  1. I installed a set of polk 401s and Alpine ktp-445u amp and it sounds alot better. I know some people installed these components and didn't have very good results.I noticed if you follow the shop manuals wiring diagram its wrong . It has the left front speaker polarities reversed which of course would cause poor sound. Just thought some people would be interested .
  2. I was looking for a replacement left side fairing mirror for an 85 venture. 50 or 60 bucks on ebay sounds like a lot of $$$. I see some of the goldwing aftermarket mirrors on bikebandit ($10) look awfully close. Has anyone ever tried mating one to the Venture?
  3. Nina & I were out for an enjoyable afternoon ride yesterday and decided to head up the mountain to where one of the local ski hills is. Very nice ride, warm and sunny and not a lot of traffic. It's 2-lane up, 1 coming down. The left lane going up is designed for passing slower vehicles and there's signs along the way that say "Keep right except to pass". So, up ahead of us is a "slower" moving car in the right lane. In the left lane is a van (plumber's van) going about the same speed as the car but appx 2 car lengths back.... I got up behind the van and follow for a bit, waiting to see if he's actually going faster and passing or if not, is he going to move over so I can pass .... NOPE... neither! I get into his side-view mirrors and flick my high beams. Still he doesn't move over so I blast the horn ... still doesn't move over. Now, I don't like passing people on the right coz sometimes they suddenly decide to move over and not realize you're there... but I did anyway and as I got passed him and moved over to the left lane to pass the car, I raised my left arm and made a finger motion over my head pointing to the right (used the index finger) and off we went up the road. Got to the parking lot and got off the bike and next thing I know, this guy in the van pulls up and says "did you finger me?" in what I felt was an aggressive and threatening tone. So I said NO and explained the motion I made and why I made it. He repeated "you fingered me" and I repeated NO, it was a motion to move over. Well anyway, to make the long story short, I thought for a few minutes there I would have a scrap to deal with; however, he backed off, backed up and left but it was obvious as he was backing up, turning around and driving off he was cussing me out. From my perspective, the guy was itching for a fight over nothing IMO. Not sure how I would have handled it had he gotten out of his van, me being 65 and him appx 35 but me at 165lbs, wiry and quick to get my dander up .... Nina later reminded me that I shouldn't go getting into such things as I'm not 35 anymore (which I guess I still think I am LOL) Anyhoo... nothing more came of it and I'm not really sure why I'm posting this other than to just VENT a bit LOL
  4. Never, ever, ever forget to put your kickstand down, especially when you're parking your 800lb Venture next to your other motorcycle! I got lucky there, at least. I heard plastic cracking and freaked out that both bikes were screwed. The fairing hit the lower fork of the Vulcan and just put some paint on it. Didn't even knock it over. Cracked the fairing pretty good, popped the radio console out, tore loose the screws on left side and f-ed up the left airvent in the fairing. So the glue is drying now, and the bike will look just a little more worse for wear when I get it back together. Anybody have a spare 2-tone brown 85 fairing they want to sell? What a freaking brain cramp. At least I wasn't moving when it struck.
  5. The story: Left the Ipod on the bike last week. Yesterday the battery was dead. I put a slow charge for 6 hours on the battery and all seems well today. The problem: How do I reset the Audio Controller (left handlebar) so that it will allow me to play my Ipod using the Aux jack on the cassette player? I know the answer is probably very simple but the last time I did this was a few years ago and my memory fails me....and the Service Manual is NO help at all !! Regards and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this! Boomer....the not-so high tech guy.
  6. Carbon1..Larry...went down today. we were riding a fall color ride with some other members and some hunt-club guys. a 16 y/o boy, on a learners permit, crashed into him. the boy said he didnt see him. he was with his mom. Larry was taken to the hospital. he was concious as he left the scene. trike looks totaled, he must have flipped at least 4-5 times. lets keep him in our prayers.
  7. I'm sure I should have known this but..... I was installing my new ClearView screen which requires removing (at least partially) the front fairing piece. I've had that off once before but this time I notice that there is a knob on the left side way down near the bottom of the fairing for adjusting the headlight. Don't know why I never saw it before.
  8. I sell some of the wrenches a have made on Ebay, and some are international shipments. Ebay ID is Dingy101. I had a Neutral feedback left by a buyer in Great Britian, comment left was "Not all postage paid customs charge". I shipped package at Post Office counter, so I am somewhat sure it had correct postage, it was same as evry Int. shipment except Canada, which is a little cheaper. That then leaves customs fees, I have no way of knowing what a foreign country is going to charge, never paid this. The buyer that left feedback has 261 - 100% feedback, so he is somewhat experienced. Anyone experienced buyers complaint about international shipment custom fees. Buyer irritated me, if you haven't noticed. Just sent him a tersely worded thank you note. Gary
  9. I am currently using 10W40 syn amsoil in my RSTD and would like to know what oil can I use instead of the amsoil. Its getting higher in cost and harder to find it around. So what can I use in place of it and that it wont hurt what will be left in my bike after I switch? Please don't start an oil dispute just need some idea's. :rotf: Joe
  10. I was riding through town when a blond in a big black SUV pulled out of a side road. She turned left and I thought she would pull in behind me. Instead she came across the road directly at me, she was still looking left. She would have hit me if I hadn't leaned on the horn. Instead of stopping or going behind me she drove all the way down the block beside me on the wrong side of the road. New one on me.
