  1. Profiessional Input Please: I have read most of the threads regarding wiring of a Stebel Horn. I ordered one today so it will be on for a trip I am taking the end of May to Dragon/Cherohala area. I have decided to go with the "in cowling" mounting option. After reading Freebirds Tech article and others here on the forum I would like "confirmation" that I will be wiring it up correctly. 1. Mount horn vertically in cowling to frame. (Using pipe insulation to cushion per a suggestion on a thread and tie wraps) 2. Splice into hot wire from acc. plug and run wire to relay. ( Per Freebirds Tech article) (Increase size of fuse in lower fuse panel) 3. Wire from relay to horn positive. (Tech article) 4. Ground wire from horn to frame. ?????? 5. Splice into pink wire horn button and run wire to relay. (Threads tech article) What am I missing...anything. NOTE: I restored a 110 year old house here in Lynchburg. I did all restoration work "EXCEPT" electrical....Just not my thing..... Since I am under the cowling and want to keep the OEM horns active, do I need to deal with the "brown" wire everyone refers to in the mounting option on the lower right side of the bike?.... Long Tall in Lynchburg, VA
  2. Has anyone mounted the stebel horn inside the fairing. How does it sound in there.
  3. I am contemplating changing to different electrical horns and relocating them. In preparation I am checking the wiring for polarity, on/off with the ignition, etc. I am accessing the right side horn. You know, the one that they have aimed right at the exhaust! I expected to find the pink wire hot with the key on, but I find both the pink and brown wires to be hot when the key is on. I have looked at the wiring diagram, guess I just do not understand how the horn button makes these OEM horns work. I expected to be able to ground the after-market horns and connect a lead to the other connector that would become hot when the horn button was activated. OR I would hook up a lead that was hot when the key is on and the other connector would go to the horn button and be grounded when the button is activated. With both leads testing hot with the key on I am lost. I know one or more of you wizards can explain this to me and point me in the right direction. For clarification, I want to install a pair of compact boat horns out front (106 db each). I know most of you prefer the air horn, but this is my story and I'm sticking to it. Thanks for any help I can get. Mel
  4. I installed by Stebel air horn today and tried it out in the garage. I'm 63 and don't need to be losing anything but boy did that horn nearly blowed out my windows and my ears. With snow on the ground I can't get out but can't wait to use it. I've been reading threads how the horn has saved venture riders and now I see why. Good money spent. Just so you know, this site has been great for someone like me; I pick up so many ideas and safety tips from all you crazies. Thanks.
  5. Ok guys heres my problem, i am adding a highway blaster horn I picked up at autozone for 20 bucks (139db) i am mounting it in the front fairing. i have pulled a 12g 30 amp fused line from the battery to the fairing and i know it runs in to 30 on the relay, 87 will run to the horn it self i am running from the handle bar switch wire to 86 on the relay now my question whats running to 85 i know probably simple answer but basic backyard mechanic here lolol giving it my best thanks for any help
  6. I have a 2nd gen with a sidecar so mounting the horn on the right side is out of the question, even though my wife is hard of hearing.Has anyone mounted the horn on the left side or somewhere else?Pix sure would be nice.
  7. What a woman!!! So my wife comes to me last night to let me know that since my birthday is this month I could order a few things for my scoot, after careful consideration we ordered the passing light bar and lights, visors for all of the lights front and back, and a extra large clearview windshield were also looking at the best ideas on a new horn. My old man toot toot as my wife calls it is fine for the good bye waves but really want a second "LOOK OUT" horn for the bike so I am looking for ideas on horns and mounting and wiring ideas and the more pics the better thanks for all the help and info guys
  8. New-to-me '07 RSV. I can see one horn down on the right side behind the RH floorboard. I can hear the other one but have not been able to see it. It's down somewhere in front of the engine? Maybe I'll have to lie down on the floor to see it from underneath? Now I know why so many posts about replacing the stock horns. A decent bell might be louder!
