  1. I want to remind everyone of the dangers of using bungee cords. My supervisor at work had a bungee cord come loose as he was trying to secure something and it popped him in the center of his left eye. At this point he will have to have a new lense put in to get any use out of that eye. I have also almost have this happen and it could have gotten me, but I was lucky. Year before last, Laura were coming to the campground at Vogal and she wanted some firewood to have a campfire(it did not matter that it was 80º outsire). We stopped at a little store and I bought a bundle of firewood and realized I had not pasked my good bungee cords. I went back into the store and bought some of theirs and as I was stapping the bundle of firewood on the trunk grill, one uncurled on the hook and came loose, just barely missing my face. So, I know how quickly this can happen. If you are going to use bungee cords, and they can be real handy, just make sure that if it did come loose when you are pulling on it that you are not in the line of fire. These things can pack a lot of punch. RandyA
  2. We had a couple of nice days and I was able to get out for a ride. I had picked up some road crud and so I decided to clean the windshield. That is when I found it very loose. I popped the trim piece and found four very loose screws and one completely out. I could not believe they had grown so loose on 2,000 miles since install. When I installed the windshield, I had tightened the screws as much as possible after hearing the problems one of our members had with his windshield coming off at 60 mph. Just wanted to let anyone with a Clearview Windshield to know they may need to check the windshield. Be Safe
  3. Hey Folks, Well here we are at another New Year, I know many have made resolutions ( I hate that word) and will try to change a negative in their life. Darren (93 Venture) came up with what I think is an awsome idea to raise some money for St. Judes. His idea is for a weight loss for money to donate to St. Judes. I have thought over the holidays what might be the best way and this is what I and some others have brainstormed. We will get some volunteers to be a group that will attempt to loose the weight. They will come up with a weight that they think they can loose before Freebirds Maintenance Day on June 6th. Folks would then pledge so much per pound on the combined total weight that the members want to loose. There is a twist to this also as we want folks to be realistic in their attempt on loosing weight. If someone says they want to loose 40 lbs and they only loose 30 they have to pay lets say $1 per pound that they didn't loose. Keeps people somewhat honest and motivate to lose the weight they said they would. As mentioned if your going to participate in this, BE REALISTIC! dont say that you want to loose 60 lbs in 6 months. This will be a total of all the goals set by the individuals. There will be a second thread started once we have the volunteers where members can donate however much per pound. So what do you folks think....are you up for the challenge??

  7. I posted this earlier but it didn't seem to go through. So, I'll try again. I have the Yamaha headset for 3/4 helmets. They are 1 1/2 years old and I now have a loose connection in my helmet. It is where the cord from the bike attaches to the side of the helmet. I most times now have to jiggle the connection to get the mic and speakers to work. I haven't tried pulling it apart as I figure that will be a winter project. It is a really poor design as the cord and sticks out at the bottom of the helmet. (I really don't like Yamaha accessories) Has anyone had this problem and how did you fix it? I ride an 07 Midnight. Thanks, John
  8. how do these come off? they appear to just slip on and be held in place by the springs but I cant get them loose. Are they screwed on? or do I just need a bigger hammer?

  10. Does anyone have a spare center light/reflector for an 86 VR? Seems mine bailed out on me today, possibly while I was embarrassing a Road King that under estimated the get up and go of a 22 year old bike. I guess 85 in second may have shook it loose. Its the one that says Yamaha under the tag.
  11. My antenna is loose where it threads into the black piece with the chrome bezel piece. I can't get it to tighten or loosen because the whole thing turns, meaning the piece that threads onto the mount itself. Any ideas on how to get it off of there so I can get some loctite on it and thread it back on I don't mind it being loose but am afraid of losing it. Can I get an aftermarket antenna that just goes on the mounting bracket? Thanks, Ross
  12. I bought my 07 Midnight in April 07. Got the Yamaha head sets with it. A few weeks ago, I started having problems with mine. There is a loose connection in the junction where the cord mounts on the helmet. I went into my dealer and they checked with customer support and there is only 90 days warranty on it. I complained to the gm but that didn't do much. So I paid a lot of money and they won't stand behind it. I also got the Yamaha cover and it is starting to spread at the seams. The mp3 player that came with the bike is crap and I never use it. Also notice that some of the other accessories on the bike are cheap. I've decided that there will be no more Yamaha accessories go on the bike unless I can't get them elsewhere. Yamaha doesn't seem interested in keeping existing customers. At least here in Canada. I was at the Atlantic bike show in Moncton in Feb and was talking to a VP from Canadian head office and I was telling him about all the nuts and bolts that came loose or fell off shortly after I got it. His response: "So what do you want me to do about it?" His attitude was pretty much a "don't bother me" one. Sorry for all the venting. It seems service is a thing of the past.
  13. Some how the bracket that holds my lower left cowling on broke. It's the one that has the screw on the backside of the cowling toward the outer edge next to the crash bar. I tried JB Weld but it did not hold. Anyone have any suggestions. It was holding up OK but I guess the vibration broke it loose. I haven't laid the bike over or brushed up against anything to cause the JB Weld to break loose but it did. I guess the vibration caused it to come loose. Any body with any ideas???? :confused24: Moakster

