  2. I bought my 83 in 4/83 and rode it until a couple of years ago. I gave it to my brother when I found a low mileage 89, but I still maintain it for him. As long as I can remember, if the battery was a little weak, you'd have a heck of a time starting it because the spark was weak when cranking. If the plugs were getting old that made it a lot worse. Mark doesn't ride it as much as I did, so he has this problem a lot worse than I did. The battery on my 89 is going bad and it doesn't have the same problem. The last time I rode it (before it snowed) it'd been sitting about 3 weeks and when I cranked it, it hardly went arouind BUT it fired right up. The spark seems to be a lot hotter on the 89. Do others with 83's notice the same problem?? How about other years?? We all thought the only difference between the 83 and the later TCI units was how the vacuum advance was connected. Maybe there was another difference. Frank
  3. Freebird

    Decent driver

This was sent to me by Dano by email. Looks like a lot of fun but this guy can certainly drive. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=4TshFWSsrn8&vq=medium
  4. I hope this isn't off topic. This story really touched me, and I know there are a lot of ex military people here, and a lot of classic car lovers. This story may be of interest to both. This guy is raffling off a 66 Mustang fastback, to help with his bills. The deadline to contribute/enter is tomorrow at noon. http://johnfourniquetcancer.eventbrite.com/
  5. He'll be 14 in February, so it is a good time to get him started on motorcycles. So, as of yesterday evening he owns his own 1993 Suzuki DR125E. It's been ridden hard, and needs a lot of work, but it runs good and we don't have to worry about breaking anything on it. Not too bad for $400. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/012-1.jpg
  6. Nothing profound, no great ground shaking words of wisdom. Just simply Thanksgiving Just over a year ago Lonna and I started this new adventure in our lives. Stayed with Gunboat for just about 6 months before I found work and we got into our new home. Looking back on this new adventure of ours, I see that there is a lot to be thankful for. Times were tough when we 1st got down here and I had doubts on if we were gonna stay. I'm glad that we did and with that said, I know we have a lot to be thankful for. So this Thanksgiving has a bit of a different meaning to it, as you folks here have helped us make Texas our Home....Thank you to all the members here, and the usual suspects that helped us loose our homeless status....and become Texans. May all our members have a blessed Thanksgiving Day
  7. I voted, and what a zoo. I got to the poles at 6:58 and was already #13 in line. I have been voting at the same location for the last 30 years and have never missed any vote. In the last 30 years I have never been higher than #5, the #5 was because I was a couple of minutes late one year. By the time I finished with my ballot there were about 30 people in line waiting to vote. I've never seen a line in 30 years. I pass 2 other polling places on the way in to work and they both had a lot of cars in the parking lot, One of the places the lot was full and cars parked both sides of the street for 2 blocks in each direction. If what I saw in the first half hour is any indication, the estimate of 50% turnout may be way low. There are some hot button issues here in WI. Get out there and vote. If you are in Chicago, Vote early and often......

    Got one!

I want to thank all of the posters here who gave so much good advise (not to mention their time) answering a lot of rookie questions. I found a 1999 RSV in immaculate condition. I picked it up on Friday evening, and rode it home the next day. I put just over 610 miles on it Saturday. The Avons are nearly new, it has had a 100 percent service and fluids change, the rear end and splines have been serviced, and it came with a bunch of extras like a 1300lb floor jack. My ride home showed only 1 fault - the original saddle. I had tried out a 2003 with a pillow-top, and my fat a** liked it a lot better. If any one knows of someone who has purchased a Corbin or Mustang, and has a pillow-top unit taking up space in the garage, let me know what you want for it. At the same time, I know of a perfect stock 1999 model RSV seat if anyone's looking!!!
  9. Well, after getting the bike back from the shop I decided to crack open the fairing to double check for anything loose and amiss.. and happy to report all is good.. buddy did a decent job (as far as I can see.. but they know I will be back in a huff should something be amiss).. I took the time to install a hidden antenna.. I had already tried the small box amplified powered antenna and yeah, it seemed to work OK.. but nothing to scream home about to be honest.. I wrangled the antenna cable to pop out wear I could reach in and switch cables when away from home and couldn't really tell any difference to be honest.. However, it DOES work and rather reasonably well for the price.. usually available online for 20 to 30 bucks.. But this time I installed a different one that a friend pointed me to, and I do have to report "wow" again. This one picks up MUCH better than the OEM antenna and better than the Firestik does. Wow, and it's unpowered.. glue it to the inside of the fairing and voila, plug and play.. I have to say I'm quite impressed with the signal it picks up.. I have to do some testing to see if the bulk of the bike blocks a lot of signal or not.. I seldom ever use the CB on this bike, and feel the antennas, be it the OEM or the Firestiks, impart some vibration to the bike in heavy winds (which we get a lot around here).. So once the rains stop I'll be able to take it on a run and see how it handles with the antennas off the bike.. The bike looks like it's missing something aesthetic without the antennas present.. But meh.. "tis better to feel than to look good".. Cheers
  10. This is going to be one great day for a ride. Sunny and 78 degrees and Ramona has the day off. For good reason to we been married 29 years today. A lot has changed since then.I'm not making $5.00 an hour no more but I'm still broke. We will be taking the 89 first gen country boy limo for a late Fall cruise probably through the mountains. Sad to say this may be are last ride together this year. Her work schedule is going to get real busy as the new store is opening and Winter is close. I'm ready to go I got 10 hours sleep last night, popped a few Ibprofen, and found my eye glasses. Like I said a lot has changed. Where can I buy lunch for:2cents::2cents:?
