  1. My 87 starts to get real warm if i let it idle more than a few minutes. Of course, it's been hot here in Florida, but still. I just cleaned out a bunch of gunk, flushed and filled the radiator a month ago. ideas? Thanks, guys (and er, gals!)
  2. Let me try this again; I have hot, as in extreme, air coming of the engine. I pulled the exhaust and found a crack in the downtube and collector as well as broken welds on the collectors mounting bracket. I fixed those, reassembled, thought I had it fixed and suddenly there was that wisp of hot air again. Took it apart again found a pinhole in the downtube they missed when welding and reinstalled with new crushwashers. The other gaskets are in good condition! Went to Rome GA, all was well for the first three hours!! during the last half hour both Brenda and I could feel the heat coming up, by the time we got to Fudruckers things were back to normal. On the way back we had no problem going down to Atlanta but halfway between Atlanta and Greenville, it got bad enough that I had to put my legs on the pegs to get some relief. I locked the throttle for a bit and rested my elbow on Brenda's knee and you could feel the wave of hot air rushing up and out between my thigh and her shin. So in short: -engine temp is consistently showing midway in the green. -weather /driving speed is not a factor, -I have a heat problem that comes and goes. I know RandyA says heat is no problem with shorts on, Randy come ride my bike and make that claim. Folks, I would love to hear some options, why would this not be consistent? If it is exhaust should it not be consitently hot? Where might this be coming from if not the exhaust? How do you trace something that is intermittent and burried under all kinds of plastic? I took the darn pipes of twice now for this and I'm gonna have to find the source of this dadburn bun burner, cause it ain't no fun. This is war!!! I know I could argue winter is coming and I currently have a build in forced air heater, so why complain, but that is hardly the point
  3. I know a lot of you run K&N Air filters.. I have to ask, how often are you cleaning these things out, 'recharging' them as it were? I installed mine last summer, 31,000 miles ago to be exact and just now recharging them (they are soaking with the cleaner right now).. and they are just like brand new except for the spot right in front of where the air comes into the box.. a 2 inch diameter grey spot.. the rest of it is nice and red.. wow.. are you kidding me?? I have K&N's on my VSTAR, mind you they sit out in the open so they require more frequent cleaning but is this right, only once a year? And I've been up and down a lot of dirt roads, rain, dust fog and birds.. I'm impressed!! Or should I be doing them more often on spec anyway? I just did the hot hot water from inside-out rinsing and there was a lot of fresh RED oil floating around the tub.. almost as if these were brand new.. wow.
  4. hi folks back at the '09 international rally i meet two new vr riders from baton rouge,la. deeta & joe. i told them about a ride i had been thinking of, to the tobasco plant in new iberia, louisiana, where the hot sauce is made. it is about a 4-5 hr trip from houston. i have only been there by tugboat to pick up salt for barges for the winter road use. i thought this would be a great way to have a m&e with our fellow v/r riders from the great state of louisiana. i would plan on this around the 26'th of september '09. i'll put this out there for everyone's thoughts. on their web site i saw were you can buy a GALLON JUG of tobasco sauce, just found out they now offer a tabasco brand soy sauce, hot da--. www.tabasco.com. best reguards don c.
  5. I've done some dumb things in my day, but today took ranks right up there in the top 5. Today I changed my oil and added motorkote too. That's about $60 worth of lubricant (Amsoil). I also had cut the rear baffles out of my road king's. I couldn't wait to hear that so I had to run it down the road. Like those alot better. I took another look at the oil level and realized I had overfilled it. To keep this short.....Oil takes longer to cool down than you think. When I pulled the plug out (not hot) and the oil (extremely hot) flowed down over my hand, it was so hot I couldn't get the dad blamed plug back in. Yep, that's right $60 worth of Amsoil & Motorkote right out on the floor. Live and learn, I guess.:mo money::mo money:
  6. Having starting problems. More when the engine is hot. I've noticed that the lights are brighter when engine if reved then at idol. When engine is hot starter drags and sometimes won't turn over at all. Booster pack will make it spin and start with no problem. Just wondering if this sounds like the battery is cooked or if the stator is getting bad?
  7. Hi everyone, A thought that has come to mind after a colleague of mine had some issues with his Honda VTX on a trip..... I have never heard my fan come on, running or after shut down, regardless of how hot it has been outside, how long of a trip I have been on, etc.. I have never had any mechanical issues but wondering from others how often their's run, etc. Thanks Trevor
  8. I:Venture: have a Delphi SkyFi3 coming........Who's been their done that? Hot tips or advice Jerry K
  9. My R/R is out and i'm explorind other than OEM equipment options since the OEM isnt readily available around here. And it would be a new experience. Right now i am running one from an XV535 that is working but for how long i can't guess. it gets supper hot. Probably overloaded ... Anyone know what the voltage from the stator is, i have been looking at a shindengen unit that has a voltage max of 40 volts.
