  1. Is anyone here running the Baron 4-2-4 Nasty Boy Slip-On pipes on their Venture? If so.......What did you use for a gasket where the pipes actually slip on the exhaust pipe? I have hunted high and low and cannot find, or even determine, if gaskets are needed for these Slip On pipes. Thanks for any info/responses. Regards...........Boomer
  2. Has anyone here done a linked brakes modification? Any observations or comments? Does it cause problems in slow speed handling (I am used to back brake only at low speed)? Does it make the pedal feel spungy due to the additional piping?
  3. The one thing that throughs me a bit when I get my 89 VR after riding one of my other bikes is how at low speed manuvering the feeback from the handlebars feels very squishy. In fact if you have the bike on the center stand and wobble the handlebars as if they were going into a tankslapper you can really feel the movement in the hanelbars vs the wheel. My understanding is that it is the rubber mounting of the handlebars but it seems to be a bit too much in my opinion. Do you guys have the same feel? Have you jsut got used to it or can it be modified? thanks all Bob
  4. I replaced my headlight with the H4. Last night I went out for a ride to check it. I got better visibility when it was in low beam than when it was in high beam. I checked and both elements are lighting up on high beam so I know the bulb is okay. I adjusted the headlight both up and down and still get the same results. Is it possible to put the H4 bulb in so that it would be 180 degrees out (or upside down so to speak)? When I look at the bulb on high beam it seems that the high beam filament is below the low beam element.
  5. Hi everyone, I think this is my first post. I had my low beam go out on my 83 Venture. I replaced the bulb and noticed the next time I hit the low beams it was again not working. I bought another H4 60/55 and immediately check the low beam and it's still not working. I've adjusted the headlight lower so that the high beam doesn't blind oncoming drivers but this also restrict the range that is lit when driving at night. Has anyone had this problem or any ideas what may be causing this problem.
  6. Hi to all, I recently cheeped out and bought a battery from Advance Auto parts with a copon I got in the mail for my 87' VR. (total cost: $28.00) When I went to remove the old battery the resistor that goes to the plug for the battery fell apart in my hand! The plug into the battery is good and the wire to the resistor is still there. Now with the new battery I get the dredded "Battery Fluid Low" Icon on the dash. Lonestarmedic was kind enough to send me the post on removing the battery fluid low resistor out of the electrical system but I am thinking that since I still have a "wetcell" battery, the sensor would be a good thing. Does anyone know what size/value resistor goes in this circut so I can replace it? Or does anyone have the entire plug/ resistor line that they would like to sell? When Jean and I go for a ride, she keeps looking over my sholder and says... whats wrong with the battery, didn't you just replace it? (like 43 times!) Thanks in advance for any light anyone might be able to shed on this problem. Earl and Jean
  7. My low beam went out on me last night, but the high beam still worked. Had two things in my favor, 1) I was only 15 minutes or so from home and 2) have the driving lights, so I had a low beam for oncoming traffic. Looked up in the manual for some info on changing the bulb and it's an easy procedure, as long as the fairing isn't in the way. I don't have real big hands but it was a challenge to get at it from behind. Anyways got the bulb out. Came out here to see if there were any little secrets to the install, seems like everything I found online, was what I was experiencing first hand (no pun intended). I have an '01 RSV, so I'm going to assume that all the 2nd gens are the same. The adjusting knob for the the headlight slides off easily, you'll pick up some extra room to slide your hand in, install the new bulb and hook everything back up. Then just push the adjusting knob back on, it's just like a knob on a stove, has a flat side so just make sure you put it back on correctly.
  8. Sorry I haven't updated you lately. Since I cleaned the tank, filter, and carbs, my bike is running good. Still not the best, I know I can do better. However, I do have a curious question. Every once in a while, it will just lug and die. Kind of like it runs out of gas. but then after about 2 minutes, it starts right back up. ALSO, there are times that my lights dim really bad at low rpm but brighten right back up when I rev to about 1500 rpm. any ideas? Thanks Merlin
  9. Bought a 1986 Venture around two months ago. So far all I have done is some local riding one up for the most part. Welp, it did it's first good sized ride two up this past weekend. The wife and I went a ways up the Blue Ridge Parkway and did some camping up on Mt Mitchell. Worked like a top I must say but I do have a couple of questions the first being a very low speed wobble/sensitivity when loaded up. I know it was due to the extra weight {we were loaded up fairly heavily} and having a passenger but still,,,, very low speed stuff was irritating/scary. The second gripe was a fairly low cruising range. The bike seemed to average right around 35mpg over a few tanks and I know that seems low but I was riding loaded down with camping gear and a passenger and it was curvy mountain roads. Anyway, seems the "E" flashes {fuel bars disappear} right around 150 miles. The manual states the fuel capacity is 5.5 gallons but even with the gage stating empty for quite some time {very nervous times at that} I could only get around 4-4.5 gallons in the tank. Heck,,, my FJR can easily go 250 miles and as much as 280 miles between fill ups. Even my DR650 will do around 180-200 miles. You would think that a "touring" bike would have more range but then again,,,,, it is a 22 year old touring bike.
  10. I have this bike posted in the classifieds. Just wanted to give you all a brief description of the bike. First it has very low miles (4120) always garaged and covered. Never had a water hose to it, all done by hand washing and waxing. Ton's of extra's included along with the original parts that were removed. I can provide more pictures if needed just e-mail or call number in ad. If you know any one looking for one this is one sweet deal. And IM willing to negoiate (a little) many extra's not listed include co2 cartridge gun for filling tires on road,Tire sealent 3 bottles. Just to many to list but they all go with the bike. I hate to let go of her but the other her has more pull!!! Thanks for your time.
