  1. I don't golf but long ago I took an interest when that upstart was making noise. Well, it look as tho he's back !! Great game today !
  2. 06 RSV. when put the stand down in with it in neutral it dies so took the switch off took the back panel off of the switch treid to start it it started moved the handle bars tried to start it again it wont start this has happen to me bofore i just rock the bike while on the side stand and some times its start some times it dont but i hear a loud clicking noise so i took the seat and all the side covers off. the noise is comeing from what i can tell is the starter selanoid i am guessing that that is what it is its under the seat and the positive and negative cables run to it. so can it be that the thing is going bad it has done this off and on for the past two years or is it something else that i should be looking for?
  3. I have a 96 Royal Star Tour Classic i bought about 6months ago and it has developed a new noise. It sounds like a tire or [ame=http://www.starbikeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=873#]belt[/ame] rubbing, but only when I coast or decelerate i in gear with the clutch out. i have read the vast array of threads about "chirping" and "whining" because of the gears and clutch basket, but all these mention the noise in acceleration and not deceleration. i don't have that problem, on when coasting or slowing down. I would greatly appreicate any help or advice. Thanks, Sam p.s. i should note that I have already changed the oil, and the final drive hypoid oil, both with no change to the noise.
  4. After all I read about our whining problem, nothing seams to have made much sense:think: until now. I read this TECH Q&A in Rider magazine and thought some one else may be interested. Q: / recently purchased a used, one-owner 2007 Yamaha Royal Star Venture with the 1,300cc V-4 engine, still under factory warranty with 7,000 miles on it, I discovered (only after I brought it home and began to ride it) that as the engine speed increases there is an annoying "whine" to the motor. I have talked to two other Venture owners about this, and whine is so loud you can't hear the radio! Is this something I should take back to the dealer to have looked at, or is this truly a whine I have to live with? By the way, the noise is in the engine— not the drivetrain—because it is noticeable in neutral as the motor is revved. Dave Sugarbaker, Via E-mail A: The kind of noise you're describing usually comes from straight-cut gears, and the Venture has two sets: the gear pair that drives the clutch and the pair that drives the balancer shaft. The primary gears—the ones that drive the clutch—seem to be the problem here. Most manufacturers address the noise issue by using helical-cut gears (teeth that are at an angle rather than parallel to the shaft) or split gears (gear pairs that are slightly offset and spring loaded). Now, by using straight-cut gears, Yamaha has made accuracy in the machining of the gears highly critical. A driven gear (the one on the clutch hub) that's just a couple of thousandths of an inch too big will make a lot more noise. As with all mass-produced machinery there's a plus and minus tolerance, and ideally the gears will be matched so the tooth engagement is just right. The engineers have probably made sure that even if you got two "big" gears there would be enough tolerance in the shaft bearings that it wouldn't cause a bearing failure.I suggest you take your bike in to your favorite Yamaha dealer and get it looked at while it's still under warranty. Even if the mechanic can't find the problem (using Plastigauge to measure the clearance and then actually finding a specification to compare it to), you'll have documentation and if something breaks later you'll have something to fall back on.
  5. 2007 RSTD w/23k miles and factory warranty until October. Yes; a squeak at idle and fading away with engine rpm, or at least I don't hear it. I just changed oil a few miles before it manifested itself most of the time at an idle. I could occasionally hear it prior to the oil change but very minor in volume, yet now much louder and most of the time. I took it to the dealer and he couldn't identify it yet was willing to tear into it but was cautious about doing that without a clear idea what they were looking for. He asked about oil change and I replied it was just done within a few hundred miles and it was 10-40 Kendal 4 stroke Motorcycle oil. He suggested that I change it to 20-50 since we live in south Florida and it should perform well with it, we could see if the change has any effect on the noise. I read a thread that sounded similar to my noise with the best comment being a possible water pump bearing but 90% of the replies were rhetoric about the OP have hearing issues, so please just good positive comments. Thanks
  6. well i had an oil leak in my new stratoliner, which i fixed for a second time before christmas. i had to replace a bad rocker box casting. while i had it in my new shop i did a little tweaking. i added a cobra powerpro autotune, and a patrick racing big air kit. my new d&d exaust arrived yesterday, so it may go on this weekend. this thing has got balls out power from idle on up. it is one cantankerous machine. lots of engine noise, and an archaic engine design. it handles like a wing, and really sits low. kind of a modernized piece of nostalgia. next project in line is a total service on my majesty scooter. whats every one else working on this winter?
