  1. We made it back safe and sound from our Carribbean cruise, didnt have to stay close to the captain in case he fell in the lifeboat. We had a fantastic time, have almost as many pics as Bobbie would take will take me a while to sort through them. This evening after work I will try to catch up on everything I missed here at VR. Its good to be home, but hate to go back to work. I am posting one pic to show I still had time for St. Jude while on our vacation.
  2. My friend's desire to ride sometimes outweighs his common sense. We always argue over who has the best weather source. My weather man predicted this. His called for no precip. At least he made it home safely. http://www.raymondstacy.com/davebike.jpg
  3. I would like to share an experience with you, about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years. A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends at the Marriott Hotel and had a few too many beers and some rather nice red wine. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before: I took a bus home. Sure enough I passed a police road block but as it was a bus, they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise; as I have never driven a bus before and am not sure where I got it from.
  4. I've been thinking about installing a large Home backup Generators one of these years. Probably 20 KW or larger. Anyone have one or have installed one. Like to get myself educated on the pros and cons, also open to suggestions if there might be a better idea. I currently have two propane furnaces (1 for main floor and one for basement apt -rental) and a propane hot water tank all supplied by a 500 gal propane tank. When I upgrade appliances I would consider going to propane ranges and dryers. Need enough power for the following: Main floor home Basement Apt (Complete Set of appliance) Hot Tub Heat Pump(Heat and Air Conditioner) Detached garage/shop (No Welder just normal electricity needs)
  5. Somebody just gave this to me: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/Ggerg1186/Dynamometer/02.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/Ggerg1186/Dynamometer/04.jpg It's an eddy current dynamometer, but I am not sure which manufacturer or how much power it can hold. Based upon the size I think it could handle the power of a certain V4 metric cruiser we all may be familiar with. My father in law picked up for me this morning. I need to get it home from Detroit to IA. It will need rebuilt, but the machines are very simple, just heavy. A set of bearings and some copper wire should get it working again. It will probably take me a while to get it up in running, but I am thinking of setting up a roller and doing some test on Venture mods.
  6. We went for a ride this Sunday started out about 41 degrees @ 9:20 when we left, finally got to 61 degrees by the time we headed back towards home. We wound up riding over 500 miles got home at the last glimmer of sunlight. Was a good day could have used a Taller F4 windshield but it beat sitting here waiting to hear that I won. Just a few pics. http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63478&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63479&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63480&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63481&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63482&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63483&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63484&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63485&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63486&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63487&stc=1&d=1326774095http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63488&stc=1&d=1326774261http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63489&stc=1&d=1326774261http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63490&stc=1&d=1326774261http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63491&stc=1&d=1326774261http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63492&stc=1&d=1326774261 http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63469&stc=1&d=1326773001 http://http//www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63469&stc=1&d=1326773001http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63470&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63471&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63472&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63473&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63474&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63475&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63476&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63477&stc=1&d=1326773406 http://http//www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63469&stc=1&d=1326773001http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63470&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63471&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63472&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63473&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63474&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63475&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63476&stc=1&d=1326773406http://http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63477&stc=1&d=1326773406
