  1. Well everyone I come with an interesting story. A while ago my engine was making a weird clanking / rattle noise upon deceleration, in fact I opened a thread on the issue: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=61278&highlight=engine+rattle Anyways, under the suggestion of my local Yamaha dealer, i did a complete oil change and switched to the Yamalube 10w 40 mineral oil, when I originally used a synthetic blend Castrol Activo 10w 40. Mind you the bike at the time had around 6k miles. Within 200 miles (4 days) i noticed clutch slipping through the high gears, especially 5th when i was trying to pass. I tore the clutch apart to see if the spring or any of the friction disks and clutch plates were within spec (yes they where). Put it all back together and same issue. So i grabbed 2 cans of brake cleaner and tore the clutch apart. Removed all the clutch components and thoroughly cleaned all of them. Replaced the oil with the original synthetic blend and the problem has gone away. I do realize that to conduct a proper experiment I should have put the mineral oi back into it to see if it did it again, but I just did not want to go through and dismantle the clutch again. To me this sounds weird, but I'm sure there is a logical explanation. Thanks for your continued support. This site is awesome!!
  2. Hello one of the guys I ride with has a 97 royal star, he has started having an intermittant ignition problem. we will be running down the road then bike dies. stop turn switch of then on hit start button off we go. there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to the distance or the heat. Anyone had this problem? got any ideas? thanks!
  3. Yesterday, I road across the Nevada Desert on HWY 50 on my Venture. As I neared the Utah boarder, temps rose to almost 110 degrees. While I showed that I still had fuel in the tank and I had not yet switched to reserve, I began to feel those momentary surges and sputters which typically occur right before running out of gas. So, I backed-off on my speed and somewhat "drafted" behind a truck for the last 25 miles before I reached a gas station. After filling-up and getting back on the highway, I again began to feel similar surges and sputters occasionally as I attempted to reach speed. This time however, I knew full well that I had plenty of fuel, so that couldn't be it. Then, I began to think that perhaps the in-line fuel filter I installed some time ago might need to be changed. After a little while the temperature dropped down to the upper 90s and my fuel feed issue seemed to disappear over the last 100 miles. So, was it probably a heat-related issue in the carburetors or more likely the fuel filter? If it was the heat which was affecting the performance, what's the best way to deal with it when stuck in the heat? And, if it is the heat which is causing the problem, what exactly is happening? Anyway, we arrived safe and sound, albeit a little bit on the crispy side. Thanks guys and Be Safe! Pete & Sandy
  4. The last few days, my '99 RSV has experienced a total loss of engine power within minutes of getting underway. No loss of electrical power, but the bike just literally "dies" for no apparent reason, and then starts right back up again. In both cases, after I fire it back up, it repeats the process - dies, starts up, goes for a minute and dies, then fires back up. Then, in both cases, after about 10 or 15 minutes of riding, everything seems fine. This happened about 2 weeks ago as well, but then not again until yesterday morning and again this morning. I took it to my mechanic today (the original owner as well) and he can't find anything definitive other then the rubber vacuum plugs below the carbs on both sides of the bike have a small age-related split in them, so they are getting replaced as soon as they come in (I ordered them from the dealer today). The service manager at the dealership has no idea why this is happening unless he tears the carbs apart, which ain't going to happen - at least not there. But he is calling the Yami Tech Center in the morning to describe the symptoms to see if they have any intel or ideas on this from their database of issues and will call me. So, anyone have any suggestions as to why this might be happening? Could it be ignition related and not a fuel issue? I will be taking it out in the morning to see if I can get it to repeat this issue. Thanks.
  5. Normally after reading a post, upon refresh of browser that post is grayed out indicating has been read until a new post has been added. For the last couple of weeks, this greyout has only been happening speratically, typically after dropping off net then back on. This issue is only with my home PC, as still works fine at work. Ya, gota get on site every available chance:thumbsup: Using IE8/Vista. Appears some setting on my PC has changed. Not sure where to start. Suggestions? edit, started up firefox, and hove no problem, so issue is with IE8.
