  1. Greetings friends, I have decieded to have my trunk rack re-chromed. While it is at the plater, I need some hole plugs to plug the holes till it gets back. I need to do the same thing to my fiberglass trailer too, which will be permanent. The holes are 1/4"-5/16". Can someone suggest a type, and tell me where to find such an animal. I prefer some that are low profile, chrome or non-chrome; it dosen't matter. And as always, thank you.
  2. I picked up an old 78 Honda CB400 TII Hawk that was in really good condition for a friend of mine that has never ridden before. After I got my VR he went out and got his MC lisence so he could ride too. There is no way I am gonna let a greenhorn ride my VR, so I've been keeping an eye out for a good first bike for him to get used to before getting a real bike. Anyhow, I got this CB400 from a classmate for free. He said it would still start but ran like crap. He had it for a lot of year and could never let it just go to the boneyard. Ya, it would start, but only would run on the 2nd cylinder. I pulled the plugs and the first thing I saw was splitfire plugs:bang head:. First thought was a hole burnt in the piston. Stuck my thumb over the plug hole and started it up. No compression! Got a flashlight out and turned the piston to TDC. The hole is about an inch or so big. I've seen way to many vehicles come into my shop that had some sort of severe problems due to some fancy type of sparkplugs. Now that I've made this short story really long, anybody know where to get old Honda parts at a reasonable price:confused24:?
  3. How does an first gen act when there is a hole in the carb diaphragms? Would that cause it to run lean?
  4. I recently have purchased R/K mufflers and after asking some questions on this site and getting some great feedback I decided to put them on the bike to listen to how they sound. They are a much deeper tone than the stock mufflers however they are also quieter than the stock because the stock ones have had work done to them. I love the deep exhaust note that I get with the R/K mufflers but would like them to be much louder. Is there a way to remove some baffles without hurting the cans. As of now you can look down through the center of the mufflers with about a 1 to 1-1/2 inch hole straight through. However (what I am assuming are baffles) are around the hole and deadening the sound. Has anyone ever removed some or most of these successfully or will I create problems in the pipes or on the bike from this??? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Big Mike
  5. In my quest for the (cheapest) right part I am needing to know the answer to one of two questions. 1. The place to get the cheapest replacement battery for the Venture First gen with hole for the battery sensor. 2. Best battery for the money and a way to bypass the sensor so it does not keep blinking at me. Any ideas?
  6. Hello, Im a new member with no more hot foot. First off, I'd like to thank ventureriders.org. I thought I would share my experience with you of my '06 RSTD. It's very disappointing when the temp. rises above 75+ degrees off the engine. I've heard other members complain about the heat. I have no problem with my right side, but the left side of my bike is bad. And I also noticed that when the fan comes on at a stop, the heat blows down on my left foot. The same thing happens down the road and it makes matters worse. To solve this problem, I thought I would install a small heat shield and see if this helps. This all was before I installed lower vents and kuryakyn foot pegs. So I decided to make a small heat shield out of stainless steel, its very light and easy to bend. First off, I pulled off the rubber foot pad and then cut it to the length of 8 inches long, and then bent it to a 90 degree angle on one side. I made it 4.5'' tall in the front, 3.5'' in the rear. It gives it a nice taper. Then I put a radius on each corner at the top. The easy way to find a center hole, take a little grease, put a dab in the center of the bolt head. Now you can set it in place, lean it towards the bolt head, and there's where to drill your pilot hole. Make the hole just large enough to fit over the groove on the linkage. If you need to, you can tweak your bend so it leans tight against the linkage. Now you can put the pad back on, and tuck it in against the shield, holding it secure. This seems to work out great for me when its warm out. Give it a try. Maybe paint it, or a different metal, or whatever works best for you. Now you can take it in, or out, whether its cold or warm outside, or for just cleaning matters. I hope this helps fellow members out. Here are some photos to explain better....(View attachments) Born trucker - Born biker Love to Drive - Live to Ride
  7. Man I thought I was bad....:rotf:I just checked the stat on the front page and there's 62 people in the waterin hole! Of course ..at this hour the question is: Are you up early or like me are you still at it from friday?
  8. Need some help here guys if you would...I have read all of the post on lowering the bag rails to make the "LINE" a little more eye appealing....I have checked the Venturers.org site...Drill new hole....yes...no.... Another was no new hole..but use existing hole that is their and drill one new hole in the rail?? I was wondering if some of you experts on this might look and the rails now and tell me if they can be lowered as much as an inch...they way I measure it... please look here: http://picasaweb.google.com/gharbourjr/2006RoyalStarVenture/photo?authkey=2CE6TTT04BI#5178871605343716242 Any input would be appreciated... Thank you in advance for your time.. George In Virginia...
  9. Just did a quick fix for my side panel on my 1989 Venture. Thought I would share in case others need the info. Forgive the first picture as it turned out just a little fuzzy, but it is a picture of the original tab. Picture 2 is the tab after the fix. Basically, the tab broke off right at the base, so I cut a little of the tip off, and drilled a hole straight through. Used a 1 inch 6x32 round headed screw with a washer and nut and loctite. Hope it helps someone.
  10. I have some lights that I am thinking of mounting on the front of the fairing as passing lights I really don't like the look of the bar for a passing light set up and don't want to mount of the deflectors or forks if I can avoid it. I am thinking of doing the following Mounting about 6 to 8 inches outside of headlight centered on the center horizontal plane of the headlight. Drilling necessary hole in fairing with rubber grommet for the hole. Making a small (about 2" x 2") metal plate with matching rubber plate side drilling hole in plates slightly smaller than hole in fairing. Mounting bolt for light through fairing, rubber plate, metal plate, lock washer and nut. Taping into the headlight wiring Thoughts, suggestions, hints cautions???
  11. Just about everyone thinks the stock mounting for the Yamahaha saddlebag chrome trim rails is poorly done. Not only do the rails slant upward from front to rear, which makes them not match the lines of the bags, but they almost always rub on the bottom of the turn signals. There are a couple of easy fixes for this. Others have advocated drilling a new mounting hole in the bike trim below the stock one with the welded nut behind it, thus lowering the rear of the rails. This works just fine, but for some reason I didn't want to drill a new hole in the bike. So I tried an alternative - I just drilled new holes in the upper corners of the rails themselves, next to the original mounting hole. This does not lower the rail quite a much as you probably would if you drilled the new hole in the bike instead, but I think it is good. Here are a couple of pictures to show how they look when mounted this way. Sorry for the poor quality - took them with my cell phone instead of finding the good camera! Goose
  12. When I had the fairing off fixing broken areas I found that the CB/Air ride panel mount system was broken. What I am trying to describe is on the underneath side of the panel there are 6 supports that the mounting screws go thru. These supports were broken or cracked and would not support the panel properly. I went to a local lumber chain store and got a 3/4" dowel rod. I then drilled a hole about 2" deep centered on the end. Then I cut 6 pieces 5/16" long. Now I had 6 individual pieces 5/16" long with a hole thru the center. The 2 that are at the rear of the panel will have to have one side trimmed off because the panel narrows at that end and 3/4" is to wide to fit. Then I used a product called Automotive Amazing Goop which can be bought at Walmart for $3 and change to glue the wood pieces to the underneath side of the panel. Don H.
  13. And thought..... what better place to post it than in the 'Watering Hole'. [ame=http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4742152468547080205&q=hydro+power&total=271&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=5]WATER[/ame]
  14. 91 Venture Royale, 43,000 miles. When I ride all day in hot weather, the next morning I have a little bit of coolant on my right exhaust just below the water pump. It burns off when I start up and the loss is negligable. Still It bugs me. I thought it was the o-rings in the plastic transfer pipe between the water pump and the thermostat housing. But, today I got down and looked and there is a little hole in the bottom of the water pump and there is a stain, as though coolant has leaked out the hole from time to time. This is the only place that looks like anything has leaked in the past. Anyone have a similar experience? Do I need to fix it?
  15. Okay, here's a couple trivia questions for all you geniuses. For the answers, look way down at the bottom of this post. 1. How many old T shirts does it take to soak up 3 quarts of brand new motor oil from your nice clean garage floor? 2. When changing oil in your bike (well, at least if it's a 1994 Goldwing), if you don't replace the drain plug before starting to add new oil, will the oil run out of the drain hole: a.) faster than you can pour it into the fill hole b.) at the same speed as you pour it into the fill hole c.) no one really knows because you're so busy looking for old T shirts laying around the garage that you can't tell how fast it's coming out. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ANSWERS: 1.) Exactly 6. Well, maybe not exactly 6 but that's all I could find. So, I guess it coulda been 8. Maybe even 10. 2.) You should be able to guess the answer to this one. Disclaimer: these questions are only valid for the GL1500 Goldwing. And maybe only for the 1994 models. And possibly only if you are using Castrol 20w-50.....other oils may vary. Now we need a volunteer to try this on the Venture and see if the results are similar. Probably should have a volunteer for the 1st Gen 1200cc, the 1st Gen 1300cc, and the 2nd Gen. Oh, if anyone with a RSTD would like to join in the fun, have at it!!!
  16. at least a misdemeanor, to charge a man $14.00, for a haircut with a hole in the top!!!!!!! . just jt
  17. This evening I made some trunk bolts . I took the equivalent sized hexed bolts and drilled a hole in the head . Then placed a split ring (key ring) and placed it into the hole for a handle like knob .It cost me about $7.00 to make . Got all the materials at Lowes . Gene
  18. My front fender has a hole in the very front of it. I figure there was a chrome piece mounted there that used a mount in the very front. Anyone have this or know exactly which one it was? I'd like to get on and cover the hole. This is not the hole that the factory chrome sits in and is bolted on the sides. The hole is just above the factory chrome piece.
  19. I have my bag rails and front fender rails coming in on Friday and wanted to install this weekend...If anyone has done this, is there something to the install that I might need to know that would make it easier....I know I have to drill a hole in the front fender and if I want to lower the bag rails in the rear another hole will need to be drilled in the back (venturers.org site). Any tricks, shortcuts, tools that make this easier please reply.. George in Virginia:feedback:
  20. OK, it's just like anything I work on. Carbs rebuilt, synched, new plugs, wires coming from Buckeye Performance, tires, stator, factory radio. NOW it's the water pump!!!!!!! Please give me an idea of the parts needed. It just started seeping from the weep hole, so I know the seals about gone. Recommendations, PLEASE!!!!!! Hopefully not a complete unit, over 200 bucks!!!!!
  21. Anyboby on this board sell this kind of stuff? You can email me directly at ...LRAYVICK@cox.net. I think one site I checked had them for maybe $6.50 plus shipping. I also may need a few other items. I also posted this on the watering hole.
  22. I found that a 1984-1997 toyota corrolla Car Quest PT# 60928 made by stant works as a replacement thermostat $12.90 is alot cheaper than the $45.00 the dealer wants:cool10: .I made the jiggler pin on it by drilling an 1/8 hole in it and installing a pop rivet shaft that was removed from the rivet unpopped cut it about 1/4 in. leaving the bulb on it stick it in the hole and swage the end over with a punch. or you probably could just install it the way it is but I chose to make it like the factory one. It works great!
  23. For those of you that just can not seem to let go of a couple of hundred bucks to replace your diaphragms, even though you know they need it, there is an alternative. Over the years I have tried several things to fix the existing pin holes to get me through one more season of riding. I have tried Yamabond, Seals All, silicon and maybe even something else. Last year I bought a set of carbs off ebay and even though the diaphragms did have some pins holes in them, they had been unmolested. I had heard from someone on here about a product called Liquid Tape. Well, as an update of about a year later, I want to say that it works very well. I took my carbs apart and in particular looked at the diaphragms that I patched last year and they looked very good. There was only one small hole that I needed to repair and either it was new, or I missed it last year. The great thing was the Liquid tape was still sticking real good and was still very pliable, much more than a little bit of Yamabond. I believe the trick to it is to make sure you get the hole area prepared before putting the Liquid Tape on. What I do is spray the area with brake cleaner and then clean it good with alcohol. After blowing it off a bit with compressed air, I will smear a little Liquid Tape over the area where the hole is. Then I will let it dry over night before I put it back together. I have seen Liquid Tape available at several places, but I originally bought mine at a NAPA store. It is made to be put over wires or connections to seal them. It also must have some pretty good resistance to gasoline. For those of you that want to get a little more life from your diaphragms and make your bike run better and get better gas mileage, this will sure help. RandyA
  24. I installed The new JMCB-2003 CB this weekend. when purchasing the unit i ordered the yamaha mounting kit. the kit is for the star bikes. you remove the left mirror and bolt the mount in its place the the mount and cb mount to the rear of the bolt and the mirror bolt into a hole in the cb mount plate. well this doesnt work with the 1st gen as the clutch resovoir is a bit higher then the bolt on our bike that has no mirror in it. the bolt is used to hold the stereo control switch box. this also was an obstacle. wha i did was remove the switch from it mouning tab by the 2 small scres on the backside. I then turned the mount over so the switch was down rather then above the mounting bolt. tropuble wasa now due to the angle of the metal piece and the switch box when mounting the cb down tight over the stereo switch it pushed down on the switch and cause trouble with the switch operation. So i removed the stereo switch and drilled a new hole so it mounted about a 1/4" lower. installed the cb and all fit well now. I then removed the stock antenna and installed a Firefly cb antenna with fold down mount from http://www.walcottcb.com/ I wanted to keep the single antenna so i added a splitter in the cable so the antenna works for bolth cb and stereo. I suppose the splitter take away from the cb power but im just looking for communication for group riding. not long distance talking. with the stereo input tapped into the stereo speakers the music from my stereo and Ipod with fm modulator is heard in my headset along with the cb. they also have a way to connect cell phone and gps if you like. in the first photo you can see a hole in the front of the cb on the chrome mount the is the hole they say to use to mount it but i used the hole in the back that for the mirror instead because othe the resevoir being higher on the 1st gen. you can also see the new lower stereo controls position.
  25. Knowing that you are a compasionate group, I just wanted to let eveyone know that my wife and I lost our best friend today, our Golden Retriever. We had to put Tucker down this morning due to hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the blood vessels. His passing has left a huge hole in our hearts. He made us smile and laugh for 9 1/2 years. He was a good dog and a good friend. He will be missed. Dennis
