  1. Got the trike back Saturday. Apparently the drive shaft was aligned wrong and the rotors were bad on the rear brakes. There was alot of vibration and noise. Took it back to the mechanic and they had to adjust the drive shaft and put on new rotors. Since I picked it up Saturday afternoon, I have put several hundred miles on it. It's running way better now and I'm loving it! Except for the gas mileage. I was getting 36 mpg before the trike kit and now I am only getting 26-27 mpg. The carbs have been synched. Anyone have an idea what else it could be? I posted some more parts for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested. Will post more pics when I get time. See everyone at the rally next week. Don
  2. My present carb settings on my 84: 1. Back to white spacer under circle clip on needles, but my gas mileage has suffered. Low to mid 40's. Used to be high 40's, low 50's at 65 mph. (Once got 55 mpg at 55 mph!-retired and why rush home?) My Venture is used almost exclusively 2 up. (We're not light weight people) Checked plugs in early spring they were very white (lean). But never got any knock. Still white now but less white than before. Thinking of going back to a few thousands less than stock white spacer (.010-.020 less?) 2. Pilot AIR jet #2 under carb diaphram. Filled in with 24 hr JB weld and redrilled out with a #53 drill bit. Was a guess and worked. It does have minor throttle response improvement. 3. Pilot screws: 1.75 turns out 4. Carbs synched several times. 5. Used to have a bad hesitation just off idle accelerating, now completely gone, with above settings, starts in warm weather with no choke. 6. Original carb diaphrams coated with dielectric (silicone) grease. If done every year or 2 they will never get holes!!! Do this on any rubber. 7. 3 Friends with 1300's. All are in low 40's on mpg. Dropped needles about .030-.050" depending on their preferences. 8. Why haven't you done my carb needle spacer change out? Better MPG, more HP (hotter spark), reduced operating cost and a "greener" (less carbon footprint) machine?
  3. Still got the Taurus? Ad claims you are only 40 miles from me. Little more than that I think. Looks good in pics. I'm stuck without transportation and waiting on insurance to say something. Just wanted to know if it was there. It looks good. What kind of MPG? Does it use any oil? I'm a Buick man but got stuck this time if Insurance don't come up with something I may have to buy a Skateboard. I got a good Unicycle!! Wanna trade??
  4. After dealing or should I say not dealing with the problem of 25 mpg,Skydoc17 offered to show me how to install my carb diaprahms them at MD...He did that and the needle mod while he was in there....All I can say is WOW.... From 25 mpg to 40 mpg on the trip home...Riding 2-up with all the Clampett stuff strapped to the bike at 70-75 across the turnpike.... Earl, you are the "MAN"......:D Thanks again.....
  5. My 87 xvz1300 seems to run ok. Back in Feb. Muffinman synched my carbs at the N.Ga/Sc m & e. all of the carp pistons are doing the same dance and it idles smoothly right where it's suppossed to:thumbsup2: But, I'm getting Horrible gas mileage at 20 MPG. GeorgeS suggested I start a new thread and get yall's input.:backinmyday::backinmyday: So, What do you think fellows:icon_smile_question
  6. Hey guys, new to the forum.I have just bought a 97 RSTD. I am getting pretty poor gas mileage.Around 28mpg.Have changed plugs, synced carbs, checked air filter and changed fuel filter.Timing looks good.I think the bike vibrates more than it should at highway speeds,of course I don't know how much it should vibrate if any. It has after market exhaust but dont know if it has been re jetted. I get a lot of popping on decelleration. I am now looking at carb rebuild or a possible problem with the coils. The bike has 36000 mi on it. Any help would be great.
  7. I Know is to early to ask, but right now is break in period so you can't / want to sqeezzz your Mr. Max, and I'm just curios what is MPG /- L/100Km on your Max, and as well is it comfortable. Con's Pro's Please, any impute Dude.
