  1. Ok, I know this subject has been written about many times. Please trust that I have read many posts on the whine. My issue does seem to be a bit different than the others I have read, so here goes. I have a 08 RSTD. Bought it used last November and loved it from the first time I sat on it. Had a 04 BMW R1150RT that I never did never "clicked" with. Not the RSTD, it was love at first ride. I read as much as I could find on the whine as soon as I joined VentureRider. After getting what I think is a pretty good understanding of the whine I concluded that I did, in fact have it, though not bad at all. I would say, like many that have written here before, I would not have noticed it without reading about it. A “George Jettson Car sound” from start to stop, nothing else. I rode through the fall, into the winter (God Bless Texas) and finally spring. Now this is the warmest it has been since I owed the bike. As soon as the weather hit 70+ degrees it started. Between 39-42 mph (by my GPS, not Speedo) I now have a deafening Howl! This sounds nothing like the whine. It is of a frequency that seems to go right through my earplugs and into my skull. Ok, ok, it’s only between 39-42 mph, right? I can easily drive around that. Sure, no problem. Forward a few more weeks. Now it’s 80+ degrees and I still have the 39-42 mph issue and now have added 60-65 mph. Same sound, a howl that it comes from nowhere and drives me NUTS! This cannot stay. I am more than happy to take it in and have the clutch replaced. It just doesn’t seem to quite fit the classic “whine” scenario. Now for some background facts: The bike now has 7500 miles. The oil is Castrol Dino 20W-50 No Motorkote or any other additives. It not the tires because the howl stops as soon as pull in the clutch The bike had its 4k service last Nov. The howl didn’t start till spring What do you learned gentlemen and gentle ladies think the issue is? :confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24:
  2. I did post this on the other thread. But wanted to give all a heads up... Well, here I am. Finally able to breathe. Been working on these carbs for weeks. Got a spare set off Ebay. They were in good shape. I used the #3 & 4 bank w/new parts needed. Now my power is linear. Did 125 mile back road ONLY ride. Speeds of 45-70. My overall average was close to 55mph. So, I was using a lot of the pilot jet. Went and filled up at the end of the ride. I really tried to get in as much as I could in the tank by shaking the bike on the center stand...could only fit 2.9 gallons in. That's 43mpg in the hilly area I live in. Pretty damn good and close to what I always got for the past 20 years with this beast. NOW-Neither #3 nor 4 plugs are black. #3 is light brown spot on the tip and #4 is almost white, like 1 & 2. I have #3 pilot screw is 2 ccw turns out and #4 is 2.25 or so-ccw. Note: all settings using digital tach. Prior to this latest carb work. I could not break 40mpg. Last remove / rebuild times, the float/fluid height was dead on and did not change. But still had it too rich somehow. NOW-Something just works better with these Ebay carbs. I know there is something I must have done wrong since the original carb rebuild a year ago. And #1 and 2 have never had an issue. As far as #3&4 problems, I am not entirely sure what the cause was or is on the originals. So my original set of 3 & 4 will just sit. I will be getting it EGA'd soon, to get this finished. I don't think #3 should be the only "brown" plug. But it's better than the black I had before. And the fuel mileage speaks for itself. Thanks for all the suggestions. Even if I haven't a clear idea why she was rich and what I did to fix it. Now if it skips/misfires at idle when hot. My profession being in electronics. I am not worried if it's an electrical issue, coils, or TCI. Because that's all that's left. Hope this is the last of this issue. I bet you hope the same... You must be tried of me by now.
  3. Well I'm finally getting the dreaded chirp noise on my 02 midnight. With about 11 k miles on it I guess as time goes on it will get more pronounced. Checked with the dealer about the basket change and he said the noise can still be there but may move to a different rpm and speed, but most likely won't go away. I will admit it is getting quite annoying, even my wife is noticing it to. I've had the bike almost 3 years and have tried to really like the bike, but just can't seem to get it to grow on me if you know what I mean, and now this. I like the bike for the power, comfort, and roominess, but I just can't get a liking to this bike. Was over at the dealer last week and they have an 07 on the lot on consignment, nice bike, low miles, I asked why it was for sale and the sales guy said he really didn't know the guy just wants to sell it. I've considerd selling mine last fall and now the whine issue may be the deciding factor this year, if I can only convince my wife as she likes the bike. I've been using Amsoil 10w40 since I've had it and what is the opinions on going to a heavier oil or back to dino oil ? will it quiet the chirp? Dealer says the repairs parts and labor would be around 400.00. but it may or may not cure it. Bike is out of warranty so that's not an issue. Not sure what to do at this point, any suggestions or opinions may be helpfull, thanks...