  11. Thanks a lot...........
  12. Very cool! A new Yamaha with a commercial which has a bunch of video shot right in my own backyard (so to speak). I'm not sure if it was all shot here in Utah, but a lot of it was. It looks like a great bike from what I have seen on the video. But, it definitely doesn't look like something a passenger would want to ride on much. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products/modelvideo/651/1//video.aspx
  13. My Dad has a lot of health problems, thanks to Agent Orange. He is finally on VA 100% disability for it. A while back, we sold his 2006 Road King, as it was too heavy for him to hold up. He has neuropathy in his legs, and he also has Parkinson's. After selling the RK, he bought Midnite's 1100 Vstar, because it was much lighter, and had a lower seat height. Although it was easier for him to ride, he still had problems with it, so he sold it also. We decided it would be safer on four wheels, and since he probably doesn't have too many good years left, it was time to just say "%&$@ it", and just go borrow the money, and buy himself a nice car. The car is a 1948(same year he was born) Ford Super Deluxe Coupe. It has had a LOT of work done in the restoration, and it sports a mildly built Chevy 350. It also has power steering, power brakes, front disc brakes, and cruise control. We are going to add air conditioning. He is a happy camper now.
  14. Got home in the middle of the night. Got in my Bed and slept real late!! Done had Brown Sugar fired up this morning and she sounds ready to go somewhere. Don't want to see a beach for a while. Longest real Vacation I've taken in a long long time. Just went with no real plans, saw a lot of sand & water. Next time I will head straight for the Gulf!!! Beaches on West side of Flordia a lot nicer. Only made it back up as far as ClearWater. On up the coast of the Gulf might be interesting??Next time.
  15. Greetings from Knoxville, TN. I hope this is a good place to post this for some info. I just got a real nice loaded 87 Venture Royal. Can do a lot fixens, but the linked brakes I never had before. Seems like there is no rear pedal. I have bled the rear cal and the left front cal and there seemed to be no air. However, the bleeder up by the handle bars has a lot of air. I kept the rear master cyl filled, thru the 14mm bolt hole in the side of the MC (i guess that is a fill hole), and bled a lot of air out of that upper bleeder and got a good hard pedal and wheel stop, but after a little other work elsewhere on the bike, I rechecked the rear pedal and there was not any pedal again. I have repeated the air bleed from that upper bleeder a couple times and more air comes out. I would think that if I got a good hard pedal then Im good-to-go but why doesnt it last? If I had a leak sucking air in, I would think I would also see a leak on the floor, specially under pressure when bleeding. Would love any ideas and direction. Dennis
  16. egads.. I had my rear shock replaced under warranty last summer and after this long run discovered the dang thing has crapped out.. Comparing it to a couple of other RSV, I stand on the right side of the bike and press down on the rear seat, mine will spring down and up smoothly while the other two have a heck of a lot more resistance to the downward push than mine does.. This is how the tech showed me my shock was dead when he suggested a warranty replacement (a quick test he says).. So though my shock holds air pressure, there is no resistance to it.. and I do not recall ever finding a puddle of oil under the bike nor can I notice any oil dirt on the bottom of the shock.. I ride a lot in the rain, so wonder if that washed a lot of it off? The bike handles the bumps well enough but I noticed lately that the bile wallows in bumpy long curving turns at high speeds.. I can anticipate it and not find it scary though someone not expecting this on their bike might well panic. Anyway, now that the bike is officially out of warranty as of last month (shyte timing huh?) I need to figure out what best to do.. I doubt I'll want to order another whimpy $900 Yamaha shock which will most likely go bunky in a year.. what choices do I have? I'm having my front forks serviced later this month and was contemplating on having a set of progressive springs installed. I have them in my VStar and love the stiffness and lack of nose dive when attack sharp corners or abrupt stopping. It has a nice spring rate.. Has anyone tried these on their RSV yet? Anyhoo... lemme know what you think.. Cheers
  17. A couple weeks ago we bought a lot at http://www.lake-mohawk.org/ We built a home there 15 or so years ago, lived there for 6 years and bought another home in town, then sold the one at Mohawk. We have long wanted to continue fishing w/o having to drive an hour or so to get to fertile waters so we decided to get a lot. Then of course we HAD to have a pontoon boat and that led to needing a trailer to put it in the lake and take it out in the fall. We managed to get that accomplished pretty quick. Then I decided that I HAD to have a trolling motor and I found a used MinnKota 12v 55lb thrust Terrova Of course that leads to a fish finder and I wasn't about to spend $2000. for a Hummingbird 998C so I settled for second best (IMHO) which is the Hummingbird Wide Portrait. Problem is they are pretty scarce but I'll find one somewhere. So if anyone out there has one or knows of one, I sure would like to talk about it with you.
