  1. Hi guys, Nice forum! I am a new Venture owner and loving it! I just picked up a Gen 1 VR (86) and I could use some help finding a part. Overall the bike is in great shape but it was dropped by the previous owner and caused some fairing damage. http://www.raymondstacy.com/vr1.jpg I have spent the last few days checking Ebay, CL, Google and I haven't had any luck finding the piece. Any help that you can give me would be very much appreciated. Ray
  2. While I'm waiting on my coolant bypass-valve parts, Ill ask a question on another wore-out topic. Wasn't the 2nd gear issue on 1st gens fixed under a factory recall in the 80's, or under an extended warranty for that particular issue ? Or did the bike have to actually be experiencing the problem before they would fix it ? If it has been fixed in the past, is there any way at all to tell ? I bought my 83' about 8 years ago and am approaching 100k miles, fairly rigorous miles, most of them by me, and the tranny is as solid today as it was when I got it with 41k on it, so I am thinking that maybe 2nd gear was already done years ago by owner #1. Owner #2 only had it for a couple of years before selling it to me. He knew owner #1 and said that #1 had everything done on it by the dealer since day-one in 1983, even all his oil changes and tires, etc.... I am owner #3.
  3. Is the Lifetime updates for the device or for the person? What I am checking out is a GPS unit that the owner bought Lifetime updates (not you Bob :-)). If I buy the GPS from that person does the Lifetime updates go with that unit, or stay with the previous owner?
  4. Well, I went and switched to a GL1800, I've had it about 10 days now. Lower seat and center of gravity, a lot easier for me to handle, especially two-up. Maybe more about that later. Now to the subject of this thread. I signed on to a couple of Gold Wing forum sites, looking for hints, advice, places to buy safety chrome, etc. So I started a thread at this one site with the subject box content "Wingstuff.com". I proceeded to ask if anyone used them to buy goodies and what they thought about their prices, service, etc.--- Same kind of stuff we discuss here all the time. HAH! I got several decent responses, then all hell broke loose. It seems as though the reason that there is no membership fee (in other words free) is because the site is owned and paid for by a big aftermarket vendor. Yes, I said owned. They are a full blown "have almost everything" vendor. On the home page their banner shows as a sponsor, not "owner", with some smaller banner sponsors also shown. The smaller ones are not directly competitive with the owner, that is not allowed. They offer different goods and/or services. Now comes the good part. The moderator works for the vendor! So, along with him, several members unloaded on me for daring to mention a competitor on their site. After a lot of bantering, name calling and expressions of ill will, the thread got deleted. Some of the other members expressed some support for the "newbie" and some thought the others were way too harsh, but the end result is you must conform to their rules. My way or go away. Be very pleased and happy to pay your $12 a year and have a site that is "by the membership, for the membership"! This site occasionally has some minor conflicts and the boss has to step in, but believe me, this place is wonderful compared to what I have just experienced. I know that there are some really good guys on that site, but I ain't gonna be there. Congratulations to the members, moderators, and administrators of this site. An enjoyable place to visit. I have totally enjoyed being a member here. I'm done.
  5. An illustrated bailout plan that just might work... It is a slow day in the damp little town of Oberlin, Ohio. The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt and everybody lives on credit. On this particular day a rich Venture rider from Texas rides into town, stops at the local hotel and lays a $100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. The owner gives him some keys and, as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs, the hotelier grabs the note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the note and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the note and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed and fuel. The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the note and runs to pay his drinks bill at the pub. The pub owner slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him "services" on credit. The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner with the same note. The hotel proprietor then places the note back on the counter so the rich traveller will not suspect anything. At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, picks up the note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money and leaves town. No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looking forward to the next Venture rider maintenance day with a lot more optimism. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a bailout package works...
  6. Well today it happened. I was a little saddened watching the VR rolling away from me on a trailer with its new owner. Bike hasn't been started since August (it never even made the move to the new residence. It was still being stored at the old one). 40* in there and the engine fired right up. Looking through the pics i have of it is what got me. pics of my boy posing with the bike, riding it in his diaper & helmet when he was younger. Had some good memories on that old bike. Can't wait to see what the future holds in store. I'll be seeing it alot I think, the new owner asked if i had the tools to do work on the bike like syncing the carbs and such.....we'll see. Anyhow, just had to put it in 'print' I guess.