  9. I had a full day installing an air horn and the Electric Connections LED brake lights. I mounted the air horn on the front of my RSTD on the plactic dirt gaurd located at the top of the forks. just drilled and hole and bolted and it works well. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. On the LED ring lights that mount inside of the rear turn signs had four of the 12 LED's blown! Know I'll I have to take it all apart and return fro a new one. Just my luck. Got the bike all back togetehr and my new spark plugs arrived in the mail!!! I'll save that job for mext week:97:
  10. Well, actually a WOLO bad boy. had to do this the easy way of course:bang head: , I mounted the horn on the top bolt for the airdam, which entailed removing the spacer and replacing it with two nuts to do the final clamping of the horn to the airdam and the engine guard to the support bracket. It didn't help that I first wanted to stick the bolt through from the other side so that I could just tighten it up, the frame pervents that, but I had already drilled out the threads so I needed to add a nut on the inside as well. Now if I just don't have to remove the airdam too often. I do like the location! next will be a new fuse panel (I think).
  11. The LED tail light should have been a quick install, but somewhere in my bikes past someone over tightened the screws for the lens and pulled two of the bosses out of the lens and the third one was cracked. Nothing really holding the lens on except the sticky gasket. So, get out the trusty epoxy and glue the bosses back in. After that dried, install the Radianz board. Job one finished. Now for the Stebel horn. Installed the relay on one of the bolts under the coolant recovery bottle. Removed the old right side horn and connected the old horn wires to the relay. Press the horn button to check the relay and it clicked as advertised. The factory horn behind the left fairing "clunked" meekly. Hum??? Light in my head came on, wonder if the horn I took off the right side of the bike will fit in behind the fairing? WRONG, they are completely different, but when I hooked up the "fairing horn" directly to the battery, it sounded off perfectly! Soooo, why not put it back in place and power it from the new Stebel relay????? Now all I need to do is fish a 14Ga wire under the tank. Done! Put a short 14Ga ground wire to one of the horn mounting bolts, pushed the horn button, relay clicks and the puny little horn is not so puny anymore! Now make up a "Y" connector and hook it up the the relay. Mount the Stebel air horn using the shiny Carbon_one bracket, hook it all up, push the horn button and DEY-YUM it is LOUD!!! The combination of the two horns will come close to waking the dead!!!
  12. Hello everyone: This is my first post and I am sure that I am not doing this correctly so please bear with me. My basic question is this. Is there a good quality horn replacement out there, that does not require rewiring and will basically fit into the stock placements. My horn on the right side does not work and I would like to replace it but I do not want to deal with wiring and similar issues right now. Any help would be appreciated. - Thanks MM
  13. Its been 10 years today since my lovely wife said I do. I cant believe shes kept me around this long. Just wanted to toot my own horn . 10 years together and she rides her own bike too. As I said I;m a lucky man. LOve babe David
  14. My question is the two wires going to the old horn. Should they both show 12 volts at all times? I checked them with a light and both has 12 volts with the key on. And is this the two wires that goes to number 85 and 86 on the relay? Aslo I'm curious of where everyone placed their relays at....
  15. I finally upgraded my horn (thanks to Carbon1's bracket) and added highway pegs. I'm still playing with the adjustments on the pegs.. Right where I would like them they interfere with my air vents, so at the moment I have them just back enough so the vents still work, but I think that they are a little too close there.. I guess I will try them just forward of the vents next. Oh I got the Kuryakyn longhorn offset dually with ISO wing pegs. www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/18/scID/53/IMID/460
  16. Well I wired everything up and gave it the smoke test......and I didn't realize there were two stock horns! Do I need to disconnect the other front horn also? cause, the stebel sounds very weak! not loud at all............any idea's?..... clawed needs help........
