  1. Two weeks ago my 09 VSR stopped running as battery was dead, and Kreggerdoodle came and saved my wife and I. The battery was original so, it was about 3 years old. So I bought a new battery from Wally World. The bike has been working fine and seemed to be running well and I have been checking with a volt meter so seemed to be charged, because the battery was @ 13 volts. My wife and I went from Katy to Lexington, TX, yesterday about 100 miles and as we got there the battery died on us again. We made it where we needed to be, after being stranded on the road for a short time. A very nice woman gave us a ride to where our friends were @ a bar b q cook off. My buddy took me to the bike where we jumped it and I brought it over to where they were at and I charged the battery for about 4 or 5 hours on a trickle charger. We started going home and made it about 60 miles and shed died on us again. Had to call AAA and had her towed home. So my question to everyone is: Does anyone have any suggestions as to what can be draining the battery or why it won't hold a charge, or not charging. The bike is still under warranty but I am reluctant to take it to the dealer as I like to fix things myself if possible. I would really appeciate any input I can get. Thanks, Hal
  2. Coming up on 16000 miles on my 06 RSV and the service manual says to repack the Rear Arm Pivot Bearing at 16000 miles. Maybe I'm missing it in the manual but I can't find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Problem solved! Bad eyesight lead to alignment problem. Corrected and works fine now. I know I have seen step by step instructions on swapping out the clutch basket but I can not find it. It may be on the other site I'm not sure. My 2001 Venture has gone from almost no whine when I bought it with 4,500 miles on it to screaming with almost 16,000 miles on it. My question is, Is the nut that holds the smaller disk basket into the larger clutch basket a standard thread or a reverse thread? I have tried with all my might to loosen it by turning it to the left. I even added a 3 foot piece of steel rod to it and it will not budge. With only 4,500 miles on it I don't know why anyone would have gone in there but I thick they did. I think they tightened it down with a lot more than 50 lbs of torgue. Non of the clutch disk are lined up as they should be. Evidently that is not important because it has been shifting fine for the last 11,000 miles. Any suggestions on which way to turn that nut and how to break it free would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Harry
  4. wife & daughter went to Mobile, Al on Sunday, she called today and said " what are you doing tomorrow" which right then I knew SOMETHING was up. I replied I'm working u know that... then she said "well I was HOPING you could come get me tomorrow" which I replied.... well I guess I can IF i need to, she said u need to... so I'm going to work early then as quick as I can get done I'm off to MOBILE, 287 miles 1 way...
  5. I'm new here and was wondering what is the most miles any1 put on their bike or has on their bike...I mean I've seen some Gold Wings with 160K + miles on them ....and what is CONSIDERED high mileage for a venture?
  6. if any of you are ever traveling through NW Alabama, or NE Mississippi and need any assistance or a stop over you have an open invitation. I live In Hamilton, Al which is 45 miles east of Tupelo, MS, 90 miles west of Birmingham, AL and 50 miles south of Florence Alabama ( trail of tears goes through Florence).... Just let me know and we'd welcome you ...got 2 spare BR and a large carport for the bikes... oh yea did I mention I'm a great cook I'm not much on fixing bikes, But I have 2 trailers and a pickup IF u are ever in the area and need HELP....
  7. will get in about 200 miles today....so all in all will be a pretty good weekend... but DANG it has been HOT riding lately.... was drained yesterday on 120 mile ride & that is unusual...rode 110 miles Friday and didn't go nowhere just puttering around ....have fun and keep the rubber side down.....
