  1. My battery warning light will not go out. The manual says to check the fluid level. The level is fine. Anyone else with another suggestion?
  2. I was looking in my 1983 Venture Owner's Manual and it stated to check the oil in the rear drive to use the level gauge from the tool kit and it should be between the marks on the gauage. I don't have this particular gauge so my question is: How far down into the reservoir from the fill hole should my oil level be? Thanks, Ronnie 83 Venture Std/03 Champion Sidecar
  3. My clutch lever is engaging about 1/4 inch off the grip and the lever has a lot of free play in it. Fluid level is OK and the fluid in the reservoir looks clean. (The level was a bit low and some fluid was added about a month ago.) Should I flush it out and rebleed the system to cure the problem? Also, is there a free play adjustment (on the slave cylinder or elsewhere that could have come loose)? I can't find anything in the service manual but maybe I missed it. Has anyone else had this problem?
  4. Judging from what I have seen so far many of the modifications we make to the bikes are possibly illegal on the federal level. In my area there are also the mods that are illegal on the local level, like no mufflers, that seem to be ignored by the police....so far. There was an interesting link to the Motorcycle Riders Foundation posted by Steve (Bummer) in another thread. Also the federal laws. Going by MRF many of the more common modifications such as Vmax rear end, plugging the AIS, muffler change or modification, jet changes, air filter/air box changes, rev limiter changes, cam etc. assuming not using something that has been certified for the bike, could be trouble. At this time I assume the only thing we could remotely see are violations for exhaust changes. They would be easier to tell then final drive gears changes or jet work. Is it likely? Not from what I see of the uncorked Harley's in Tucson. I still wouldn't be surprised if one day there is a crack down here but no sign yet. If someone with power gets fed up here it could even swing the other way and go 100% compliance. How about in other areas? Has anyone run into examples of enforcement? Anyone have a good guess as to what the future may bring? Jerry
  5. Last Friday, I got together with Rob and Charlie in Mississauga, and did my 2nd oil change, and synch'd my carbs. With the oil, we changed both oil and filter. I put in the Yamalube 20/50. The 3 of us checked the oil level, started the bike ran it, let the oil settle and left it at halfway on the sight glass. Very strange, I checked the level today with the bike level again, and now the oil is full on the sight glass. We put in 3.2 litres, as an estimate from the jug. Where the heck did the extra oil come from? We fully drained the crankcase, and removed filter. I don't see any oil dripping, but how could it be more full without adding any oil? Just one of those unexplained mysteries I guess.
  6. Lately I've noticed something peculiar and was wondering if others out there experience the same or am I just experiencing something coincidental. With this scoot and my '85, I've generally brought the oil level up to somewhere between half and the top mark on the sight glass. Due to other readings on this sight related to oil level and oil leakage/seeping, etc... I've been allowing the oil to go below the middle point...almost as low as the bottom mark. Cool... I don't get any oil leakage anywhere any more but I've also noticed that the whole engine seems to run a LOT quieter, smoother, and seems quicker. Anyone else notice this?
  7. I'm changing Fork Oil on my '93 and stumbled across something weird. In the Manual i downloaded from here, Yammi states to fill 409 ml of Oil in each Fork Leg. As i'm no Friend of this Way, i measured the Air Chamber after the proper Fill. This Amount of Fluid leads to a Air Chamber (or eventually Oil Level) of 245 mm without Springs and the Legs compressed. Imho, that's way too much Airchamber for a Travel of 140mm. I researched the same Shop Manual and in the Specs Summary Yammi states a Oil Level of 172 mm. As the Reference of 'Oil Level' isn't stated, i assume they take the Measurement between Top of Oil and Top of the inner Fork Tube which is the Air Chamber. I researched a Lot of Fork Oil Threads here and got inconsistent Results. A Member stated to buy 2 Quarts others didn't mention any Kind of Quantity. Basically and my first Question to those who have done that in past would be: How much Oil do i need to refill both Legs ? It could be either 409 ml per Leg and have a real big Air Chamber or something around 540 ml per Leg which would lead to an Air Chamber at 170 mm. All other Forks worked on in my Life have had around 10 Percent more Airchamber than the Fork Travel was. This Formula would lead to an Airchamber with 155 mm. Maybe this is the Answer to some bad Behaviour of the front End which some 1Gen Rider suffer from.
  8. After suffering from the "ice pick between the shoulders" feeling on long rides I installed the Barons risers. They helped somewhat but didn't fully solve the problem. I just finished installing the Flanders bars, ss brake lines and throttle cables from Buckeye Performance. I also installed Kuryakyn Iso grips and put in a Sirius Sportster 4 satellite radio while I had the fairing split. I havent had a chance to go on a ride yet so I'll keep yall posted as far as the comfort level is concerned. The install went well and though it was a good bit of work, anyone with a reasonable level of mechanical ability should be able to do it without a problem. I will say that Rick at Buckeye performance is a pleasure to do business with and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to do this upgrade.-Jack
  9. Have any of you that have a Zumo 550 noticed a drop in volume when listening to mp3 or XM thru the Zumo? When I am listening to FM or to my mp3 player I usually have my volume set at 17-18 but if I switch to the Zumo and listen to mp3s or XM I have to turn the volume up to 27-28 to get the same sound level. Is this normal:confused07:
  10. The manual suggests 20W40 or 10W30. I have seen the debate re: synthetic vs. dino and I think I will go with dino. Any suggestions on the weight ? Also, does anyone know if I can still get a filter from Yamaha ? Is this a stock item (because it is the same as more recent bikes use) or will I have to order the filter in advance ?? What about the final gear ? 80W90 hypoid gear oil is recommended in the manual. Looks like I need a special tool to dip down and measure the level. Don't have the tool. Where should the level be ? As usual, thanks guys.
