  1. One of my coworkers just called and asked about the warrenty on a Star bike. He knew I try to keep up on stuff and we had talked in the past about the RSV and the 5 year coverage on it. He's looking at the 900cc to 950cc range models and is getting two different stories on them from two different dealers. One said one year and the other said two years. And of course they were both pushing the extended coverage. I'm not up to date on the other models and I can't find what I'm looking for on the net yet. Anybody got an answer?
  2. When I look up parts and stuff online, I see two models listed- VENTURE ROYALE - XVZ1300DT - 1987 or VENTURE ROYALE - XVZ1300DTC - 1987 What is the difference? Thanks
  3. I do not yet own this bike but I am looking at buying it. In the "known problems" thread, there is this: Stators. Early models suffered from stator failure due to over heating. Later models incorporated an oil cooling system. What years? On a 80's honda goldwings, you have to drop the engine or put on an external alternator kit which costs $600 and robs you of 6 m.p.g. It is so common of a problem, I don't want to own one. I'm going to South Mexico, and I do not want to face this problem. So. What years, and what is the fix? Do you need larger stators to take care of accessory lights and gadjets? Should I not add them? Is there anything else I need to look at closely on this bike?
  4. Has anyone ever removed the UGLY, BIG, Takes Up Too Much Room speedometer on the Gen II ? I don't care for the lower pods (intake stuff?) nor the funky speedometer unit on my bike. I think I need to make a trade with someone who has a nice Gen I and wants a newer bike. I think I like the looks of the early models better. ALTHOUGH..... mine is running great now that I had it worked on yesterday
  5. although i am never lost and never have to stop and ask where the nearest hotel is at 11pm when the wife quit talking to me an hour earlier i still started looking at gps units for the bike. i was thinking of garmin but the waterproof models are a little spendy. i wouldn,t mind getting the cheaper models but can,t find a waterproof mount for them. anybody come across any aftermarket bike mounts that could work. my wife thanks you. al
  6. I have a 97 RSTD.It seems to lean a little to much for me. I have heard their is a difference in length and they are longer on the later models. Does anyone have any input into this. I think the 05 models have a longer stand. If this is so does any one have one the would like to part with.I really would like to find a longer kick stand. Thanks all, Steve
  7. I think I'm on the right track here but want to the check. Looks like I might be in the market for a TCI for my '84. From the info I am looking at I know that the 26 series will only work on an '83. Figures. I just happen to have a good working 26H in my parts storage. The bike starts and idles very well with that one plugged in but the advance settings are different. The 41 series will work in all 1200 and 1300 models 1984 thru 1987 from my cross reference info. As for the 41R-82305-11-00, or 10-00, or 09-00 and such that is just the minor changes from year to year from the makers right? I'm seeing TCI's with labels that only show 41R-10 or 41R-11. What is the info on that desigination? Just trying to be sure of what I'm buying. Anybody want to do some horse trading for a 26H? Mike
  8. Did any of you see this? Tell me it is not so... http://www.dailycomet.com/article/20090228/ARTICLES/902289930 Children’s ATV sales banned throughout the nation Matt Stamey/Staff http://www.dailycomet.com/apps/pbcsi.dll/bilde?Site=HC&Date=20090228&Category=ARTICLES&ArtNo=902289930&Ref=AR&MaxW=600&border=0Glenn Diedrich, owner of Cycle World, hangs a warning tag onto a Honda motorcycle on the floor of his store Wednesday afternoon. ATVs and dirt bikes intended for children under 12 have been banned nationwide. The bike he’s hanging the tag onto is just above the size that’s been banned. If you’re interested in buying a dirt bike or all-terrain vehicle for a child, you’re out of luck.A new federal law bans the sale of off-road vehicles for kids under 12, part of a broader measure aimed at preventing lead poisoning in children. Retailers say the law is overly broad and children have a miniscule risk of lead exposure from engine components and other parts of the vehicles. “It’s absolutely ridiculous,” said Glenn Diedrich, owner of Cycle World at 5509 W. Park Ave., whose business sold the