  1. Well its probably a good thing I am planning a MD soon. This morning I headed down the road and was concerned about the weather and I felt wetness and it was antifreeze on my r leg. It seems I may have a leak somewhere in the front near the radiator as the water/antifreeze hit me calf level down on the right leg only. It was not a lot and I managed to turn around and get back home with no aissues. Funny thing was the water/AF was never even hot on my leg. I guess I will need to take a very good look to see if I can tell where the leak is and hope its a hose and not the radiator. I did not realise it but, this may have happened last friday as I saw a silver substance on the r sid e engine but could not tell where it came from ant though perhaps it was something someone spilled passing by. I had not ridden since then due to work around the house etc. This time when I returned home I noticed the antifreeze seems to turn silver on the engine. Does that souond right??. If anyone has experienced this let me know what you found. I am hoping this is just an upper hose that just decided to let go.. Now time to go back to the drawing and see where those hoses etc are located and how to get to them.
  2. My rear tire (yes, it is a car tire) on my RSTD has had a slow leak in it few several weeks now. This morning I found what looks like a small nail or brad it the center of the tread. I don't know how I missed it. I even had a buddy look for nails while I slowly backed the bike. The question is: have you ever run a tire (c/t or m/t) on a motorcycle with a plug in it? If I am going to the trouble to pull it off to patch it on the inside, then I will probably go ahead an put a new tire on. But I am seriously considering plugging it. I know the thinking that on a car, you still have three more tires should it fail, but I have never had a plug to blow out of a tire before. Leak air yes, but not blow out. Give me some feedback, please. Jeff
  3. I'm looking for the inside half of a saddlebag for an 84 Venture. If anyone has 1 kicking around please send me a PM. Will also consider buying the whole thing if anyone has them. I had a bottle of brake fluid leak and it ate the bottom out of it!!! :snow2:Getting tired of winter had freezing rain last night.
  4. Rode my bike and noticed a pretty good oil leak on the left side. Appears to be coming from up around top on the motor, under gas tank, right around or above the rubber housing by the carbs. I haven't pulled the tank to see if I can see anything else. Has anyone had this problem that could give me some clues on what and how to look for this leak? Thanks in advance. Update: Finally had a chance to run the leak down. It appears to be gasoline rather than oil. Right under the air filter box there appears to be a rubber joint with a clamp on it that connects from the bottom of the air box to the top of the carb. ( I think) The clamp is set at the top of the boot, right below the air box, and will not tighten up. If I move it to the bottom of the boot, at what appears to be the top of the carb, I can tighten it up better but there is still a leak at the very bottom of the air box. The bike runs o.k. at 70 MPH. If I push it up to 85 MPH it will blow blue smoke until I take it back to 70 MPH.
  5. So, a week or so ago I rode the naked venture into town and fueled it up. I hadn't had it on the road before and needed to make sure it was capable of motorating under its own powerization. It works ok, now its time to start painting,,, Anyhoot. In the mean time, the whole house smells of gasoline, and I go out to check on it, and it has lost all the fuel. The tank is bone dry. The concrete isn't wet and it didn't leak out while running, so I am pretty sure it isn't the carbs. Are there any typical leak points on these scoots, or should I figure on removing the tank to repair rust?
  6. I have had an antifreeze leak on my 1999 RSV for some time now. I have narrowed it down to a certain area that it is coming from. I need help on what to do. It is coming from the bottom of the side cover of the head. I am wondering if I take the side cover off is there a gasket or not? If it is not possible to be the side cover then do you think it would be the head gasket or the water jacket joint? I am going to attach some pictures? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I don't know a whole lot about motorcycles. Thanks hairman
  7. I plan on doing the front steering bearing. About 2 years ago the right front fork would not hold the 7 psi air pressure any longer. It would leak out within a day as I recall. I have not had any air in them since then. I checked the value, then replace itand sprayed soap all around and I could not detect any air leak. There's no oil around the fork seals however I'm not sure exactly how it is routed in the fork. Who's had their forks apart and where else could the air be leaking? I figured it would be worth asking before I got involved. Thanks. Spotsy
  8. So cold here that I think my garage door is swearing at me in the morning! I've had this issue with the coolant leak on my 89 VR and it leaked again:bang head:, this time I found 2 leak points first 1 was at the drain and the other is at the base of the plastic elbow going into water pump. Hopefully both easily fixed( in warmer weather)! We'll see soon enough!!!!!! Everyone stay warm and be very careful outside:snow:
  9. 2nd Gen owners... You may have a slow water leak.... and not even know it. This slow leak can only be seen when the fuel tank has been removed because of its location. The water hose clamp I found leaking is located just above the right hand side engine dog bone. The leak will appear as a white powdery substance on the rubber hose, or on the hose clamp. You may even notice a spot or two on the TOP of the rear valve cover located on the right side front jug. Look carefully because it looks like dirt. I was able to turn the clamp tightening screw about 6 turns before it finally became tight on the hose. NOTE: Do not over tighten the hose clamp where it cuts into the rubber hose. I enclosed this picture to help you see what it will look like.

