  1. Well being the fine, well educated, expert on motorcycle engines that I am (NOT!!!!) I have developed another oil leak. I solved the first leak by finding some loose bolts over the second chrome cover (smaller one) on the left side of the engine. There were three bolts on top of the engine block behind the rear cylinder that were loose. Well the leak is back but not as bad. Well being the genius that I am I figured the smaller chrome piece on the left side was just a cover and I needed to take it off in order to see what was under it so I could check and make sure the bolts are all tight. WRONG! As I was taking the bolts out I started on the left and went counter clockwise until I got to the one at 6 o'clock. My allen wrench turned freely. No big deal since I thought it was just a cover that I would take the bolt out and tighten it when I put it back in. When I took the bolt out I noticed unlike the other bolts it had a copper washer on it. Now I'm thinking to myself why would this bolt have a copper washer and the rest not. Almost like it was trying to keep something from leaking. Well I srugged my shoulders and said to myself I'll worry about that later. I started to pull the cover off and man o man did the oil start rushing out. :yikes: I quickly pushed the chrome cover back on and started cleaning up the mess. Well I think I found my leak. I will put all the bolts back in and cross my fingers and hope that was all it was. Now for the final question. Do you think it would hurt to use the blue Lock Tight on the bolts to keep them from coming loose again. The one with the copper washer is the main one I am concerned about. Harry:doh:
  2. My 87 model has developed a significant oil leak in the last few months. It does not leak when parked, only when it warms up. It drips about once every 12 seconds, and because of the crossbar that supports the footrests, I could not tell where it was coming from. I thought it was from the shift lever, because it has always leaked a little. I removed the crossbar. It appears the leak is coming from the middle of the crankcase behind the torx head screw that is directly below the big round sidecover (with the Yamaha logo). One of the torx crankcase screws was not torqued fully, but the one pictured was. There is a tiny metal tube under the crankcase and it appears wet. The bottom of the crankcase in the front where the fins are appears dry. There is a light haze of leakage on the heads as well, shown in the last pic. It wipes off easy and I don't think it has any bearing on the drips. An I sunk here? The oil gets all over everything and is a mess. Thanks! http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab244/bigpixels/xarm.jpg http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab244/bigpixels/dripdrip.jpg http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab244/bigpixels/tinytube.jpg http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab244/bigpixels/dripdrip2.jpg See the drip??? Here is one head....They are all "weeping" a little..http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab244/bigpixels/headseep.jpg
  3. I have a 2007 RSTD pouring fuel. Searched the threads here and figue it is a stuck carb needle. The leak occured after utilizing seafoam. I guess some of the debris it loosened created the sticking needle problem. Dealer wants $648 to fix !! I'm all thumbs with tools so I really have no choice. Any other suggestions? Also, is there anyone in the Central Arkansas area (other than a dealer) than can sync the carbs for me? If so let me know where and when we could meet and a cost. Thank you !! archeryguy
  4. Another newbie question. Are Venture's prone to getting gas in the crankcase like the Yamaha Virago's if the petcocks leak or do not shut off? Just checking for overall impressions. Thanks again Don
  5. For the last year the rear air pressure in my '87 would leak from 40lb down to 20lb in about 1 day then on to near 0 in another day or two. Sometimes faster, sometimes slower. Each morning I would pump it up with my 0-60lb gauge hand pump from Progressive. Reading aroud here mostly about 2nd Gen shock leaks someone mentioned putting in some tranny fluid into the air fill line to swell the seals some. I did not have any tranny fluid laying around, but I did have some power steering fluid with leak stop additive. No idea if it hurts or hinders long term but I did not have much to lose so I put in about 1 ounce with a veterinarian syringe and surgical tubing section I had. Now 3 days have gone by including a hour of two-up riding with the nice weather we had today. It has held steady at 40lbs. Crossing my fingers it holds for a long while. I did not have a valve stem removal tool handy either. Rebent a small cotter pin from the junk pile so the ends were the same lenght. Fits perfectly either side of the valve stem. A pair of pliers and it was out quickly.