  8. Hey Ya'll! This is a fantastic site! this is a long thread to give a little background on my situation, and its raining so i have nothing better to do......sorry... I am a new rstd owner and a fairly new rider. I hadn't ridden for 25 years when i bought a vtx1300 last november and racked up 2500 miles over the winter (not crazy mileage, but that's a lot of 50 mile rides). brrrr!! but loved it! I went to get new rubber on the front of the VTX and was tooling around the Honda shop looking at bikes while I waited. I sat on a used '05 RSTD that i had seen many times at the shop and just sat there in awe thinking, "some day..." Well, much to my surprise the asking price was way less than i expected. It had everything on it that i wanted on my VTX so I traded up!! The day i went to pick it up, i fired it up and started to walk around the bike admiring how beautiful it was and getting really fired up! Then i noticed a gas leak from under the tank- kinda flowing off the petcock and dripping down on the cylinder vents. Abort mission, up on lift, tank off, let's figure this out. They said that the bike had been sitting and needed some gaskets replaced and also floats in the carbs. "it didn't do that when we tested it", "this happens when it sits for awhile", etc. Ok. get'r fixed. back on the vtx... Ok cool. Go back 5 days later and it is ready to go. Of course, it is not a v-twin so i had to get used to the differences in torque (i guess?) and running the V4 at higher rpms. When i got it out on the highway and started to crank the thottle it was not responding and I was having trouble getting it over 65mph?? wtf? Well, part of this was that i was shifting into overdrive (5th) at too low a speed and did not realize that 4th gear had that type of range to it, BUT OD was doing NOTHING?? I had the throttle pegged and NOTHING. I returned to the shop and they rode it- everything is fine. Put it on the Dyno, everything is fine. Ok, rode it again. NOPE, everthing is not fine, and returned to the shop and told them this can't be right? I only got 100 miles to a tank of gas??!?!?!?!. The mechanic rode it and came back and said you are not crazy, 5th gear is just dumping fuel into the carbs. Its not getting enough air. The mechanic said that the filters needed to be replaced as they were probably soaked with gas and it was limiting the airflow. it ran fine 1-4 but sputtered in 5th. Long story short, they put K&N's in it for me, the mechanic took it out and said all good and he had it over 100mph. It WAS noticeably better. loved it. nice power. learned to run higher rpms, pretty much never get it into 5th gear around town. daily rider. frickin' LOVE it!!! Also started to realize what a big friggin' windshield does to power?? never rode a bike with a windshied?? took it off one day and i was like- holy sh!t, this is the way it is supposed to run!! still though, no long highway miles... 1200 miles later, I was riding down toward Myrtle yesterday and the frickin wind was insane. Got the big windshield on and I am desperately trying to maintain speed and i am just getting slowed down and pushed back from 60 to 52, then hit an air pocket and speed up to 65. I am pogoing back and forth and starting to get irratated. Finally i just hammer the throttle in 4th to 65 and shift up to OD, and it just bogs down and sends me back down to 50... so... They question after this long frickin history of my life IS: Is it typical for the windshield to cause such powerloss in windy situations?? If so, why dosesn't the bike have enuff power to push thru the wind? Is there something wrong with carbs or an adjustment that needs to be made?? what the heck should it do?? if i have to take the windshield off to go 75 mph, doesn't that defeat the purpose?? I wanna ride out west this summer! This just doesn't seem right?? I appreciate your time in answering some questions for this newbie:depressed:! educate me VentureRider.org!!!!! Thanks! Pete
  9. I've got a 09 rsv that i bought brand new I'm now closing in on 65,000 miles mostly highway miles with a few floor board dragging racing down the back road miles what should I expect out of this bike as far as a clutch life? I bought this bike because my other one has a ton of miles on it and its not the most comfortable with plans of getting the gen 3 when they "or if" come out really don't want to rack up the miles just to stick a clutch in and sell it P.s clutch works fine at this point
  10. How many hours did it take you? What was your average speed? If you were planning on an 800 to 1000 miles without a layover any suggestions? I'm considering about 950 mile trip in one day. In Sept of 2010 I rode 2 days from Vacaville CA to Buckely WA. 1st Day was from Vacaville WA to Corvallis Or a total of about 525 miles. 2nd Day from Corvallis Or to Buckley WA Via I-5 to Portland OR then to The Dalles OR to Yakima WA for a total of 385 miles. Now prior to this I had not ridden for 27 years. All I did was take the m/c rider safety course. Flew down to Vacaville and rode about 1 hour. Then took off the next morning for Oregon. Oh I also had a 4 way bypass open heart operation about 4 months ago. Since this trip I've put on about 2500 miles. I'm thinking that I could do this 950 mile trip in one day or 18 hours. Oh I today just go my seat back from Butler Seat modification.
  11. Stopped in the local Yammie shop yesterday to check on something and just happened to see an 08 Venture sitting amoung the other bikes. I thought it might be new until I got closer and saw it was an 08 with 23,000 miles on it. It was priced at $12,999 and I was just curious if that was a good price and if anyone might be interested. 12. Dont know if this has been talked about allready but i have a rear tire that is cuping it only has about 2000 miles on it, just seen it today, any one have any ideas what can cause this ?