  4. To EVERYONE that Just Received A Second Gen. Clutch Spring Upgrade Kit! It has been brought to my attention that the Clutch Diaphragm Spring in the Second Gen. Clutch Spring Upgrade Kit is thinner and produces less clutch gripping pressure that the stock spring. Because this Diaphragm comes in a sealed package, I did not think to open one up until I was notified. IT IS IN FACT THINNER THAT THE STOCK SPRING, and is not the spring that has been shipped in earlier batches of the kit. I received 29 of these springs and suspect that the last batch has been packaged incorrectly. If you have not installed the upgrade kit yet, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL THIS KIT UNLESS YOU CAN MEASURE THE THICKNESS WHICH SHOULD BE .070". If the spring is measuring .055 to .060" thick DO NOT INSTALL THIS KIT. Because it is the weekend, I can't get in touch with the vendor who supplied this part but you better believe that come Monday morning I will be bending his ear about this issue. For any one that has done the install already, I will furnish a replacement spring and new clutch cover gasket with shipping at my cost for your trouble. In the future I will open and measure EVERY spring that I receive before it is shipped. I apologize for this problem and will do all I can to take care of it as soon as possible. Another short term "fix" is to Double your old and the new Clutch Diaphragm Spring until I can get more springs that are the correct thickness. I have REMOVED the Ads from the classifieds until this issue is resolved and like I said earlier in this post I will measure every spring before I ship it from now on. Again, I apologize, Earl
  5. I just have to say how happy I was to find this forum and I'm new here. I recently bought a 2006 RSTD which went into service April 07 so it still has a couple of years of warranty but after a few rides I had some things come up that I wanted to look into. First off I had the moaning shock issue which I found out through looking through the forums is not that unusual and that the shock is a bit of an issue on these bikes. The other question I had was about what oil and filter to use and other maintenance items which I also found answers to. So I guess right at the moment I haven't any thing else to look up but wanted to say that while reading through the many many threads I realized what a supportive and knowledgeable bunch of people hang out here and that I'm glad I found you all!
  6. Sorry if this has been discussed before, I have seen some threads that comment on this issue but they do not seem to be exactly the issue I have. I picked up my 2009 Venture on Saturday and drive it home (120 miles) and the radio worked fine. Today I went out and I turn the bike on and the radio comes on, same station I had it on when I turned it off, however the controller has no information displayed and none of the buttons work, therefore I can't turn it down, turn it off, change the station and worse yet can't turn down the volume. I really don't want to drive 120 miles back to find out I could have flipped a switch here or there or did a quick fix ... so if anyone can help me out I would appreciate it! Thanks and I am happy to be a new member. Keith
  7. I have dealt with various bike part suppliers over the years and for the most part they have been pretty good people to deal with. Most would bend over backward to help you out. Flatout (Part shark) even expressed me a part right before I went on vacation and only charged me the standard shipping rate. Competition accessories is always outstanding. I have ordered factory parts from them years ago when they sold them and mostly apparel and shoes from them now. Tires too! Chromeglow Signal Dynamics and Custom Dynamics are other good companies I have dealt with. Our own member vendors have also been right on the money. Metzeler customer service bites the big one, as does Kuryakyn. Now to my latest problem child...JP Cycles! I sometimes bought stuff from their store in Daytona from time to time. Not fantastic prices but they had it on hand. However, a few years ago I had an issue with their internet ordering and after some back and forth they finally resolved the issue after I threatened to post the issue on this site. Stupid me...This time I went ahead and ordered a SS clutch and rear brake line from them. Price was reasonable. Prior to placing my order I had called them to physically eyeball the parts to make sure one end had a banjo and the other a straight connection. They called me back and said the warehouse pulled both parts and assured me that they were the correct lines. I immediately placed the order. A few hours later I get a confirmation email that said the clutch line was not in stock. Hmmmm, didnt they just eyeball it for me? Said it should be maybe 3-5 days. Well, 10 days goes by and no email. Contacted them again by email and asked them for a delivery date. They replied that they could not provide one. I emailed them back that I was surprised that a company the size of JP cant get a date from their own supplier. They replied that their supplier dont give times. I said so I just wait in limbo until someone there decides to send one out? All she could do was apologize. Told her to refund me my money. Not a good way to do business. They made absolutely no effort to even try to correct this problem nor did they seem too concerned to keep me as a customer. No, I didnt even mention posting on this site. Last time it got me a full refund. This time since the part wasnt even available it would have served me no purpose. But I just thought id pass this onto you all. Let the buyer beware!! OK, im finished....just needed to get this off of my chest.