  7. I have been hearing a clunk when going over large bumps.I thought the fender or something like that was loose but a preliminary check turns up nothing loose. It really concerned me sunday after rolling through a rough part of the road.I thought something was gonna fall off. Another noise was like heard when leaning into a curve. Can't explain it but the sound was in conjunction with a feel. Are my wheel bearings dry, damaged, or could it be my neck bearings. I'm sorry this is so cryptic but I can't video tape the sound because the wind noise is too great.I am just hoping some one has an ideawhat neck and wheel bearings symptoms might be. Maybe some inspections I can preform.I csnt figure oit how to change the fork oil without removing the forks.
  8. I got this bike (83 Venture) about 6 months ago and ever since I have been hunting a very loud annoying whistle in the fairing. I have moved duct tape from this vent to that port over the chrome strip under the windshield but could never find it. this last Friday coming home from a ride I went to shift and as I moved my hand over the clutch lever the sound changed, so I kept moving my hand around that area until I found it. there is a hole on the under side of the ball end of the clutch lever. once I covered the hole half of the noise went away so I covered the brake lever hole also and SILENCE IS GOLDEN GOLDEN. It sounded so good not to hear that noise (in stereo) I had to take a 350 mile round trip on Saturday to watch one of my grandsons play football. I almost turned my wife into a Popsicle. We didn't get headed back for home until after dark and the temp dropped to 40. But there was no whistle.
  9. OK, got this noise from the rear like a wheel bearing going down, so I put her on a lift, spin the tire and its got a spot, same place every turn, like a flat spot on bearing. So I pull the axle, then spin the tire and quite as a mouse, so I take the wheel in to the shop and have both side wheel bearing and seals replaced. Came back home put it all back together, SAME THING, with axle in and while riding same noise, axle out no noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 2step
  10. Well here comes another thread about mufflers. I have been experimenting with different mufflers on my 2006 RSMTD. I bought a set of HD mufflers here on the site. Got them & installed them on the bike. I liked the sound, but it wasn't as loud as I really wanted. So I read about all the mods that have been mentioned & tried here on many threads & posts. I considered all of them & decided I didn't want to mutilate what the factory had built as the best engineering possible at the time. So I found another set of slip-ons here on the site, (Thanks, Doug!! ). They are Rush slash cuts. I got them about 2 weeks ago & have been so busy I didn't get them put on until today. WELL, let me tell you these pipes are EXACTLY the sound I was wanting. They remind me of my first pickup with a V-8 motor, (1963) I put dual glass-packs on. Great sound on acceleration & not too loud just going down the road. If you want them to be quiet just back out of the throttle, & if you want some noise just give her the gas & let it wrap. Well anyway I am REALLY happy with the new pipes & will put the HD pipes on my 2000 RSV MM. They will be just right for the RSV that my wife & I ride 2 up. She's not in to the noise. Thanks for all the info I have found here including the drawings for the adapter plate for the HD mufflers & the whereabouts of the HD muffler clamps. C Ya, Patrolman46
  11. I have a 2008 Venture...I'm very frustrated right now with my dealer trying to diagnose my bike. I'm on my third battery in 8 months. They put the third one in a couple of days ago and from the conversation I think mostly because they don't have a clue. What has been happening is that if I don't ride for a couple of weeks the battery was dying...so I thought there may be a draw on the battery...The dealer said that he was only seeing about a 1.2 Miliamp draw coming from my GPS set up. At first he told me that would drain my battery in two weeks...then when he sent me home with my battery charged back up...it was dead the next day. They did all their troubleshooting and finally they said that it was another bad battery. They put the battery in a couple of days ago...I went riding today and when I got back I noticed a noise coming out of the battery...it sounds almost like its sizzling. I don't think that it should do that...It is still making the noise and the bike has been in my garage for over 3 hours now. I asked about the voltage regulator and they told me they checked it...any suggestions at this point? Thanks...Dee