  7. After acquiring 2 identical 1985 Ventures 18 months ago as a project to help rehab my knees after total knee replacements in Late July 2009, I finally have a complete, good looking, great running Venture Royal. It has been an experience. The primary bike was completely torn apart and it took 3 truck loads to get it all home BUT it had only 13500 miles on a one owner bike but had not been run in over 8 years and the original owner gave it to his son who took it apart with the thought of putting the motor in a golf cart. He got bored with the idea and through a friend offered the bike to me just to get it out of the garage. Free is good! The second bike I found when looking for a manual, went to pick up the manual and the owner asked "what about the bike that goes with it?" The bike was complete BUT had not moved in over 10 years and sat under a pine tree outside uncovered for the whole time. Fortunately the owner had pulled the bags and trunk and stored them in the basement. $30 for the manual and the bike (which we had to dig out since it sunk down to the frame in the soft dirt) Mice had nested in a variety of areas including the air box and had eaten some of the harness but the bike was a great template for assembling the good bike and great for getting useable components and fasteners that were missing or damaged when the first bike was taken apart. Some of the major issues that needed to be dealt with: The carbs - having 2 complete sets of carbs helped. The biggest problem during the entire project was determining why I could not get consistent fuel flow to one cylinder, turned out to be a hairline crack in one of the carb bodies sucking air took forever to diagnose and correct. Front fork tubes needed to be replaced, both sets had pitting and were drawing fluid up when compressed went wit new tubes (Forking by Frank) at around half the price of OEM. Brakes needed serious attention. Biggest problem was finding a replacement rear master cylinder and the rubber diaphragm for the inside of the rear brake reservoir. Once all the components were acquired rebuilding the system was pretty straight forward except for the right front brake which refused to bleed for the longest time. The clutch needed attention but having 2 full sets of components got me a solid working clutch. I'm not a big fan of hydraulic clutch systems just due to the added complexity. Cables are so much easier to deal with. Once all the mechanicals were taken care of, the electrical system came next and generally went fairly well, mostly checking, cleaning and replacing but every thing works. Final repair and reassembly of all the body work completed the project. I was amazed at how fragile some of the mounting points on much of the plastic were but I was also amazed at how much of the mounting hardware and grommets were still available. Repairing the plastic was definitely a learning experience. Unfortuneately much of the plastic from the second bike was badly deteriorated from the years out in the elements so repairing the first bikes plastic that was damaged in disassembly became my only option. The end result is now a very nice, very good running and very good looking motorcycle as original as I can get it within a very limited budget. I'm not new to resurrecting old motorcycles but this bike had a level of complexity that I had not worked with before. Having worked on a VMax sure helped. I want to thank those on this forum who offered parts and assistance and the owners of theis group for having a place that offers so much technical information. Without this group, this project would not be possible. By the way the knees turned out better than the bike and now I have to figure out what to do with 4 large storage bins of leftover parts! I'll post some pictures as soon as I can get some taken. Thanks again
  8. Long story short, a licensed mechanic was fired at a bike shop that I had my neck bearings replaced and forks serviced at not long ago, by that mechanic.. All this came to a head after I had to remove the fuel tank from the bike this weekend to change my tach. He had so badly cross threaded the tank side mounting bolts that the shop owner had to come over and fix the threads on the bike so that I could re-install the tank to the bike.. no joke, the level of incompetence of a person to have to use that much ham fist torque to munge up those bolts.. my gosh.. I mean seriously, what is the thought process of that person as he's forcing those bolts in?? So badly munged were the bolts that they were BENT.. After a closer look, several other things were noticed not done right. The shop owner had fired the licensed mechanic for incompetence and other problems.. unfortunately my bike was one of the last bikes he'd worked on and now I'm worried. The shop owner, a much respected person for his upstanding character, without hesitation assured me he'll do what is needed to get my bike sorted out if there happens to be a problem with it.. One problem I discovered is that the air valves at the top of the forks point to the sides instead of to the rear of the bike.. I'm not sure if this is a very BAD thing, or just an annoyance thing. The shop owner said he would take the bike in, sort that problem out and check for anything else that might be amiss... Question is, does it make a large difference if the air valves point to the sides or to the rear? I can still get an air pump line to them.. there's enough room.. I feel bad for the owner, that one mechanic almost sank his shop with such incompetence..
  9. hey everyone, i would like to plan some meet and eats and short rides for my aera in nc for 2011. theres alot of senic roads in area and was wondering how many would be intrested in this. i also know the owner of the sleep inn in black mountain so if anybody would like to try this motel out next time theres an event in town just let me know.