  8. Hi, Over the 3 years I've owned my 87 VR 1300, I've averaged 36-37 mpg. While this is right in the mid-range of what a bunch of y'all get, I was always perplexed by the 45 or even 50 mpg-ers. FWIW, I've checked all the usual suspects (fuel levels, new diaphragms, pressure sensor working, new plugs & tuneup, etc). I've experimented with up to four 9/16" holes in the airbox lid which did little to nothing. Then I came across 5bikes (Chuck) and his recommendation to lower the carb metering needles, that it runs rich from the factory in the needle range. Hmmm... Well, after some foolin' around, I arrived at the following: - Needles lowered .050". - All extra holes in airbox taped over (didn't run well with needles lowered AND holes open). It's running well and for several tanks now I've averaged 40 mpg with the same driving cycle and style I always do. I pulled one spark plug after these few tanks and found that it's very light gray on the ground electrode, light tan on one side of the insulator, the rest of the insulator is white, and just a bit of black on the end of the threaded portion. Seems about right with the detergents in today's gas. A 10% increase with this adjustment is good, but only half the story. 5bikes gets high 40's on his 1200 but rides almost exclusively country roads and in no hurry either - steady 55-65. I commute to work which is about 1/3 Interstate, the rest mostly suburban / rural roads with a little city. On the Interstate I'm doing 75-90, and other roads I like to accelerate briskly to somewhat over the speed limit (shame, shame). Chuck asked me if I'd run a tank or two slower to see what happens. Thru a supreme effort on my part, I rode the Interstate at 65-70, kept the rural and city roads at or below speed limit and accelerated very gently - for one tank - I couldn't do it any longer :-) The results for that tank? 43 mpg - best I've ever done. So now I'm trying to find a happy medium - a little more spirited so it's more fun, but not as fast as before which will also be better on my driving record. (My current tank, judging by the behavior of the gas gage, will probably end up at 41 or 42.) If I truly ran a tank on just country roads doing 55-65 I'd probably get 45. (It also seems that the 1200's get a little better mpg than 1300's.) I've always heard, and it makes total sense, that driving slower produces better mpg. On one hand I knew my wrist is a wee bit "leaden", but pretty much denied to meself that I was aggresive enough to cause poor mileage. Then I'd read posts here, one says it's all in the wrist, another says their bike gets "40 no matter how they ride". Well, I took numbers, did my best to control the variables, and this is the result. Jeremy
  9. My last two tanks were 36 and 41 mpg. It seems to be fluctuating a lot. I have not synched my carbs yet, but I am hoping to get better MPG after synch'ing...(I run highway between 65 to 70 mph) What is the best MPG on a 2nd gen Venture out there?
  10. Just experimenting with the carbs. I have a 1990 and installed the original 1983 42.5 pilot jets and 180 air jets. Idled nice a little more power, mileage about 36 mpg at 70 mph and 4000 rpm. Did what 5bikes described to improve mileage lowered needles power was decent and mileage improved to 40-43mpg at 70 mph @ 4000rpm. Just for fun I used the the original 1983 needles which have 5 positions to raise or lower the needles unlike the 1986+ needles which have no adjustments. The 1986+ taper of the needles is less then the 1983-85 needles. Took the 83 needles and raised them to the highest setting its got real nice power but its running rich I can smell it on my clothes, slight stumble on the initial throttle twist then its a rocket, mileage a grand high of 25 mpg. Im gonna now set it to the lowest needle setting (so it sits deeper) and see what results I get. Anyone know if the the actual tube the needle sits in is different from 83-85 to 86-93? Just playing around with this stuff.
  11. If you are an Iphone user check out the Accufuel application from the Apple App store. It is an simple application that tracks mileage for each fill up and keeps an average mpg as well as a tank mpg. Since I always have my phone with me it is easy to enter the data at each fill up. $0.99 well spent. Check it out at: http://www.appigo.com/accufuel/ DT
  12. I was going to try a poll, but can't see how, so I'll just ask the question. What do you get to the gallon from your venture in normal riding (whatever that is ?) I'm asking because when I asked this before, comments seemed to be divided between those who regularly managed 45-50 to the gallon or even more and assumed anyone who got less drove like a nutter, and those who returned 30-35 to the gallon and could not get more no matter how they rode. I have felt for a long time that there must be two specifications of carburettor, or something that can be set two ways or that can fail, that means some people get good mpg while others don't. I've made up a little table to help people understand international posts - UK/imperial mpg vs USA mpg vs metric litres/100Km. mpg (uk) mpg (us) l/100km 20 17 14.1 25 22 11.3 30 26 9.4 35 30 8.0 40 35 7.0 45 39 6.3 50 43 5.6 55 48 5.1 I get about 30mpg (UK) with a sidecar, pulling a trailer, on a run; but I only used to get about 33-35mpg solo. I've checked the float height, balanced the carbs, changed the plugs (currently iridium) and put on an easy flowing air filter. For me this is the crunch point for its use as a tourer - I'd so like an improvement before our long tour this Summer - both because of the cost of petrol and the limited tank range.
  13. FROG MAN

    35 mpg

Our 89 got 35 mpg riding two up and pulling a medium size trailer. That's running interstate at 70-75 mph. Is this good? Others riding single and two up without trailers got 40-44mpg.All first gens. What do you get towing?