  13. Well yesterday the wife and I were headed out on a ride and a few miles into it the rain came down. With the wet roads the bike seemed to handle very funny so we stopped and I looked the bike over. Nothing obvious to be found. We take off and the bike felt like the back tire was going flat so we decided to go home and check the thing out. Well after putting it up on the lift and taking the bags off i found the problem. The wheel bearing was worn completely out. I could move the wheel up and down. This is now 1:30 pm on Saturday so by the time I figure out what all I am going to need to repair the thing it is gonna be to late to order parts and I don't want to be down a week. So I decide to text Mike (EUSA1) and see if he has an extra wheel. He calls me and and wants to know what's up. He then says I will come down when I get off work (he Lives 100 miles away) and bring, parts and a wheel just in case. Well he gets here and we get the wheel off and because the bearing has been going out for awhile it has destroyed the tire. Plenty of tread but flat spots on the side, middle and just real ugly..Mike says it would be easier if you had a new tire on his rim and then we could just put then different rim on since I needed a new tire anyway. So by now it is 6:00pm. I call a friend of mine who owns a Trike Shop where he converts 2 wheelers into 3 wheelers. He doesn't have a tire since he works on 3 wheelers but says if I can find a tire he will come down and open his shop so we can mount it. So I call another member Tim (mystor09) who lives about 8 miles away and he has a new tire and says come and get it and just order him another one and we are even. So from the time I find out the problem until it it is fixed takes about 6 hours with time off for some food, mike driving 100 miles and then us driving another 75 or so to get the tire and go to my buddies shop to mount it. I say I am lucky to have friends from this site who stepped up for me and got me rolling in such record time Thanks to everyone.
  14. My gas mileage has dropped and my bike isn't running smooth. The carbs have been synchronized so thats not the problem. I used to go 165 to 170 miles on a tank before switching to reserve but now am only going about 130 to 135 miles. When the weather was cold and I started the bike the left pipe purred fine. The right pipe would skip every now and then. The bike doesn't seem to have the power it had before and I am getting some vibration that I didn't have before. Any thoughts? I have an 05 RSV. BTW I have used seafoam and it didn't change anything. At the last service, 52,000 miles, the plugs where changed. Now have 56,000 miles.
  15. Jan and I had a wonderful day on the bikes! We rode with a group today and made the loop around the Great Salt Lake. We rode 425 miles today with stops at Promontory Point National Historical Site. Then on to Wendover, Nevada and had a great buffet dinner at the Rainbow Casino. We reached some milestones along the way. Jan broke in her new tire, in a big way. She showed some increased confidence in the corners, after her accident a couple of years ago. Also, Jan eclipsed 10K on her Sportster, all but 900 miles by her. Beautiful day!
  16. I completed part of my ride of the Tour of Honor to visit 7 memorial sites around Texas. I signed up for this ride back in Dec. The sites became available April 1st. Dave Zipcode and I attempted back on April 6th when he had his rear tire go flat on the way to the first site in Fredericksburg. Then he went down with his wife a week ago. Sure missed having him ride along, but glad he and Jamie are ok. I was planning to complete the ride of visiting all 7 sites in an Iron Butt Saddlesore 2000 in under 48hrs. The ride was good, turned Hot in North Texas, great weather, finished the required 4 sites in 1000 miles under the 24hr. Grabbed one more site north of Dallas at 12:30am. Headed for home, stopped for some rest along the way. Amazing you can fall alseep on the bike lying on the tank bag. By then I was up for over 24hrs. Got home after 27hrs on the road. Decided on not going to south Texas to grab the remaining 2 memorials. Needed to get some good rest. Was about 25 miles short of being able to submit the ride as a Bunburner 1500 in 36hrs. So I went for a short ride to get me over the #. Here are some pics of the memorial sites I visited.
  17. Any one else having a howling problem with the rear tire?. when cornering the sidewall makes some serious noise! I have about 6k miles on the tires, they are both E-3s air pressure is 39r/36f. just wondering if may be I have some thing going on?
  18. Hi, Find attached an mp3 audio file of me starting my bike. It's hard to describe but the bike will start, then die. I've put in a new sealed battery, changed the spark plugs and rode 40 miles yesterday with 1/4 can of seafoam in the tank. What do I need to look at next? Thanks chuk
  19. Sunday after getting the brakes blead, exhaust leak/backfire problem fixed and the rest of the body parts back on it was time to take her out on the road to see how she would do with the new Programmable TCI. So I called and arranged a hook up with RandyR in Dahlonga for the Bear On the Square Festival. (about a 75 mile one way trip) She deffinately had a lot more acceration in all ranges but it was not a smooth acceration. It felt as if the bike was surging or lunging forward as it was cruising and accerating with a jerky reaction. When I would gun it, it the would increase RPM but it felt like the clutch was slipping a little and would have to catch up with the the engine to take off. The gas consumption was rapid. Since the bike had been sitting for about a year with an empty tank and the new gas in that first tank and was mixed about 3 gal of gas to 1/2 can of seafoam I'm not discounting the possibility of some moisture in the tank and fuel system. I'm thinking I need to run a few tank full of gas to see if it improves. While in Dahlonga we did hook up Randy's carb tune and the carb sync was pretty close to where it should be. The second tank of gas without sea foam got 94 miles to 3.699 gallons of gas. Monday ride to work and back (20 miles each way was a little better but not 100%. Now on the third tank. My next steps are to replace in lin fuel filter and fresh fluid and blead on the clutch line. Any other ideas.