    The Trailer

This is for us losers - you know, the ones that did NOT win THE TRAILER. Who is most disappointed? On a scale of 1 to 10, with disappointed to the point of wanting to kick the dog being a 10. 1 being, ho-hum, didn't want it anyhow. For me, it would be a 5. I wanted it, but won't loose any sleep over it.
  15. Did we accidently loose this feature, or did we turn it off?
  16. I tried to take the nut loose that holds the clutch boss ,so I could change the basket. I used the biscipts with the special fingers and a 30mm socket. I straighten out the washer then tried to loosen it , but it would not break loose.. Also tried an impact wrench with 120lbs pressure. Seems to be tighter than 50lbs. torque.. I hope this is a right hand thread, it looked like it was. Can anybody help? Also would anyone be interested in looking at it in Oberlin on maintance day?
  17. I have a set of Ultra Classic mufflers and I am going to drill the baffles using a 1 1/4 hole saw. After I drill thru the front or rear baffle plate does that completely disconnect them or will I have to twist and shake it to break it loose from a tack weld farther in the muffler? I have read all the posts I could find and I know the procedure except for this. AL
  18. It's my day for posting. Nothing else to do when it is snowing and raining... Has anyone had a problem with stuff falling off their bikes? I bought my bike (07 Midnight Venture) last April. At 4,000 Kms (2400 miles) I came back from an 8 hour cruise and was washing the bike when I noticed the chrome do-dad on the front fender was loose. Turns out one of the bolts had fallen out. After further checking, I found that one of the bolts had come out of the trunk support and another was almost out on the same side. That would have been interesting as my wife was with me all day. It was Sunday evening by now and I was taking off on a 4 hour ride to work in the morning. I spent the next hour tightening bolts. Found a lot that were loose. Got to another dealer on Monday and they replaced the missing bolts. Later on in the summer I opened my side bag and the cover almost fell off. Both bolts had come out. (I had missed these in the previous tightening). More time tightening bolts. I talked to a VP from Yamaha at the bike show here and he pretty much told me to go bother someone else. Not impressed. Anyone else have this problem? None of the riders here seem to have had this happen. Thanks, John
  19. I just bought this 83 VR as my first bike. Yeah I know, 'Wow, that is a big first bike'. But it was a pretty good deal and it runs great. Anyway... 1. What exactly is the difference between a first generation bike and a second generation bike? 2. How do I tell if the front fork seals are bad? I mean outside of obvious things like leaking, because they are not leaking. What is happneing is this: When riding the bike around town, just about every time I hit any kind of bump in the road the front end bangs really loud like something is loose in the front end, but nothing seems to be loose. So I am wondering if this is a symptom of bad front forks.
  20. Anyone here besides me? The reason I ask is because I have a ton of autographed hockey stuff that I think Im finally going to turn loose of. Rocket Richard, Gretzky, Roy, Sakic, Forsberg, Bobby Hull ect.....hit me up if interested.
  21. ....or is it just me
  22. For a 2nd Gen, the oval type. Only need the part that has the mirror in it. Either side will do. Anyone got one they don't need? Mine is loose.
  23. I've been working on the bike the last couple of days and everything going well. I was putting the gas tank back on this morning and noticed a loose hose that smells like gas. I cannot find where it goes. On the other side it looks like there is a similar hose going to the lowers where the air filters are are located. It feels loose also, I did not pull it out. Can I just slide the hose back into the space or does it connect to something? Thanks:confused24: Everette
  24. i found this photo of a wild looking v max engine. can anyone explain whether this is a standard engine, or has it been tricked out. looks kinda dangerous,if you wear loose fitting jeans!
  25. I had to pull my exhaust and collector to find an oil leak that I have been living with for the last 12/13 thousand miles. It started just before Vogel and my trip, and just after rebuilding the clutch and clutch slave cylinder. It turns out that it is leaking at the slave cylinder oil seal. That's on order. In the meantime, I took the collector to a friends because he has a parts washer. The oil was so cooked on that the cleaner barely touched it, so he said "Let's just put it in the bead blaster, then paint it" I said "You've got a bead blaster? COOL!!!" That was fun, but as I was moving it around I heard a rattle. I've read of this dreaded problem, but hadn't heard the rattle while it was on the bike. It was more than a loose piece that could be fixed by "punching" the bottom to press on the loose part. (Like I've read about in threads here) We decided to cut it open and get the loose piece out, it was a corner piece that had broken loose and was rolling all over the place. One thing lead to another and we ended up "cleaning it's clock"! We pulled out all the perforated metal and what appeared to be heat shield. Most of which was gone anyway. My main question is: Do I need to put some sort of heat shield back in the top of it? Does that extra heat on the bottom of the engine create any issues? Has anybody (I'm sure someone has!) done this to their's? Paul, my friend, wants to eliminate the collector all together and bend some pipe to replace it. I said that's already been done but it's a few hundred dollars! So we decided to leave that to others! Sorry, I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I'm gonna take my camera tomorrow and get some shots. I'll post them here then.