  6. Hi Everyone, I have a 1984 Venture Royale that has had a slow leak in the system for several years! I loose 50% in 30 to 45 min. (front and back shocks). I have soaped all the lines,, and I do not see any signs of a leak!! Has anyone had this same problem?? Thanks, Steve
  7. Woohoo!!! I got a chance for a short ride on my scoot today. the temp was about -20c and super nice.....lol Brian Actually i was taking the scoot in to fix that pesky oil leak ive been chasing, but any excuse for a ride.....and hey, what the heck the sun was shining and it felt sooo good.
  8. After you have done the crankcase vent mod, have any of you then had any problems with oil leaks or going through more oil? I have done the mod to my 84 and got a very slow leak afterwords. I also put a vacuum cap over the orifice that the PCV valve went to on the air cleaner, which then mad it sound as if a tribble was stuck in my air box. I'm guessing the air was blowing over the orifice on the inside of the air box making it whistle a bit. Kind of like blowing across the top of an empty rifle shell. I'm gonna undo the little mod this spring and see if things change. PCV = Positive Crank Ventilation. When installed it creates a slight negative pressure, (vacuum), in the crankcase. So if there happens to be a small leak somewhere or a worn seal, the negative pressure won't let the oil leak out. If the PCV valve is eliminated, the result may be a positive pressure inside the crankcase as the engine warms up, and due to blow by. Which then might cause a seal or gasket to weep a bit of oil that might not have done so before. I tried this on my 78 F100 once just to test my theory. The results confirmed my suspicions. Any thoughts?
  9. Here is a picture of the leak where is it comming from and why? Thanks http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/VictoriaVett/CIMG1411.jpg
  10. Found a puddle of coolant on the garage floor, It is running down from the Head area of the right back cyclinder. Took it to dealer and it will be approx a week before they get to it, service manger said he have to wait until the tech breaks it down to see if the warranty covers it ?????????. Is there any reason they shouldn't cover it? the warranty is good until Aug 2010. they replaced the stator under warranty so I would it would cover the coolant leak 05 Venture
  11. I have a popping and burbling on my right exhaust pipe, especially on decelleration.AIS has been plugged.Resynced the carbs yesterday with Morgan Carb Tune.I had a set of Harley Street Glide pipes on it,found an exhaust leak at the clamp and thought that was what was causing the problem.Removed them and put stock exhaust with the end baffle removed back on.Still have the same problem.I checked the Y pipe for a leak and cannot see one,but that doen't mean its not there.Left side does not do this.It is smooth, like it is supposed to be.It is still under warranty, but if its not warranty work,My dealer where I bought the bike charges $120 per hour.I can't afford that right now.I hope some one here can help.Any ideas? The bike has 8500 miles on it and is a 2007 RSV.I thught about changing plugs. I don't think it will help, but stranger things have happened.
  12. Ive develpoed a gas leak. Noticed it today when I was under the bike listening to the collector rattle anf trying to decide what to do with that. The collector can wait. What I discovered was a gas leak at first what looked like it was fluid leaking from the rear shock. Pulled off the right side abs cover and can see the fuel leaking from somewhere above the rear shock and then running down the shock. Cant see where it is coming from though. It only leaks when the motor is running. Not sure if it leaks when the key is on but the engine is not running I will go check and edit the post as soon as I can. Anmy idea where to start or what will be the easiest way to get in there and see . Hopefully I can do this myself as it will have to sit if it needs to go to the shop. mONEY IS TIGHT WRIGHT NOW. aNY IDES WILL BE WELCOMED AND FOLLOWED UP. tHANKS IN ADVANCE, dAVID
  13. OK, the saga of the '91 continues. Kurt replaced the 'O' ring behind the gear sensor and let the bike idle for around an hour. Then he took it for a ride and then let it sit. No oil smoke and no leaks. Rode it over to the house and let it sit on the side stand for the better part of an hour.... nothing. Cool!!! Put the bike away on the center stand and the next morning still nothing. Sync'd the carbs etc. Let it idle for a while and the next morning... on the center stand.. there's an oil puddle about the size of a 50 cent piece under the bike by the left center stand pad.. Never started it again and while I'm gone to Cody the patch grew to the about 6" across with fresh drips. All by the left pad of the center stand. Here's what I'm looking for. Can anyone think of a reason that would cause a bike to leak oil while it's on the center, but not while it's over on the side stand?? And where in the engine would the oil be deep enough to leak on the horizontal and not on the lean?? I talked to Rocket about it and he suggested trying some of that florencent dye in the oil and then black light it, and I may do that. Any other ideas?? BTW the right side bottom of the motor is dry as far as I can see.