  20. I read.through a good bit, let me tell you what is going on. 84 VR Brake pedal bottoms out no pressure, had it earlier on first ride. Fronts, po had not tightened the caliper hoses completely and I know I'm going to have to change contaminated pads and bleed. All this in the first 40 miles....... Any tips ect on the bleeding and the rear and front left are what I am most concerned about. Thanks, first post Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
  21. I am wondering if my bikes fuel gauge is operating normally. Someone in another post said with one or two bars left on the fuel ga. they had gone 110 miles. My gauge, with two bars left, only takes about 2.5 gals to fill it back up. Is this normal with these gauges? My trip odometer does not work, however, a round trip to work and back is about 100 miles. When I refill, it usually takes about 2.5 gals.
  22. Well we made it to Arkansas dodging rain, hail, and tornado's on the way down last weekend. We arrived to our cabin to find out that the owner had no idea what a touring motorcycle was. Our cabin was straight up the side of the hill. It was wet and we were pulling trailers. Very challenging to get there and I emailed them and told them to tell others that it was not safe for bikes. Other than that we had a great time and the cabin was wonderful and secluded. We rode about 1500 miles around Arkansas and enjoyed every road we were on (except the cabin hill climb). Weather was wonderful and sunny. Left Marshall Arkansas Saturday morning around 9:30 am and arrived home at 9:30 pm. It was a long day, rode a little over 600 miles and it was cold later in the day. Some pictures below
  23. Well this is very odd.. Its happened more than once this year where I would pull in for fuel, top right up to the gunnels and when I ride away, for the next 2 to 4 miles down the road, the gauge will read two to three bars down from full.. then slowly add bars until full bars are showing. I'll arrive at destination, 12 or 20 miles down the road, shut off the bike and then roll away after a while.. the fuel gauge shows 1/2 full bars.. but only 20 miles total run since fill up.. then the bars creep up to full or down one bar. Something is sticking.. On a long round about right hand turn off the highway, with the bike leaning hard to the right side, the fuel gauge once again read much lower that it should have for the amount of distance travels but the bars didn't increase. Its doesn't happen all the time, can't seem to pin it down to any specific conditions.. but oddly enough, my buddy with his 2008 does the same thing from time to time.. His bike did this often last summer but it cleared itself.. Any idea what we might start looking at to start trouble shooting this issue? 15 days to road trip, it's something I'd love to clear up.. Cheers
  24. Perhaps some of you know my friend Lumpy (Bill Kahley) suffered a bizarre motorcycle accident last September. He was riding his 1984 Venture, returning from a Ride-In in Indiana to his home in the Quad Cities, Illinois when it happened just a couple miles from his home. A lightning bolt struck the Interstate roadway directly in front of him, sending basketball sized chunks of pavement into Lumpy's face...at seventy miles per hour. He was severely injured and has spent the last 7 months in intensive care and rehabilitation. He is still in a skilled nursing/rehabilitation facility and in a wheelchair, although unable to maneuver himself. Some of his friends have started an online fundraising event to help defray the costs. Please consider contributing toward this worthy endeavor to help a fellow Venture rider (though not a VentureRider). Thank You. http://lumpy.bbnow.org/index.php Fundraiser for Lumpy lumpy.bbnow.org
  25. HI, I'm looking to get back to riding after a several year hiatus. I'm looking at a 99 Venture, and wanted to ask if I could impose on the great members here to tell me if it sounds like a reasonable deal? It's a 99, wine red over silver, from the original owner. It's got 31K miles. It's got passing lamps, saddle bag rails, luggage rack, turn down pipes, the Harley lights added to the back brake lights, the original seats but an added riders backrest. All the electronics work, including the intercom system. The only two things I know about being wrong are the left wind deflector has a crack, and there is a small leak from the clutch cylinder that appears to be from around the O-ring. The tires and brakes were apparently put on new about 4K miles ago. I'm going to try to attach a couple of pics, I hope I do this right. Can anyone suggest anything I should check on or make sure of with a 99 RSV? Would this bike for $6000 be a reasonable deal?