  11. Cougar

    Goo Gone

I just put on my second clearview that I found for a awesome price last week. it had been stored for about 2 years in the original box. My Question is will Goo Gone hurt the windshield? I mounted it and started to peel off the plastic covering they put on. but from sitting so long. I have a small area about the size of a grape fruit were it left some sticky stuff. Thanks for Ideas. Just wanted to check before I tried it. Otherwise the shield is in perfect shape. Jeff
  12. I was bleeding my brakes per the Service Manual - right front, left front, rear, and the one on top. I installed SpeedBleeders on the left front and the rear as I went along. Everything worked as per normal -- fluid came out exactly as expected. No problems until I tried to bleed the one on top. Nothing came out - no air, no fluid, --nothing. I went around to the left front and nothing came out from there (even though it did a few minutes before). Likewise for the rear caliper bleed valve (which worked before). Hey, at least the right front works perfectly. Everything is like it came from the factory -- I never delinked the brakes or did any brake upgrades on this VR. The brakes were working fine before all of this. I just wanted to do some flushing for maintenance reasons. My guess is that there is something going on with the rear master cylinder. I searched the forum but nothing turned up that is exactly like this problem. I am open to suggestions before I begin surgery on the patient ....
  13. Greetings, Previously I had posted some problems I was having with battery on a trip I had just went on.Tracked problem to r/r. I have searched but have not found any articles how to replace this unit. What I have read I believe it is fairly simple to change and it is on the left side of engine. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on how to do this. By the way the bike is a 2000 RSV. Thanks.
  14. I made one of these and it works perfectly. I used old motor oil for the liquid. Sync #1 to #2, then plug those and sync #3 to #4. Then hook up tool to #2 and #4 to sync left side to right side (make sure to plug ports on #1 and #3).
  15. I stumbled across a couple of vacum gauges I had in the drawer. If I was to use these to sync up the carbs do I do the left 2 carbs together, then the right 2 and then connect the gauges to say the front left and front right and match them up. That is what I get from the sync article I read here, if I break it down right.
  16. How do I get the left fork tube off my 2007 RSTD? I took the 2 pinch bolts out of the top, and removed 2 allen bolts at the middle that looked like they were holding the middle cover on, but no budging. Is there something else? Seems like there should be more to it than that, but the aluminum covers/protectors don't allow me to see anything else. Thanks
  17. This is a big Thank You to Miles (The Million Mile Rider) for coming up and putting my 89 VR back together and running this morning. Having only use of one hand it would be well into next year before I would have my other hand in useable condition. As soon as my left hand gets about 80% flexibility, I will be getting more surgury to fix some more bone relayed issues. Then back to therapy again. Miles reasembles the left handle bar switch. Swaped out the battery from my wrecked 91 VR to my 89 VR. Cleaned out the carbs and got all 4 cylinders firing. Reassembled my front headlights. He taught me a few tricks on M/C maintenance. Thank you again Miles.
  18. so i was going to the store left the stop light poped the hill and the bike started to die i had two lines still left on the gauge ok i thought that the gauge was wrong so i shake the bike with the fuel cap off couldnt hear anything so i call my son to bring me some gas still no luck it fired over and i checked the pipes 3 hot 1 cold then it died again again so my quistion is is it the fuel pump? if so i still have 1 1/2 months on my warranty and is there any other thing besides the fuel filter that i should be looking at? Thanks:sick:
  19. OK, first round trip SEA to LAX went great on the new bike. Love this bike !!! Comfortable !! except for the Seat. ( darn ) Guess I will be spending a few bucks on a " Day Long Saddle " in the near future. Plenty of power, and the brakes seem to be better then on the 89. Not sure why?? If anybody wants a new RSTD, there are a few 08's and 09's left in dealer stock, around the country. But you will have to do some searching !! I found 2 in Washington, and one in Oregon. ( 2 months ago ) ( Only one left in WA. now ) Been working on the 89 getting it ready to sell. Posted it today in VR Classified. Will wait a few days before advertiseing it locally if anybody here is interested. Its ready to travel, fly to SEA, bring money, will pick u up at airport, and have you on the road in a Jiffy !! ( as they say )
  20. I just checked my rear tire and have 3/32's left in the very center groove. Don't think I would want to take a long trip on it but it should last awhile longer. Approx. 12,000 miles on it now with no cracking. How much do you think is left in the life of the tire.
