  1. Hey Y'all, I've had a persistent problem with engine rpm-related noise in the radio and intercom, both thru the speakers and headsets. I've posted here and there on the subject. I had the noise improve a little when I improved the grounding on the bike. But it was still significant. Well, I just pretty much fixed it. The factory has 3 noise-reducing capacitors installed: two in the radio noise filter (one for system hot, the other for battery back-up (hot all the time)), and the third near the voltage regulator. Each cap goes from hot to ground and bleeds off noise (AC signal) but doesn't short out the DC power. They say caps dry out and don't work as well as they age. Well, mine are 22 years old! So I went to Radio Shack and bought two 2200 microfarad caps and one 4400. I then bought two more 2200's after I nearly blew one up and ruined them by wiring them in backward and then yanked them out when I heard the gurgling - live and learn :-) I put the 4400 near the regulator and the 2200's at the radio near the existing noise filter, and wired them as I said, from hot to ground. The noise is nearly gone - not completely, but I wonder if the remaining noise could be normal as it's very small. Certain things increase it, as they did before, but on a lower level: Setting the Headphone Attenuator on the handlebar at Max gives a little noise that almost goes away if I set it on the big dot just below Max. The Auto Volume circuit introduces noise. If I have it all the way down it goes away, and it increases steadily as I turn this feature more sensitive. There's a slight hiss in the system even with the engine off - just par for the course I guess. If I crank the Auto Volume and the Headphone Attenuator both up to Max, the noise is still less than what I had before with much more conservative settings. As long as music is playing, I cannot hear the noise at all. In totally quiet times and with the knobs set to contain the noise, I still can't hear it unless I'm REALLY trying. I'm very pleased, been waiting 3 years to do this! The caps are about 5 bucks each, whether you fry them or not! Very good solution. Thanks to GeorgeS for suggesting it! Jeremy
  2. This was addressed in the 1st gen folder, but decided to put it here since it is happening with my 07. Tonight after I got home from work, I noticed a slight "rumble" noise when I pulled in the garage when I put it in neutral and let the clutch lever out. Did not sound like throwout bearings. Only hear it when in neutral without the clutch engaged. No slipping, shifts normally, but it is just loud enought that the wife even heard it. If I take it to the stealer, are they going to tell me to pay because clutch is a wear item and not covered? Bike is only 2 years old with 21,000 miles.
  3. I did a search for noise with transmission in neutral and found a couple of concepts about the noise source but just not sure what I'm looking at labor wise. Wondering what the most likely source of noise is. Working on a 1987 XVZ13DTC with 60000 miles. The bike is running great right now but I can hear a rumble that goes away in neutral with the clutch pulled in. When the clutch is let out in neutral the rumble comes back . It' not loud but it is there. Using a stethoscope I can hear the rumbling loudest near the oil fill plug. When the clutch is pulled in the noise is gone completely and everything is smooth. It sounds like a bearing rumble. Clutch works great no binding, grabbing slipping or other nonsense. Shifts great and clutch lever engages at the bottom almost as if the clutch is a newer one. (The bike is new to me) I am wondering what the most likely culprit is and how critical you guys think this might be and how soon it should be fixed. Biggest concern is that it is the ball bearing behind the clutch on the output of the transmission.(Part #8 in the transmission picture.) I saw the pictorial tech post here of a member who removed his engine to split the cases and replace the 30.00 bearing because the cage folded on the bearing behind the clutch basket and disintegrated leaving all the balls bunched up inside the two races. Or could it more likely be the clutch bearing itself? (#17 in the picture of the clutch assembly)
  4. I have noticed over the last 3 to 5 years the fan belts seem to make noise after a short time frame. The last two or three that I have bought and installed, they started squeaking or making a little noise after several weeks to several months. If you spray them with say WD40, or let a bar of soap rub against the belt, they quiet right down and several days later you start to hear them agaim. Mostly when they are cold or just started. The surpentine belts is what I'm referring to. A few years back you only replaced a belt when it was cracked however the last couple I did it was for noise. I remember using belt dressings years ago but don't see that like you use to. Anybody else have this issue and what have you done? Thanks. Spotsy
  5. 2001 RSV with 13000 miles. Whirl, whine @ all speeds even 20mph. Its not in the rear, but I can hear it louder near the front center of the bike. The noise quits when I pull in the clutch. That confirms a driveline issue. Sounds like a bad bearing, maybe the one at the front of the driveshaft. I thought by adding the Samson pipes I wouldn"t hear it but no luck. I replaced both tires & lubed the rear hub. This sound is driving me crazy. Anybody out there have success fixing this problem? Could it be the u-joint worn?