  10. Hi, Today's project was to service the blue '84's TCI connections and in the process, to relocate the TCI unit onto the top of the air box, as per accepted VR.org practice and advice. (I was motivated to do this as my heat sensitive, intermittent, 3k rpm and up misfire under load has become intolerable lately. Cold mornings she'd be miserable / hot afternoons she'd work fine but lately she has been increasingly unhappy even in the afternoons unless its extremely hot. Seemed obvious to me that it was some thermal expansion at a connection somewhere. Likely at the TCI.) Ok so, after a long struggle, I got the TCI free of the bike. In triumph, I sat down with it and a spare unit, bought on ebay a year or so ago, to compare the numbers on the two units. All numbers printed on the silver label match exactly. However the numbers embossed by numbered punches differ by 1. My original has 310 punched on its label and the spare unit has 311 punched onto it. Originally I assumed that the punched numbers were a serial number but ,considering the numbers of these bikes manufactured, it cannot be that I have s/n's 310 and 311. (If that turns out to be the case I'm off to buy a lottery ticket!) Can anyone tell me what these punched numbers represent and if its significant, should I ever need to swap the ebay unit in as a replacement on either of my '84's? Thanks, Brian H.
  11. I have an 87 venture standard that has the typical hot start problem. (Turns over slow when hot ) I'm doing a clutch change and I'm polishing and clearcoating the engine covers, so I have the bike mildly torn down, and I figure it'd be worth taking the starter apart and cleaning it, and seeing what I can do to improve the internal ground contacts. I seem to remember that a member had a detailed post on starter removal, but cannot seem to find it. Anyone remember the post?....if so, how can I find it?
  12. Auxiliary plug under the seat has a cap that removes and it's only purpose I can see is to waterproof the plug. Where can you get the other end to put the two (hot and neutral) wires from my GPS? The plug is already switched to "On or Acc" which is what I want. Thanks!
  13. Hey Guys, I BADLY need some of your wise counsel. I'm the happy owner of a new '09 Venture having just traded off my '07 FJR (Quantum Shift:happy34:). This is my first full boat tourer. For MANY years I've gripped and moaned about windnoise, buffeting, etc. My FEEJER was terrible for that -great bike though... Anyway, you've heard it said "be careful what you wish for". Well I wanted a bike with a quiet ride and good wind protection. Boy, did I ever get it in the Venture. Problem is, on a hot sunny day (96 here in the sun today) I thought I was gonna die from heat exhaustion. I wear a full vented jacket in hot weather, but behind the Venture's shield I got ZIP in the way of airflow. Great when it's cool (last evening) but way to hot today:fiddle:. I badly need additional air flow. It looks like the answer would be a shorter shield, but, how short? I'm 5'11" and am looking through the top 4 inches or so of the existing shield. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions for HOT weather riding? THANKS in advance!
  14. Hello all, I've mounted a set of Pyle speakers, USB charging port, MP3 shelf, and volume control along with 2 RAM handlebar mounts (pics to follow) and have all of the wiring run back to install the 300 watt amp and USB charging port to power. I don't want either the amp or the USB charger to operate with the bike off - neither have "off" switches - and I'm looking for the best place to tap into the electrics. There is a white plug behind the battery with black and brown with gray stripe wires. I've not yet broken out a multi meter but I'm hoping these will supply hot & ground for a tap. If someone could confirm this (and to what amp fuse it goes to) I would be grateful. If there are any other places to tap in I would appreciate knowing where and what color, pix a huge plus. For my "always hot" connections I use a powerlet tap direct to battery so I have that covered.
  15. I bought my first big bike (83 Venture) last week and have been work out the bugs. I got all the dash gagets working except the temp gauge. Is the sending unit next to the fan switch? If so, I swapped it out with one from a parts bike but got no change. The fans does come on when it gets hot. Is there a way to check the gauge without removing the fairing? Are all the fuses on top of the battery? Thanks guys
  16. I know it may be a odd subject... But I need to know. What do you guys wear for underwear on a long road trip? We are planning a 4000 mile ride this summer in early August thru the midwest. Its going to be HOT and sweat will be a problem. Cotton underwear just doesn't cut it. What do you recommended and why? Thank you
  17. Kinda swept in here like the President sneaking into Iraq, but Squid, Lonna and Heather came, ate, wined, hot tubbed, caked, Zeused, slept, breakfasted, Zeused some more and are now gone.......even made special hash brown for Squid. Nothing better than a couple of "Fat Bastards" getting together for some hot tub action......I sure hope no one took those pics. Thanks guys..it was great seeing yous again.