  21. I've always considered myself a pretty good mechanic. I'm a commercial / industrial HVAC tech, and I'm one of the better one's you'll come across. This isn't just my ego talking, it's confirmed by the respect I get in the National company I work for, as well as my piers in my Union Hall, as well as those in my local area who know me. I think I can figure out anything, fabricate anything, and repair anything. Every once in a while I need to be put in my place. This old Venture is trying real hard to do just that. (87 Standard) I've been following this site for about 4 years now, and am doing many of the things that I've read that others do to their bikes, and am finding out just how difficult many of these repairs are. Kudos to all of you, and thanks for all the great advice / info I've gotten over the years, and you have my utmost respect for making them sound so easy. I don't get a chance to ride nearly as much as I'd like to, since with my trade, I'm usually working long hours / 6 days during much of the prime riding season, and this year has certainly been no exception. I'll be going on a road trip with friends at the end of August, typically putting 1,000 miles + over the 3 day trip. I know that doesn't sound like much to most of you, but for me it's a bit of an event. In any case, I'm having an issue that caused me to break the bike down somewhat and I figured it'd be a good time to play catch up on some of the things I should have done in the past. What I've done over the past two weeks, in the evenings after work, when I've been able to get home before 9:00, is to replace the carb diaphragms, all of which had small holes. That was the only easy task. I also replaced the spark plug wires, which wasn't too bad, but the right front one was a PITA. I also changed the final drive fluid, but didn't grease the ?spline?....how important is this? The issue that started all this was the exhaust issue where I was getting quite a bit of exhaust flow and noise, some backfiring out of the drain hole on the left side muffler. I thought I had a miss, but after changing the diaphragms and wires, I pulled the exhaust all apart and examined what I could see of the inside of the mufflers and the collector. I saw nothing out of the ordinary. I didn't actually pull the collector off, but pulled the front pipes off and the mufflers off and saw no cracks, nothing loose, no evidence of exterior leaks. I put the front pipes back on and started it with the mufflers off and it seemed to run well. No backfires from either side, and it ran relatively smoothly. Put the mufflers back on and the sound's still there. I'm convinced that the left side muffler has something blown out inside of it. I don't know how the inside of the muffler is configured, and don't understand how it could develop such a problem all of a sudden, but I can think of no other explanation. So that brings my first question.....are there aftermarket mufflers available that will fit this bike, or does anyone know where I can find a good used replacement. Second question is with the clutch slave cylinder. It's been leaking for a couple of years now, causing me to refill the reservoir once or twice a season. I want to rebuild it, but it seems to be tucked in behind the ? output ? casing, making access difficult. If I pull the two bolts that hold it, how difficult will it be to remove and rebuild? If I can get the muffler situation resolved, and the slave cylinder rebuilt, all I should have left to do is to change out the brake fluid (never been done and looks nasty in the window) ...and I'll feel comfortable that I've done my due diligence to keep this old beauty maintained. Any advice with these issues from those of you "in the know" will be much appreciated. I know this was long winded, thanks for staying with me to the end.
  22. Well, with all the cager idiot stories this past while, I suppose a biker idiot story had to show up too. As my wife and I approached a red light today on our way home, I noticed a guy on a Harley approaching from the opposite direction with his left turn signal flashing. He was approaching the light slowly, obviously hoping it would change before he had to stop and put his feet down (So tiring you know!). Sure enough, as soon as the light changed he cranked the wheel left and took off. Of course, since the road was damp (It had just rained a tiny bit for the first time in a while) he had to take it very easy, forcing me to idle slowly forward till he cleared the intersection. It occurred to me that if it had been someone in a hurry to get home and who knew little if anything about bikes, the result could have been nasty. And while bikers would have been blaming the cager for turning left in front of the bike, the fact is that it would have been the biker's fault. What he did was stupid, dangerous and, oh yeah, illegal in this province. We are required to wait for oncoming traffic to clear the intersection before turning left. Trying to beat the first car across the intersection is illegal and in this case could have led to an accident. What's worse is that this idiot probably thinks he's a hot rider now because he "beat me" across the intersection. Some day he'll do that to the wrong person and it will cost him...and I sure as hell will not have any sympathy for him. Morons like that give us all a bad name. Andy
  23. does anyone have for sale/trade a left side fairing cover for an MK1 standard? i removed radio and cassette. sorry, Earl got cassette, but i have the radio. also, i imagine the pocket is different also. i would like one in original condition, no cut-outs.
  24. Just received an email from a married buddy - subject line was "my wife left me" _________ The wife left a note on the fridge......... "It's not working!! I can't take it anymore; I've gone to stay at my Moms!" I opened the fridge, the light came on and the beer was still cold......... What the hell is she talking about?!!
  25. So... I'm in a KOA in kopeke NY. It's karaoke night. Hmm. I left Winnipeg last Monday and have had my share of issues and have gained a large respect for the power of this site. Our members are awesome! Thank you Jay and Craig and families! I am on my way to Nova Scotia in 2 days to meet my better half. We are going to ride through the Canadian Maritimes and then to the international Maybe the tail of the dragon after. Depending on the weather. I left Craig this morning, became hypnotized by a winding road! And this is where it dropped me off Hey, I come from the land of right angles. It happens. I now have to push to Halifax. Now it's an Eagles duet at karaoke. Hmmm. That's it for now, I can't keep arguing with my playbook. It's winning.... Tom
