  1. A friend of mine has a '05 RSTD. When you turn the handlebars all the way left or right there is a popping noise from the stearing head. Could it be lack of greese or just wornout bearings. He says the bike handles fine. tew47
  2. Following is for anyone's FYI ... feel free to comment. Email I sent to Yamaha Customer Service Dept I have a 2006 RSMV. It has an extremely annoying whine/chirp coming from the clutch basket. I have had a local dealer install an "I" basket under warranty. This has not corrected the problem. The dealer told me that it could only be done one time regardless of whether it corrected it or not. This is not satisfactory to me. I have been in contact with many other RSV/RSMV owners who have had it replaced several times until they got a basket that reduced the whine/chirp to an acceptable level. I would like to know if Yamaha will look after this problem for me. Response I received I am writing in response to your e-mail regarding your RSMV Yamaha motorcycle. Yamaha introduced this model to critical acclaim. I can record your concerns but based on the information you provided I would encourage you to continue driving and enjoying your motorcycle without hesitation. All motorcycles have inherent, and different, engine noises. We have, in some cases, replaced clutch baskets and in many cases the noise remains unchanged, and in some cases increases the noise. These models have an inherent engine noise that is considered normal and may be augmented by the type of helmet a person wears or accessories they have on the motorcycle. Do you wear a half helmet? We consider this to be a characteristic of this model and would not repeatedly change clutch baskets. Your comments will be kept on file if you send me your serial number and you will be contacted in the unlikely event that time, and product monitoring, indicate this issue requires further investigation. Sincerely, Yamaha Motor Canada Ltd. Scott Harrison Manager, Consumer Relations
  3. If you have been following the MotorKote tracking and comments thread, you know that I have purchased an I basket to replace on my own. My RSV is a 99....Yamaha has a good warranty, but 10 years is probably asking a bit much to have them replace a basket now. Anyway, my bike was purchased in June through ebay. I did not ride it prior to purchase. When I picked it up, it had the worst whine/chirp/scream of any bike I've ever heard. Friends commented on it all the time....they could hear it while riding in a group with me. So, I decided to pony up the bucks and replace it. MotorKote removed or quieted probably 50% or so of my noise. At that level it was still unbearable. My parts finally all arrived today, and I reassembled the bike this evening. Then went for a 20 minute ride. And.......THE CRICKETS ARE DEAD! I absolutely am stunned at the difference. No scream, no chirp....maybe just a hint of a whine if you listen for it. What a wonderful ride it was....I soon found myself just enjoying the beautiful evening and the cool air blowing on my uncovered arms...realized that I wasn't even thinking about a noise anymore! I would not have believed it. To be honest, I had doubts about whether this would help. Others have had theirs changed and it either didn't help, helped only slightly, or just moved the noise to a different RPM range. I am tickled to report that I no longer have a Chirper or Whiner. Just a normal sounding engine. Thank the good Lord above..... If anyone decides to go this route and change their basket themselves, please contact me. I have some "life lessons" to share with you.....as well as necessary tools if you need them. Those of you fighting Yamaha over this issue....PERSIST!!! There is no way that your noise is "normal" or a "characteristic" of this engine. I wish you could have heard mine when I first got it and could hear it now. WOW. Joe :big-grin-emoticon:
  4. I have a 2007 RSV. When I hit a certain bumps on the road I get a loud bang from inside the fairing. It is not all bumps just ones that seem to have a sharp drop to it. I have changed the air pessure in the front forks anywhere from 0 to 5 psi and it doesn't make a difference. I have removed the front fairing and cannot find anything loose or broken. I did notice that the headlight assembly is spring mounted and does make a little noise but I don't think this is the problem. Does any one else have this problem?
  5. does anyone have an extra speedometer for an 83 venture? and if so how much?? if i take mine out and grease around the shaft, will the noise stop.. thefirst time that it made noise, i thought that it was the wheel bearing.. but it turned out to be the speedo..
