  1. Had the bike(98 RoyalStar) out for a few hours every thing seemed fine. The next day went to start the bike and nothing,no lights ,nothing. I looked at the battery and it was a little wet like it was leaking.I bought a new battery charged it up and still nothing.I've been searching around a little and was thinking May be some thing fell off the switch or some thing dumb.checked the ignition fuse, looks ok.I did not check the Main fuse,I saw that looking around the forum,I guess the location for that is behind the cover at the left passenger foot rest?Is that some thing I can tell is cooked by looking at it? Is there some other common thing that causes this I should be looking at? Thanks jim
  2. how do I clean conection at key switch? I'm having problems with no spark on back plugs. I read in one forum possile low voltage from key switch,I've already checked ohms on pickup coils & ignition coils. I had a problem with my key, (I could not turn it) so I used black carbon lube in ignition. Could that cause a problem? thanks Al
  3. Anyone on that can answer a question about the wiring of an ignition by-pass switch?????????? errrghhhhh 770-624-4569????
  4. now this was scary this morning.. I had been away visiting family yesterday and had to leave the bike out in the heavy rains overnight.. because I have a dodgy ignition key slot cover, I put electrical tape over the hole where the key goes in to prevent it from flooding.. This morning, I go to the bike and go to start it: Key goes in, turn key, electricals come on as normal and with the bike in neutral, I hit the starter and the engine turns once to what feels like to a full compression then stops.. Another press of the starter button and the bike starts normally, runs normally and all is good. That 'stop at compression' thing happens every once in a while, not sure what causes it or what it means but it doesn't seem to cause any harm.. 10 minutes later I'm leaving and pull into a gas station for a fill up.. This time when I go to start the bike, I get that odd 'cranking over to full compression stop' but now all the electricals are out.. ooops!! Turn the key full to the right, red switch ON, no headlight, no radio, no instrumentation, nothing.. wow, its like the battery got disconnected.. no smell of arching or burnt wires, check the ignition fuse and it's good. huh? Nothing.. I move the bike out of the way of the pumps and try it again.. nothing.. nothing. No juice.. ouch.. I'm 500 km away from home and prolly 5000 kms from a decent Yamaha dealership that could help me out.. I cycle the kick stand a few times, remembering something in an article about this.. not sure though.. I wait 10 minutes while chatting with someone about how nice my 'harley' looks etc.. huh.. And then the bike starts as if nothing was wrong.. Mind you, the radio has to have it's channels reset and the trip odo went to full odo as if the bike had it's battery disconnected. So odd! The bike ran well and well, I decided I had better head for home. Luckily for me I had a spare key on the bike so when I had to do fuel stops, I left the ignition "on" with the key but killed the engine with the red switch, used the spare key to open the gas cap.. I was leery of wanting to turn off the ignition switch with the key in case I could no longer get juice through the system again like it did earlier this morning. When I got home, I shut the bike off via key and turned it back on.. every thing is back to normal as if nothing wrong ever happened this morning.. I've been back out several times this evening to see if I could duplicate the error but nothing.. it's all good.. (knock on wood).. So the question is "what happened this morning" ?? Will it happen again? I'm worried this is going to develop into an intermittent problem like my fuel pump did to me last summer.. it would fail every so often but never enough to be properly diagnosed until it finally died the big death.. I'm thinking I will soon need to replace the whole ignition switch (where the key goes in) since the spring loaded slot cover doesn't slide over anymore.. Does anyone have any ideas or comments on what happened or what I should do? $136 for a new switch..
  5. OK I believe i have an ignition switch going bad. I turn on the key and nothing other than the stero works. I keep turning it off and on and finally the dash and everything else comes on 28,000 miles on the bike. Does everyone agree it's the switch and if so where is cheapest place to buy one and can I keep the original lock and key.
  6. Next time your bike wont start or run right because of wet weather or washing, try spraying the entire ignition system including the plug wires with a heavy wet dose of WD40 or other quality penetrating oil. It will flush the moisture away and 9 times out of ten the bike will run normal. 2nd point if it works it is a good indicator that some part of your ignition needs replacing.