  8. I am sure some one has seen this before and can point me in the right direction. I am at work now but I do have my tools with me. As I was riding to work this morning I noticed a Puff of steam from the left rear side of the engnine and upon looking down I noticed that I had some anti-freeze on the pipes ( silver slivers and specks on hot pipes.) it was not much but there. The puffs at first were intermitten as thoght something was starting and stopping the leak. Now I know there is a water line along the upper frame that I believe goes back to somewhere in the top end of the engine. I made it to work after stopping once to check and see if I could see any water leaking. Getting here I had a constant small amount of steam but never got any indicator lights that I was overheating. I removed the resivor cover and yes It was out of antifreeze. This same thing happened last year on the right side and I never found the leak and until now it has never appeared again. I refilled the resivor and the issue disappeared. I plan on removing the tank at lucch to see what I can find but does anyone have a idea where the issue comes from based on its apparent location on the L rear to center of the engine? Nothing shows up on the Right side of engine and all steam rose from left side of gas tank. Byt he way it is about 67 here so its not from the cold. IDeas??? jb may be walking home. Actually, I have Roadside assistance for towing but would like to fix it here at lunch if possible.
  9. (old issue thought I would throw it out there) Headlights do not work anymore. Doesn't matter when I hit the dimmer switch. They used to work when I hit the brights, now they don't work at all. Newest issue, bought new battery this past summer. Car ran fine. Let it sit for about a week and when I tried to start it up, nothing. Barring a bad battery cell, what else could it be? Father in law thought maybe voltage regulator. I got a new battery tender for christmas and took it like 3-4 days to get a green light. That is w/out it hooked up to the car. I figure a mouse chewed a wire, but not sure which one. When I look in the engine compartment, I can't find any frayed wires. Heck it is 40 yrs old now. Wouldn't be suprised if it is the original starter.
  10. I need a set of first gen mufflers, doesn't matter so much on the condition, just looking for a really cheap price, will pay for shipping. Going to do some "reconstructive" work on the mufflers, so the quality is not that much of an issue Thanks! -CJ
  11. I just purchased a new 08 TD, I live just west of Phoenix. Are there any guys in the Phoenix area (or even Tucson) who do their own maintenance? I would not mind hosting some type of tech day at my house. Changing plugs, oil, filters is not an issue. Removing tires, tuning and snycing carbs etc. are items I would prefer to have help with. Thanks, George
  12. I have a 06 midnight RSV that will only go in to first and not any other gear. I went to two dealers who have never seen this before. I was on the road and stopped for gas and that is when it happened. I pulled back on to the road and bike would not go un to second gear. I went to the local dealer where I was and he checked the linkage and did a basic look over and he determined the issue was internal. I also lost my head light and tail light but I do have blinkers and flashers. Anyone have this issue. Thanks Jeffers:mytruck1:
  13. I purchased a 87 VR with 68K on Friday. The bike has been sitting for 5 years or better, last registered in 99. Went through the carbs over the weekend and she fired right up, sorta. At first I thought I had a dead charging system. I cleaned the connectors and now have 13.63 V going to a new battery. However, after pulling and cleaning a bunch of connectors, I have a dead tach. Re-checked everything and no luck. I also have a number one cylinder that is not pulling its weight. I will check valve clearence and do a compression test on that issue at a later time. The tach was working before, and I can't get the engine to respond to throttle input, I know the cylinder dragging is part of the issue, however it should slowly gain RPM's. Are there known issues with ECM's on these bikes? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I was a BMW / Kawasaki tech in a former life, but that was eons ago. Yams are a little greek to me. Looking forward to a long relationship with this particular bike. Once again, thanks for any hints. Longrider805
  14. Seems there might be some Afro Engineering (or is it Redneck) going on here. What are the funnels (for lack of a better/correct term) Seems like they are not seated correctly on the left side?? Would that make a difference in performance? Should I worry about it? Now that my head gaskets have been replaced it seems like I have less pep/get up and go! Could this be related to a carb issue (air filter doesn't look bad but will probably replace) Do i need to look at a carb sync? If so is there someone within say +/- 100 miles who could (and would) help? btw. fuel is still running around 40 See what else I can find! Thanks,
  15. Help ! , Just 978 miles on my new RSV and I'm hearing a distinctive "click' "click" "click" noise as I coast to a stop! I called my dealer's service dept. and was told to check a shim in the rear brake caliper that may be the "culprit" ( ? ) ...I dunno but it sure sounds like something in the Diff ( ? ). Anyone else had that issue ? I know I need to "visit" my dealer but I'm a bit worried that there is something amiss and don't need to experience a rear wheel lock-up at cruise + on the way there ! Renne
  16. Hello all, Well, it is good to be back here - though I wish that the issues were different. I have something going on that I hope someone might have some helpful info on. It has been a very busy time for me, of late, and I just got around (earlier today) towards attempts to get my bike ready for its first outing. It is VERY rough starting, but I am assuming that a tune-up might be the cure for that. The largest issue is in the regards of my clutch lever. It seemed to be very loose, but I attempted engaging it (with bike running) and proceeded to shift into first gear. Upon doing so, the bike gave a lurch, and then just died out. I then knew, for a certainty, was much more than just an imaginary thing. As I think back on it, the bike was a little hard shifting - just before I put it up for the winter. Now, though, it appears that there is something definitely wrong with the clutch mechanism. Has anyone experienced such as I have explained here? And would such a repair, to correct this problem, be a real 'cost-hungry' one? If the latter is the case, there is a very good chance that I won't be riding, this year. And I truly hope that this would not be the case.