children’s models until the law took effect Feb. 10. “You’re not going to see a child biting the fender or licking the cylinder.” The federal Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, born amid outcries over children getting sick from lead components in toys imported from China, puts in place new strict standards for testing and safety in a wide range of toys used by children, including ATVs. For now, all models must be pulled until tests can be developed to detect lead, or until industry advocates succeed in getting models exempted from the law. That means retailers across the country, like Diedrich, are stuck with inventory sitting in their showrooms that they might not ever be able to sell. The law could cost the industry $1 billion for this year alone, according to an estimate from the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America and the Motorcycle Industry Council. Diedrich last week showed a reporter some of the models, which include dirt bikes that look like smaller versions of lighter motorcycles as well as four-wheeler ATVs. The law , he is certain, will have a major impact on his 42-year-old business. Typically, he sells just over 100 of the bikes per year for between $1,100 and $3,000, and they’re particularly hot around Christmas, he said. In January, the junior-sized models made up about 10 percent of his business. Since the law took effect, he’s had to turn away about half a dozen potential customers. He can change a tire or the oil on the devices but is prohibited from selling any parts or performing any other service on the bikes. Safety advocates call the new restrictions a double-edged sword. They could help discourage children’s use of the vehicles, said Sarah Anders, executive director of Louisiana Safe Kids, a coalition of public, private and voluntary organizations aimed at decreasing accidental injuries among children. But young ones may just climb onto adult vehicles and put themselves even more at risk, they say. “I believe all that’s going to do is (have) the children riding ill-sized units,” said Alicia Toups, chairwoman of the ATV committee of the regional Safe Community Task Force. “Make sure they’re on the correct size vehicle or not at all.” Diedrich, who regularly teaches ATV-safety programs, said his customers act responsibly and know how to operate them safely. He also makes sure children are matched to a correct device with power levels appropriate for their age. They should also use the appropriate safety gear and wear a helmet. “They understand how these units are used,” Diedrich said of his customers. Kids “can learn how to ride these bikes safely.” The Associated Press contributed to this report
  9. Can anybody give me the Engine RPM in gears at speeds of the 06 07 and 08 models. As on the newer models, 4th and 5th gears are overdrive. I'm interested, in Rpm at say 55, 65, and 70 mph, running in 4th and 5th gear. I understand that the ratios were changed in I believe 03 or 04, so those bikes would be turning lower RPM's on average at normal highway cruzing speeds. My 89 is usually turning about 3800 rpm in 5th, at 65 mph. I'm wondering how this compares to an 07 or 08. Why ? Engine RPM effects the Amperage output of the Stator. I'm trying to figure out just what the reduction in STATOR output amperage, is on the new bikes verse the old bikes, due to the Lowered Gear Ratios. ?? Thanks, any info appreciated !
  10. Greetings Not wanting to spend $400 to $700 on a GPS. I'm wondering is anyone using non-motorcycle GPS's? If so what model's, brightness, clarity, that sort of thing. Let me know what you think. Thanks
  11. I know I can't be the only guy walking around like a cowboy after a nice warm ride on the sled. Somedays can be brutal. Dam global warming. And if I don't have the wife with me to ask, I'm paranoid it looks liked I've P'd myself! Anyways I disgress........ A buddy of mine riding a '08 Ultra has these very neat looking devices called saddle shileds, and they work! But of course, they only come available for HD's ... but different models. http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/0/scID/0/IMID/835 The above is a link to the Kuryalyn website where the saddle shields reside. My question: Would anyone know if the '05 RSV frame just in front of the seat, where these doohickies (technical lingo) connect is the same size or (can I dream - configuration) as any known HD's? I figure if anyone can help it would be some Super Venturer. Thanks either way.