    Radiator

In the process of pulling the starter on my first gen, I found that the small nipple of the radiator was merely held in by JB weld, which I completely disdain, and when wiggled just a smidge fell clear out. After looking at some of the ebay prices, and trying to shop around for a used one, I took mine to the radiator shop and asked if it could be fixed. He said "absolutely, won't be a problem". I asked if he could flush and leak test it as well, and asked the expected price. Then he drooped his head and said, "Well, for something like that it is pretty expensive." I thought, "Oh hell" Then he said, "I feel like I am stealing from you, but the time is what you are paying for. I have to ask for thirty bucks." I said, "Well, a guy has to make his money."
  11. Hey all. My bike has been sitting awhile (2 weeks) and I started to take it for a spin yesterday so I started her up and let her run while I got my duds on. One thing led to another and I did not get to go on my ride so I shut her off and went about doing something else. A while later I walked by and noticed a spot of "clear oily substance" on the floor behind the side stand. At first I thought it was water but I touched it and it is thick like oil but clear. I felt up under the frame in the area I believe the leak is from and I felt something but not sure what are where it is coming from. I will investigate more when I get home. Any ideas what it could be? Looking at the left side of the bike it is behind the kick-stand. What is puzzeling to me is that it is clear in color. Oil would be darker and my oil level is good.
  12. This isn't about my scoot but I suppose it could apply. Seems I have a coolant leak at the head gasket just where the head meets the block at the right front of the engine. It's a V8 Dodge 5.2L. There's no coolant getting into the oil and doesn't appear to be any combustion gasses getting into the cooling system (yet). The leak is very slow. I tried a couple inexpensive (less than $15) "stop leak" products but that doesn't appear to work. Been reading about a product called "Thermagasket". I know anything like this is only going to be a "temporary" fix and I'll eventually have to replace the head gasket (which I can do myself) but my garage is full of other stuff including my scoot and I really would prefer to wait until warmer weather before tackling this. Has anyone on here had any experience with "Thermagasket" or other similar such products that you'd care to share? I'm hoping to at least temporarilly fix this leak but I find it a waste of time trying one product and then the next only to find they don't work...would rather try something that at least someone I know has had success with. Thanks
  13. I have developed a leak coming out of the drain cock. It is a slow leak but I'd like to fix the problem. I checked the position it is set and it is aligned with the mark at about 2 oclock. I noticed that there is a O ring behind the the hex shaped front and I think the O ring may need replacement. My question is: Does this hex shaped item screw out thus exposing the O ring? Thanks, Ronnie
  14. I know this has been discussed ad nausium, but here we go again. Which screw on filter fits the 1stGen screw on oil adapter. There's a FRAM on the '91 now, but the writing and stock number are gone. Why? Donno...?? The only thing I can think of is it's been on there for a very very long time. I haven't changed the oil in it since I picked it up... but then again I haven't taken it anywhere either.. I thought I'd try putting MC specific motor oil in it to see if that will cure the leak. From what I can see it looks like it's coming from around the back of the pan gasket. I also found traces of silicon around the drain plug as if the PO thought that might have been the source of the leak?? And ...he may have put a synthetic in the motor?? It worth a shot to see if it'll work. Anyway, again, what's the filter number. Anyone?? If that doesn't work I'll be taking it over to a tech. Getting too old to be crawling around on my back. A chair is a good thing...
  15. My '85 VR is pretty stubborn about wanting to leak a little from its rear valve cover, no matter how hard I plead with it. Is that fix more trouble than it's worth if the leak amounts to approx. a thimble full after parking from an all day ride (with the understanding that it ALSO leaks some DURING the ride)? I can do the job, I just don't know how crazy it would be.
