  1. SilvrT

    Fixation

It's no wonder the person turning left didn't see the motorcycle until it was too late... they were "fixated" on something. Here's a little example of how fixating can cause this to happen.... http://www.msf-usa.org/motion.html
  2. I borrowed a FLIR i7 Infrared camera and did some scans of the bike. Interesting, as I found that my left rear cylinder is not firing. These pics were taken in this sequence, Cold, 1 minute, 5 minutes in this order. FR, RR, LF, LR. Each pic is time stamped, the date is wrong. The left rear is dead. Readings at the spark plug also confirm this. Also notice the lower temp at the exhaust pipe on the left. pic 247, 249, 267, 276 are all of the left rear. Now to figure out WHY this cylinder is not firing. I'll post all the pics and maybe it will help someone who knows how to read an IR pic.
  3. I need a left side saddle bag lid, if any body has one to sell please contact me through PM
  4. Yesterday as I left work, I looked to the east where home is & saw very dark clouds. I thought, "Guess I'll be in quite the downpour by the time I get home." I also noticed it was quite cold. (My Gerbing's heated gloves are a joy.) So, as I reach the plateau (where I live), it's hailing. No big deal. Well, about a half-mile ahead it decides to dump with an accumulation of about a half-inch. Whoa! Tires a-slippin' & a slidin'. I'm down to a crawl between 5-10 mph, as are all the cagers. OK, I'm thinking I should just pull into the high school parking lot & park, call my wife at home & tell her she needs to pick me up there. Can't. No one will let me get into the right lane to turn into the lot. OK, maybe I can make it down the hill without an incident & go kind of the long way around to get home. Yeah, it's a flatter route once I get down that hill. I'm trying to stay in the tire tracks of the cagers while I'm thinking that everyone must think, "What is that guy doing? He must be an idiot riding a motorcycle in this kind of weather." All is well, so far. Now I'm at the light ready to turn left with the green arrow & this turn is about a 120 degree turn, with hail covering the ground, with wide wet painted lines for the crosswalk that I can hardly even see. "OK. I can do this. I hope." Going about 2-3 mph through this turn. Ah, made it. I'm puttin' along in 2nd gear (usually do this road in 4th). Half a mile later I must go through a round-about & make my exit at the 3rd right (270 degrees, 3/4 of the way around). Again, I'm only going walking speed through this round-about. OK, almost home. Only a 1/4 mile to go. I've got to start going uphill & then turn left into my driveway. Oh man, not looking forward to this. Driveway totally covered in hail. Successfully turn into driveway, tap my brakes twice to open the garage door, paddle through a 3 point turn so I can back into the garage. Yippee! Home safe. Sheesh! Talk about pucker power. Still icy this morning. Took the 4wd truck to work.
  5. Tied at 35 each with 11 minutes left. Go Air Force.
  6. Will the 83/1200 lower cowl fit my 86/1300? or does anyone have a good lower left cowl for my 86? Thanks, Ray Here is a picture of what I am looking for. This happens to be the right side but I'm looking for the left. http://www.raymondstacy.com/lower.jpg
  7. ok. i cannot find the torque specs for the left case cover. i replaced the stator (thanks earl) and im ready to reassemble. im missing the page 3-52 in manual. i think its there. any help please?????
  8. http://scaleofuniverse.com/ Slide the slider left or right ... very cool !
  9. My 96 Royal has passing lamps. Looking at the owner's manual, there is supposed to be a switch located somewhere in or around the left handlebar control. I assume it is supposed to be a momentary switch that only turns the lights on when the switch is pushed and held? Is this switch part of the control housing, or is it mounted externally? Whoever mounted the lights on the bike added a toggle switch to the left light housing. I can't even reach the switch unless I stand in front of the bike. Can anyone post pictures of the proper switch for me? Anyone know of a source for it?
  10. sorry new member and dont know where to look for parts for my 89 venture . in need of left side fairing parts blue preferable could paint if needed thanks
  11. I'm embarrassed to say this but I tried to remove the left side crankcase to install my new clutch spring. I got the clutch installed on the right side but only after I screwed up the gasket and the starter clutch wiring on the left side crankcase. How hard is it to remove the left side crankcase and replace the stator coil wire since I think I damaged it while trying to remove the cover? Also it feels like the (left) crankcase cover has something keeping it from coming right off ( springs back when pulled on). Is there something I need to know about when removing that cover?