  17. Hello All, I have a 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe that is leaking gas from the air cleaner. Last year I had this same issue but it was from the opposite side. The local shop said that they needed to put in a new needle and seat and then charged $700.00. Although, 45 days latter the same thing occurred again and they said that they had perform the same service, claiming bad fuel is the issue. So my riding season came to an end for the rest of the year because I did not want to spend an additional $700. With that said, can anyone provide any tips or suggestion to resolve this ongoing problem? I am mechanically incline, never worked on a bike but I have built a 12 sec, in the 1/4 mile, Lincoln Towncar. Thank you in advance!!!
  18. I've recently purchased an 85. Love it. Only 18K miles on it and its been well kept and inside etc. I've been working on getting it up to par etc and wonder what I may need to do next. It seems that I have to hold it at about half throttle to maintain a 65 mph, and it seems like it may be missing or hesitant. Running it up to 65 I dont feel the issue and when I romp on it - it really flies. I have new diaphragms installed as of last week. New plugs and wires installed. Been running sea foam through it. I can't figure it out but I do think I have something a miss.. Any suggestions or help is appreciated!

    Helmet Help

I need another helmet. I have a big head but am thinking about one of those flip up full face helmets. I wonder if it is too hot; I live in North Carolina and it gets pretty warm in the summer. Also, price is an issue since I'm retired and still some of money is going to the stimulus package, so I don't have a lot of extra. I ride a 2004 Venture Royal Star. Looking for advice here. Thanks.
  20. What is the issue with I believe the Ventures second gear prior to '87 or so? SS
  21. First of all let me introduce myself. I own a 2007 Venture and live in FL near Cocoa Beach and I am currently active duty NAVY in the submarine force. My questions are: Have any other's had a rust problem on their bikes? Does the warranty cover this issue? On my antennas at the joint where they fold is just covered in rust. After taking the saddle bags and trunks off last week to do a thorough cleaning (field day for you navy folk) on the bike i discovered more rust on the chrome under the trunk and a few spots on the forks. I couldn't find anything on this issue in the warranty info that I have. Thanks for your help Bill
  22. They have (4) pages in the mag. on the 2009 V Star 950. Nice pictures of the bike. About the only complaint was scraping the foot boards in a turn. Other than that all was cool. This is my first issue of this mag. Not bad at all. I like it. :cool10:They also have the 2009 Suzuki Boulevard M90 in the mag. Have a great day if you want to.
  23. On the 86'VR it appears that the starter solenoid has gone "belly up" on me. If I take a screw driver and jump across the two terminals on the solenoid the bike will start, Does anyone have one laying around for a 86 to 93 VR. Also, where in the heck does that small wire go to from the solenoid?!?! It just seems to disappear into the bowells of the frame. I would be grateful for any help I could get on this issue, As you all know, I can turn a wrench pretty good but Electric matters are Greek to me! Thanks Folks, Earl
  24. I'm a new owner of a 2008 Venture and after reading all the threads on the leveling links, I decided to order a set from Diamond R yesterday. Is there any problem with Yamaha honoring the warranty with this slight suspension mod? I didn't see anything mentioned, but was just wondering if it could be an issue. Great site, I've learned a ton in a short period of time, thanks for any responses. Smith
  25. Noticed that I had poor throttle response especially when cold. Bike hesitates when accelerating. Thought issue could be synch so I checked synch. All carbs were pretty much the same, however I noticed that the vaccum was 12KPa. Manual spec gives 37KPa. Could this be my problem? If so what could cause this. Bike is stock 07 with 7030 mile Thx
