  1. Here are some photos from the Newport Motorcycle Rally. It was a scorcher so the crowds were not like they usually are. We however, were there every day and stayed to midnight. There was a lot of good music, and we met a lot of really friendly folks. Motorcyclists are great people. Yama Mama http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a200/RonnieY/Newport%202010/
  2. how about accepting Canadian Postal codes also? There are a LOT of us Canucks here!
  3. Folks, it's getting down to the wire, and to date there have only been 18 people registered for the rally. A lot of work has gone into this by Cupcake (Damn, don't think I'll ever get used to that), Leadwolf and a lot of others to put this event together. So, if you are planning on attending, PLEASE get you registration in soon.
  4. Saw this bike at A&M Cycles in Amarillo. They do a lot of my work. Enjoy.
  5. Hello All, Looking to replace the stock medium windshield on my 96 RS Boulevard with a Cee Bailey tall (24") windshield ( a lot cheaper than OEM) and would like looking for feedback.
  6. Well showed up for my first ever Maintenance Day. Pulled into Don's place with my big, heavy trailer wondering what type of reception I would receive. First thing I noticed was a ton of Ventures parked everywhere and people standing everywhere! My girlfriend pointed out the place she wanted us to camp and hopped off to secure it leaving me to negotiate a turnaround! I drove down to the house expecting a turn around and ran right into a dead end with everyone looking. Great, just what I wanted a crowd to critique my turning capabilities with that heavy trailer! Fortunately several Venture riders jumped to my aide and with a lot of encouraging, but conflicting directions, and some pushing and pulling we got her turned around! I did not get a chance to get anyone's name and would have promptly forgot them anyhow but I do want to say a mighty THANK YOU!! The standard reverse that comes with these bikes just sucks and I would have been totally embarrassed without the aide. After camp set up we toured the bikes snapping pictures and got in line for the brake fluid change. Bobby, "Naked Rider" was kind enough to do the maintenance while letting me hold things, get in the way, and ask a lot of redundant questions! Not only was he tolerant but he also supplied me with some DOT4 since I had brought DOT3. Big Thanks, Bobby!! The I was ready for Ken, V7Goose, who was adjusting carb's. For those who have not meet Ken, you will find he is a very personable guy. This "guy" drives 1200 miles to this MD works tirelessly all through the day, puts up with ignorant people, asking all kind of questions, such as myself, and then is rewarded with a 1200 mile trip home! He sync my carbs adjusted my pilot screws, and taught me a little more about my bike. Freebird and I tried to quiz him about getting my AIS system off but he just wasn't biting!! By the way for all of us out there that owe Ken for working on our bikes he does like cigars! I plan on having some for him next MD! Besides the maintenance I finally got to meet some of the people from this website such as Earl "Skydoc". Earl has supplied a lot of us with an upgrade kit for our clutches and he had my correct size spring there. What a great guy he is. Learned a lot about brakes and clutches while talking with him. Then there was "Gunboat" or Don! After reading Don's comments about being a darksider I took the plunge and have not looked back. Enjoyed talking with him immensely! Like him I am fortunate enough to have a daughter, now 18, who still loves to go riding with me! Now that is a blessing!! During our conversation I told Don that a center stand for my bike was on my wish list. He is giving me his! Will not take payment for it just wants me to donate to this site! That is why I am a member here, people with hearts like Don's. Speaking of Don, there is the other Don, "Freebird" our host,! What a classy guy, very humble, feels honored to support us with this fantastic website! I so enjoyed listening to him and Rick Butler tell stories before we left the next day. Big, big Thanks to him and his wife for this shindig!!! I did not get to meet all! There was Carbon One who I had purchased some braces from. I was told he was there but did not catch up to him. (to busy running my mouth!) Did not see "Wanderer" either! I also am sure I have not thanked everyone who helped me out or took the time to say hi. What a great bunch!! For those who have not made the pilgrimage I highly recommend this annual MD. You will learn so much and meet the very best!!
  7. Well Dan and I made it back to south Ga about 1:30 this afternoon(Monday). We drove up in one day but took 2 to come back. Stopped off and saw a couple of sites along the way. Had a great time for the 2 days we were at Don's. Learned a lot about the bikes and the people that ride the bikes!I'd like to echo what a lot of others have already said. Thanks to Don and his wife Eileen for putting up with this crazy group of friends, brothers, and sisters. You are all the greatest!! I enjoyed meeting as many of you as I did. I hope we can all do this again next year.
  8. Which drink holder do you have (and it has to save mpg too ) I know I probably won't get a lot of responses right now due to MD, but gotta ask while I am still thinking about it.