  12. After seeing several variations on mounting some accessories on a 1st gen, I thought I would share what I have done. In mounting the GPS, I wanted it to be easily visible, stable and not in the way of other things. By mounting a piece of Plexiglas on the left side handlebar riser, it is off center enough to not be in the way of reaching for the ignition switch and it is stable. It is also easy to take off when parked. Years ago, the vent on the left side broke and I installed a radar detector in the hole. It works very good shooting through fairing and is out of the way and not noticeable. This helps when I make a corner and drive into a Virginia State Police roadblock as detectors are illegal there. I also have a switch on the panel near the radio where I can quickly turn it off. I have also mounted an inside/outside thermometer above the detector and have the temp pickup mounted under the mirror. This gets it out in the wind and also shades it from the sun. I put a sun shield over the thermometer and that helps. With this bike being a standard, I made an aluminum cover that mounts the radio at a 30 degree angle to help keep the CD player from skipping when I hit a bump and it also makes it very easy to change CD's while riding. I also put a row of switches in the panel cover for added lights and the detector. This may be a bit different from some of the others I have seen, but it works for me. RandyA
  13. Last Sunday and today we were in the mid 60's and I put about 140 miles on the bike. It was a mix of roads with some four lane, marked two lane, to unmarked two lane. I even rode some after dark. It is hard to describe what is like, as it is really different. It is like sitting on the bike in front of a big screen with a movie playing that was taken from a motorcycle going down the road. What you loose is the normal three dimensional effect that is so helpful with depth perception and judging speed, especially something coming toward you. The biggest part is just trying to be aware of everything going on around me. My problem is on my right side, so I am constantly scanning for anything that may come into my lane, whether it is a car pulling out, to a car that is beside me that begins to come over, to something like a dog running out. I stopped by Walmart to see if I could find a good convex mirror to mount on the ride side to help in this big blind spot that I have, but did not see anything I liked. I may check at a truck stop and see what is available. At the present time I am not sure of the vision I will end up with in my right eye. Presently, from the center to the left, I have absolutely no vision at all. From the center to the right, I can see some images, mostly a silhouette from light behind the object, but everything is very distorted. To look slightly to the left and see my TV, instead of it being a rectangle, it is kind of "S" shaped from left to right and is close to half the size with what I see with my left eye. At this time my eye is full of oil and at sometime will be drained and I guess we will start the bubble thing like before. I really hope that it will help the vision as I would love to get some peripheral vision back, even if the left half is blind. I don't expect for the left part of that eye to get better as that is where the blood vessels have died according to my doctor. I did get an eye patch at Walmart and with the right eye covered, it was a little easier to see out of the left eye without the distortion. I know this has been difficult for me, but I have REALLY felt thankful for the vision I have in my left eye this Thanksgiving Day. I want to also thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers. This VentureRider family is the best. RandyA
  14. November 17 and still ridding!! Gota just love it. Any suggestions for a good set of snow tires for the old girl!!! Rode today and loved it!! 0C at 8am on my way to work. Roads were dry and standing water was still liquid. 4C when I left for home. Going to safely push it as much as I can. My goal is drive it at least once a month. With the weather we been having it may be possable.
  15. Hello. I still am trying to get a loan on a RSV so yes...I still dont have one. I need to know what the distance is between the idiot light panels next to the cassette door. I am thinking of modifying the cassette hole and need a measurement from the right edge of the left window to the left edge of the right window. i am thinking of installing a FUSION MS-RA200 marine radio in the cassette hole and eliminating all the Clarion electronics. Please let me know if you can. Thank you.
  16. I appreciated the "no rear brake, but do have left front brake" thread but couldn't find one that dealt with no front left brake. I replaced the pistons on the front right brake caliper as it was leaking and decided to check out the front left to see if they were wet and have found they don't move. I disconnected the hose from the front left caliper and no fluid came out even when I pumped the front brake lever. Any suggestions in what I should do next would be appreciated. I have a 1987 Venture.
  17. I've a 2008 RSV that I've owned since brand new. This weekend, I decided to clean the carbs per some great instructions on this site. The diaphrams on the right side of the carb banks looked fine. However, both of the left side diaphrams looked DEFORMED... While the left diaphrams dont have any holes in them, the center hole looks deformed (larger...maybe swollen), and doesnt fit the slide as well as the right-side diaphrams do. The left side air box-to-airfilter hose was completely disconnected as well (back to my theory on 16-year old "technicians")... I'm going to order two new diaphrams for the left side.... QUESTION: What would be some of the issues I would have if the diaphrams were bad? Lower MPG...less vacuum...no power in 5th gear... I defer the to the wealth of knowledge on this site! Thanks!
