  1. “WE’RE BACK!” As many of you know our one year trike build took three and a half years to finish. With less than 400 miles on the new trike we started our adventure June 15th, eventually spanning 10 states, 26 days. and 4,020.3 miles. The worst gas mileage was 19.83 MPG and the best 35.7 MPG, with an average MPG of 30.954 for the trip. The only problem we had with the trike part was the two new lnner CV joint boot clamps did not hold properly even though I had bought the special tool to tighten the clamps with. We had to have them changed out with worm-type hose clamps in Newcastle, Wyoming. However Charlize. the 1989 Yamaha Venture Royale half decided to lose all power going up a hill just after passing a truck. Eventually I performed enough surgery to get us into Lusk Wyoming where she threw another fit. This time I got out a piece of string that was in the lower trunk and bound the wiring harness to a handy place making a temporary fix, that would do until a better one came along. At this point she started flooding so out came one of what would be many cans Sea-Foam and Lucas oil fuel system cleaner. However, she kept flooding off and on till we left Reno for Red Bluff California. Wa La, no more flooding. The electrical problem was solved in Colorado Springs, Colorado with the installation of a new spade-type fuse block. The temperature gauge quit working in Gallup, New Mexico after crossing what seemed like 20 railroad tracks, never to work again. I learned a lot about trike idiosyncrasies, some we like some not so much. As we came through Roseburg, Oregon on the final stretch home to Springfield OR, I told Marilla that I wouldn't take a Million Bucks for the memories, but I didn't think you could pay me enough to do it again. For the record I hate, no we, hate wind! P.S. I need an E-ZSteer. Does anyone know where I can get one for an '89 Venture Royale? Here are links to photobucket albums showing pictures we took on the trip. http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Custer%20Battlefield/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Mount%20Rushmore/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Fan%20Fest/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Petrified%20Forest%20and%20Painted%20Desert/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Pikes%20Peak%20and%20Garden%20of%20the%20Gods/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Pikes%20Peak%20Hwy/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Skywalk%20area/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Through%20Yellowstone/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Trip%20Batch%20Two/ http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/Ultimate%20Road%20Trip/

  3. I know that it has been discussed a lot and I have been searching reading through past post to see what I can find as well. My bike(97 Royal Star Tour Classic with 35K miles) has the Barons Big Air Kit installed: http://www.baronscustom.com/catalog/display/254/ ,....along with Barons Nasty Boys Exhaust. It runs Strong, Sounds great, but I only get about 32-34 MPG with it,..No matter how I drive it. This seems very low compared to what I have been reading in past post's. I have new plugs, run synthetic oil, have had the carbs synced at an idle (they needed it), but still have no improvements. Would the bigger jets in the Barons Kit make for the poor fuel economy? I would consider different jets if it would bring me closer to the 40 MPG mark. I called Barons today and they were no help at all,.. Any input would be appreciated,. Its just a bummer to have to fuel up every 125 miles when the others that we ride with can go 200 miles on a tank with their v-twins.
  4. Ok, I put on different exhaust, Barons Double Nasty pipes, put on the K&N filters, had the dealer rejet and repin the carbs (said it had to be done). Have any of you done this and what did it do to your mpg? Just wondering if anybody else has done this or not. My mpg has dropped from 44 to around 32 I'm thinking. Guess I'm just wondering if something could be wrong or if this is just the price I pay for putting on different exaust? Thanks for the feedback.
  5. OK I need a car. Tarus is rusting from bottom up. In another year it will be Ugly. Runs great but body is junk. I have found two cars. Retirement check won't go for new one. What I found is; 99 Buick Century only 23k for $6000. Most of the goodies on this one and Buicks are hard to beat for dependabilty. Not sure what size V-6 in this one but they do around 25 MPG from what I know about them. Was going to go for this one because of milage then this caught my eye. 99 Chrysler Concord LXI with 45K. Loaded. Has more goodies than the Buick and I think looks better Warden don't agree. Both have great looking bodies. I don't know much about Chysler dependabilty these days (ran them in 60's when they were Muscle Cars) What kind of MPG could I expect with this one and will it last for a while. I think both of these are real low miles for the year and could last me for a while. WHICH ONE?? http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/inview/detail.jsp?ct=u&car_id=290785851&dealer_id=57764155&car_year=1999&dealership_view_name=kevinsautosaleswva&address=25113&sort_type=make_modelASC&cardist=5737 http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/inview/detail.jsp?ct=u&car_id=290635226&dealer_id=57764155&car_year=1999&dealership_view_name=kevinsautosaleswva&address=25113&sort_type=make_modelASC&cardist=5737 One more question. The Tarus is loaded and runs great. Just looking at the body has me fed up with it and it has developed a shimmy at higher speeds lately. It is a 02. What is it worth as trade-in.
  6. Rode home, 2 up, the other evening, mostly in the dark on country roads....50-55 mph, taking it easy...filled up yesterday....182mi....3.7 gal....50 mpg....usually get 42 at 70mph or so.....likin' this bike more and more...
  7. I have an 08 RSV. In June, I was getting an average of 44 MPG (). In July, I changed the plugs to NGK Iridium, replaced the air filters with K&N, and replaced the fuel filter with a Purolator (??) recommended on this board. Since then, my gas mileage has dropped of dramatically (avg of 38 mpg, one-up, highway driving @ 55). Last month, in an effort to understand my loss of gas mileage, I pulled the plug caps (which all measured @ 9.6k ohms), and changed the plugs back to the stock NGKs, and synched the carbs. Over the last month, my gas mileage has dropped to approx 34 MPG...this represents a 10 MPG drop over the last 5 months... Today, I cleaned and charged the air filters...I'm not overly optimistic at this point. Any help or suggestions would be reatly appreciated...I'm running out of ideas!
  8. Read some of the posts regarding power problems. Not sure it fits mine. I have a 2000 Venture and just put on a sidecar for the wife. It weighs 225 lbs. Expected to loose some power and fuel milage. However, I went from 35/40 down to 20/25 MPG. I don't expect to go get the good MPG back but this is a hit. Going up grades on the interstates is a struggle. Have changed plugs, no wet ones when I did. Does not starve or stall out. Looking for ideas, suggestions. Thanks, Bill
  9. well we went for a despiration ride today.. 45 and rain.. men on a mission.. my buddy dwight, his son, and i.. had to ride the intruder.. 42 mpg.. 120 miles till reserve.
  10. less gas mileage than I have over the last two years. I used to average 45 MPG. Now, I'm getting right around 40 MPG. The only two changes that I have made are: 1) Replaced my stock air filters with K&N air filters 2) Added a pair of Baker Air Wings Any thoughts on which addition would most likely be the culprit? I do have the Air Wings pretty much open all the way...would this cause a significant amount of drag...enough to lose a couple of MPGs? Or is the more likely culprit the K&N filters?
  11. I'm currently in Albuquerque and after riding 1425 miles with 3 other bikes my bike's gas mileage sucks. I'm riding with a Harley Heritage Classic, a Goldwing, and a 2007 Tour Deluxe. Using a speedohealer calibrated speedometer/odometer I have only achieved more than 30 mpg on two tanks of gas. Most are in the 26 to 27 range with one as low as 24. The tour deluxe is doing slightly better. We've been hitting reserve at about 120 miles. Whenever I put in 4.3 gallons the Tour deluxe uses 3.9 and the wing about 3.3. The Harley is usually pretty close to the wing. We've been running a pretty consistent 70 mph with cruise control. The two tanks that were above 30 mpg were in a slower part of the ride. The bike runs fine and the carbs were recently synched. Is anyone else seeing this kind of mileage and what should I check when I get home. I could have driven the car and used less gas. Dennis
  12. Arrived back form our eastern tour yesterday at noon, yesterday. Round trip was 5829 Km's. I used 397 litres pulling a trailer about 34.5 mpg. Deb used 322 litres approx. 42.5 mpg. We hit about 4 days of rain and it was very cold around Gaspe' and the Cabot Trail but we enjoyed ourselves. Camped when it was nice. Here's a few picks.
  13. Wow! I was impressed. 38 MPG for a 27 year old motor with 34K miles! Awesome.
  14. Just when you think all is going good....you start leaking fuel. My '86 has always averaged about 32 mpg. With a trip coming up I wanted to improve that and so I did the needle shim mod about 3 weeks ago and got an improvement to 38-40 mpg. All was well!!! The next tank I dropped to 35-36 mpg and shortly after I started to get wiffs of gas when I stopped but never had any signs of leaking under the bike. I also notice a little bit of vibration in the bike. So, I got out the carbtune and did a sync. Things were a little better but still get a gas smell here and there. Started thinking - stuck float. Last night I put the bike on the center stand and started looking for the leak and was getting a few drops under the bike in front of the rear tire. I removed the side panels and gave each carb a thwack with the but end of a screwdriver. No change. Gave the bike a rest and came back to it 20 minutes later and repeated the procedure but this time when I popped #3 I suddenly got an evening out of the idle and a slight reduction in rpms. Turn the bike off...no more drips. This morning I ride to work, park and suddenly get the smell of gas.. shooooot. I get off and has a dollar bill size spot under the bike. I just got back from Wally World where I purchased SeaFoam and dumped a full can into a just new tank of gas and a short ride to get it in the carbs. Smaller puddle when I parked it this time but still there. I guess we'll see how it does parked in the warmth with SeaFoam in the carbs for the day. Could something else be the culprit here... diaphram issue or needle come loose? OH The frustration!!!

    Low Gas Mileage

My 2008 Venture went from 38/40 MPG to 23 MPG right after my 600 mile service. Can someone help me. I checked with the head mechanic at te dealership and he told me to keep my foot out of the carbs. HELP!!!!
  16. Eileen and I just checked into our hotel in the Boston area. I have my one year checkup tomorrow to see how the cancer is doing. I'm not too worried about it, I am confident that things are going well. It was a long drive and we are tired but it was an OK trip. Weather is nice and it was a fairly relaxing drive. This was our first long trip in the 2011 Kia Sorento. Driving about 70 MPH most of the time and occasionally running close to 80 before catching myself and slowing down, it got about 27 MPG. I think that pretty decent for a AWD mid sized SUV. I'm very pleased with that. The 2004 Sorento that we traded in only got about 18 MPG under the same driving conditions.
  17. I have had a few inquiries on my MPG since the bikes rebuild. Rode 158.7 miles between fillups today and used 3.705 gallons. Sunoco, 93 octane gas. 42.83 MPG. 1300 cc engine, Vmax heads, FJR rear end. No v-boost. Carbs are from original 1200 engine. Carb mains re-jetted to 140. Needle jets are now set at .102", increased from setting of .072" due to nasty hesitation around 6,500 RPM's. Ride was through rural areas with very moderately hilly terrain, number of small towns. Lot of curvy roads. Very gentle ride around 55 mph for most part with very minimal hard acceleration. Riding solo. I am very happy with this. Gary
  18. I've got about 2000 mile on the bike now and went from 42 mpg to about 37 mpg. It will also stall at a red light after about a minute of sitting idle. It does this not as I'm slipping the clutch to pull out, but as I twist on the throttle to rev it up before pulling out. Will try some Seafoam as soon as I get back from dealers, but I really don't want them messing with my carbs... Remember reading somewere about syncing carbs and needing a tool? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  19. when did you, start keeping up with gas mileage for me 1960 volvo p544 gas was $.22 reg ,little car got 24 mpg best mpg was 1953 studebaker champ v8 od 35 mpg boy we have come a long way in 50 yrs lowell
  20. I bought my 2nd Venture a 2004 Midnight 9000 miles low low price repo. It sat, my guess 6-9 months. The day of purchase I drove it from D.C. to Kansas City on a wing and a prayer. I notice its gas mileage is below average ... about 33 mpg not 38-40 like my old 99. Runs fairly good but the carbs on the left leaked when stopped. Get it home and start seafoam, no good. I know the floats are sticking. I sync the carbs which were way off, smoother but not by much, still krappy MPG. I aint up to a carb rebuild, so I take it to the shop, and shop rejets, the jets were green with corrosion, but he puts in the next larger pilot jet....which I didn't want. He said the floats were not sticking. The bike now backfires like popcorn. He readjusts the settings and the bike runs great, not as fast as the 99, but very good. Backfire constantly. I tighten all the exhaust bolts I can, the bottom front bolts are impossible with removing a pack of stuff. Backfire much better now. Gas milege sucks!!! 28 MPG. Back again to mechanic he says he changed the pilot back to stock. The next day the carb is leaking on the left side ahhggggg!!!! Back again to the mechanic, each visit of course costs more, up to 3 bills now. So now he is replacing the float needles, I wish I worked on this higher level stuff and had more knowledge. The mechanic's a great guy but these repeat trips are the norm not the exception in my experience. The worst part is I may get it back less than right again. The guy is an independent, the local Yamaha dealer's service is so horribly bad it makes this guy look highly competent in comparison. The Honda dealer has teenagers for mechanics, so you can guess how they do. If I had a Harley I would have many good service options available around here, but they shun metric. Opinions please http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/wtf-pics-tiger-man.jpg Yamaha certified mechanic on break in St Joseph Mo 4300
  21. i bet it will get 500 mpg http://www.moyermade.com/chevyV8.html
  22. Well I checked the mileage on the new RSTD for the first time and got 41 mpg but I'm still in the break in period so I think that will improve. What are others getting.