  6. I've got that dreaded rearend noise again! Just put a new rear tire on in Oct. and greased everything really well. This about the 4th time. I ride in rain quite often but that shouldn't make a differance. Anybody else have the same problem?
  7. Snow and ice that is......... Temps in the low 50's. We had good rainfall last night that washed away a lot of the road sand too. Even the hayfield around my house is showing a bit of green. What's that noise? Oh, its my scoot calling to me for a ride.......... Boomer......geared up and heading out........
  8. just put my secound I basket in and it still makes the same noise. that sucker still screams at about 24-32 hundred rpms. it is even lowder than the g basket i took out . I wish i had a H basket to put in or a p-q-r-m-or somthing to stop the noise lol. and on top of that my shock just started leaking, and my guy at the dealer said he had to have my bike long enough to take picture of shock -send it in before they would send another to us. he said this takes about 2 weeks??? O- O-what will i do for 2 weeks??
  9. After my 2000 Venture was totaled I bought 2003 to replace it. The 03 had a whine that I knew was probably the notorious clutch whine. As I rode it more and more I figured out that it was definitely a rear end noise not clutch. I took it to 3 diff dealers and was told clutch basket. The dealer I liked best for the fix told me that would help but not fix the noise. I assured him I would not settle with that knowing I had 86k on bike that was totaled with zero noise. I told him I didn't want him or any dealer doing it if they were promising that it would not fix it! To shorten this long story a little......Yamaha got back to him and told him....WE DON"T HAVE A REAR END PROBLEM WITH THE VENTURE BUT.....If he don't mind taking it to dealer in Seymour In. he could fix the problem and they would pay him to fix the problem it does'nt have! I live 3hrs from there in Ohio but always up for a ride...Gen II Yamaha's deny needing any shims because of great machine tolerances......The Dealer is Dan's Cycle Sales Yamaha and they build Venture and other Yamaha trikes. I was told that the Venture Trikes they convert would lose the Yamaha whine when the rear diff was gone. Within an hour I watched him take it apart and shim it and then test ride it. Gary ask me to test ride it too....I came back hating to tell him that the noise was much less but still their....but he was on the phone and I had to wait to tell him......when off the phone he ask me what I thought and I told him....He then told me he was on the phone with Yamaha getting auth. to install new rear end......DONE FIXED NO NOISE I did learn from watching him how he figures the amount of shim needed to fix most whines. 10. Anybody else ever have a problem with their tach making noise? At first I thought my speedo needed to be greased again. I greased the speedo and the noise was still there. It would come and go but not stay gone. Then I noticed that when I engaged the clutch when going down the road the noise stopped. I hit the throttle and it came back. Then I had a "DUH!" moment and realized it was the tach making the annoying noise.
  11. My RSV has developed a knocing noise in the engine. I'm affraid that it is a rod, The Yamaha dealer in Titusville, FL thinks that it might be also. I asked him if it was covered under my warranty. Which expires March 18th this year. He said that he would have to call Yamaha. He called me backe yesterday and told me that I would have to start a work order and that they would have to tear into it and see what it is before Yamaha would agree to anything. Never had a problem with the bike before, so I don't know if this is a normal thing with Yamaha or not. I took it back to the place where I have all the oil changes. He asked me to because if it was something that they did, he wanted to stand behind it, and would pay for everything and give me a lifetime of oil changes free. His top machanic, who also raced bikes for Yamaha, said that it either was the "chain basket" (What every that is) or the "cam chain tensioner", (I don't know what that is either. does that tell you how much I know about engines) I wanted to know if anyone else has had problems like I am having? If so, what they found it out to be. Thanks, Ken, 1 - UP
  12. I posted a few weeks ago regarding the edsets adapter I ordered so I can use ear buds with the intercom. The adapter works fine but I used a set of ear buds my wife uses with her mp3 player. The ticking of the engine noise was so loud it was unbearable. Well today I went to wal mart and bought a pair of KOSS noise isolating earbuds for $24.88. There is absolutely no engine noise in these earbuds. I never thought that the type of earbuds would make a difference. There is one aggravating thing about the KOSS earbuds. One earbud has a wire that is 6" long and the other earbud wire is 22" long. Why is this?
