  1. I know with all the knowledge here that someone can explain this for me. I have a utility trailer I want to modify to pull with my scoot and wanted to know if a swivel hitch is necessary or can I pull with just the standard hitch and ball. It seems that with the trailer on the ball there is enough side to side movement that a swivel is unnecessary but the idea seems right. Any takers? Wayne
  2. has anyone seen or used this hitch before. It look like it might work. http://i4.ebayimg.com/07/i/001/0b/55/fa3d_1.JPG http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/s.gif http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/s.gifhttp://i4.ebayimg.com/07/i/001/0b/55/fa3d_0.JPGhttp://i1.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/de/c3/9982_0.JPGhttp://i24.ebayimg.com/04/i/001/0b/55/fc34_0.JPGhttp://i2.ebayimg.com/04/i/001/0b/55/fe1d_0.JPGhttp://i16.ebayimg.com/01/i/001/0b/56/0026_0.JPGhttp://i4.ebayimg.com/02/i/001/0b/56/025b_0.JPG Introducing the new "Lean- Machine" swivel ball hitch for your motorcycle trailer.Brand new never seen before swivel ball hitch. Ball size is 1 7/8. Mount this ball directly on your hitch to allow the same feature you would get from the swivel coupler at a third of the price. The design allows you to use it on more than 1 trailer or let a friend borrow it. The swivel coupler you cannot remove from your trailer. The ball pivots left to right. The unit mounts just like a standard trailer ball. The same way a standard trailer ball does not spin around when you tighten it down, the same with the swivel ball hitch when you tighten the bolt the unit will not spin around. The term swivel may be misleading. I guess the better word would be pivot. The ball is the only part that pivots left to right. The ball does not swivel around, only pivots left to right. I get asked what keeps the ball from flipping left to right while in use in tow. The trailer controls the ball from involuntarily movement. The only way the ball would flop to the right is if your trailer went up on one wheel to the right. Which is almost impossible. The ball is neutral in tow. When your making a right turn, the ball actually does not tilt, your bike does. The ball remains upright at all times, but it allows your bike to lean to the left or right making it alot easier going into turns. George C
  3. What should I buy/not buy?? I will do the steering setup and am considering a 2 tone paint job. Also want the wheel upgrade. What about the hitch? I already have a Diamond R o n the bike. What about leveling links and lowering kit?? Questions, questions...
  4. I have a new 08 Venture and I,m locating some extras like arm rest passenger pegs trailer hitch... But is there asit Ican get a wire harness for pluging a trailer into RonaldE:Venture:
  5. Driving my trailer across the US and Canada has gotten a lot of attention from people everywhere. One the questions I am always asked is "How does she pull?" My response has always been: "I do not even know she is back there!" That proved true yesterday evening! We where 2 miles from our exit for the evening when my girlfriend pounded me on the back "The trailer has come off" I look in my mirror and sure enough the trailer is sliding down US 101 Pacific Hiway and no longer being towed by mau! I never felt the trailer come off the hitch and if my girlfriend had not heard it come off we would just keep on going. We pulled off the side of the highway and watched as the trailer continued to slide first down the road, then onto the shoulder, and then off into the ravine! I am sitting there wondering what happened? and why didn't the safety chains kick in? and thank God no one is hurt! I ventured down into the ravine to the overturned trailer. Our gear was scattered here and there but the trailer was intact. Upon inspection I saw that the alltread of the hitch ball had come undone. That explained what happened. Looking closer I saw that the bracket which the safety chains were attached to was secured to the all thread. When that came off so did the safety chain bracket. In retrospect I am really glad that happened! I had a clothes line which I attached to my bike and used to body reppel into the ravine to retrieve most of our gear! Unfortunately The clothes line was not strong enough to haul the trailer up out of the ravine. It was funny but I was not really concerned. I mean, it was just stuff, no one was hurt. In situations like this I really put a lot of trust in God! Sure enough within a half hour a man named Jim stops to help. Jim owns a Kal Vulcan. He does not have a rope but he does call someone who does. That turns out to be Dennis and his son, Russ, show up and they have a hoist. Very soon after the trailer is back on the shoulder. I have no way of reattaching her to the bike but no biggy. Dennis and Russ have a 1 7/8" ball hitch on their 4 wheeler, just no tools. They go get tools return and help me install the ball. They both, of course, are bike riders to. Will not accept payment! By then two hours have elapsed! CHIP has shown up, another bike rider has shown up and everyone is helping. The trailer has minor damage at best, scractes and one hinge is partly damaged, and I have gotten into some poison oak. God really does love me. We are back on the road continuing our journey through out the US!