  7. Well,Santa Clause finally found my home today. Been waiting 4 months on this.
  8. Yesterday as I left work, I looked to the east where home is & saw very dark clouds. I thought, "Guess I'll be in quite the downpour by the time I get home." I also noticed it was quite cold. (My Gerbing's heated gloves are a joy.) So, as I reach the plateau (where I live), it's hailing. No big deal. Well, about a half-mile ahead it decides to dump with an accumulation of about a half-inch. Whoa! Tires a-slippin' & a slidin'. I'm down to a crawl between 5-10 mph, as are all the cagers. OK, I'm thinking I should just pull into the high school parking lot & park, call my wife at home & tell her she needs to pick me up there. Can't. No one will let me get into the right lane to turn into the lot. OK, maybe I can make it down the hill without an incident & go kind of the long way around to get home. Yeah, it's a flatter route once I get down that hill. I'm trying to stay in the tire tracks of the cagers while I'm thinking that everyone must think, "What is that guy doing? He must be an idiot riding a motorcycle in this kind of weather." All is well, so far. Now I'm at the light ready to turn left with the green arrow & this turn is about a 120 degree turn, with hail covering the ground, with wide wet painted lines for the crosswalk that I can hardly even see. "OK. I can do this. I hope." Going about 2-3 mph through this turn. Ah, made it. I'm puttin' along in 2nd gear (usually do this road in 4th). Half a mile later I must go through a round-about & make my exit at the 3rd right (270 degrees, 3/4 of the way around). Again, I'm only going walking speed through this round-about. OK, almost home. Only a 1/4 mile to go. I've got to start going uphill & then turn left into my driveway. Oh man, not looking forward to this. Driveway totally covered in hail. Successfully turn into driveway, tap my brakes twice to open the garage door, paddle through a 3 point turn so I can back into the garage. Yippee! Home safe. Sheesh! Talk about pucker power. Still icy this morning. Took the 4wd truck to work.
  9. Well, my Twins left today for their new adoptive home in Oklahoma. It was a trade off...the Twins or a Venture. Picked the Venture ( and the right choice of a 1st Genner). Still sad to see the girls go. They were a different type of fun. But time to move on to bigger and better things....
  10. The day before Thanksgiving, while preparing to set up a large turkey frying pot, Johnny, a friend from work, sustained 2nd to 3rd degree burns over most of his upper torso and head. He was life flighted to UF Shands burn unit in Gainsville FL for treatment. I talked to him by phone several times, all the while I still couldnt picture the agony he was in. They did a skin graft and so far its doing well. He made it home a few days ago and I went over to see him. It all hit me hard. While his face sustained some pretty severe burns it wasnt as bad as I had imagined. The rest of his upper body was wrapped up pretty good. He described the experience to me and it all came home pretty hard. Hes a pretty easy going guy and quite gregarious at times so to see him in such pain really had an effect. He says the scrubbing down is the worst. He served in Iraq at least twice that I remember and he said this is 100 times worse. He has developed a bad fear of fire now. We did manage a laugh when he said that if he was ever back in Iraq and caught and they brought him by a fire he would give everybody up!! Even laughing hurt him. But he still has some of his good humor with him. Just say a prayer or have a good thought for him as he recovers.
  11. May we all remember what sacrifices our military are making, and say thank you to one of them if you see them out and about, and make sure we all thank them during the entire year. Christmas Poem TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY THE MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, 'SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.' THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.' ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. 'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,! AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.' This poem was written by a Marine. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable..... PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men, women, and Canadian Forces for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed. Robert Rahn Afghanistan Police Mission Kabul Afghanistan rjjammer
  12. Last few times I've cruised through the chat room, nobody was home. So I thought I'd put out the word this time.........
  13. Anybody have any imput on this topic? Wife and I are contemplating building a new house. I know roughly what type of dollars we would be looking at for a stick built or even a redi built home moved to our farm. Today out of curiosity I stopped and looked at a few modular homes. I was rather impressed with what I saw, and some of the dollar figures impressed me even more. I can save alot of cash going this route. The mod would be put on a full basement just like the stick. Its obvious that there are things in the mod that arent as quality as the stick/redi built. So my question is, is it worth going with a mod for the savings? Or does it come back to bite you in the end? The stick we looked at is a very high quality home, kind of a cadillac I guess you could say. So id say the mod is more like a chevy. So am I fair to say both are good, and it is more like a chevy vs. a caddy?
  14. The following post from Freebird got me thinking. How can I determine how much data I currently use, to determine future options? I am possibility looking to change jobs, and the new employeer is asking me to be within 45 minutes distance, which would require moving. This weekend I looked at an interesting place, but severly lacking internet wise. ATT telco but no DSL, no CATV. Only saving grace is in sight of, and 5 bars of ATT 4G cell tower. Currently 4 computers at home running on catv 6meg service. Never download movie or music, but sometimes large document files. Lot of ebay and VR.org:). What would be options for home based cell internet? How can I now figure typical data use at current home? Any other suggestions-I know find different house.