  7. I find that the number 2 cylinder on my bike is not firing so I swapped the #2 and #4 plug leads to see if the problem lay with the ignition coil and is appears that this is so. Does anyone know if there is an easier way of replacing the coil other than the way Yamaha intended this to be done, ie remove the fairing, the motor, cut a section out of the frame, replace the coil and then reverse the process. Many thanks.
  8. So, I'm putting an '86 1300 engine in my '83 Venture, and I will be using my '83 1200 carburetors. I was told that the '86 coils & TCI unit are better components than the '83 ignition components, and that I should swap them into the '83. Upon looking around in my '86 shop manual, I learn that the '86 ignition system spark timing advance goes like this; vacuum from the 1300 carbs goes to an electronic sensor unit, which sends signals to the TCI unit via the '86 1300 wiring harness, and the timing is advanced in certain vacuum states. If this is the case, I will not be able to use at least the '86 TCI unit in my '83 because of (1) I'm using my '83 1200 carbs, and (2) my '83 wiring harness will not accomodate the '86 electronic vacuum sensor signals going to the TCI unit. Can anyone verify my research and logic, and verify that I will NOT be able to use the '86 TCI unit in my '83. I think I should still be able to use the '86 coils, but, 1) are they better? & 2) Why are they better? Thank you! Doug Nordin
  9. Ok, I put some 1.5 inch risers on my bike this morning and it was a PITA to do. All the hoses and cables seem to be OK but I found that when I turn to near full lock on the bars, the handlebar clamps hit the center console next to the ignition switch. Does anyone have a remedy for this?? It has already marked the chrome in that area!! Pics below.
  10. Well I pulled up to the gas pump today and pulled the ignition key opened gas cap and filled tank. Put key back in ignition and key will not turn????? Handlebars are not locked and key works every where else (gas cap and bag locks) any ideas??? Had to load bike on trailer to get it home. Any help would be appreciated
  11. Ignition timing – Check the timing and/or adjust, How to? Since I am in the process of doing some maintenance on my 06 RSTD (sync of carbs, installation of new plugs, oil change, lubrication etc, I thought I should also check or adjust the ignition timing. What are the procedures / guidance for doing this work? Where is the fuel filter located on the 06 RSTD motorcycle and how difficult is it to change this filter since I will have the fuel tank removed during this work. Are there any kits available for making this task any easier in the future? Thanks 2 Flights
  12. Well, my key was pretty hot today when I turned off my bike. Although my thermometer did say it was 97 out (in the shade), and I was riding for ~4-5 hours or so... In the sun. So, while I don't think I am having premature switch issues, I just figured it was time that I come up with a quick and easy bypass. I know that there is a write up for doing this and cutting the wires on the bike to wire up the bypass for when it fails (and I will probably do this if absolutely necessary), but what I would like to do is get a plug and play setup going, so all I have to do is unplug my faulty ignition switch and plug in my bypass (using the existing wiring). I have also considered dismantling my current ignition switch for inspection and cleaning - as an attempt at a preventative measure. Question: Does anyone have an old ignition switch (failed or not, I don't care) that you wouldn't mind sending me? Either the whole switch or snip the wires as close to the switch as possible (so I have a decent length going to the plug-in connectors left over). I'll pay shipping (obviously). Thanks in advance!! : ) - Rick
  13. This may have been posted here but I am trying to bid on one and I need to know if the ignition switch out of an 84 will fit and 88 venture. I also need to know if I can get the tumblers out of the new switch without the key. There is no key for the switch I am trying to buy and I want to put my old key back in so they are still keyed right.
  14. Noticed the other day my ignition switch was very hot at the end of a ride. When I pulled my key out the key was very hot to the touch. I don’t have passing lamps and have never had this problem. Any thoughts?
  15. Is there a way to rig the flashers on an RSV to operate without the key turned on? It seems to me that in an emergency, you'd want them to work even if the ignition is off. Help!