  11. Since This Is My First V Four Need To Ask Some Dumb Questions. Is It Common For The Venture To Have An Occasional Backfire. Always On The Right Cylinder Bank. Usually Only Until It Warms Up. Sometimes A Backfire When Cranking. Sometimes Slight Backfire On Decel At Low Speeds. 2500 Miles On Engine. Installed New Plugs Since Carb Float Has Stuck One Time. Thanks For Any Info.
  12. I put a new Dunlop 404 on last year, I put about 3500 miles on it and it needs to be replaced. Is that a little low miles for a new tire.
  13. Just talked to the owner of an 1986 Venture(plain NOT Royale) in Princeton Ontario for anyone looking in this area. Is kind of pricey . Asking price is negotiable $5500can. ONLY 25000klms(original according to owner) Been sitting for roughly 5 years so carbs need to be cleaned, needs tires and general TLC. Has new battery. Would like to buy myself to keep as low klm bike but no money. Looks to be in good shape for someone that wants low klm bike.
  14. Hi folks, "Captain Inept" here. Been farting around with these new saddlebag lower rails and I just cannot seem to get them low enough so that they follow the bottom "line" of the bags. As soon as I start to tighten them :confused24:they raise up ..... tried adjusting the mounting bars as low as possible.. still no go! Any ideas, someone MUST of ran into this before? thanks
  15. I would like to improve the Tone of the exhaust more than the loudnes..... Heard the clips of the Baron 4-2-4's on the site but couldn't find how the Bub slipons sound..... Any comparisons or comments? I am looking for a low rumble which will not tire me out on a long trip. Hate that half deaf feeling with a just off the boat feel from loud pipes which screw up your ballance...?
  16. Hey all, This is my first post. Mostly cause there is 100 feet of 2 feet deep snow between my bike and the driveway, so even thinking of the bike depresses me:-) What a winter!!! ( I walked out to the shed this morning and the snow is rock hard. Hardly made a footprint so no hope of shoveling it) I really like this site. I have found answers to many questions just by reading the forums. I ride an '07 Midnight Venture. Love the ride. Had an '85 Wing before and there is no comparison. My wife doesn't hound me to pull over after an hour on the road any more. Some days I can't get her off it... Question is: What is a good pump to get for the air suspension? Especially the front. They are hard to get at and because the pressure is so low, just disconnecting the air hose changes the pressure drastically. Tried the dealer here but they aren't much help. Thanks, John
  17. I am installing passing lights. Does anyone know what the law is in Ontario Canada with regards to when they can be on. Ie; with hi beams on, low beams on or all the time. I would prefer all the time but dont want to get a ticket. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jim
  18. Went out to check the battery on the 86 this afternoon, powered up fine, but since the last time I turned the key about a month ago, it has decided that the low brake fluid light should be on. I read a few threads here this afternoon, found the rear resevoir was a bit low, brought it up, no change. Now, I read something about a possibility of resoldering the computer? Are there any threads that deal directly with that? I couldn't find any, and not that I"m really looking to do something like that, it would be good to at least have the reference. Thanks. Joe
  19. There is a new vehicle that is about to hit the U.S. market next year called the Loremo, which stands for Low Resistance Mobile. It is a German design that was built on seeking the following criteria, engine efficiency, low weight (might be tough is the Northern climates or windy parts of the country), and minimal drag efficiency. The car gets between 130 to 150 miles per gallon and is expected to hit the U.S. market for sale sometime next year. Base price of the first model is pegged at $22,000 which makes it very affordable. Below is a site where you can check out the car and multi paged article about it. Site also has several pictures as well. So...read the article and tell us what do you think? http://editorial.autos.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=457882
  20. my son-enlaw and I are planning another trip to the east coast [miami beach]..last year we took i-40 ,,,this year we will be taking the low road .just wondering if any knows of any thing that is a must see down that way?
  21. Does it matter what type or brand of coolant I use in my RSTD. A friend of mine tells me to use the honda coolant because it will not damage the water pump (Contains low or no silicate). Owners manual just calls for regular 50/50 coolant. What are you folks using ?? Thanks: Will
  22. If you had your choice to buy a low mileage first gen what would it be? Some love the 83-85 models with 1200 engine and removable bags. Others like the 86-93 models, larger bags,1300 engine, with all the royal bells and whistles. I have both and there great bikes. A low mileage first gen is a great find.
  23. Could a few of you with the Mk1 (early model) Ventures, please do some electrical readings at the headlight plug. What I am trying to determine, is mine the only one with power on the low beam, in addition to the high beam. With my results below, no wonder my high beam is so bright. I want to install a headlight modulator / relay on my 83VR. It works great on the low beam side, but have nothing on high beam due to excessive low beam voltage also present, shutting the unit off. I have tested the unit on another bike (83 750 Maxim) & it works great. My Voltage readings was as follows, at the bikes headlight plug. Switch on Low Beam Low output 11.8V High output 3.58V Switch on High Beam Low output 10.54V High output 11.49V I probably should look inside the switch, as well, to check things there too.
  24. my knowledge of the mechanic's of motorcycle's can fit on my thumb. i have a 2007 venture with 250 miles on it the bike wouldn't turn over the battery i thing needs charging it seems to be straining. i believe the battery is under the seat? how do i get to it also there's a coolant reservior that is low because i took off the two side panels, i can ride like hell but the rest ? help!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks to anyone who can help
  25. Can anyone out there tell me more about Levelling links. Are they useful, do they make the bike more stable, easier to handle at low speeds? Please let me know, thanks in advanve for your input. Joopster