  15. Just thought I'd try a Hail Mary here -who knows when you might connect - We have been looking for the perfect retirement home/property in the Texas Hill Country for the past year - found lots of interesting places, but nothing just right yet. Want 10+ acres for privacy and hunting, plus a decent home Privacy and seclusion a must, live water a HUGE plus. Willing to buy separate hunting property if we find the right home site on too small acreage Our favorite areas are Bandera, Wimberly, and Llano, but anywhere in the Hill Country is possible. On the very slight chance anyone out there has a lead on Hill Country property, give me a shout! Goose
  16. Had this left over. Before I throw it in the trash, is this something any of you Hams could use? Free to a good home, you pay shipping...
  17. Her Diary; Tonight I thought my husband was acting weird. We had plans to meet at a nice restaurant for diner. I was shopping with my friends all day, so I thought he was upset that I was late but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing so I suggested we go someplace quiet so we could talk. He agreed but didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; he said "Nothing". I asked if it was my fault he was upset. He said he wasn't upset and it had nothing to do with me and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him I love him. He just smiled and kept driving. I can't explain his behaviour...I don't know why he didn't say "I love you too". When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly and watched TV. He seemed distant and distracted. Finaly, I could not bare the silence so I went to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed too but just layed there quietly and fell asleep...I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster! His Diary; My mororcycle won't start...can't figure out why!
  18. I sent my bike to Florida this year with a friend who was taking his truck and trailer down with him to his winter home. It will be down there until April when he will bring it back, unless I ride it back. His home is in the Titusville area. We plan on flying down a couple of times through the winter, the first one being in early December for around 10 days. So I am hoping there are some Florida members or others who could offer some suggestions for routes and neat things to see (other than the normal Orlando stuff). We plan on doing the Florida Keys for sure and wonder whether following the Atlantic shoreline down would be worth it or if we should simply follow the Florida turnpike or I-95. We are also considering heading North towards Jacksonville and Savanah Ga and then over to Macon, Ga and back down. I always try to avoid interstates, so if anyone has any ideas for routes to and from these areas I would love to hear from them. Thanks JR

  21. Grab a beverage, there ain't no easy way, or short one to explain my day. Voices in your head are good. Yes they are! I woke up this morning and had things to get done, but I had this lil voice in my head telling me to just stay home. Every time I'd think I need to run here or there I'd get this "JUST STAY HOME" thing bugging me. I kept busy around the place and got some stuff done in the basement and did some cleaning. It was progress anyway. But, I had to stop in on a couple of my clients stores to check displays. So as it was pretty nice out I took the bike as I usually do. I didn't get three blocks from my house and hit the red light at my first turn. I was several cars back so I had to wait for a chance to turn after the green turn arrow went off and oncoming traffic went through. I had what looked like a clear shot after that and started my left turn. A car coming from my right side ran his red light at about 40 mph and missed me as I slammed to stop. Not easy in the middle of a turn and with that danged voice yelling "I told you to stay home!" I didn't know it yet but I should have gone home. I was only three blocks away. I gathered myself and headed on down the road to Interstate 80 and got on East bound headed for Iowa. Normally a 15 mile ride to the first stop. The local road crews have been hard at work again doing resurfacing and they had a new stretch about 100 yards long where they had been grinding the surface again. I hate that stuff because they suck at it here. Deep and wobbly grooves and it can take a bit to keep it rolling straight through it. Checked my mirrors and dropped my speed a bit and rolled into it. I checked the mirrors again and another bike was coming up fast on my tail. I still doing 60 and he's gaining. I try to move to the outside a bit and I look again and he's right there against my right saddlebag . I mean less than a foot away. I hit the end of the rough stuff and jazzed it hard and pulled away form him. He did not try to pass me again. He must have known how I felt about him at that point. And that danged voice was rattling on and on and on. OH! Shut up! So I'm making progress, about half way to my first stop. Now there is another section of construction at the 13 