  16. Hi, Any known endemic issues with the ignition key mechanism on these old gals? I went to ride my red '84 to work this morning but I couldn't get the key to turn in the ignition! I have a Yamaha original key as well as a couple of copies of same, NONE would turn in the ignition this morning. All worked fine as usual in all the other locks on the bike and no precursory events have suggested any issues with the ignition mechanism up to now. The bike has sat for a couple of weeks due to weather and my busy life but was thought to be ready to go till this happened. Perhaps the spirits were telling me that today isn't a day to ride and I am grateful that it happened in my own garage and not out in the wilds somewhere but it is a puzzle. I had to come to work on 4 wheels. What info do we have on this sort of behaviour ? Thanks, Brian H.
  17. Buy it now of $45. Somebody better snap it up! LINK
  18. Been looking at Tach's for maintenance work. I would like one that works with both the Venture V4 and V-Twins. This is the only one I've found that will do from 1-12 cylinders. It also provides three means of connection(s). What type of ignition system does the 2004 Venture have? How about an 2005 V-Star 1100. A Multiple Spark Ignition System orDirect (coil on plug) Ignition System This is the Tach I'm thinking about. Will it work? I like the Inductive Pick-Up on Spark Plug Wire for maintenance work. Thanks in advance.

  20. got a deal on a 96 rsstd w/only 9k miles this summer! been a blast to ride! previous owner installed a dyna 3000, and a barrons big air kit, and aftermarket slip ons. my only issues have been exhaust popping, mainly during warm up, but also during ride when downshifting. and poor fuel economy. about 95miles and i am switching to reserve. ignition is set at 6500 rev limit and curve 4. plugs look good and she idles smooth. any input would be appreciated. thanks.
  21. I stored my 2006 Royal Star Venture in my outside garage in November for the winter. I went to start it today, it would not let me turn the key in the ignition. I tried spraying WD 40 in the ignition but I still can not turn the key. Any suggestions on the cause? I am sure it is the right key.
  22. I wanted a spare key for travels on my '06 RSMV. A friend said that ACE Hardware had the blanks. I had them cut two keys and both were unable to work the ignition switch. They would operate the trunk and the saddle bags, and turn the ignition from Lock to Off and Off to Lock but would not turn the ignition from Off to On. I went to the dealer who said I might not really want an extra key. The blanks were $46 from Yamaha. I don't remember the Owner's Manual saying anything about a chip in the key, but that much for a key doesn't make sense otherwise. Anyone have the word? Just curious. Mel
  23. I started another thread so if any one had downloaded prior versions they would see the update. With help from Ozlander I believe that this is about as good as I can get this schematic. I have added the internal wiring on relays & rectifier. Added coil resistance on relays, generator & ignition coils. Added ignition coil #'s and location on bike. Added bulb p/n's. Cleaned up the wiring in handle bar switch area some more. Overall I have eliminated as many wire crosses as I can. Electrically, this matches what is in the owners manual. I didn't show internal wiring for flasher relay as it is fairly complex, not just a standard flasher. This looks best at 11" x 17" size. Office Max or Staples can print in color at that size for about a dollar. Dingy
  24. After all the probs I had on the bike this summer with electricals on the engine, I opted to pick up a new ignition module (D3K) just for the peace of mind kinda thing.. Erhm can someone point out as to where this is located on the bike? None of the docs I have even mention it let alone say where it is.. Thanks in advance..
  25. K just searched tech section on electrical shorts and says read only- guess I need to ask here. Went to start bike after sitting for 2 weeks and I got nothin, no lights - no power of any kind and no radio. I saw in tech support about the ignition and wire connection burning up and shorting out so I pulled tank off and checked it. Looks fine, also noticed that all that had a ignition problem that their radio still worked. So am wondering if anyone has any ideas before I start removing ignition- Ive looked around for any obvious melted wire connections and no luck so far. gonna do a more thurall search before changing the ignition tho. And yes the battery is fully charged hehe Thanx for any help or ideas