  14. Was wondering what the avarage mpg for Ventures was?I went from Baltimore to Brooklyn,Ny. yesterday and got 42.6 mpg.It was a spirited ride on the way running up to 75 or so.We got passed like we were standing still! On the way back traffic was terrible.Bumper to bumper 3/4 of the way home.Motor wise bike is all stock execpt for R/K mufflers and pilot srews turned out 1/4 of a turn. Not sure if this is the right forum for this question :think:I,m sure some have input though.
  15. "Hi folks". I'm new here and I'm presently riding an '07 RoadStar. I've had mileage issues with the Roadie and usually get real good MPG when I finish fiddling with the carbs. I started with 28-32 MPG off the showroom floor and stock jetting. After 6 carb surgery's by me and alot of fiddling I'm at 52-54 MPG just cruising 60-65 and 40-44 MPG on the super slab. I'm considering the Venture and I can work carbs but I'd sure like a bike that comes resonably setup off the floor. I read 42MPG on the Yammy tags at the dealer but I'd like to know from you folks that ride these bikes everyday just what you really get? Any and all input will be appreciated. Please be candid..............Thanks.....Mike P.S. How bad is the Venture in downtown stop n go manuvering?
  16. Okay, been consistently riding at 65 mph on Interstate to work the last couple of weeks and gas mileage has been around 34 to 35 mpg, 1 up. Also been smelling gas and seeing a spot from the four tubes on the left side. So yesterday tried V7Goose idea of adjusting the floats. This is the first time I have ever taken carbs off of any vehicle, let alone 4 of them. Actually the process was not bad at all, just follow the article Freebird has in the tech section. Got on the phone for a little bit with V7, just to confirm how to measure , thanks V7Goose. Put everything back together, went for a quick run around the neighborhood to make sure the bike still ran. Also no backfiring, have Khromewerk slip ons. Today, going to 2 up at 65 mph, got 40.9 mpg, :cool10: I will try going around 80 mph on this next tank going to work and let you know what the mph is. I do know at 80 to 85 mph, 2up I was getting around 30 mpg. So if I can get 35 mpg at 80 mph, I will be a happy camper. :cool10:
  17. Thanks to all those who advised me on how to refill the antifreeze, etc. This comes under FYI. I live a few miles from the Natchez Trace Parkway, and there is a short ride I take down to Rocky Springs (about 100 miles roundtrip). Call it 2-wheel meditation or therapy. Works every time. At any rate, before my recent changes to the bike I always got 47.8 to 48.1 mpg. I know it's a high number but the speed limit on the Trace is 50 mph and that's what I ride at (actually cruise set between 50 and 55 to allow for error). With Yamaha oil and filter, stock paper air filters, and stock exhausts, I got my routine figure of 47.8 mpg last week. Since changing to Mobil 1 motorcycle synthetic and Pure One filter, K&N air filters, and Bub slip-on exhausts, I have now gotten 51.2 mpg on one trip and 51.7 mpg today. This is a pretty controlled experiment as I always fill immediately before getting on the Trace and refill at the same place/same pump immediately when exiting. Same fuel (Exxon regular), same pump, same trip and speed. So . . . those of you who are worried (as I was) that intake/exhaust modifications would adversely affect gas mileage should worry no longer. Did I mention that the Tour Deluxe feels and sounds like a new bike? Incredible difference! Thanks again to all who helped with advice on exhausts, refilling the radiator, etc.