  14. I found a leak on the front caliper today, and took the caliper off, cleaned off all the gunk and had a look at it. I couldn't see any place where it was leaking, so I split the sides, the rubber washers were good, so I reassembled them with a bit of anaerobic sealant out side the perimeter of the rubber washers as some added assurance. Bled the brakes and everything works. Are there typical places that I sould double check that would leak on this?
  15. It looks like I have a coolant leak around the #2 cylinder head gasket. So should I take it to the dealer or should I try to torque the head bolts myself?
  16. Well my week started off oddly enough. I got my water bill on Sat. and it was $80 which is very strange. According to the bill I used 11500 gallons of water. I was gone a week during this time and Jeff isn't here. Normally I use about 2000 gallons a month. Went down to ask what's up with this and they said you must have a leak. So I come home and no leaks in the house but I check the meter again and write down what it says. Too late to head back so I decided to check again this morning and it was a lot higher. So I go around back and find lots of water back there. Seems the water leak was where it comes into the house. Now I panic I'm not a plumber Jeff's gone what do I do. So I called the water dept to get them to turn off the water because I don't know how to do that. Then I called ADC. He came over checked the situation got the bad stuff off and went for parts. Came back and fixed my leak turned on my water and everything is good to go. Now I don't usually call folks to help makes me feel like I'm being a bother or a pest. But I needed someone to help since I didn't know what to do. Arthur not only came over to fix it he won't let me pay him for the parts. I figure I'll get him back for that one later. Maybe at a meet if Josh wants something and dad says no. Reason I'm posting this is without this site I'd never have met Arthur even though he only lives like 10 mins away. So I want to say thank you to Arthur where everyone can see. So he knows how much I appreciate what he did. I felt kinda bad calling thinking he was at work, but he had today off. Kinda felt bad imposing on his day off. Ok now back to what you all were doing before I interrupted. Margaret
  17. Ok, so I've been pretty lackadaisical about the '91VR since I bought her. After repairing the rear trunk... big project... and replacing a couple of cracked dash boards, it came down to trying to find the leak above the collector without a whole lot of success. I eventually pulled the middle gear cover to see if it might be that. Changed the gasket, and put a new crush washer on the bottom cap screw. Still leaked. That's where I started to loose interest, and also winter was settling in. So it sat. I don't want to pull the collector... Then I picked up the HB camera probe thinking it would help. It did a little bit, but not enough. So pulled the middle gear cover again to see if I could locate the leak. With the help of the camera I checked every possible place it could be leaking oil. It was dry as a bone everywhere I looked. A couple of screws holding the gear indicator were a little loose so I snugged them up a bit. Not because there was evidence of oil coming from the area, but just because. Put the cover back on again making sure. If it still leaks the only place left would be the pan gasket or the pan itself might have a crack in it?? Anyway the search goes on. Now, while I've got stuff somewhat off the bike I decide to check the air cleaner and diaphragms. Other than not wanting to idle real well, the motor was running very solid.. I previously did adjust the idle screws on the two carbs I could get to without removing a bunch of stuff and it did help, so I figured once I get serious about tweeking the carbs the idle would clear up. So pull the air box lid. It's got a K&N. Cool... Weights a ton. Oil soaked. I take a long screw driver and check the slider movement. They're good. So I go ahead and fire up the bike. #4 diaphragm deader than a doornail. 2, 1 , and 3 are perkin' along just fine. Now remember the motors running strong. MOF while I got the lid off the box it's still running great??? I've never had one where the motor didn't run like poop with the lid off. It was like the filter and lid weren't even needed for this thing to perform.... on 3 cylinders to boot... Anyone else had a bike that acted like this?? I bought the bike from a small builder/dealer, who in turn bought it from a private party. I have no history or heresay on this bike. I asked the dealer to get the name of the guy he bought it from so I might get a little history, but he's never gotten back to me. The bike had all sorts of mods done to it externally, but I haven't got a clue as to what's been done internally. I guess it's going to be a discovery as needed thing?? The motor's got me buffalo'd. Could it be a V-Max? Or maybe V cam and heads?? I guess only time will tell. Meanwhile I gotta find this dang leak. I want to ride it to Cody.....