  6. I have the engine wine at medium speed and higher I put up with it cause I was on a harley.... But I do notice that when I put on the front brake I get a noise mostly when I come to a complete stop and I squeeze a little harder.. Does anyone else have this problum RonaldE:12101:
  7. I purchased a New 2009 RSV and just got back from my first road trip (300 miles one way.) I now have 2000 miles on this bike in a month. When I was 40 miles from home I noticed a grinding/scrapping noise coming from my rear end, knowing about the infamous dry pins I didn't think anything of having to remove the rear wheel and lube the pins. When I got home I put it up on a jack, removed the rear wheel and checked the rear end lash, than I started it up with no rear wheel and shifted it through the gears to check out my tranny for problems just in case. I couldn't believe the noise coming from the trans in 5th gear, it sounded like it was flying apart. I didn't have any trouble shifting or keeping it in gear and the original noise was coming from my rear wheel. I lubed the pins and 4 were dry, lubed the teeth on the drive and reassembled it, torqued everything per spec's, than I took it for a test run and all's quite for now no noise's of any kind. Should I be concerned about my trans sound I heard with the wheel off in 5th?
  8. Wow . . I now know why this site helps each other with tech issues. I am on vacation (went from Ocala, FL to Lewisburg, VA) and on my way back I started to hear the rubbing/grinding/whooshing noise from rear end. I know there has been many posts hear for that but mine is an 089 and I thought it should be warranty. Stopped at the dealer in Columbia, SC and was tied up for a couple of hours. The "Master Mechanic" that was supposed to be so great rode the bike and did hear the noise. He put it on the rack and supposedly lubed everything and inspected everything and said they couldn't find anything wrong but I still have the noise and they knew it. But they said it was safe to ride. Also they charged me $109.00 for not being able to claim warranty because Yamaha wouldn't pay for a non repair. So basically I guess I paid they money to be told "we're to stupid to find the problem". Hopefully my dealer in Ocala will be a little more honorable about it. I can't remember the dealers name in Columbia but there are 2 and they are both owned by the same people. So beware in Columbia. (I know I sound bitter but $109.00 is a lot to me to be thrown in the garbage!
  9. Ok, here's my newest problem. The guy that I bought my bike from had installed an aftermarket radio. I didn't like the look so about two months ago I installed the OEM radio in my 83' standard. I wanted the classic look back and I enjoy that feature that allows the volume to deminish when you slow down. Anyway...From the beginning I had problems with powered antenna on the bike. I've never been able to get a strong enough signal. Not a big deal at this point, because I'm just using my little iPod and enjoy the tunes. But, for the past couple of weeks it's been developing a buzzing noise coming through the speakers. At first it wasn't anything too bad. But now its really loud. It only seems to happen upon excelleration, and continued riding. If I come to a stop the noise becomes only moderat. I've tried unplugging the iPod (which I'm just running through the tape deck with an adaptor.) and that doesn't change anything. I've tried using the radio. Nada. Same problem. I've tried taking everything appart and checking connecting. Everything is tight and appears to be connected correctly. I'm wondering what I may be missing. Oh, BTW, this noise comes through the speakers even is the radio isn't turned on. Hope someone can help. This is really bumming out my rides. Thanks
  10. MY '87 has a mild noise noticed when checking air in the read tire. 1st I have owned this for 20 years. This noise is new and I do hear the normal ring and pinion noise typical for 70k when spinning by hand. I have Spectro SPL 75w140 ($15/QT) in it, GREAT GEAR OIL. Along w/ the ring & pinion I hear this new noise when I spin the tire by hand, I hear a "creek" similar to an old door on your house closing or opening. Spin it fast...not noticable. Thus it cannot be heard while driving. The sound is very mild(not loud) but ODD. Any thoughts on maybe this is a wheel bearing or not. Yes, It makes this noise in both directions of rotaion. One way a bit more noticable that the other. The wheel shows no side play. I also have a new u-joint in it and the noise is clearly from the rear wheel area. My mechanics stethoscope says so. And no vibes can be felt while spinning by hand. Any input is helpful.
  11. I'm hearing a squeaking noise when compressing the rear shock. I searched for any leak, but everything is dry for now. Not sure if it is the rear shock or a bushing making the noise I hear. I know the rear shock has been a weak point on the Second Gens. It has 25K miles on it so its probably about time. Its not a high pitch squeak, but more of a low pitch rubbing noise. Is this the shock about to go?