  17. This morning when I turned on the key on my "new" '99 RSV, the factory stock horn started blowing. There was also a horn sound :confused24:coming from around the left lower fairing. Turned off the key and the horn(s) silenced. I ended up pushing the plug off the stock horn on the lower right side. Now when when I push the horn button there is a pathetic beep from the lower left fairing. It has progressed to the point there is just a click when I push the button. When I got home, after work,I took that lower fairing off and found a cylindrical "thing" covered by a rubber sleeve. It is the source of the pathetic sound when I push the horn button. There is also a (throttle type )cable running into one end of it. Is this a second horn? Before calling it an afternoon, I hooked the right side horn back up. Now it works properly:scratchchin:. I think the gremlins have realized there is no bell on this bike YET!
  18. Where is the best location to get a good price on a Stebel horn?
  19. Going down a four lane hwy. in Pontiac today, two lanes going both ways. I was in the outside lane and a guy decided to get on it and pass a car in front of him in the inside lane. That means coming over into my lane. I moved over very quick but had no place to go. I was now at his left rear door and getting closer. I finally found the horn. "The Horn" is the WOLO Air Horn. I hit that button and stayed on it. He had his window down and then he over reacted to the LOUD noise. He cut the car back to the right and almost hit the car in front of him that he was trying to pass, as he was slamming on his brakes. The car in front of him was also braking because they thought a freight train was coming. I know for a fact he would have never heard the stock horn. All turned out well. Next time I won't keep it on so long.
  20. I had one of these on my Honda VTX1800 and really liked having a loud horn. Anyone here have one on there RSV is so where did you mount and do you have any pictures? Thanks
  21. A quick notice here to let anyone wanting a horn bracket. I'm temporarly out of them but will be getting more made up after the International Rally. I've noted in my ad here that they're out of stock but will update it once I have more available. I'll update this post as well. Larry
  22. I got myself a Stebel Air Horn but did not wish to place it where the factory horn was located , nor inside the front fairing like most others . The fact that inside the front fairing muffled the optimal decibels that the Stebel air horn provided . Relocating it in place of the factory horn allowed optimal decibel sound on the right side of the RSV, but not on the left side . I wanted equal amount of sound on both sides of the RSV, so I searched numerous possible location as to where to mount the Stebel air horn . I looked towards mounting up in front under the triple tree on the front forks , but not enough clearance and bad idea if the front forks were fully compressed . I looked towards mounting under trunk , but did not want the navigator to jump up and disrupt my driving if I were to suddenly blast away , if you know what I mean . So, I looked towards the underside of the RSV. And to my observation , there was enough room behind the lowers and along side of the oil filter to where a large enough cavity was located to mount the Stebel air horn . I made a mount simply out of 1/8” x 3/4 “ x 2 ½” metal strapping . Using the exiting mounting bolt on the Stebel at which I believe was a 1/4” diameter by 1”, I drill a 1/4" hole on one end to secure to the Stebel horn . I drilled a second hole 3/8” measuring from center of the 1/4 “, 1 3/8” to center . Pictures 1 and 2 show how I made the bracket. Note:You may want to pre-wire the horn mounting as I did by making pig-tails with plug-in terminals as you will have to remove the horn during oil changes. As you see in picture 3, a 14mm acorn nut that is connected to a bolt which passes through the frame . I removed the acorn nut and removed the bolt. Taking that bolt and passing back through the 3/8" hole on the new mounting bracket on the Stebel horn and placed it back into original hole and re-tightened the bolt with the orriginal acorn nut . You will want to maneuver the horn to where it does not make contact to any other part of the RSV, especially the oil filter, then tighten down the bracket . In pictures 4, 5 and 6, you can see that the Stebel horn does hang down lower that the driver’s floorboard brackets , but not as nearly as much that the motor’s oil pan . I have not had any issues as of yet going over obstacles such as trailer loading or curbs, but do take precautions at the least . I also used the air tube inlet that was provided with the Stebel air horn and routed the opposite end up and behind the lowers to not take in water