  9. has any one ever used one of these to do the brakes on a first generation? im working on flushing the whole brake system to stop this overheating locking up problem. it looks like a good one man operation tool. and for 40 bucks a good investment i think? it wont over fill the master i hope? its hot out there today not even high noon and 80 whew and no shade trees where i live i just got a small off street lot to work on. i swear you can see heat deamons comming off that lot. so im thinking late evening or early morning monday. and i will pick up this tool if it meets the ventures aproval here
  10. Motorcycle Tom and us saw this in a parking lot this afternoon. Cracked us up!!!
  11. Well i am still breathing no matter what Mother Nature do's , i left Fulton TX. Fri. afternoon to beat the storm , got to Beeville TX. and needed gills stayed the nite in pleasentville next day ran down hwy 90 through Choke canyon met a lot of Boarder Patrol , if you pulled over , there would be one there in 2 mins , witch very ruff on old man full of soda pop , anyway nite 2 i got lucky and got the last room at the Days Inn in Ft. Stockton Tx. it was full of Storm Chasers , they were in the parking lot taking pics of the clouds and watching their radar , just a peachy place to spend the nite , i slept VERY well ! the next day [ today ] left in the fog , up to Roswell made a left on hwy 380 over to Hondo a great ride , than down to White Sands , HOT AND SUN BURNT , Wally's brand of spray on sun block don't work ! OCH ! going to try for Page AZ. tomorrow . Thom
  12. Got to take a test ride on a '09 Voyager. Was out for about an hour ... the only thing I didn't get to test was climbing hills. Following is just my opinion... Pro's Well balanced, ample power, comfortable seating/leg/arm position. Feels and handles more like my '85 Venture without the top heaviness ... in other words, it felt a lot lighter. Handled the twisties nicely and felt stable when going over bumps in a twisty. Smooth ride on the highway @ 160km/h (thanks to a 6th gear). Rumbles along nicely in 5th at lower speeds and accelerates reasonably well. Great stereo sound quality. Nice exhaust sound Seat is very comfortable. Engine/drivetrain is relatively quiet compared to the RSV Nina experienced less wind buffeting than on the RSV No "buzzing" feeling in hands or feet Seating is lower for both rider and passenger. I felt a lot more "in control" with this bike...it was very easy to drive and a lot better in parking lot maneuvers than the RSV. Frame mount fairing .... bike is very stable in turbulence. Tracks very well. Con's It's a V-twin so under hard acceleration, you know it's a V-twin. Lots of reflection of the chrome parts on the tank in the windshield. Seating/leg position for passenger is not as comfortable as the RSV (at least according to Nina but she is taller than most women) I experienced more side wind than on the RSV Not as powerful as the RSV but it still gets ya going quick enuf. Clunky shifting, probably just a "nature of the beast" Definately not as smooth as the RSV but that's what ya get with 2 cylinders versus 4 although I found the Harley Ultra just as smooth. Overall I like the bike and it would be a strong contender if I was to sell the RSV although if Nina had found the seating position better .... hmmmm ... we might have... dang, I do like that scoot...
  13. The weekend before last I won a 1992 Yamaha Venture Royale from Ebay. It is an ex-police bike with around 85k on the speedo. Wasn't supposed to run , but it did start up (just not very well) with a fresh battery. Had really old smelly gas in it. The last motorcycle I had was a CB360 20+ years ago, and didn't do a lot of riding on it, it was a project as a kid also. This could probably be considered my 1st real motorcycle The carb diaphragms were dry rotted with more like nail-holes than pin-holes in them. I ordered a set, but in the mean time fixed what I have with some rubber spray. They're pretty stiff but allow me to run it. I took off the carbs and cleaned them real well. Also fixed cold-solder joints in the TCI and moved it on to the airbox. I'm sure I will need to sync the carbs. I don't have a manometer yet though. I changed the oil & coolant already. Maintenance Items I know I should probably address: I know I need to change the clutch & brake fluid out, and read somewhere about the drive-shaft grease. But I don't know what to use for this? I am seeing references to the "pumpkin" is that the rear drive unit that the back wheel is mounted on? What oil do I need for this? It seems a bit bouncy in the front and I think the forks have a bit of a leak so I'll order some seals for this. I have no clue what I am doing but I did see the info in the tech library on the forks. I am not overly paranoid, but I will admit my ignorance on this stuff.. I can turn a wrench on an auto, but a lot of the motorcycle nuances I have no idea on so I ask am I missing areas that I need to address to make sure this is a safe cycle?
  14. I need the 2 bars that slide inside the mounts and the hitch. I also need the 2 vertical brackets and U clamps that come up from the chrome tabs. Any one have these or know of a source for Markland parts? If I really have to I can fabricate all of these parts, but it would be a lot easier to just bolt the right stuff on.