  13. I bought the universal adpater from edsets so I can use earbuds with the intercom system on my bike. The sound is excellent but I can't stand the clicking noise of the engine. With the regular intercom connection I can hear the noise but it isn't loud enough to cause a problem. With the earbuds with the adapter the noise is so loud it drives my crazy. I've read on here where you can move the wires around under the tank and sometime the noise will go away. Which wires under the tank do you move to correct this and are there any other ways to stop the clicking? Thanks, Eddie
  14. I have an 06 RSTD and the right side quick release doesnt sit tight enough (the keeper catches over the post but loose) so if i hit a bump it vibrates and makes noise. The left side holds on that round piece nice and snug. Does anyone know how to adjust the windshield mounts so that windshield keeper is tighter to that post? Thank You Hope i explained this well enough.
  15. hope someone can help me woith this one because it sure has me puzzled. My 84 venture has recently started making a buzzing or very loud humming noise that seems to be coming from the dash area behind the tach and spedometer. the noise starts usally when the bike gets just above 40mph and stops when you slow the bike to near a stop. I can place my hand on the dash when it starts and can feel the vibration from the buzzing it is very frustrating and it does it most of the time but not all the time. ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY
  16. Hey guys, help me out here. I haven't been around any other Ventures to compare my bike to so I need some help deciding if I have noise issues that can be improved on. My '07 has a fairly loud (at certain RPM's) but very tolerable gear whine. Or it sounds like a gear whine. I can't say that I have heard a "chirp". Now, what I call a "whine' is an even continuous noise. Where a "Chirp" is a series of spaced noises like a spot on a wheel or clutch basket rubbing on every revolution. I've read a lot of threads on this and it seems some people call chirps whines and whines chirps. LoL And some posts make me think that the 'I' basket fix will help the whine when it fixes the chirp. So, I have a whine that varies by speed. Will the 'I' basket do me any good? It would be warrantied but I don't want someone else tearing it apart if it isn't the fix for the noise that I have. Thanks for any replies!
  17. I have an '87 VR. The last few weeks I have started getting what I would describe as an exhaust noise getter progressive louder....it has now stopped getting louder but is still there...it's not REAL louder but definitely louder then it should be. When sitting on the bike it sounds like it's coming from the left front area. Inspected the bike today...no obvious holes or leaks in the exhaust. When I'm off the bike the noise sounds like it's coming from the right side......found the clamp holding the rear muffler section to the front pipe was loose and missing the bolt. Took that apart and cleaned everything, put in a new bolt and snugged everything up......didn't solve the problem at all. Could it be a carb diaphragm causing that sort of noise? I am starting a home renovation project in the next week so I don't want to get into too much on the bike right now....was thinking more of a winter project. Any ideas?
  18. Hi- I have an 06 RSTD, trying to install a CB and an intercom. TOO much ignition, alternator and fuel pump noise. How have you solved this problem? Are there any filter kits available or do I need to do it myself? Helmets with J&M headsets are also used with another m/c, radio is Cobra handheld, intercom is Air Rider.
  19. I was wandering if I could get some feedback about how to eliminate background noise such as engine whine and wind noise in my headsets? It seems like the noise at times is worst than others. I have read earlier about some riders using the product made by Mic-Mutes. Is this the best thing to use or is there other things I might need to do? Thanks:mustache:
  20. I have the head sets for the half helmet and my wife headset gets alot of wind noise. Mine not so much I have the windshield to block mine but as you all know she sits up above it. Just wondered if they made a larger foam wind blocker than the one that comes on them. Or if any of you have some home remedy to fix it. Just curious if not thats ok too. So everyone ridr a lot cause winters a comming. Thanks Quicksilver
  21. Hi All! I don't know whether this is the right place to post, or not... I apologize in advance for the length of the post. Anyway, I am looking at the possibility of buying a black 2002 Midnight Venture and am trying to learn a bit more about it. It is pretty well loaded chrome-wise but I don't think there have been any mods other than aftermarket exhaust (which I didn't like and would return to stock). The previous owner scooped out the seat and I would have to get an original since I am 6'3". Kury grips would replace the stockers. I have been riding a 2004 Roadstar for the past year and a half and have put quite a few miles on it. The Roadie is a great cruiser but lacks something for touring. Bag space, comfort and amenities ensure that any longer trips are solo - wife isn't happy riding any distance. The bike I'm considering has 36000 km on it (~23000 mi). Paint is in reasonable shape but needs a good buffing. Overall condition seems to be pretty good but I don't really know what to look for in terms of potential problems. The previous owner spent some money on bling but I don't think he really maintained it properly - maybe he didn't know how or just didn't bother. I'll be getting the service and warranty records from the dealer so I should be able to find out whether the appropriate routine service was done! It does make a bit of a ringing noise in the clutch area at certain RPMs but I understand that this is VERY common and not particularly a problem (other than an annoyance). 1) Is there any reasonable fix for the clutch noise? 2) How difficult is it to adjust the carbs (syncing etc)? 3) Any recommended aftermarket (non-cosmetic) improvements (i.e. the Roadstar benefited greatly with an aftermarket breather (Baron BAK) and rejetting) Anything similar for the Venture? 4) Any issues to look out for with respect to the engine, cooling system, shaft drive etc. (Major mechanical) 5) Suspension issues or bearings? 6) Specific maintenance issues other than the usual - brakes, tires, oil, chasis lube... 7) Comments regarding comfort, noise, vibration etc compared to the R* (or other tourers like the HD Ultra Classic) 8) How is the "fit" for distance riding for someone who is less compact than most? (Tall with long legs) Would highway pegs be an important addition? How's the amount of room for the passenger? 9) What's the nicest bit of bling to add? A new (to me) bike needs a little present to feel welcome in a new home! 10) Anything else I should know??? I really like the idea of a touring bike that still looks like a motorcycle. While a Wing may be in my future, it will wait for a few years! Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions. Also posted at Delphi - never hurts to get as wide a variety of opinions/comments as possible! Ross
  22. Greetings, I am not sure if this has been covered before. I have a 2000 RSV. Went out for a ride this afternoon did not get to the end of block and I could here a rubbing noise from the back axle.it was not constant but with every turn of the tire it faded in and out. I was wondering if any body might have any ideas what it might be???? Oil in axle is fine. thanx..
  23. I had a scraping noise on my '84 Venture earlier this sping. It was suggested that I clean and grease the driveshaft. Did that and it was needed. I thought maybe the noise seemed to go away but now its back. I can feel a scrape (in the floorboards) when I am crawling forward in first gear. Does my driveshaft need to be done again ? What about the U-joint ? Has anyone had this problem and traced it to a bad U-joint ? Any other ideas ?
  24. AFter a recent tear down of my '86 Royale, I am getting engine noise through the headsets. I can "hear" the spark of the engine. Might my noise filter be toast? I made sure I routed everything the way it was, and the ground good too. Any suggestions? I had a crystal clear intercom/radio/CB until this, and it's pretty frustrating! Any help would be appreciated

    Clutch Noise?

When I let the clutch out from a complete stop I hear a clunk noise that I can't tell if it's coming from the clutch assembly area or the drive shaft area. I don't hear the noise any other time when I'm riding. The clutch isn't slipping and other than the clunk when I start out everything seems fine. The engine has around 39,000 miles on it. Is this a normal noise or do I need to get to the shop?