  12. Have an 09 Tour Deluxe and have a rattle noise coming from the clutch. Kind of sounds like the noise you would hear from the engine from using low octane gas. Asked the dealer about and their answer was that it is common with these bikes. Said something about the plates in the clutch blah blah blah he started talking over my limited mechancial abilities. Was wondering if any one else has this noise and if they did what they did to get it fixed. Love the bike but would love to quite down the noise. Attached is a tech notice about 07 models about the primary driven gear damper changed on 08's from a rubber cushion to a spring type to reduce and I would assume they stayed on that course for the 09's or should I? Any suggestions?
  13. here we go with another problem... man you folks are patient. Anyhow I've got a lot of static in my headsets. Enough that we don't want to use them. It is engine noise because it changes with the rpm of the engine. I have an 84 which did not come with a C/B and have fitted one from a 90. What I'm hearing is the Mark II's have a noise filter. I have one that I picked up but cannot find anywhere that it plugs in. So the question is.. Where does it plug in. Maybe my bike is missing that plug in the harness. Is there a diagram that I could follow to wire this up somehow. I'm running out of ideas. I pulled all the wires out of the bike and ran them across the top to eliminate the proximity to high tension wires. No help. I pulled the stator wires out and got them away from the frame. Didn't help. I'm really hoping a filter will help. OK guys and gals... I'm hoping someone out there can help me get this figured out. Wayne
  14. My 2007 Venture with 18,000 miles has developed a strange noise. Sounds like its coming from the motor. Not very loud. 5 or 6 times then quite, and then 5 or 6 times then quite, etc. The noise is a lite knock. Clutch in or out. When I raise the idle speed it's hard to hear, but I don't know if it's gone. At first I thought maybe a fuel pump noise, half clogged filter? I going to take it to a Dealer tomorrow, but I thought maybe someone else has had this.
  15. Thought I would run this by some of you... I just did an oil change and decided to switch to Amsoil 20W-50 and new filter. Started it and Drove it about 3 miles, shut it off and it set for a little while, when I restarted it, the engine started tapping (like valve noise). No engine oil light came on, but noise went away after about 30 seconds... Oil level was at the top of the fill mark (with engine off). Never did this with Dino oil, just wondered what caused it to start the loud ticking noise.... Sounded like it was coming more from the front of the engine. It did do it again, but not as loud and not as long.... anyone ever experienced this happening to them ?
  16. Well....my radio seems to not keep the volume all the time. I understand when the noise around the bike gets louder the radio increases in volume. Seems like sometimes it does not keep the volume when I am out by myself. Any thoughts????
  17. Sunday I was out for a ride with another couple, I was on my 06 Venture they were 2 up on a RSTD. It was sunny and 24 degrees Celsius. We rode for a good hour before stopping and when we did I could hear a noise coming from his bike. I asked him what the noise was and he said the cooling fan. It then occurred to me that I have never heard my fan come on and it got me wondering. So today I checked the fuse and it was ok, so I asked a Yamaha service manager and he told me that’s not unusual and that it takes a lot before the fan comes on. I’m wondering what other 2nd gen riders experience with your bikes, do you hear your cooling fan kick in and what’s the temperature around the engine like when it does? Does it make a difference when you ride 2up? When you stop after a run is your fan running? Perhaps I should test my thermostat and temperature sensor??
  18. I have a 2000 Royal Star Venture Millenium model. I bought some basic J+M headset units advertised as fitting the bike's factory audio sytem but the mic's are always "on" so I get an awful lot of wind noise transmitting into our ear pieces via the microphones. I even hear my own voice in my earpieces when I talk to the passenger. The "push to talk" does not seem to work either (or is that just for the CB?). DO you guys get this happening with the original factory units? J+M sells another attachment for about $150 each to get ride of the noise (basically an extra "push to talk" it seems). Ugh, they seem to drain you of $$$ Also I bought a spare Yamaha (aka J+M) unit on eBay but the microphone does not seem to work. The part is dated 2004 and part number is STR-4XY89-30-KT so I wonder if it's just a year compatability issue or if it's broken. The wind noise thing is my real issue tho' Please advise... Thanks, PKslice
  19. OK, so I take off down the highway on my bike and after about two miles this kinda high pitched whirrin' noise starts coming from the front of the bike. It sounds Like it's directly below the front of the false gas tank (where the battery is). I'm thinking that my fan may be trying to go on the fritz, but I'm really not sure. In looking at the temp, it's running way cool and it puzzles me that the fan would even come on at that point. And the noise stops before I can get the bike stopped to check where it's coming from. Any ideas, guys?