  12. I'm going to temporarily suspend lift adapter production due to me needing to finish my kitchen & utility room remodeling and the upcoming hunting season. I do have a couple of the Standard models boxed and ready for shipping but no Freestanding models until I purchase more steel and get them built. Hopefully I'll have some more ready before Thanksgiving but deffineately before the 1st of next month. At any rate they'll be available for putting under the X-Mas tree. Thanks in advance, Larry
  13. Why are 86-93 VENTURES considered 1st generation Ventures ? Shouldn’t they be considered 2nd gen’s and the 99 and newer models be called 3rd gen’s? After all the 83-85 bike had smaller saddlebags and only 1200cc motors VS. 1300 cc’s and larger bags on 86-93. And as I understand it there are more items that are different than just motor and bags on the 83-85 and the 86-93 models. So why do we do this?
  14. Hey, am new to this site but have been involved with the Royal Star family for any years. Got back into biking with an '85 VR that I eventually sold and replaced with a '98 RSTD which I currently am riding. My ? is this, particularly from those who are still starry eyed over the 1st Gen models. Although I like my '98, I like the looks, amenities, and touring package that is 1st gen. As I research these bike hindsight bring out various imperfections in certain year models and I am curious about your opinions of which year models of the 1st gen bikes may have been a step up or better refined than the others. Appreciate you input.
  15. I just called Yamaha USA headquarters in California and, after about 10 minutes of maneuvering, I was able to have a nice conversation with a lady with Star Motorcycle development. I told her I own a 2005 BMW K1200LT and enjoy the ride, but I'm interested in purchasing a new long distance touring bike soon with better dealer support, lower maintenance costs and ease, and more available accessories. I told her I was very interested in the 2009 Star Venture models and she said there would be a public introduction of all 2009 Star models in mid-September of this year. I clarified by saying I am hoping if I wait to make a decision, the 2009 Venture could have refinements like EFI and upgraded electronics and entertainment. She did not say anything for a moment and then responded that all the "changes to the Venture model" would be announced in mid-September. She said she knows if I delay purchasing a new bike for a while, "I will be very pleased with a new 2009 Venture." She was very friendly but became somewhat cautious at the end of our call and took my name and number before we concluded our conversation. I didn't pressure her for any more information. So based on this conversation, I could conclude three things: 1. By mid-September all remaining 2009 Star Models will be announced. 2. There will be a 2009 model of the Royal Star Venture. 3. There may be significant changes to the 2009 Venture model. For what it's worth......
  16. Early bulletin from Honda on the 2009 Models: http://powersports.honda.com/motorcycles/touring_sport_touring/model.asp?ModelName=2009+Gold+Wing+Audio%2FComfort%2FNavi%2FXM&ModelYear=2009&ModelId=GL18HPNM9 See if you can tell by looking at the link what they added to the 2009 Goldwing. Other new news from Honda – the DN01 (Cool looking Automatic bike) is coming to the US. That’s about it (besides a few new dirt bikes – fuel injected). Honda’s official announcement is next week. Also – the new Suzuki’s are out. There is a new Boulevard M90 and a smaller Boulevard M50 (Black and Limited models as well) and new colors. The GXR1000 has been redone and there is a new standard model called the Gladius. Stuart
  17. I was wondering if anyone knew when Yamaha...excuse me...Star Motorcycles is going to release the 2009 models on their website. I am kinda ichin' to see what new stuff (or not) that they are coming out with.
  18. are these mufflers direct bolt on replacements for a first gen? http://www.macperformance.com/store/category.cfm?SID=3&Category_ID=912&Catlevel=3 wondering because it says they fit ''all models''
  19. Greetings... Does anyone know of where we can find a detailed listing of the differences between different models and years of the various 1st gens? has anyone compiled such a list? I have found lists of what the various models and years are called etc, but no details of how or what they differ. For example - If I were buying parts for my 89VR on Ebay - what parts from a seller parting out an 88 or an 87 would I NOT want to buy? I know that most of the fairing parts, for example. are pretty much identical - from 83-85 and 86-93, and a lot like front turn signal lenses - are identical in all years. I guess what I'm really interested in knowing is are there any known "this part ONLY fits an 19XXVR and no other year" type of situation. I'm guess I'm asking because I see that each year has it's own service manuals, etc - and parusing them, I really don't see any differences between them!