  10. It went to a good home.It will get a complete makeover this winter. The new owner is a painter and has some {SPECIAL} plans for it.
  11. Well, let's start over, eh. Owner - 05 RSTD! :LIME:
  12. This afternoon the group I was riding with Stopped in Prescott, WI at Cabana Joe's. This trunkless (and badgeless) '04 was in the parking lot. I know there has been some discussion on the forum about this. I never did find the owner so I have no information other than these pics. Enjoy!
  13. I needed to replace the tire on the front of my RSTD and had done the rear tire about a month ago. I used the Michelin Comander and really like the tire so I ordered the same for the front. Shop just about 200 yards from me ordered one and I made arrangements to have it mounted first thing in the morning so I could go riding afterward. I got back from running errands and stopped to pick it up and the owner told me the sticker on the tire said it was a front but it turns out it was the back tire. So he called the dist and they didn't have any fronts in the comander. It seems they are coming out with a comander II and have run their stock out and there are none available anywhere. So the owner ended up ordering a Dunlop elite 3 which is about 30 bucks more but gave it to me for the same price. Mounted it and put the tire back on last night. I hope I like this tire. Headed to WV for a week of riding the roads down there.
  14. Hey this is Utadventure's son, I am now the proud owner of an 83 Venture Royal . I've been riding a Honda Silverwing for the last 2 years and have love every min of it. But alas I pulled a stupid and ended up seizing the engine on it. It was a sad moment cause it's a great little bike and you don't see to many of them out on the road. So after greiving for my loss I started looking for a new bike. After looking around for a week or so my dad found a blonde venture only about an hour away from us that the owner was willing to sell for 1k. The problems? A dead battery, minor damage to the plastic (nothing worse than the usual wear and tear), needs a new back tire, and the electronics were pulled out and he didn't know if they worked or not. He jump started me to get me home and the panel showed the bike putting out a solid 13~14V the entire way home. The trip charged the battery and the battery is holding the charge. The plastic I know how to fix and I'll probably repaint the bike after I'm done anyway (even though the paint still looks good enough for now). I've ordered a rear tire and after one night of fiddling with the electronics everything works. I had to curse the previous owner for the backwards and slapstick way he wired some things. (most of the night was spent just undoing previous "fixes" and redoing them so that they were more discrete and less likely to leave me stranded on the side of the road doing these same fixes.) But all and all, great deal for a 1000 bucks. As soon as I get the tire in I'll be riding it.
  15. I looked at an '87 VR with 50K miles on it today. Owner is asking $1200.00 dollars. I am tempted, but it has some "issues" that are obvious. First, it is beaten pretty badly. Plastic, vinyl, chrome, paint and metal pieces are all cracked, pitted, scraped, scarred, bent, gouged, loose, etc. They all seem to be in place, but they are pretty well abused and neglected. I kept looking though, because for the price I was more interested in the mechanical soundness of the bike than the cosmetics or looks. The owner cranked the bike and let it idle while we talked. The starter turned the engine over slowly, but it fired up quickly. The idle was rough, and it spit and sputtered for a moment after the start-up. The off-idle response was also noticebly sluggish when the throttle was twisted. I shut if off for a few minutes while the owner and I chatted about other things that needed attention. He told me the fork tubes were leaking, and would need serviced. He acknowledged they were probably empty of fluid after I easily squashed them all the way to the ground. He told me the bike had been tuned-up a year ago. Coulda fooled me. We also discussed how to remove the seat (he didn't know). I wanted to see if I could locate the source of an obviouse oil leak/seep. After a few minutes I started the bike up again, and it fired off pretty well. Twisting the throttle resulted in a sluggish (pathetic) throttle response. It gather RPM's rather slowly, and did not seem to have any umph off idle. It turned weakly while starting, but it did start. The owner later told me he had put a new battery in the bike this past spring. I have not ridden the bike yet. What things should I look for on this generation of Venture that might not be so obvious to the un-trained eye? If the owner will allow me to run it down the street I will go through the gears and see how the motor pulls and accelerates, runs at road speed, decelerates, etc. I also want to see if the thing will start, stop, hold a set speed, turn, track and other such important and interesting things. What should I expect to pay for fork seal replacement and fork service (and new Progressive springs?) for this rig? Are the brakes on the VR known to be durable/reliable? If there are carb problems on the Ventures are they a PIA to deal with? It has a oil weep somewhere on the back cylinder bank, as made visible by a considerable amount of gunk collecting on top of the rear engine case. Is this typical for a 23 year old Venture? Are the final drives on these bikes pretty durable, and do they give tell-tell signs if they are about to go out? Thanks for any input. If there other links or posts that addresses these issues, please advise. I would be glad to link to them; otherwise, I look forward to your replies.