  20. Hi! I know this has come up several times here...but I just wanted to clarify. My 2000 RSV makes a loud Whining sound but only when throttle is closed...that is once i give it gas or steady gas the noise goes away. Is this the sound I hear so much about that is inherent in the machines or should I be concerned? Thanks in advance for your responses, Highway Star
  21. Well, my '87 VR is back on the road. BUT one odd thing. I hear a tick from the water pump. It's almost a knock that sounds like if you took a handle of a screwdriver and tapped it against the engine. Can only hear it when on the right side of the bike. It's not the clutch basket rattle that high mileage units can develope. I used my mechanics stethoscope to confirm that it's most certainly is the water-pump. And pulling the clutch lever does not change the sound.. ALL parts in the pump are new including the impellar but not the plastic gear. As it looked to be fine. Yes, Carbs are sync'd. REMEMBER I have not had this on the road for over 2 years. So my memory of how it should sound is rather foggy. It makes this noise the same , cold or hot. I have an oil pressure gauge on the bike...pressure is fine. The sound is there and varies directly w/engine speed. I suspect it could be the pin for the plastic gear on the impellar shaft rocking due to the Ventures naturally uneven firing. BUT I am grasping at straws here. P.S. First time I did the water pump seals on this bike was 20 years ago. SO this is the second time. I even have the Yamaha tool to drive the mechanical seal in correctly. So I really do everything "by the book" Anyone have a firm possibility of the noise source before I disassemble. Or would I be wasting my time taking it apart again for just a noise. Anyone with a reply who has experienced this and if they fixed it or not would be appreciated ..Oh yes, I do see some other threads with info on this. And since syncing the carbs did not change this noise.....................help...
  22. So I was reluctant to post this question about a strange noise that I was hearing on the bike. I used the search feature, and read many threads but nothing was remotely close to what I was hearing. I really couldn't put into words the odd sound. So after enough research, I began to poke around the bike. I tightened to spec everything that had a screw, nut or bolt or clamp on the bike. The noise continued. It only would get real loud at the upper rev limits of each gear until I shifted. I couldn't determine if it was in the motor or in the radiator, but I knew it was up front. I've been on the hunt for the problem for a few months, fixing, then riding, repeat. So today, I decided to ride over to the dealer and drop it for a front to back, top to bottom inspection. As I am out there with the service manager and the bike running, I throttle up and say - see there it is. He hears it as does my buddy who followed me over to drive me back home in his truck after I drop the bike. So the service manager takes over from me and starts throttling up and I move in front of the bike. All three of us have our eyes peeled and ears to the motor, looking at every possible weakness. That's when I see it: that damn plastic chrome colored snap on covering that goes on the center of the light bar below the headlight. It's jumping up and down like crazy. I pop it off and a miracle happens. The noise stops. After my buddy and the manager give me the evil eye, I ride the bike home and it rode lie a whole new bike. What a difference. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem or the same experience, but now you know the inexpensive fix. Check that thing first before anything else. Not sure if I am gonna keep it off or find a way to tighten up the connection and eliminate the rattle. In any event, I am relieved that it didn't cost me $$$. Ride safe TTW
  23. I have been looking at buying a venture for months. I really like the 2007 blue. However, after reading all the posts on here about noise problems with these bikes, I am a bit concerned. How likely is it that I will have a problem with noise issues if I buy a 2007 venture? Has anyone figured out a way to really cure the problem? I don't want to end up with a bike that I can't stand to ride because of an irritating noise. Can some people with experience help me out with this? Thank you.
  24. I was just wondering if anyone has been able to get the Mic Mutes to work on a 1st gen and how hard that is to do? Seems I'm getting some wind noise from the Navigators headset. She has a Modular helmet and I think with her shield open the wind is buffeting around the chin bar. Mine is a 3/4 helmet and there is no noise at all from it. Wayne
  25. I have a cycle comm 1200 CB radio and after years of service with no trouble I now have a whine in the CB and the AM / FM . has this happned to any one. It dose have a NF-721 noise filter don't know if it has gone bad or if something else has happend. The NF-721 is not made any more but I do have a filter coming from airrider that they say has replaced the 721. Can I check any more then just the noise filter If you have any tips you can E-Mail me @ gjhutter@hotmail.com or I will check back in a few Thanks all 1st gen's ROCK:Venture:
