  1. Ok, before I decided to fix my original tank, I took RandyR up on his offer to sell a gas tank to me. only caveat is that it is a black tank. I just set it on the frame and took some pics, I kind of like it. opinions anyone?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ solution B is that Jus Monkeying Around member was a big factor in fixing my original tank and that I should have it painted. He offered to pick up supplies and help me do the repair. Well at the Houston Maint Day, we did just that. We fixed the hole and another Hal is going to paint it. I will post that later as it comes along.
  2. ok im looking for a thread or advice on how to remove the fairing left and right side to repair some cracks. or a how to thread? looks like im going to have to do a small drill hole to stop a crack from spreading. and not sure on how to do that?
  3. I just installed a zumo 660 on my 04 Venture. I up graded from a 450. I still have the fairing split but should have it back on tomorrow night. I drilled a 1" hole to the left of the left hand speaker "right hand as you are looking from the front towards the back of the bike" with a wood drill bit to run the cables through. Simple and up high and there is plenty of room. I will send a picture of the hole in a little bit. What I wanted to share was that I took Squidley's advice from his "Installing an Aux line splitter" and went to Radio Shack and bought the cables he mentions in his article. I can now hear the Garmin through the head sets. The install was cheap and easy. Thanks again Squid for a job well done. P.S. The picture did not turn out. Sorry.
  4. Is it redundant to carry an emergency plug repair kit after putting "Ride On" in your tires???...because wouldn't any hole that Ride On isn't able to stop be too big for a plug to repair? Or would the Ride On in the tires prevent a plug from sealing the hole? Just wondering.
  5. I have a 1983 venture on one of the carbs a lot of gas comes out of jet needle hole can some one tell me how to stop this
  6. Has anyone felt their rear differential after a ride to see how hot it gets. I've never really paid attention to mine in my Millenium. I see that some of the older diffs have cooling fins on them, but the newer ones don't. My issue: I put a 2008 Venture rear (the whole pumpkin - after machining the hole in the boss for the shock and plugging the speedo sensor hole) into my 1998 VMax to lower the rpms. Seems to work well and I like the 500 or so lower rpms at highway speed. Gas mileage is better too. But the diff seems to get pretty doggone hot to the touch after a ride. Now I know that I live in the south and it has been really hot lately. But I've had this bike since '99 and I didn't notice that heat with the original set-up. Could have been hot too, just never boticed it. I hear no cracking or creaking going on back there. Do you think I have something discombobulated? Any ideas?
  7. While wiring in the isolator circuit for my trailer wiring harness, I came across this rubber hose.... it's to the right (throttle side) of the battery, up against the inside of the frame. The one end can be pulled out to expose a small hole (as seen in the second photo). It looks like the other end attaches to the housing around the rear shock. I'm sure one -- or many -- of the experts here can educate me as to what this is? Thanks, in adavance.
  8. well he is doing better. got him on solid heart health diet. wanted to tell big tom he can have sherbert but not ice cream for now. wanted to say thanks to squid for the call, sorry he cant call back something to do with the heart monitor system in the hallways will give false signal if a cell phone is used in the rooms? wanted to say we got a full exhaust system for the bike. right muffler has a small rust hole but he dont need the mufflers anyways. pluse if he did need it his extension tip will go over that rust hole??? with some sweet talking to this shop owner. we will get it out end of july .this man went from jerk to nice when he saw my aunt?? they went to school together way back when. i teased her and said hey go out with the jerk a couple times and he might lower the cost to get oldgoats bike out. for some reason she said she aint going there??? confessed to me she likes james aka oldgoat??? hmmmmmmm????? maybe some match making here then instead of calling him the dad i never had. i could call him uncle?? uncle oldgoat has a nice ring to it:rotfl: and my aunt can keep him in the barn if ya know what i mean? after he gets better. looks like a meet and eat i can set up with them.
  9. Hey guys- This may have been done. Did a search and didn't see it... so here goes: I wanted an extra 12v outlet on the right of the fairing, because sometimes I want to charge my phone as well as have the GPS (who has a grumpy battery) running.(new GPS has a special cord, so I can't use my USB double charger anymore.) I also removed the casette deck, and made a little storage area. I had a wire coming out of there, and then out from under the fairing... but when I didn't have something plugged in, I didn't like the cable hanging out. So I tried adding a new, easy to change aux plug in case this one fails over time. Started with a black rubber coupling from radioshack, but it didn't work. Use the gold one you see in the pics. it's worth the extra 3 bucks. This was just an experiment, but seems to have worked perfectly and gave me just what I wanted. First, drilled a hole in my beautiful fairing. I drilled too small, and slowly filed the hole more until it had a nice snug fit. However, the final solution would probably work with a hole slightly larger because I came up with a good solution for holding the plug in and waterproofing the opening. I drilled right behind the speaker, so that the plug is facing down when installed. This should eliminate almost all chances of water getting in there: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7390.jpg Then, I put an e-clip around the coupler with a neoprene washer, and put it in the hole from the bottom. If you look close in this pic, you can see both parts. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7403.jpg Next, in the inside, I used another washer, and then a bushing to help me get the e-clip on nice and tight. I was using the grooves in the knurled texture of the coupling as a groove for the clips. I think these were 1/2 inch e-clips... but I brought the coupler in and just figured it out in the hardware store. They have to fit tight. The bushing helped make it easier to put the inside e-clip on with pliers because I had space between the fairing wall and the clip's groove. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7399.jpg Next, I just used a small patch cord to plug in to the aux input of the bike to the coupler. DONE!!!! http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7404.jpg Here's how it looks from the bottom of the bike. I really like it because you can't see it unless you kind of squat down and look up. Very inconspicuous. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7400.jpg Since I was there, I looked at this 12v outlet I got from a marine supply warehouse in town. (So I'm assuming it's "weather friendly"). I wanted to add it to the lower right fairing and just tap in to the other 12v outlet. I used a 1" Flat wood bit (the flat kind with a point, if you know what I mean) to drill a hole- but that's slightly too large since I didn't have any washers. Not a problem- it still fits, but I want to add washers to "clean up" the look and keep water from seeping in around the edges. Didn't take many pics at this point, because I just kind of did it on a whim. Here's the outlet installed on the inside: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7406.jpg And here's the front side, with the plug for aux audio supplying all the necessary "Music to mod your bike to" tunes: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7409.jpg I'm really happy with how it turned out. I didn't have a perfect size bit for the lighter outlet, but it's close enough, I can't see light around the lighter with the front of the fairing off. But I plan on installing a washer on both sides (those neoprene big washers) to seal it up and reduce jiggle. It looks great as it is, though!!! Here's a more distant shot so you can see better where the mounts fall in the fairing. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7410.jpg Oh- and here she is with an f4 windshield with vent installed: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7418.jpg This was my first pictoral little tutorial... hope I did it right!! I don't know how to lightbox the images... sorry about the new windows opening!
  10. Yesterday I decided to get out and replace a hatch port on a dinghy I have listed for sale. It came with just the ring. The screw in center disc was missing. The new port was about a 1/4" larger than the OEM ring. No problem, I have a Roto-Zip... The Zip came with a circle cutter that I've never had the chance to use, but it looked simple enough. The plan of attack was to cut a hole in a piece of plywood and then use it as a guide along with a veining bit to enlarge the hole in the dinghy. Well... let me tell you... that thing sucks. I started with a piece of ply about 4' long, and ended up screwing up the entire piece. But.... I did end up with 5 side stand discs... And I bet you thought this thread wasn't going to be motorcycle related....
  11. riding down the road everything going nice and then you hit a pot hole... no not marijuana but a real life hole in the road... deep enough that your venture takes a dive and when you recover you find out that the front of your engine hit on the way out of the hole... it busted the piece on the bottom half of the part where the oil filter goes in. Cleaned it up real good, bought an oil filter adapter so that a spin on filter would work... jb welded the area underneath but it still has a drop, drop effect to it.... not going to take the motor off and apart to replace the block, but wondering if there is some kind of kit that will fix this? relocate the oil filter maybe? I mean I can take the in and out holes where the oil filter goes and thread them and then the oil will stop leaking... I was kind of hoping others have done this and might be a sensible fix... I do understand that if I were to thread the holes that id have to be real careful about metal shavings... thanks in advance for any helpful comments...
  12. Duplication from another post on the "watering hole".
  13. I have a hole in the bottom of my left saddle bag. It is on the inside bottom edge, near the rear attachment point. (pics) I rode about 250 miles on Friday, towing a trailer. The last 75 miles were in heavy rain. Saturday night, I went to dinner and noticed a plastic piece on the garage floor. When I took off the saddle bag to wash the bike today, I found where the plastic came from. So, what can I use to reattach it? The break is quite jagged, with lots of connection surface. Maybe J-B Weld? Marine epoxy? Warranty? Then, any ideas on what caused the hole? I notice that the place of the break is unusual in that there is road grime there. Maybe some hot oil heated it, and the rain cooled it, causing the break? Help and ideas are appreciated. Dave
  14. I have received my R/S kickstand to install on my Lowered 2005 Venture. What size do I need to drill the stand hole to fit my Venture ? t/y Cb
  15. Is there any aftermarket add ons that will give me an actual fuel gauge without having to drill a hole in my tank? I hate having nothing else than the idiot light.
  16. A friend and I just bought saddlebag rails for our 2nd Gen Ventures. After installing them they were raised up in the back outside corner as most are. We could fix them by drilling holes in the saddlebag rail just outside the whole that mounts to the rear fender as was done by the previous owner on my 2000MM or I could drill a hole in the fender mount as described in the tech article on this forum. However being an old sheet metal worker I figured all I needed to do was to rotate the flattened end that mounts to the fender. If you clamp the flattened end into a vise you gently pull the the outside back end (the end you want adjusted) in the direction that you want to go. Be careful a little goes a long way. If you adjust to much you run the risk of over bending and will have to bend it back a little or I guess it would be possible to crack the chrome plating although I think you have to twist it quit a bit. Ralph and I did his and my saddlebag rails this way and moved them from just about touching the rear turn signal lights to about 1 1/2"'s from the turn signals. The great part about this is you don't have to drill a hole in anything.