  16. My time as a Venture owner, that is. Today the 99 that I had listed in the classifieds was picked up by its new owner, a real nice guy named Doug from the Joliet, IL area. I was sad to see her go, but I know that Doug will give her a good home. Doug said that he has been here on the site a couple times checking things out, and was very impressed. I encouraged him to join, I think he'd fit right in. He seemed to be the kind of guy I'd enjoy riding with. BTW, his 10 year old daughter was just as excited as he was. She's a cutie and said she can't wait to go riding with Dad. Doug, if you're lurking let us know. Joe
  17. I had a 08 Polaris Sportsman 500 atv. It was ok and did the job pushing snow, but it wasnt quite what I wanted. I decided to start pricing a side by side instead. So after some investigating and some research, the fun began. To make a long story short, I am the owner of a 09 Kawasaki Teryx. This thing is a blast. Oh and by the way, got a good deal to boot.....
  18. what a great story. did you miss that thread? anyway - what's your story on how you got your bike? lets hear yours! here is how we wound up back on 2 wheels - - - It is sat morn last fall. i got Lady Massey and daughter massey setup for the community garage sale. i am sitting back in my chair in the shadow of the neighbors truck sipping my coffee. Deb comes up to me not long after i have yawned a couple times thinking "another day setup at a garage sale". she said "are you gonna look around?" I seez no cause i might find some junk i can't live without. she smiles and seez "did u see that motorcycle over there" I said "course not, i ain't looking for nuttin, besides, if it's nice and cheep, you know i will wind up with it!" She seez "Well, you better make your way over there an' check it out". i get up and she points it out. well i didn't know much about ventures at the time, but it was a nice white 04 RSV. sign on it says 6500 OBO. I knock on the door and the owner comes out and we chit chat bout this that an the other. we go over the bike. very clean & all maint done. purrs like a kitten with good tires. didnt know what it meant then, but no chirp or whine. i ask just OBO number he has in mind. well, it was a good bit lower. i said i will take it, but I don't have cash, so i ask if we can deal on monday after i call the bank. he said to let him know what the bank says. we part and i go tell Deb how it went. she has been watchin and while i did not see, there was a lady taking pictures on one phone and talking to hubby on another phone. deb said i may want to put down some holding cash or that lady is gonna swoop the bike out from under us. I go back over, knock on the door and the owner comes back out. I let him know i am solid at the bank and feel there will be no problem, but i want to seal the deal with a few hundred bucks to hold it. he looks around, sticks out his hand. i shake it and he says, that's good enough for me, its yours. not many folks work off hand shakes anymore. i still do and you just get that feelin sometimes. It's not even 7:30 AM & we are in his back yard at this point. we come around by the bike, i walk on across the street to meet Deb and the owner flips up the kick stand and starts to walk it back to his shop. the lady comes up to him and says " YOU SOLD IT ALREADY?????" the owner says "yes M'aam" she was sooo busy working details on the phone with hubby she did not take my presence seriously. anyway, the following tuesday, I had title and keys in hand and a grin a cheep carwash couldn't scrub off my face. my last bike was a used first year Kawa 1100 Ninja back in 1988 that i sold in 1990. what a difference in how motorcycles handle. i have had to learn how to ride all over again. yes, it was a steal of a deal.
  19. Hello to all, new owner of a 89 Venture located in Greenville, SC area. Bought the bike so the wife and I can ride 2 up. Also current owner of a 95 Yamaha XV750 Virago. Looking forward to learning all I can from this site. My Venture is a basic rider now, but after this riding season I may really get into it and repair a lot of things that need repairing. Just want to ride now. Took it out yesterday for the first time (on the highway, been riding around the neighborhood to learn the bike). Man these things are quick!!! Any other Venture riders in the Carolina's? Also be patient with me as I learn this site as well. Have a new windshield coming, any tips on replacing? Windshield is coming with a new gasket. Thanks, Don
  20. My bike for some reason came without the CB unit under the trunk and no CB antennae. Why it was like that, I have no idea. I can only assume the original owner took it off for some reason, but never gave it to the 2nd owner (who I bought it from). I can't seem to find these things anywhere, radios aren't too hard to find, but the CB unit is. So just wondering if someone might have one they could part with or know where to look? 2006 RSV. Also looking for the passenger grab handles as well.