  11. Hi. I've bought a non running XVZ1200, 83 model, and have started rebuilding it. I bought a new battery/plugs etc to try and fire it up but it turns over way to slowly. When I press the start button the battery level just drops right down? I've also noticed the starter solenoid gets red hot when the engine's turning overhttp://www.yamahaventureclub.co.uk/forum//smileys/smiley24.gif I burned my fingers on the terminalshttp://www.yamahaventureclub.co.uk/forum//smileys/smiley35.gif, that's how hot it gets.
  12. Ok...I'm fairly new to working on a bike and I am trying to learn all I can. In this learning experience I heard that the AIS can cause popping and backfiring, which I have. Initally I disregarded it as I planned on plugging it. But after a little further inspection I have noticed that it only occurs on the right side (at least when on the side stand). I found this out by reving the engine and letting off quickly, which in turn causes the backfire, and as soon as I let off, I glance at the pipes to see which one it is occuring with. With that said, would it still be the AIS (as I haven't plugged it yet) or could I have a leak somewhere on the right side. Bear in mind, I haven't put it on a jack to level it yet, I am just fishing for what to possibly look for. And for a little history on the bike, from my understanding it had sat for quite a while when it was trying to be sold and I am not to sure how ofter it was ran during that time. I know not enough for the battery because it was bad. But it does have a fresh tank of gas...
  13. I have some shims for my 78 XS-750 and believe they are 29mm across and was wondering what the diameter is for the Venture. There are, of course, some large similarities between the two bikes... and the 750 even came with the plastic "dipstick" for checking the pumpkin oil level. I always thought it was cute... because after several years I found the oil level was fine, if it WAS low, was due to my using the dipstick! Routine oil change was always clean and clear. These are some tough bikes. And yeah, it had the same "soft thrust washer" that could cause 2nd gear problems like the early 1st Gen bikes.
  14. This is really cool. A 360 deg view at street level: http://maps.google.com/help/maps/streetview/index.html#utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-google-svn&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=google%20maps%20street%20view www.Mic-Mutes.com Bill Morphy
  15. I recently bought the Barons lowering kit and planned on lowering the bike. Since i had to do other things also I started with the front. thanks to the directions in the tech library I was able to lower the front fairly quickly. Now the question. With the front lowered one inch the bike now sits perfectly level. If I install the baron's kit won't that put the back end 1.5 inches lower and throw off the way it sits again? Has anyone lowered just the front? I was lowering it for looks only but now that it sits level I'm thinking that I just cured the slow speed instability problem and I'm not sure if I want to upset it again. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
  16. ......how to check the engine oil level, in my '83 VR. I had heard, somewhere, that there was a little window where the level of the engine oil could be viewed. I have looked all over the sides of my bike, but could find nothing of the sort. I have also been moving back & forth through the downloaded service manual but, alas, there was nothing to be found. Even a search through the PDF reader failed to pull anything up (though I am sure that it must be in there, somewhere). I really need to know how to check the engine oil level, and would appreciate someone outlaying the blueprint for me - OR, directing me to the page where I could find what I am looking for, in the service manual. Advanced thanks.
  17. Ok, so I ordered the level links from Diamond R and just got them. Now the 2 stupid questions. They cam with new bolts - should I use those or the existing bolts that hold the factory links from Yamaha? And what type of grease should I use to lube? White Lithium or axle / bearing grease? Thanks in advance..
  18. Ok guys my 83 is running great just turned 73,000 mi,Coming home from a meet & eat.My oil light came on while going down hwy.pulled over and checked level which is good - full of oil mobil one 15w50.I started back down the road no light untill about 10 mi it came back on,stop and checked? everything seems ok,light stayed on all the way home 15 more miles or so.Watched temp gauge too ,did great cool running in 90F heat.So am I missing something or just replace level sensor for oil and go on.Engine has no knocks or weird sounds like a second gen.I had to put that in . You know someone will make a crack at the 83 Venture. buddy
  19. My engine oil level light has been coming on quite regularly until today, now it stays on. Oil is full as seen throught sight glass with bike on center stand on level ground. I did an oil change 2 days ago and the light seemed to stay out for about an hour then came on again. It never did last season. Any answers to why or suggestions to fix this problem. The warning light gets distracting and annoying. Thanks
  20. I need to ask this only because I'm on the road and don't have my owner's manual or shop manual with me. When checking the antifreeze level in the tank behind the right side cover, is the bike supposed to be level and balanced or leaning over on the side stand? It makes a huge difference in what the level reads. The bike in question is a '96 Royal Star, if that makes any difference. TIA.