  23. My 2006 Midnight Venture just turned over 50,000 miles on this recent road trip and I experienced the BEST gas mileage ever on a tank of gas!! wow.. I road for close to 150 miles before pulling over for fuel at a regular fuel stop and pumped in 12 litres of fuel.. 56.8 MPG Imperial and 47.3 MPG US 70 mph in 5th with all tail winds made a huge diff.. Big beautiful day, 5 hours of traveling to do and I just decided to roll softly.. and was surprised at the mileage.. albeit boring After that fuel stop I slammed it in 4th and rolled with the fast traffic to get home the rest of way hehe.. amazing.. the fuel mileage was significantly worse on the last leg
  24. OK took a ride this weekend to help my cuzin get his bike back together and hang out. On my way there the first tank of gas I ran out at 65-70 mph and got 43 mpg. The second tank was ran out at 75-80 mph and I got 33 mpg. On the way home today I ran 70 mph all the way home and got 40 mpg. Is it normal for a first gen to get such varying mpg and espcially such a drastic change when over 75 mph. it all seems to be pulling fine with plenty of power all the way through the gears. Just been wandering as I have niticed varying changes in fuel economy but this is the first time I ve been able to get a hold on the mph to mpg issue. Tahnks for all and any answers. David
  25. Hello All, 1st, thanks to those who have helped in my search and evaluation posts. I promised some pix of the "New" bike, sop here they are. It is a 1987 model, 89K miles, ridden but apparently not abused. I looked at several low miles bikes but they had been sitting too long with issues. This bike feels like a well worn glove. It starts easy, runs great. I do have a warped rear brake disk which makes the brake pulse. The plastics are cracked, but I got this bike so cheap- $2200- that I felt I could live with some cosmetic issues. The original tape player works, and I have been listening to Who's "Quadrophenia" for days now. The radio works, but the digital window is not illuminated. The bike came with a bag that has the headset com units, but I have not tried it. The CLASS semms to work, but the toggle between front and rear is slow and a little flaky. Pressure seems to hold when it finally sets. The trunks are clean with no cracks. Wow, this engine / tranny chips. You'd think they would have called it the "Freebird" or something. I'm glad I didn't buy the Gold Wing- Those big heads sticking out really warmed up my boots and got in my way of shifting/ braking. This Yammer is much better! There is some surface rust on screw heads, etc., but it comes off with my thumbnail. Can anyone tell me a good polish? Also, in the one picture is the handlebar. The finish is bad. Time to get out the grinder? Steel wool and clear epoxy? Suggestions on technique? Hey- what is that hole for in the left console for? The CB does not work, so I bet the com unit doesn't either. Oh well. I need a good "sticky" new front tire. I don't care if it costs more, I want to corner this hog. Gas mileage seems real bad- 30 mpg. i didn't buy it for economy, but will I have to go real slow and shift at 2k rpm to get the 45 mpg that others claim? So many questions. I'll try to find answers within, but some things on my searches are coming up blank.