  21. OK, I pm'd Mike and he got right back to me with the information I needed to find the first owner of my 2007 RSV. THANK YOU MIKE!!! Seems it was bought new in Illinois, traded in Indiana at a Harley dealer for a trike. I couldn't talk to the first owner until today 02-14-2010, I think they were screening their calls, finally decided to talk to me on the phone. All that I learned is positive, seems like it was properly maintained. Rear tire has only about 1,000 miles on it. I think I got a good one at a good price. Thanks again Mike. Mel:Venture:
  22. My new used '07 RSV has been home now for a couple of weeks. It has just about the exact same goodies that I would add if I had the $ to buy and equip new. Passing lamps and light bar, nice chrome radiator grill cover, saddle bag guard rails, and travel trunk rack. 18,500 miles on it, got it for $10,800. I got it from a big Honda dealer here in Indianapolis, and they also have a Yamaha dealership. The sales guy said he thought they might have gotten it from a Harley dealership. I asked if there was any way to find the previous owner, maybe through the VIN. Was told no way. I am curious if any of you have ever been able to do some detective work and find any info. like this. It would be nice to find out about maintenance, warranty repairs etc. I thought of carfax, but I don't think their reports include prior owners.
  23. Thanks to all the help we're getting, the new shop is taking shape. CdnDave helped out a lot with building a loft in the garage attached to the house, so that I would have permission to do some reno in the shop for better accommodations. Wizard765 has been very busy pulling wires from here to there and arguing with the owner,,,, usually the owner let;s him have his way. Son Allan came down to help out raising the loft 18" so it was more usable. No pictures, but Arnold, a freind, came down with a new insulated sectional door and installed it. All in all, a lot done so far. Thanks guys. Now that you found it, guess you're welcome anytime.
  24. At the Toronto International Bike Show today, I saw an 05 RSV with a Voyageur trike kit. It was in amazing condition, with only 1750 miles on it. I talked with the current owner who said it was owned by the proverbial "little old lady who had health problems". Apparently, her husband had the identical bike/trike. The owner is asking $13,500 obo. Don't know whether that is a good price (especially here in Canada as new RSV's are over $20,000 at the show. Also don't know whether these trike kits work well. Apparently it is easily removable so the RSV can be rode with or without it or it could be sold if there is a market for these. Interested in opinions on these kits as well as the price. Also, I have the guys contact info if others are interested. I have tried to attach some pics.
  25. I was leading a group of about 15 bikes this last weekend on a fall river/color (late, few leaves left on the trees, this is important) tour and ran into the results of a dumb property owner. I had done a pre-ride the night before, so we were on the road less than 20 hours after it was deemed clean and safe. Rounded a turn on a particularly curvy section (thus, this road is probably a favorite of bikes all summer long, even though I had just discovered it 20 hours before!) and found the ENTIRE LANE cover at least 2" thick with leaves. Luckily, even though I had run the road, I didn't know it that well, and was going pretty slow (leading) and I got on the CB (most riders had CB and we had been communicating all along) because a hand or foot signal would not be seen by other than the one bike behind me and he was already in the leaves! The leaves were dry thank goodness or it could have been worse. After I realized I was going to make it, and the alert had been sent, I looked and saw that the ditch was perfectly clean on that side of the road. Well howdy! How nice of the property owner to intentionally make a road dangerous just so a ditch (that wasn't even in front of the house, but well off to the side) could be clean. In thinking about it in the 36 or so hours since, I have come to the conclusion that this owner did this intentionally, putting the leaves in the road right after a curve to wreck some motorcycles or less likely, to slow and wreck some cars. He almost succeeded with our group, but since I was slow to begin with, only one bike without CB had a wiggle and everyone made it through safe. I was embarrassed, even though there was nothing I could have done to avoid the situation that I could think of, short of pre-riding the route 10 minutes before, and even then it wouldn't be a sure thing! We were single file, at a very reasonable speed, below the speed limit, and spaced pretty well. Those things saved us some skin and chrome I am sure. One last thought, I am tempted to call the county police and report this homeowner. I am sure there is some rule about debris being thrown on public roads. I own a bit of property that fronts a city street, and won't throw grass clippings or leaves on the road or over the curb. I see this all the time in the country though, and it ticks me off every time, even if I am in a car, because I am always thinking bike safety. This happened in Illinois, any Illinois police (or other police) have thoughts on reporting this property owner?