  18. I want to get a first aid kit together sometime soon to keep packed somewhere in my 1st Gen. Who keeps one on their bike? what do you have in it? have you ever used it? I see a lot of alternatives on the web - a lot of kits already put together - don't know if that's more cost effective or not. I have no idea of what I would need in a kit - kind of mind boggling to see what's out there and what they include. Thanks, Doug
  19. I took Brown Sugar out for a while today and as I was going down river road a Hardley came up behind me. I was just taking it easy and loafing along in 5th gear. I heard the Hardley drop it a few gears and really crack it. Thats a lot of noise!!! Didn't intend to do anything about just let him go. He got up beside me looked over and grinned!! I swear I don't remember doing anything. I was running on cruise set at 50 mph!! Brown Sugar dropped to 3rd and the throttle rolled all the way back!! :whistling:When I got her under control and slowed down I stopped at a little store a few miles down the rode and a little later he pulled in. Rolled past me took a good look and on out the other side of the lot without speaking?? I think that bike has a mind of its own sometimes??
  20. Regarding my other post related to fuse block, I have an 89 Venture that needs the attention of a professional. A lot of things have been hacked up, and I have decided to see if there is a mechanic that would be interested in repairing my bike. These are the things I need done that I can tell so far. New tires front and rear Brakes front and rear Replace all fluids on bike Repair fuse panel and get turn signals working Grease splines on drive shaft Inspect and repair any other items to make bike safe and reliable Some maybe wondering why not just dump it and get another bike. The thought has crossed my mind, and it may come to that. But the plastics are in real good shape and the bike looks amazing. Linda and I both fit comfortable on this bike, and it just pops for the cool factor, you dont see a lot of these on the road. I would prefer someone that is in a 250 mile radius of Greenville/Spartanburg, SC (upper northwest corner of SC). I have about $1800-$2000 total to spend on this, but that is not concrete either. I want the person or shop that does this to do it right, and charge a fair hourly rate. Let me know what you all think, and I appreciate all responses. You can contact me at my email sc750virago@charter.net Thanks, Don
  21. My 83 VR serial number is 31N000 then 3 more digits just under 500 So is mine one of the first 500 ever made? That could explain a lot!
  22. I am trying to bring 83 Venture back to life. I have pretty much done most of the major stuff but I have not figured out how to get into the dash to replace 3 bulbs. Is it necessary to remove the dash or can the bulbs be replaced without removing the dash. It seem like a lot of trouble to remove the dash.
  23. I wanted to see if we can help Lowell out on his cycle repairs. As most know Lowell has done a lot for our family and being at most every event we had and being our ambassador for Venturerider.org Please lets show Lowell how much he means to us!!. I would like to help out by giving some money to help him get his cycle fixed. as of right now 300.00 is needed for the cycle repairs but extra is also needed for gas as well to get his bike there in TN for the repairs. Most of us know Lowell is having some health issues which we all know takes $$ to do so I was hoping by doing this for Lowell it would help him out toward his other $$ needs.. I know Lowell will be talking to me later on :whistling:but heck we Love the Guy Freebird, Can we do this for Lowell as he really means a lot me and others here? Buddy
  24. I have read a lot of the posts on this subject and have not seen a direct question or answer on this subject, so here goes. Most say that the 83 to 85 1st generation is the fastest of all the Ventures at 1200cc. So my question is this. What has to be changed to get the hp of the 83 to 85 models in a 2nd gen? I know the gearing is different, and a lot of people change to a v-max rear end. I'm talking about just hp and torque increases. I've heard about swapping to v-max cams, but would like to know what all would need to be changed, how much of an increase could be expected, and if it is worth the money involved to warrant it. I know that Pegscraper has done a lot with his early model Royal Star, and was wondering if any one with a 2nd gen had tried some of the same things. I would like to know what the differences are and how to get, at least close, to the 1st gen hp and performance and approximately how much it would cost with 100cc more to work with.
  25. to all of you who attended the 2010 Internatuional at Potato Creek, a big Thank You for coming and making this a success. To those of you who stepped up and helped out with planning, the dinner, helping me lead the different groups on rides, an even bigger Thank You! Sue and I have met a lot of Ventureriders over the past 4 years, we count many of them as great friends. We made more of those in the last few days. This rally may not have been one of the best organized or structured but there was some great comraderie there. We got to spend more time with people we'd only met briefly once or twice. The rides turned out good, the food was good and the ice cream was great, especially at Oink's. But the people were the greatest part of this. It was our honor and priviledge to host this event and to show you a little of our area of the country. Again, thanks to all, we had a great time. And YES, I'm glad it's done. As Snarley Bill told me, it's a big job and takes a lot out of you, but it is very rewarding. Looks like everyone is making it home safe. We'll see you all somewhere down the road.