  6. I hooked up my Morgan Carbtune last night trying to get this 93 up and running, and it will not pull any of the sliders on the Carbtune up at all. If you rev it up, still nothing, but on deceleration they move slightly. Anybody have this issue before? I keep the Carbtune in its case, but maybe it needs cleaning? Or is it something with the bike? Thanks for any ideas. I have a Vmax, so I know the Carbtune is properly hooked up.
  7. Last night I had the VR idling (fast- 2000) for about 20 minutes while I fiddled with the headlight alignment and it boiled over. It has idled for longer than that in the past without boiling. The outside temp was about 66F so was probably not a factor. Could not hear the fan going so that is likely the cause of the problem. Did not find anything in the Tech Library and the search will not accept fan as a keyword so anything in particular I should know about troubleshooting this issue?
  8. Hi there all I have been working on restoring a 84 Venture for the last 2 months that was in a garage with 26,000 miles for the last 15 years. I tore it down complete to a motor in a frame and have since down all the updates that I have read on the forums and have a issue at this moment. The headlight bulb stays lit all the time in the dash Evan tho the head light works on high and low and also the tail and brake light stays lit in the LCD Evan tho the lights work. Does anybody have a idea where to go to test or has anybody ran across this issue before. Thanks I will have pictures of everything I have done so far posted when I get a internet connection that does not take 24 hours to upload. Thanks in advance. AL
  9. I read some articles on the Ventures having this issue. Is this something thats common? I may have second thoughts on purchasing the 07 Im looking at.
  10. I have a 2000 RSV. Suddenly yesterday it was very difficult to downshift. Upshifting with my heel remained easy. Seemed to be easier to downshift if I was at lower speeds. After riding for several hours it worked back to normal. If it is a linkage issue any idea how I would adjust it? Doesn't seem that it would be an internal issue because I didn't feel or hear anything. Thanks for your thoughts. Bob
  11. Following is a "very condensed" version of my experience with Earl (skydoc_17) and his 2nd gen clutch upgrade kit. After installing the kit, I was not happy with a specific aspect of the results. Sorry, I hesitate to go into details at this time other than to say the kit does work. In any event, Earl has provided me with an acceptable workaround that should solve my specific issue. By this I just wanted everyone to know how very helpful Earl has been, and willing to ensure my full satisfaction, even though I really wasn't asking anything specific from him. I explained the issue, told him what I did to correct it and he went the extra mile (actually more) and offered a better solution. Thank you so much Earl, there are so many who could learn what the meaning of Customer Service is from you. Also I want to thank Squeeze for his input and expertise in this matter. What an amazing group of people we have here. :thumbsup2: :thumbsup2:
  12. Some of you may be having problems accessing the site. I have wasn't able to access it for a while either. I have spoken to our hosting company and it is NOT a problem with our actual site but a routing issue that they are working on. Hopefully things will be back to normal soon. Apparently there is an issue with some routers somewhere along the Colorado border. Here is what I was told: We are experiencing a 20gbit DDoS attack and we are working to resolve the issue. You will be updated in this ticket when more information is known.
  13. If we have any members who are in law enforcement in the Longview, Texas area, please sent me a private message and let me know. I'm looking for some advice on an issue.
  14. 85 Royale Last year it seemed to me that my clutch would not engage until it was almost fully released. This is the opposite problem that most of us seem to experience. Mostly we have problems with being unable to get the clutch to release, due to a bad master, or air in the line or a soft line. But my problem is that I feel that sooner or later, the way it's going, my clutch will refuse to fully engage and start to slip. That being said, I cannot get it to slip when fully released. I had that problem a couple of years ago and so replaced the clutch, and cleaned and rebuilt the master and the slave. So I'm looking for thoughts on this issue.