  18. Leaving Milwauke today and at a large intersection I had a fall. The intersection had two left turning lanes, three straight through lanes and a right turn lane. As I approached the intersection turning left with an advanced turn the light turned yellow. I was not going fast as I was not familiar with the road and I slowed right down as the light changed. I looked back to see if Rhonda was would be okay and she stopped thank goodness. As I looked forward a car jumped the green and was right there so I hit the brakes and went down on the left side, and fell off the bike. The bike rolled/flipped to the right side and stopped. The guy who jumped the green before I could get all the way through the intersection and appearantly swerved away from me but never stopped. An older gentleman who turned right behind chased the car for a mile and then told the kid he caused an accident and he just drove away. The older fellow got his license and gave it to me. Three other people stopped to help and said they saw it and gave me there numbers. The police said nothing they can do as there was no accident as he went through a green but also stated he should have waited till I cleared the intersection. I have bruise on my knee and one on my elbow, no real road rash but a small tear in good blue jeans. The four crash bars did there job scraped but the front two bent backwards and broke the tabs in the centre of both lower fairings. That is all the damage that I can see People and the police were very nice and helpful. Two different officers showed up as they were not sure whos jurisdiction it was. The one officer was very concerned and very considerate to Rhonda feelings as she was obviously very shaken watching the whole thing. Obviously we were both very lucky as it could have been much worse, so all is good. Brad
  19. This may be obvious to all, but be very careful riding throug a puddle if the water is murky enough that you can't see the bottom! Last weekend we were riding back from the Fl. Keys with 2 other bikes through a monsoon-like rainstorm. We pulled into a gas station in, I think it was Long Key, for a fuel stop and I heard an engine behind me rev up really high...my wife yelled out from behind me "Karen just went down, go see if she's okay!". I carefully parked our 06 Midnight Venture and turned around to see Karen, her husband and a bystander lifting Karen's RSTD up off it's left side. Turns out Karen had ridden into a large puddle filled with water so murky she couldn't see how deep it was. Unbeknownst to her the puddle was over a foot deep and had a VERTICAL 12 inch dropoff. As soon as her front wheel went over the edge there wasn't anything she could do-of course her feet wouldn't reach the ground at that point- so she went over. Fortunately she wasn't badly hurt. Her right wrist was banged up, but after putting a brace on it she was able to complete the remaining 375 miles or so back home. And the engine and saddlebag guards must have done their job because the bike wasn't scratched. But obviously it could have been much worse. Like I said, it seems obvious, and we've probably all done it and never had a problem. But if you can't see the bottom of a muddy puddle...go around if at all possible! Oh and the gas station mgmt was totally unsympathetic. Couldn't even be bothered to go look at the puddle, much less put a cone in front of it. We watched several cars plunge both front wheels into the abyss before we left. Definitely a serious accident waiting to happen! Ride Safe! 1/2crazedbikr
  20. 4 lane divided hwy traveling west I'm in right lane cage in left lane behind me another cage pulls out from side street turning west. Traveling 70mph grabbed both brakes an signaled left but cage behind closing to fast and not enough room that I felt I could safely stop. So I grabbed some throttle and used what little room there was about 2' on the shoulder and passed on the right. I know that's not a good thing to do but my gut told me it was my only option. I had just read Dons post last night and another one the other day on panic stops and praticing them at 80mph. Anything else I could have done besides rearending the cage. Any constructive comments you won't offend me.
  21. I am from BC Canada,my brother and I want to ship our bikes to Orlando Florida and ride home, can anyone help me with where I could ship to that would be close to the Orlando airport, and be left for about a week?Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  22. Charlene and I will both be going under the knife in the next few weeks. I will be having carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and Charlene will be having it on both hands a couple of weeks apart. I had my right hand done in 2005, and now the left is really giving me fits when I try to use it for anything. I will be out of work for 6-8 weeks, but at the perfect time, the holidays...........
  23. I'm driving in the center lane of three, I look in my left mirror and see a car what seemed to be plenty of room behind me to change lanes. I believe I turned my signal on and started moving to the left when I hear a clicking sound coming from the left side of my bike. Now as I look to the left I see the car that was in my rear view mirror right beside me with my newly installed highway peg doing the chariot thing on her front wheel. Thank the LORD that HE gave me the ability to remain calm and move slowly to the right away from the car that I was sharing the lane with. She slowed down, I moved ahead of her and we made a left hand turn off the road to talk. She the driver of the car asked if I was OK (I don't know yet how I was not shaken) I said yes as I looked at my peg and realized it was somewhat OK. We then looked at her car with a few scratches in the clear coat of her wheel and missing center cap. She's saying lets just exchange info and is gesturing that I pay for her loss. So, I reply lets call the police so the blame can be appropriately charged. She replied "Are we really going to do this" and I said do what? She said she had a good relationship with her dealer and she would be reasonable and did we really want to involve the law and spend a few hours doing it. I said OK and it probably was a wise decision once I was away from the scene but, I still am wondering why she was so adamant about no police. As I reflect I was at fault because I was the one changing lanes, I almost always look over my shoulder along with looking in the mirror and this is the reason why. Again thank GOD it could have been worse.
  24. So ...exactly one month ago I had a bit of a fall on my road bicycle. To make it short, I broke my left hip. Fortunately the break was far enough from the joint that no replacement was necessary. I did however, end up with a titanium shank and 2 bolts, one on the bottom stabilising to the femur and one at top into the joint stabilizing across the break. I was on my feet with a walker the next morning and have since graduated to two ski poles. I figure end of this week I'll be on the home bike-trainer and in another 3 weeks or so I ought to be able to ride. But an uncomfortable thought keeps creeping in; Will I be able to hold up the RSV with that left leg and how long that's likely to take. So on the chance that some of you may have had a similar experience , I thought I would ask - what should I expect?
  25. Well, my Sons finally left the country today. They just left out of Bangor, Maine, headed to Ireland, refuel, then on to Kuwait. Everyone, please wish them well. We'll see them late next year.