  16. My cruise control won't engage. The lights all come on like they are supposed to, but it won't engage. I found the thread about the cruise control and a possible vacuum leak. It seem like I saw one where a high idle rpm after the engine gets warm was also because of a vacuum leak. I am having both problems. After the engine gets warmed up it idles at between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Could these be related or caused by the same leak? Thanks for any help you can give me. Jackie
  17. WOW I just came back from Napa here in Windsor and I bought a can of Seafoam. It cost me $11.90 plus taxes (cdn) I complained about the price to the counter clerk and he said that everyone says the same. I told him I could get it in Detroit for $6.99 to $7.99 a can. I'll stock up there next time. Then I was following someone's post about using Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak to stop a front fork leak and that was $13.21 plus taxes for a small bottle. I sure hope it stops my small leak. What a ripoff it is in Canada. DonB
  18. I have a small oil leak. It looks like it might be coming from the drive shaft. It's on the pavement just behind the sidestand. It's not much, but I plan on leaving tomorrow for Mississippi. Anybody have any ideas. Is there a place I can check the level in the drive shaft? Don't want any trouble on the road. Thanks for any help you guys can give me. Jackie
  19. I was out riding around today and decided to stop at Golden Corral in Newnan. As I was pulling into the parking lot I noticed a couple getting off a bike. As I was walking in I passed by the bike and they had a severe gas leak, gas was running pretty steady onto the ground. I saw them inside and told the guy about the leak, and he said "Yeah I got a leak in the tank." They just continued on with moving in to get some chow. I could not believe that he was unconcerned with getting hit with a Hazmat violation, or that they were crazy enough to be riding like normal, stopping for chow, etc with a serious gas leak.
  20. Sorry, just noticed that I posted in wrong forum. I have an oil leak that shows up on the left side of engine (sitting on bike). The oil is coming from just behind that chrome bolt and large washer that kinda protrudes out from front middle, left side of engine. The mechanics say it is the O-ring seal that is between starter and engine ? It was replaced, and I checked, it was leaking before I got home from dealer(160 mile round trip). I first thought it was just some oil residue from the intial leaking. But it is not. Mechanic says can't get to it until next week. :bawling:I have been waiting on him now for 2 weeks. He says that the seal is really hard to get to, and was possible that it got pinched when replacement was done. 1..What do you all think it is? 2..Has anyone else had this problem? 3.. Any suggestions? Problem solved. Head gasket leaking. Bolts noe prperly tourged from factory. 9/03/08
  21. A friend at work picked up a 2001 V Star 1100. It has a small oil leak on the front of the motor! Is this a common problem with these motors? The leak looks like it might be coming from a small cover behind the front exhaust pipe, the cover looks to be round with 2 Allen bolts on either side to tighten. Does anyone know what hat cover is for? Thanks for the help
  22. Hey everyone, OK, I bought a 1983 VR a few months ago. Love it! Runs great! Looks good. But it had a bit of an exhaust leak. I thought that it might be something with the rear manifold pipes running down to the h-pipe (or whatever its called.) So I went to e-bay and picked up the parts I needed. The only problem is, now that I've put them all back together, the leak is even worse. I don't know what to do now. I'm very frustrated. I've taken these things off and put them back on mulitiple times. I just don't know how to seal them any better. Should I use something like J-B weld? Or is there something else? I've looked over the forum but can't seem to find anything that will help. ~ Frustrated in Ohio
  23. last month my 84 Venture sat for about 2 weeks. Apparently she was lonely and to show me she started dripping oil @ the seal of the right shock. Just a small leak so I kept riding. Well she didn't like having to sit again for another 2 weeks, so this time she dumps a puddle of oil about 6" inches wide from the front wheel to the rear. How is it that it can leak "up" while just sitting in the garage? Thanks in advance
  24. I called 2 local Yami dealers and each told me that I needed a different kit. One said the kit was several items that totaled about $50 and the second told me that alls I needed was teh 2 seals for the slave kit if I was dealing with a small leak. I am dealing with a small slow leak but want to make sure I change out the right items. Is the 2 seal changes enough typically?? On another note I won a set of RK pipes yesterday fro $16.50 yesterday and they are local to me. So I will get to add them as soon as I arranage for the fitting I need from our member who is selling them. My clearview arrived yesterday so I guess I can give gunboat his shorty windshield back. Thanks for letting me borrow it gunboat!! I out of town at the moment at sons house in RoundRock Tx but hoping I can get my biek back on the road and take a ride next weekend. have a great weekend everyone jb
  25. I just picked up that V-Max final on Ebay. Thinking about installing it in the '91... once I get that oil leak plugged.... Should be interesting....