  17. Where can i get the hard 90 degree hose that comes off of the water pump to the front of the bike. Got a hole in mine. Long story. Thanks Doug
  18. It is that time of year to think about lubing the speedometer on the 1st gen. It is usually worse when the weather is cool and probably when the bike has sat for awhile. Even though you don't need the type fitting in the attached thread, it does work good. Other wise, you will need to take the speedometer out of the dash and put grease down inside of where the bearing is that the cable goes into. Putting grease up into the square hole where the end of the speedometer does not work because the hole does not go all the way through. Anyway check out this thread. RandyA http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36254&highlight=speedometer+squeal
  19. I didn't see anybody else post about the big rockslide on I-70 west of Denver. The road is closed both ways. They aren't sure how long it will take to clean up and repair the bridge that now has a huge hole in it.
  20. I have done a little more research on this leak, but still dont know what the cover is called, see the pics. The first one shows the cover, and the second shows where the oil is coming from after removing the cover. I changed the valve cover gaskets a few weeks ago. It wasn't leaking until after I did this. I don't see any oil in the coolant, nor is there any coolant in the oil. Whats coming out of the hole is pure oil as near as I can tell. I'm running BelRay EXL 10-40 motorcycle oil. I don't remember the name of the coolant, but it was orange and wasn't cheap. Is it possible that I have a blockage and thats why it's leaking out of the hole? I have an air compressor and was considering blowing 30-40 psi into the hole where the oil is coming out to see if I can dislodge whatever it is. Or is this not a good idea? Any suggestions would be a help.
  21. Have a 2008 VStar1300Tourer and with a combined bike, truck/trailer to allow a return through Canada in December, accumulated 14K miles on a fun Alaska to Florida and back trip. At times a center stand would have helped. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced one that could be added with minimal modification? Although I've rode various bikes for over 45 years, this is my first belt drive machine. Managed to get a hole in the belt in the Mid-West from road debris and it was not a pleasant experience. If anyone has an antidote for that or other mechanical suggestions pertinent to this model, I sure would appreciate the advice. Thanks in advance, Peter
  22. Hello Everyone! New Gnu @ the Watering Hole......first order of business......where are the lions?? Gotta keep an eye out for them!! Seriously tho'. I had my trial subscription for abt a week and found so much to offer I felt guilty taking it for free, so dropped my $12 and became a member. Last Oct. I bought a 98 Royal Star Standard from a friend of a friend. I'd ridden before but this is my 1st big cruiser. AND I'M LOVIN IT!! She was well taken care of but ridden seldom (only 6k miles)and the owner bought another bike so this one had to go. $3K later and I was riding her home. Looking forward to getting to know and hopefully meeting/riding with some of you. Hoping for a get-to-gether in FL so I can see some of the other great rides on here in person (and steal ideas!!). Once again, Nicetameecha. AwesomePossum (a.k.a. Keith) p.s. The chatroom is verrry cool!
  23. If Bret Favre had a 1st Gen. VR, he could have pushed it forward about 6 or 7 yards in the GAPING HOLE he had directly in front of him, instead of passing that darned interception!!
  24. What do you think of the strange spiral seen in the sky over Norway this past week? Video shows it forming then disappearing from the inside like a hole opened and swallowed it up. Signs and wonders
  25. Just installed a new (only 67 miles on it) 2008 RSV differential in my 1998 VMax. I know it's popular to swap these ring and pinions back and forth between the two bikes. VMax owners want to lower rpms at freeway speeds and the Venture guys want more pull and to keep the revs up a bit. I didn't send mine off to RMS Sportmax for the gears to be swapped. The shock boss is already on the Venture differential, so it's easy to see where to drill the stepped and tapped hole (if you already have a VMax diff for a pattern. I just removed the shock mounting stud from my VMax diff., used the mic to measure all of the stud's shaft dimensions, thread size and depth, and machined me a hole and tapped the threads in the Venture housing. I installed the shock bolt and made a cover for the Venture's speedometer sensor hole. Took the bike out for a spin today and enjoyed the reduction in rpms at highway speed. Even though these engines don't really vibrate around 70-75mph, riding the VMax in that range now seems to be kinda relaxing. I think the rpms dropped about 500 or so, but am not sure. I can't really remember, but I think it used to turn 4000 at 65 mph and now turns about 4000 rpms at 75 mph. I may just drill a speedo sensor hole in the VMax diff and install that on my RSV just to see how the bike likes the lower gearing. That kinda stuff is what happens when my wife is remodeling the kitchen and I'm staying out of her way. I just pay the bills and head to the garage to "tinker a bit". Oh well, these are the kind of posts you get from me when I'm bored on nightshift. Rusty