  15. Has anyone ordered from carbtune lately. (since the cartridge bomb issue in the fall) My order was shipped out Dec. 17th. I still have not received it yet. Carbtune replies to my e-mails and just says SORRY this is a 'Homeland Security' issue and they cannot say how long it will take for me to receive it.........they state it will arrive by ground mail and tell me there is no tracking no.......(huh?)I know that they are a stand up company but, this is getting annoying. Any one else waiting on a carbtune?
  16. Anyone ever have this issue? See pics. What's odd is that the DEALER (who remains nameless at this point) said he replaced the complete INNER FAIRING piece about 6 weeks ago (under warranty) to resolve the exact same issue. I cracked the fairing to replace a stereo cable...and low and behold...the windshield bracket-to-inner-fairing mounts are completely broken. Thoughts? Is this a COMMON issue that all RSVs have? Or am I just "lucky"?
  17. I regularly read the Roadbike rag on the news stands. I was going thru the Nov '10 issue and found an article on group riding on page 73. Looked at the picture on the first page (only way to truly read any rag or book) and saw two RSV's in the foreground of the pic. Are these anyone here??? If so you have made national publication. That was the Nov '10 issue of Roadbike on page 73.
  18. I just bought a 2007 U.S. Midnight venture and my mechanic has detected a rear end howling which he thinks is a warranty issue. Does anyone know about any rear end issues with the 07 venture?? Any help greatly appreciated
  19. Hello, I have a couple of things working against me here. I am new to the Venture so I am not sure how things should work based on other rides, and I bought my bike used so I do not know what mods/problems the PO may have done/had. I have searched and read all the items on this site I can but have not seen the same issue I have. Okay, When I press the set button, the set light comes on but no cruise engages. If I press and hold the res/acc button for a few seconds, it does engage and seems to work, although with a few mph swing up and down. Not really sure how consistent it should be so not sure if this part is right. Also, once engaged, pressing the res/acc will not increase speed, but press and hold will. Ant ideas where I should start checking?
  20. I've searched and cant really find anything on my problem, usually people have the problem that the brake light wont come on.... my issue is it wont go off. I tried doing some trouble shooting and I unplugged the foot brake switch with no avail so its looking like its the upper switch. I took the upper off and it seems to be moving freely, if I knew where it plugged in at I would unplug it to see if the light went off. So.... anyone know where it plugs in or have any idea what it could be???? Almost forgot... 2006 RSTD with 30k miles.
  21. Tore the rear of the bike off for maintenance and look what I discovered- a crack in one of the grooves in the middle of the tire. Just installed last year right before the Int'l Rally. Warranty issue?
  22. I am trying to figure out the problem that is been confusing me. I have had my carbs cleaned and was still having an issue so I pulled the wire off of the right rear plug and put in another and placed it to the block to check for a spark. I noticed a small spark when I turn bike over than stopped until I reached 4500rpm then recieved a big spark. repeated the same test to theleft rear and noticed no spark at all. Would this be a wire or coil issue? I have a 1985 Venture royale 1200 cc
  23. Was out last evening to just ride a while and was doing some low speed weaving in my lane. (like weaving the in line cones) was doing about 20-25 and heard/felt a little bumping noise that was reminiscent of a wheel bearing. I stoped and did what I could on the side of the rode to check for a loose front bearing. Don't seem to be that but!!! I checked (searched) the forum and most people said it was probably a tire issue. They look good. Met 880's Before I get it on the rack, What are the best ways to determine the problem in your opinion?
  24. My Zumo 660 (I believe) just decided to stop providing verbal directions. I have taken it out and placed it in the auto cradle and it still won't talk. Everything else seems to work OK. Anyone had an issue like this? If so, how did you fix it?
  25. I have a 2000 Venture and had it for a week or so. Thought the riding lights next to the headlight would come on automatically but they don't. Read my book and searched for a switch and can't find a way to turn it on. The PO put LEDs' on signals and the canceling doesn't work. I was wondering if maybe these issues were connected some way. The turn signals not canceling is an issue. I am worried about it from a safety stand point so need to try to figure out how to fix it. Appreciate your input. Bob