  12. Good morning everyone, My 08 RSV, having only 11K miles on it makes a horiffic grinding noise from the front brakes. I checked the pads and there is alot of brake left. Do I take the pads off and scuff them to remove the glaze? Or is there another problem I should be looking for? Thanks Frank
  13. Well I took the frt brakes off last night because my wife said she heard a noise while we were in Cody. Turns out the brake pads were fine about 3/16" on each side. Pads looks like sintered pads to me and they looked like metal. Hard as heck. Blew out the calipers and pads, sanded the face of the pads and reinstalled. While I had the pads off I compressed the pistons to make the installation easier. it was, but when I applied the frt brakes there was nothing. Keep pumping the brakes and it got real solid like it should be. I am thinking that the noise was just the normal light draging of the pads on the rotor. They seem to be floating caliper so I was not concerned. Rode it in this morning and the brakes were never so solid. Being hard of hearing in top and bottom ranges, I never heard any noise from the brakes. Headed to Madison in the morning to meet up with wife and grandkids, I am stopping by EagleEye's on the way down he is about 20 or so miles from Madison. Yupper is hidding out there also with his wife so it will be nice to see them. Have a great weekend and keep the shinny side up. Bubber
  14. Found this old thread. How many are using this? Is it worth the money? One thingI noticed with my RSV is I wish at time, especially riding solo It would be nice to not have to toggle thru and turn the IC volume down, only to turn back up when I am 2up. Seems like this would cut down on unwanted wind noise as well. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=992
  15. I am using two CBDNROHSB Chatterbox headsets, bought them last December, started using them this spring. We were getting a lot of external noise (wind, etc.) and I thought it was from the passenger microphone because I figured she was getting more wind buffeting than me. I finally got to the point that I turn off the intercom until we need to communicate, just too much noise. Well, I have discovered that it's my microphone creating all of the outside noise, not from the passenger. The only way I can stop the noise is by using my left hand to cover the mike, squeeze my fingers together and really tighten my fist around the microphone. I compress the foam down to the point I can feel the microphone under the foam and then the noise stops. If I just cover the mike loosely it doesn't help. I'm wondering if anyone else is using this particular headset kit (or another from Chatterbox) and what your experience with it has been.
  16. Hello everyone, I come in need of some help. I recently purchased (3 months ago) a 99 RSV with 2k miles. She was mostly stored, when i brought her home i did a complete oils, plugs, and fluid flush. She runs great, but now at almost 5k miles its now making an interesting noise / rattle when you let off the throttle. Listen to the file title rattle.mp3. It makes the noise when the engine is warm, not so much when it's cold. Could it need a valve adjustment? The other audio file is what she sounds like when cold. Not sure if its the right noise or not, but that's the way she sounds. Any help would be appreciated.
  17. Hi Im new here. I just bought my first bike and have noticed a noise from the right hand side of the bike. I happens when Im in neutral with the clutch handle released. If you squeeze the handle it will go away. I rode from Lansing to St Ignace yesterday and it seemed to get a litle noisier than it has been for the last couple of weeks. I did take it in to my local dealer and they told me it was the clutch basket rattling and not to worry about it. Well as of the 28th of this month the warranty is over on my bike. Well I am kind of worried about it. Any help on this would be great. Do i force them to fix something they cant fix or should I ride it:mytruck1:until this happens. Oh this is a 2006 Yamaha Venture 1300.