during rain or road wash. Wiring the Stebel, I used the relay provided when I purchased the horn. I mounted the relay under the right side battery cover. There are numerous threads on how to wire up the relay. I chose to go connect the main power to the relay straight to the battery and ground it to the frame. To activate the air horn, I connected the factory horn terminals themselves. Therefore I did not have to monkey around running longer wires, nor adding more drain on the RSV’s wiring. Muffinman was gracious enough to supply the terminals tome and I cannot remember the correct name of these. I have seen at the auto parts store. These terminals have 1 female with 2 male blades on them, which allowed me to both connect the factory horn wiring and the wiring back to the Stebel horn relay . I have been running my Stebel air horn in this location for almost 6+ months now. Placed over 3K miles on the scoot even through major rainstorms. By mounting the Stebel under the scoot, the horn itself is projecting it’s blast towards the ground, echoing the 138 decibels equally on both right and left sides of the RSV. The Stebel horn has not taken in any water to cause malfunction as of yet and with the horn itself is pointed to the rear, it does not scoop up any rain or dirt. Plus I still have the factory horns as well! BEER30
  23. OK guys need some help here, I got my Stebel Air Horn during the week from http://www.twistedthrottle.com and I got the plug and play wiring kit to go with it figuring to make it eaiser to install. Well the connections they have are different from what I have seen here, which are, connect the black wire from the relay post 85 to the ground, so I hooked up to the battery negative. Run the red wire from the relay post 30 with the built in 30amp fuse to the positive battery terminal. Run the yellow wire, from post 87 and hook up to the positive of the air horn. Next connect the ground wire to the negative side of the horn and ground it at the mounting bolt. Install the fuse next. Next run the blue wire from post 86 to the existing horn hot wire. Ok so here's the deal got it all done tried the pink wire first and the horn was quiet and was on at time of turning key on. So tried the brown wire, and same thing. SO then tried both together and got the sound I was looking for from the horn but it still, as soon as I turned the key on the horn sounded. I'm curious as to what will happen if I take the wire on post 85 and hook that up to the pink wire and just hook the brown one up to the post at 86. Any ideas or knowledge of what will make this work with the wiring kit, or am I better off just wiring it the way Larry has it? I do like the whole connection thing they include nice wire harness to plug right into the relay, makes for a clean look and easy to unplug. Anyway, any help would be appeciated, Scott.

    Stebel Horn

I'am interested in getting a stebel horn for my 2006 RSTD and was wondering where other members got theirs, and if any Canadian members now of a place in Ontario were they are available or do I just have to order online. Also would I better off to just get the horn and buy a relay and wire needed myself. Thanks dkip
  25. OK, so like many others, I bought one of them Bad boy air horns at Harbor Freight. The stock horns I had were just about as useful as a tender whisper in an offender's ear, so I had to do something. I bought the horn, happened on to some scrap 3/8" aluminum to cut a bar from, and went to work. The original horn bracket was way too short to mount the air horn, so I cut a new bracket from the aluminum scrap I had. I cut the bracket, drilled the holes and mounted the horn. http://i38.tinypic.com/2pt544i.jpg http://i38.tinypic.com/2885uzo.jpg I ran it like this for a couple of weeks and everything worked fine, but I really didn't like where I had it mounted. It just stuck out there like a sore thumb. So I set to looking for an alternate location, preferably down lower at the front of the front engine guard. We just happened to have a couple of small 90 degree brackets laying around at work, so I spirited them home and got to work once again. Here's what I came up with. http://i33.tinypic.com/2cyo844.jpg http://i38.tinypic.com/16gjtyd.jpg http://i35.tinypic.com/2edyyhg.jpg I like this set-up a lot better. And since I have an extra bracket, I can now mount a second horn on the other side! The overall appearance is a lot cleaner and there is less exposed wiring and I now have two spots where the original horns were that I can use for mounting passing lights. my only concern at this point is concerning heat from the exhaust pipe possibly melting the plastic. I've only had the horn in this location one day so far and I check it every time I stop to see if it's getting hot. So far it's staying quite cool.