St. Exit. I'm in my left through lane and nobody on my six. Cool. I have one car in front of me on my right doing about 55. Seems to be doing ok so I move to pass. About the time I get even with her rear bumper I see the left turn signal come on and I get one blink and she's moving into my lane. Jeesh! I hit the brakes and the horn and she swerves back into her lane and slows down. Ok, get around this one. I start to pass again and she swerves right back against me. I'm braking and moving to the breakdown lane and the same time and she just rolls on. I caught back up to her in about a 1/2 mile ahead and pulled up on her right side. Yep, what I figured. Texting! And the voice is saying "I told ya so." Yeah, yeah....I'm riding. Leave me alone. Ah ha! My exit. A couple hundred yards and I'm good. So I make it to the parking lot and I stop at the cross walk in front of Sam's to let the busy shoppers roll back to their cages with their hard won supplies. Got a parking spot in my sights and I'm thrilled to be there. I made it. Now I'm sitting there with the bike in 1st and waiting for a clear shot. All of a sudden I'm shooting forward. Kind of thrown against my backrest and going ahead. I thought I'd slipped off the clutch lever but my hands were still on the grips. Only went a few feet but is was a bit of a surprise. Totally unplanned! I looked in the mirrors and there was nothing there, nutttin, nobody, nada. Very odd. I threw down the kickstand and leaned it over to get off and there were people running towards me. What the heck! I get off and turn around and there was the reason for my rear end jolt. A frigging scooter. A lil bitty scooter. And a lil old codger laying next to it. He had a couple of decades on me so I'll call lil and old. And dumb. No helmet, no gloves and a T shirt. At least he didn't have sandals on. He's bellowing about his wrist being broke and his knee is bleeding. He's being a PITA about his "bike" and why I had stopped at the cross walk. I'd been there of about a minute so he had time to see me for sure. One of the folks that came over called for the EMT's and the police. They actually showed up in pretty good time for a parking lot accident. Two of the witnesses told me and the LEO that the codger had come out of a parking lane and never slowed down while turning in behind me. He was dragging both his feet on the ground the whole time. An experienced rider, I think not. I wandered over to the EMT's as they were looking at him. Nothing broken and just a scraped knee. He's gonna live. The scooter, probably not. Those things aren't made very well. I looked at him and said, "You are the reason I was supposed to stay home today." The voice said "That's telling him." Ah shut up! The last thing I heard out of the lil voice was "I told ya so! You never listen to me!" So looking over my bike I had a smudge on the rear light bar. Nuttin bent, broken or damaged. Almost a 900 lb bike VS scooter= I win. Ya know, I don't wanna sound like a wussy but I took a different way home. Long way around, mostly side streets. Spidey Sense was on full blast. I'm taking the cage to work tomorrow. 45's in the glove box. Bring 'em on! I'm proud. I survived my first ever motorcycle accident involving another vehicle. Alive, well and looking for the meds to deal with the lil voice. Mike

Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep - I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster. Husband's Diary: Boat engine wouldn't start. Can't figure it out.

  25. Well, this is our last full day of vacation. It seems like forever since I have been home. After a week of sales meetings at our company resort in Wisconsin, I got home last Friday night and spent the night at home before leaving for Lake Cumberland in Kentucky at 5:00 on Saturday morning. We have been on a houseboat on Lake Cumberland since last Saturday. Tomorrow we turn the boat in and head back home. It has been quite an experience for me. This was all Eileen's idea. She felt that I needed to get away from civilization for a while and get some rest. She thought that being on the lake with no TV, Internet, etc. would be good for me. Well, I cheated on the Internet. Tethering my Blackberry to my laptop gets me a connection. Not a FAST connection but it could be worse. I've been good though and only checked email and the site a couple of times a day. After our first day here, I thought that I was going to go completely stir crazy. I couldn't even imagine spending a week here with no fast internet and etc. Then a strange thing happened. I actually started relaxing a little bit. I found that I could actually sit on the front deck of the boat, watch nature, fish a little bit and actually feel fairly content. Now I've reached the point that I actually am not looking forward to returning to civilization. So tomorrow night, we will be home again. The only thing that I'm NOT going to miss is the approximately $200.00 per day that this boat sucks up in gas. That is in spite of the fact that we have spend most of the time docked in secluded coves.