  18. Hey Y'all, I've had a persistent problem with engine rpm-related noise in the radio and intercom, both thru the speakers and headsets. I've posted here and there on the subject. I had the noise improve a little when I improved the grounding on the bike. But it was still significant. Well, I just pretty much fixed it. The factory has 3 noise-reducing capacitors installed: two in the radio noise filter (one for system hot, the other for battery back-up (hot all the time)), and the third near the voltage regulator. Each cap goes from hot to ground and bleeds off noise (AC signal) but doesn't short out the DC power. They say caps dry out and don't work as well as they age. Well, mine are 22 years old! So I went to Radio Shack and bought two 2200 microfarad caps and one 4400. I then bought two more 2200's after I nearly blew one up and ruined them by wiring them in backward and then yanked them out when I heard the gurgling - live and learn :-) I put the 4400 near the regulator and the 2200's at the radio near the existing noise filter, and wired them as I said, from hot to ground. The noise is nearly gone - not completely, but I wonder if the remaining noise could be normal as it's very small. Certain things increase it, as they did before, but on a lower level: Setting the Headphone Attenuator on the handlebar at Max gives a little noise that almost goes away if I set it on the big dot just below Max. The Auto Volume circuit introduces noise. If I have it all the way down it goes away, and it increases steadily as I turn this feature more sensitive. There's a slight hiss in the system even with the engine off - just par for the course I guess. If I crank the Auto Volume and the Headphone Attenuator both up to Max, the noise is still less than what I had before with much more conservative settings. As long as music is playing, I cannot hear the noise at all. In totally quiet times and with the knobs set to contain the noise, I still can't hear it unless I'm REALLY trying. I'm very pleased, been waiting 3 years to do this! The caps are about 5 bucks each, whether you fry them or not! Very good solution. Thanks to GeorgeS for suggesting it! Jeremy
  19. Questions for you electronic tech geek types. I'm installing a cylindrical electrolytic capacitor for noise suppression, from the hot lead to ground. The cap, from Radio Shack, has one end where the lead comes out of a plastic insulating disc, and the other end is all metal with the lead coming out. There is an arrow on the body pointing from the plastic end to the metal end. Is there polarity on the cap? Which end goes to hot, and which to ground? What would happen if it was installed backward? Thanks, Jeremy
  20. Before I got the electric vest I used Hot Hands Body Warmers to ride when it was it was real cold. Since my DR650 doesn't have enough wattage to support the vest for very long I have purchased some more. They are normally $1.97 at Walmart for a package of three but this time of the year they get put on clearance for about a dollar. The bigger sizes really work good to keep your torso warm which helps everything stay warm.
  21. If you are going to be doing any work on your brakes, before you go for a test ride, make sure you have an 8mm or 5/16 wrench with you. If for some reason your brakes start getting hot, a quick temporary fix is to release the brake bleed and relieve the pressure. I keep reading where people work on the brakes and go for a ride and it either gets gets hot or locks up and they are stranded until they can get someone to bring a trailer and wrestle it up on it. Another thing I am seeing is people with a brake pedal that is sticking or not coming back to the correct stop and not bleeding back into the reservoir, causing the same problem. RandyA
  22. Odd thing i had happen. Tuesday night I rode to dinner it was pretty cold as i needed my leather and gloves. the bike was not hot at all and i parked it in my garage when i got home. the bike sat wensday and thurday. Friday I noticed some coolant under it along with my normal oil drip after parking. I wiped it up and checked my bottle level was fine and the radiator cap was tight also. first time ive had the happen. I went out to brekfast this morning with my brother to take my mind off things and did smell some anti freeze but figure it was residue on the hot bike. no leak tonight.
  23. I notice my bike is difficult to start after sitting for an extended length of time. If my bike sits for anytime say over 3-4 weeks to several months it seems to be very difficult to start. I let the fuel pump prime the fuel system...usually cycling key 2-3 times. It cranks strong and fast but won't fire. When I persist it will finally go after excess cranking and various throttle and enrichener positioning. I have tried different enrichener and throttle positions but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have new plugs in. Under normal conditions and in the riding season when using the bike on a regular basis...but not daily....it starts excellent without issues...usually on the first crank when hot and after 3-4 cranks when cold.....and then runs excellent. And then it seems to start best with enrichener full on and a small amount of throttle when cold and just a small amount or no throttle when hot. It seems to me that it's a fuel problem??? Any suggestions?? I have just done the battery cable upgrade and starter internal ground wire modification...but this didn't make any difference to the above issue but am hoping it will help on hot cranking ( i also am noticing the hot cranking problem...but it always starts well when hot despite this). Thanks
  24. I've added a AMP meter, Oil Pressure, vacuum gauge, compass, altimeter and will be adding a oil temp gauge soon. Has anyone added a Oil Pressure Gauge? Mine reads: At startup about 2k rpm, over 60 psi. (Could be over 70 but no graduations over 60) Bypass seems to be working. At 3000 RPM hot 20 psi At 4000 RPM hot 30 psi At Idle hot 5-8 psi Does anyone have a feel if these are about right? Yamaha Service Manual does not specify. (I soon will need a a preflight checklist to drive my Venture)
  25. Manage to pop the miror galss out and back in again on a first gen to get at the swivel screw without breaking it. I was thinking of attemting it with the help of a hot air gun to try to clean up the swival so i can proper adjust and keep my mirror position.