  18. Ok well need little assistance guys. So my 99' has 69,000 on it and just last week i parked in the garage for few days because i had to drive to work. after about day 3 i noticed a small river running from underbike to garage door. so i checked it out and it looked like it was coming from the rear shock. I have heard this before that they go bad just all of a sudden. so i cleaned up the mess and check the air pressure in it. 0 it had so i filled it up to 40lbs and rode to work. when i went to leave work it still was hold at 40lbs. here we are on thursday and still 40lbs in it. should i be looking for a different leak back there or is it possible that it can hold air and still leak oil. HELP! i dont want to replace the shock if i dont need to.
  19. Well the bike will be sent to the dealer at Sumter to fix the vacum leak under warranty. Fixed the helmet speakers on Wanderer's helmet too. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20Mini%20MD%2020090613/
  20. Friends, I am knew to the forum and as I have looked around I cannot find the answer to the problem that I am having. I drive a 96 Royal Star. I am having a gas leak from a hose that comes down the left side of the bike. It is a hose that comes down right under the choke pull. It goes down into the area between the cylinders and ends at a rectangle bracket. On the other side of this bracket there is nothing, just the hole of the hose that is connected to the hose. This is where the leak is. I figure this should be an easy fix, but looking at the service manual I cannot find what the hose is nor what should be on the other side of the bracket/guide.
  21. Hi gang, I have a neighbor that stopped by yesterday and asked me if I wanted to buy is old goldwing, For the past 5 years I kinda have seen it parked in his garage and always told him that you need to ride that thing to keep the dust off of it. It has 42K on it and he say the carbs leak but starts, I see that it is in good shape , so ask how much?? He say's (5) I think and say $5,000.00 ??? He say's nope $500.00, my Question is how much are these going for these days? I am sure 500 is a pretty good deal and might pick it up this week to restore it a little , won't take much. but was wondering are the carbs on that year hard to work on? Carb's leak a little when running... What do you guys think? Thanks for any input. Jeff
  22. Hi, I'm new so hope I'm doing this right. Anyway, I just finished taking the back end of my 85 apart to get the gas tank out as I have a fuel leak. I drained the tank (lots of rust bits came out) and filled it with water to see if I could find the leak. So far it does not appear to be leaking. The only reason I went after the tank was that I lose 1/2 tank of fuel in about two days with the petcock closed. Anyone know where else it could be leaking? The sending unit does not appear to be leaking and the petcock is brand new (changed it last fall as I thought it was leaking). Anyone else run into this? Could it be a seam that opens when the temp changes? Although I put cold water in and now the sun has heated it up pretty good. Anyone try the POR-15 products to clean and seal their tanks? Anyone know where a good used dealer is that I could buy one from? Thanks, Ian
  23. Ok here goes. The 86 VR I just brought home a few days back has a minor oil leak. Minor; but still a leak and leaks can get worse. The leak is somewhere in behind and between the stator cover and the main gear cover. Isnt the stator gromet and isn't the main gear cover gasket; somewhere further in I believe. What is back in there that can leak oil? Can the slave cylinder leak oil; clutch rod???? Any help and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  24. Hi- We have an 05 Venture with a Motorvation Royale side car that was put Mar 08 by Motorvation. We had no trouble all last summer. We got the bike out lasr weekend and noticed a radiator leak. We took the sidecar off and got it to the dealer this am. The dealer has called to say that the frame is flexing and causing the fan shroud to rub on the back side of the radiator causing the leak. It is not covered under warrenty and will cost $1000.00 to repair. Has anyone here heard of this? Any ideas on how to prevent it from happening again? Any info will be helpful Thank you Beth
  25. Finally got the time last nite to tear the carbs back off to find this pesky harley-esque oil leak! Somewhere off the #2 cylinder. Replaced crush washers for the oil delivery pipe to no avail, figured I would pull the plugs, disable the ignition, etc. to just spin the starter to find it. Didn't find anything till I pulled the #2 carb intake boot off and saw the oil come up out of the top left screw hole when I spun the motor! Then it hit me that it was seeping around the screw and coming down around the boot as I had seen. Put a small amount of rtv around the hole, re-installed the intake boot and let it sit overnite. No more oil leak! Yeaaaaa! NOW I can clean this motor up and mama can wear her white tennies again! One more item off the list! Dan- who will struggle till it gets figured out!