  18. TEW47

    MPG

Went on a group ride from Mobile to New Orleans on HWY 90 west. We averaged about 50mph and I filled up and put in 1.8 gallons and went 93.7 miles. I think that is 52 mpg. Comming home on I 10 east at indicated 75( I know really 70) I went 198 miles before I put it on reserve. Total milage on that tank was 204. Have not filled up second tank yet. Really happy with first tank milage. tew47
  19. Hey folks, Here we go again! Sorry to trouble you, but I thought I had saved (subscribed) the thread where someone had changed the gears & /Or the rear end in a 1st Gen. As before my Goldwing at 75 MPH ran about 3,000 RPM, these Ventures run about 4,200. Went by the Mama Yamahammer shop today here in Ft Smith and AK shop manager said he has heard of it done but never done it himself?!?!?!?!?! He has one friend that just changed out the rear drive from Venture with a Vmax. BUT here are the ratio's Venture 1st gear 2.600 2nd gear 1.772 3rd gear 1.347 4th gear 1.068 and 5th gear .906 (deadly on the MPG on the interstates ORE over 65 MPH ) V Max 1st gear 2.529 2nd gear 1.772 ** 3rd gear 1.347 ** 4th gear 1.076 and 5th gear .0928 ???? I don't see anything that says we can go from 4,200 RPM to alot lower to get better MPG ?!?!?!?!? BOTH final drives are --- spar gears at 1.775 (not to up on all these numbers) Please, Help me here if I'm missing something. I don't see 31 MPG up to 45 here, ??. OR if you know for SURE someone that has raised his ratio and LOWER his RPM please send me their email or link. Love my Royale, but hate the MPG's. Someone mentioned last week to sysnc the carbs they have been done this year, also cleaned air filter, seafoam thru full tank of gas at interstate speeds (up N dwn), as before 40 MPG at 60-65 and BELOW, over 65 MPH, 31 - 38 depending on the headwinds!!! Last week drove in 25 - 30 mph headwind, 65-75, mostly 2 lanes, only 50 miles of interstate out to where the air could really beat me up, ran out of gas 4 miles from gas station, 31 MPG!!! Wife loved that at 4:am, will never live that down Thankx for ANY help or guidance you may give!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will get pic's of dream bike on site soon as I'm not real good at these computers. (thanks admin or ?? for the smileys) Gary C Arkansas
  20. ok so as many of you know i've had terrible MPG and power issues with my 84 venture royale. originaly thought it was my carb being gummed up or needing a good sync. well the otherday I was just about pulling my hair out trying to get the carbs synced. No matter how much I turned the screws the back 2 carbs always had may more suction then the front two carbs. I found the back 2 exhaust pipes could move freely just by my hand this leads me to believe my exhaust gaskets are none existant at this point. my question is i've heard that the gaskets are very expensive if you buy from the dealer, is there a good source to purchase these or anyone know of what material they are made from and if it would be cheaper to make my own? I'd love to get this bike running right i can't afford the MPG i'm getting with it right now. any help is greatly appreciated and desperatly needed.
  21. I know that diesel engines will improve mpg over a breaking period. My truck saw an increase in mpg from 17 (new) to 20 to 21 after 20,000 miles. I have just turned 14,000 miles on my RSV and the last 3 tanks of fuel I have gotten 48 to 50 mpg. NO, I am not complaining. Just quite happy at the milage. The only other thing could be that I ran some Seafoam thought it within the last 800 miles.
  22. Have an '89 with two small cracks on the L faring just at the top by the stereo assembly. What is the best way to repair, they are about 1/2 inch long from the top around the trim edge and just under.?? Also, has anyone ever put higher gears in their Venture? I get 40 MPG average under 60 MPH on the back roads where I don't get on and off the throttle alot, but on the interstates, well that is a different story - my MPG is about 31 - 36 depending on the head winds. Have had Goldwings that got 48 on the back roads, and 45 on interstate. This Venture runs about 1000 -1,200 tighter than a Wing, need to put in higher gears or a sixth one!?!?!?!?!?!?! Thanks for any help or guidance! Caz
  23. Yesterday a group of us did what turned out to be a marathon day ride. 350 miles thru Lake Tahoe and the California Sierras. I started Saturday at 0730hrs and finally parked the scoot at 2000hrs. I didn't have a chance to check mpg until tanking up in Tahoe. Between Tahoe and traveling some of the crookedest roads in the US.. I put on a lot of agressive riding...my chicken strips are gone.. Lots of 2nd,3rd, 4th gears. Rarely got into 5th. R's between 3K and 6K. I traveled 153 miles and used 2.8 gallons. 50+ MPG!! The only thing I can figure is it must be the something in the air. The last time I got 50+ was VWIII in Susanville and the Sierras. Most of the time running on the slab at 70 I average around 38-39. Go figure???
  24. :confused24:Thought I would be getting better gas mileage after Roadhouse pipes and K&N filters(36 mpg). I plugged AIS correctley and bike seems to be running fine. (38 mpg) before pipes and filters and AIS plugging, only 960 miles on bike ??? Maybe need to rejet later ???? Got upwards of the 40 mpg today:cool10: My bike runs wonderful. Syncing the carbs did the trick. Will check mpg several times to get exact reading later. Thanks everyone for your help.
  25. Guest

    50 mpg (US)

I don't understand this at all, but in several trips on my 87 VR I have gotten 50+ mpg several times, and just not one tank but several successive ones. Generally I run at 40 mpg. Couple of theories? 1. Maybe fuel without ethanol makes a difference. 2. Seems to do better when the weather is HOT. 3. Clearly riding at 45 - 50 mpg, nice and sedately makes a difference, but that much? 4. Head/tail wind? I know this will drive Greg in London nuts, but it is the facts.