  18. I originally posted this on one of the Goldwing sites and got no response. For the last few weeks I've been trying to get my telephone synched up to work through the Zumo like I had it on the RSV. When I connect the mic splitter I get a lot of noise that sounds like alternator whine and I really don't know what to try next. The noise is coming through the mic circuit. Without the intercom on I don't hear it on the bike but the person on the other end of phone call does. I could live with that. However, when the IC is turned on the noise is unbearable. So far I have checked all connections and grounds. I replaced the noise isolator on the AUX input. I've tried both an MP3 and Edsets mic splitter. I tried unplugging the mic from the GPS but the noise is still there on the IC. If I take the mic splitter out there is no noise on the IC. I have the Honda rear passenger controller which gives you a filter that is plugged into the mic circuit. I've tried with and without it and there is no difference. I can increase or reduce the noise by moving the wires around but I can never eliminate it. Would a torroid magnet on of the wires help? Is there anything else I can try? Thanks for any help, Dennis
  19. Rode my 89 VR for an hour this morning then let it sit for an hour. Started it up again to to ride and it started right up but made a sawing or hising sound. I hit the stop button to kill the engine and it stopped. Started it up again and made the same noise. I listened for a couple seconds and decided that it is the starter that is not disengaging. Shut if off and started it up and this time the noise went away. My VR has 25,500 miles on it and only 1500 miles is mine. The 1st 24,000 was from South Lake Tahoe and in the winter months it was a garaged. And at my home it is also garaged. Any suggestions of what to check or to clean?
  20. I have a 2004 RSMV and the front brakes are extremely noisey and very annoying. The bike only has 22K KM (approx 13750 Miles) and still has the factory pads. Even though they are still good I want to change them to get rid of the noise. I as thinking about going to the EBC and was wondering which pads, the organic, ceramic, ????? Please advise.
  21. My 07 has 1500 miles on it and yesterday I noticed a noise that sounds like the old dry speedometer in the old cars. I notice it most when I slow down but if I listen closely I can hear it riding around town. I really would like to take it on a 150 mile ride later today to meet the kids for Mother's Day supper but now I'm not sure. I jacked it up and spun the tire and didn't hear it. Any ideas?
  22. I'm sure this is a quick one for some of you,,, I got a rear end noise in the last few days. With engine off, simply backing the bike or pushing it forward I hear a creaking noise like a old wood ship or a door. It's variable but repeats as you push the bike. It sounds like it is coming from the rear end, left side of wheel. Is this simply a need to grease the rear end? If so, can you put me on a link to do it? (Also, is it rideable or park it till it's fixed.) Thanks, Mike G in SC
  23. I posted this just after I got my 83 Venture royale last summer but couldn't remedy. Different year, same noise. If you saw the movie Dumb & Dumber, Jim carry's character asks," do you want to hear the most obnoxious sound ever?" Well mine is kind of like the sound he made. Like a prolonged chicken squawk. It starts at about 35 mph, it stops just as I come to a stop. It was really howling today (my second ride this year) so as I approached my house I pulled in the clutch and killed the motor. The noise again continued til I rolled to a stop. It is only one note no matter the engine speed or the ground speed. It does seem louder at times but that could be that the engine makes less noise at lower speed. I really like the bike except for this issue. I'm reluctant to spring for new tires and the starter clutch upgrade without knowing how serious this is. Thanks for any input. PS I can't imagine that the brakes could be the cause but tommorow I plan to pull the units off the wheel to make sure
  24. Well yesterday as I left a job interview I started hearing a weirn high pitched noise. I pulled into a gas station and checked things out. I could not find anything that may have caused the noise. I decided to baby the bike home and really get into things after it cooled down. Well I did not hear the noise again. Got home parked it in the garage and started digging through threads to find a starting point. About the time I thought it had cooled enough my wife got home. That is when I figured out the noise. I had gotten a new cell phone and was not used to the ringtone. She had tried to call hoping to catch me before I headed home. Lesson, always check the phone first then the bike. Thought you might get a laugh out of this. Shaun
  25. Did a 350mi ride with the queen yesterday and noticed a disturbing noise near the differential, today it's going crick...crick...crick...as the wheel rolls slowly....thinking somehow the diff is shot, oil clean, took sensor out and teeth look fine...check the forum and learned it might be the diff pins being dry....broke it down, cleaned and greased with honda moly 60....noise gone...Thanks to the powers that be....Mick
