this bike and have managed to keep it pretty much scratch free the entire time. Really ticks me off. So, I guess I'll be looking for a new top of the bag and if I can't find one at a reasonable price, may just put the leather covers over them. I hope I can find one though. I know I could have it repaired but don't know that they would ever match the paint to my satisfaction.
  24. i am getting my new piggy backer thurs. i would like to paint it before i put it together the same color as my vr , has anybody painted one before ? did the paint stick ? what kind of primer did you use ? Thom
  25. My question is.......Can I take the plastic off my 83 VR and take it all to a regular auto body shop and get it painted? Is there any difference in having them paint it or is there some special motorcycle paint out there that is supposed to be used?