  15. What a great weekend.. Got a little over 400 miles this weekend on my 2008.. I've got about 580 miles on the bike now in the first week and will be doing the 600 mile maint, and lots of other things... Here's my thoughts after spending all weekend riding out in the Shenandoah's.. First thing.. the ergonomics are a mess!.. who the designed this thing? I can understand a bike is meant to be modified to fit you, but man.. this thing needs a lot of work... As we all know the seat on these are tailbone KILLERS.. I can't believe they don't have a relief in the foam for your tailbone.. I'll be redoing my seat for sure VERY soon.. I'm still having a hard time sitting today.. Also, I can't believe how wide the seat is at the front. Must have been a bowlegged Japanese guy that designed the seat. The bars.. like everyone else.. they are too far forward.. You have to wonder what the hell the build of the guy was that said "Yep, this feels good.. ship it" He must had arms about a foot longer than me.. and I'm 6' I'll be doing the Flanders bar kit.. As far as handling and the ride... LOVE the ride.. nice and smooth.. as far as lots of curves.. show me more.. Handles really great in the mountains. My wife even said she likes it much better than the roadstar. Said it feels like it was meant to take curves with, and that was just sitting on the back. She said it felt more secure.. and I have to agree. It went where you pointed it.. not where it wanted to go.. The one thing I really don't like though is it needs another gear for the highway.. just way too many RPMs for me when cruising on the interstate... Even my roadie don't wrap out as hard as this bike... interesting... Have yet to really work on it , but I'm sure I'll be finding things I like, and things I don't... I just hope it's not as complicated as it looks.. Guess it could be worse and be a Goldwing and take half a day to get to anything on it... I've got very mixed emotions about this bike.. Some things I really like, especially the handling. (however, the low speed handling is a drag too, and I'll be adding the leveling links to see if that helps like others say) Other things I don't like, like the high RPM's on the interstate, and bad ergos from the factory. My wife is super happy on the back, buy I'm not camping real well on the front. Hopefully a lot of money and time will fix that. Just seems like after all the years of this bike being on the market virtually unchanged, they would address some of these issues. Seems I can't be the only one to make mention of these issues. I'm sure once I spend a lot of money, times, and make lots of changes and can call it my own I'll be happy.. but Come On Yamaha!... just like with my Roadstar, you just aren't hitting the mark as good as you could.
  16. I have the 89 VR apart for entire maint on the rear end. When I unbolt the 4 crown nuts on the rear gear case what am I to expect when I pull the driveshaft out of the swing arm? Like, will just the shaft come out or will the seal washer and circlip from the front come out as well ? A LOT OF HELP PLEASE !!!!
  17. My battery is getting close on 5 years old so I figure for what its worth I should replace it. I haven't checked the price of the one from Yamaha but its listed in the U.S. for $115 so that will be $200 in my part of the world. I work at a Honda dealership and our car batteries are Interstate and so are a lot of other Imports...they just label them for what ever make. So I'm just wondering if anyone has ever tried using a Interstate M/C Battery? Any Comments ? Thanks Keith
  18. I've read a lot on just about everything here. Have received a ton of info and appreciated it all. Made a lot of upgrade decisions and changes from all the info here. All has been great. Put on some Baron Risers over the past couple of weeks along with some other upgrades which I'll write about later. My question is, I have no problem with my cable lengths and the risers but, the risers hit the black plastic switch cover prior to the stops. Does anyone else have this issue and if so, what if anything have you done to correct it. Thanks
  19. I know you are very busy making the M/C covers BUUUUUT have you ever looked at the the side covers of a 1st gen , the round parts in the middle , they have 1200 or 1300 on them ? they would look a whole lot better being replaced with V4 . OR do I need a Just thinking out loud , I know i should not think Thom
  20. can anyone tell me the dimentions of the voyager trike kit? frame width at the wheel ? total length. and pictures of the atachment places.?? i am thinkin of buildin my own.. im sure that i can do it, for a lot less.. called my insurance man today and he said : not a problem, being thati only have liability coverage.. it is treated as an accessory.. he is also a biker..
  21. Brenda and I went for a small ride today and saw a brown MkII at a Subway on Hwy 418 in SC, did pull through the parking lot but didn't stop. If this was one of our members, my apologies. We were running late for a 'date', maybe next time??
  22. Hey guys. I'm curious as to wether or not this back rest will fit my bike. It's an 83 Venture. I know this ad says 86 to 93 but I know a lot of these parts are interchangable. Thanks guys. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAHA-VENTURE-ROYALE-CHROME-DRIVERS-BACK-REST_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45f156b184QQitemZ300401734020QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
  23. Who got dumped with lot of snow..Your alternate winter transportation
  24. I looked at the calender a few minutes ago and see that within a day or so, we will be halfway through winter. If I survive this thing, this will be a winter I will never forget. As bad as it has been here in east Tennessee, I know it has been a lot worse for a lot of you. It is right now 20º outside with 20/30 mph winds for a chill factor of 6º with snow blowing sideways and almost a whiteout. Just wonderful. RandyA
  25. Hi guys.. A buddy and I are taking 2 to 3 weeks off to hit the road and tour the lower part of the USA, prolly down the eastern seaboard, across to Texas and / or all points in between.. We may take in Rolling Thunder at the end of May in Washington DC, then across to see Sky Doc for a proper visit this time (and some ribs).. from there the road is open.. I keep catching glimpse of mentioning of "Maintenance Days" and such but can't seem to figure out the who what where when.. I'm interested in hooking up with the learned people and enthusiasts in order to learn how to do more of the advanced maintenance on my bike.. Can anyone point to the info as to what where and when some of these events are taking place, or people available to teach how to do some of the maintenance on our bikes.. ? We plan to put a lot of miles on the bike and see a lot of places.. so drop me a line.. Thanks in advance.