  20. Just posting this info for general information - no particular reason (all comments below apply to the US49 models, I did not look at the CA models): I spent some time comparing the Yamaha parts breakdown for the carburetors on various years and models of the Royal Stars. The most interesting and puzzling fact I found is that ALL Royal Star VENTURES have three different sized main jets between the four carburetors! Cylinders 1 & 2 use a #122.5 jet, Cylinder 3 uses a #117.5 jet, and Cylinder 4 uses a #120 jet. To complicate this explanation a bit further, each carb shows three different jets that are labeled as "Jet, main," of which two are always the same in all four carbs, but the third one is different! For example, the parts breakdown for an 05 RSV shows item 26 as Jet, main #85, item 27 as Jet, main #140, and item 29 as Jet, main #120 (UR #4), #117.5 (UR #3), and #122.5 (UR #1,2). Confused yet? I am. The maintenance specifications in the shop manual only shows one main jet (with the different sizes for each cylinder), so the other two that the parts breakdown lists as main jets are misnomers. The part numbers for the carburetors on the Venture have changed several times (99-04 same part number, 05-07 same part number, and 08 another new part number), but the jets are identical on all of them. I did not try to look close enough to find out what parts did change with the new carb part numbers. The RSTDs have a different carb part number than the Ventures, but the jets are identical. The other Royal Star models BEFORE the Venture all used the same main jet size in all four carburetors. In 1999, the Royal Star Boulevard, Tour Classic, AND Tour Deluxe all used 4 #117.5 main jets, but the 1999 Venture was the first one to use the three different jet sizes. For the life of me, I don't have a clue why the two left cylinders should use the same jet size, but each of the right side cylinders has a different size (one larger and one smaller)??? But they do. Wish I had an exhaust gas analyzer; if I did, I would play around with seeing what happened if I set them all the same size. Goose
  21. I am seriously considering purchasing a mint 2003 Venture. I know they are wonderful bikes and that every bike no matter what it is has some ticks, issues and problems. I would like to know what this model's are. Thanks so very much in advance... George When I go, I want to go like my grandfather, quietly in his sleep. Not like the screaming passengers in his car.
  22. The older RSV midnight models came with a stock seat that did not feature the pillow look, It appears that this style seat is no longer available on the '08 models. It looks like the only option is for the pillow top (with indented buttons?) style seat. Can anyone offer a comparison of the "feel" between the two model seats?

Has anyone tried these? http://www.harrisonspecialties.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/48LEDwhiteOnVXII350.jpghttp://www.harrisonspecialties.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/48LEDwhiteLit350.jpg http://www.harrisonspecialties.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=48SideMountWhite&Category_Code=48LED One of our members here..(you know who you are dude!) built his own, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried some of these or similar models, and if they seem to help being noticed in traffic. I dont expect them to light up a dark road but maybe they will help get you noticed by the cagers. Nice thing about these, is that they wont over-tax your charging system. They are a bit spendy though. They have several different models, and colors, and the smaller bullet shaped red ones look like a good fit for a trailer. TIA.
  24. If you had your choice to buy a low mileage first gen what would it be? Some love the 83-85 models with 1200 engine and removable bags. Others like the 86-93 models, larger bags,1300 engine, with all the royal bells and whistles. I have both and there great bikes. A low mileage first gen is a great find.
  25. newbie here and a newbie venture owner... don't even have it in the Garage yet but already getting ready to customize it and have an exhaust question- I really like the look of the 4 into 4 slash cut exhaust setups I've seen on some of the models. Can anyone point me to brands, models, and recommendations for pipes of these types? Are there any that are quieter than others? I'm not a fan LOUD and actually prefer quiet most of the time but like to hear some rumble on acceleration. I owned a v65magna for years and loved how smooth and quiet it was heading down the highway... not necessarily looking for that, but not anything too loud... Looking forward to picking everyone's minds as i begin to customize my new ride- J 07 Venture Galaxy Blue