  6. just got done putting the hitch on my wing. now i have two bikes with hitches and still no wire looms. they are on order but not on the way. may have to look locally. i think the worst part is out of the way.
  7. hey folks, last fall I bought a trailer hitch for my 06 Venture and I seem to have misplaced the stinger (the part the ball attaches to).. I'm trying to figure out if I had actually ordered that part with the hitch as I am really unable to find the elusive item in my home or shop.. Ever have that special place you 'store things so you'll remember where they are'? Well where mine is, its full of these parts.. grr.. All I can remember is that when I purchased the hitch, I also received the 3 flag pole holder that fits into the hitch where the stinger goes.. but I can't find the stinger.. The hitch LOOKS like a Venturedad one but his site doesn't list the 3 flag pole holder.. Does this ring a bell with anyone who might recognize the hitch as I've described it? it would help me locate records to see if I actually ordered the stinger or not and whether I'm wasting my time searching for something that I never had in the first place lol.. My memory is getting so bad lately, I might be old enough for a GoldWing! But I'd probably forget where I parked it..
  8. got my new hitch installed on my v-star this morning, sand blaster called and my trailer frame is ready to paint. la pryor called the other night. got to get him fixed, and we will be ready to head for vogel. by the way everyone say a little prayer for la, he's going to the doc monday. i am praying that the news is good. hopefully some rest and medication will fix him up. sounds like he has what i've been fighting for the last four years. not to mention we are a couple of old farts. la said he will be at the 09 rally if he has to cage it. we got a campsite reserved at vogel. got to get some of ecks free coffee. god willing we will be there. bill ps. can't even tell that new hitch is back there. :rotf:
  9. latest update on my trailer and a few questions. got my harbor freight trailer with 12" wheels. narrowed the frame to 18 1/2", and shortened it 3 1/2". i welded the frame together instead of bolting. the frame is at the sandblaster. i bought a neat plastic locking box at lowes and my cooler will go on the front. going to take one leaf out of the springs, and mount the axle on top of the springs to lower it. it should work out great and will look factory made. just ordered a hitch for my v-star 1300. so far i think the whole job less hitch will be about $350.00. now the questions, since i have never pulled a trailer. do i need safety chains? any worry pulling in the rain? will the hitch coupler tilt enough so it won't bind on the side stand or in the curves? what air pressure should i run in the 480 12 tires? any other conditions that i have to worry about. pics will follow when i get it done. bill
  10. CAUTION: HIGH RESOLUTION PICS. (I'VE DISCOVERED THE BEST WAY TO VIEW THESE PICS IS TO RIGHT-CLICK THE PICS, ONE AT A TIME, AND "OPEN LINK IN NEW TAB". VIEW THE PIC, CLOSE THE WINDOW, AND REPEAT FOR EACH PIC) Obviously before connecting up the trailer I mentioned above, I had to have a hitch since this bike came to me without one. I looked over the units available online and decided that their ideas were basically sound but I wanted to build mine as a receiver hitch to begin with, and wanted to save some cash as well. I removed the crossover bar behind the rear tire and measured it for width inside the attach flanges: 9” http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i140/Dave_Danger/Bike/Hitch%20Assembly/?action=view&current=DSC04028.jpg I then purchased a 1 1/4" receiver hitch tube from a local automotive hitch dealer and cut it to the length that would place the receiver as close to the rear fender as possible. I then drilled a 7/8" hole thru the receiver tube from side-to-side, with the edge of the hole flush with the fwd (tire end) of the tube, then cut that hole open like a slot. I then began with a 9" x 9" piece of 3/16" thick steel plate, and cut all corners on a 45 degree angle, and folded the front edge (tire edge) 90 degrees straight up, and drilled a 3/4" hole in both aft corners for safety chains. http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i140/Dave_Danger/Bike/Hitch%20Assembly/?action=view&current=DSC04030.jpg http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i140/Dave_Danger/Bike/Hitch%20Assembly/?action=view&current=DSC04039.jpg http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i140/Dave_Danger/Bike/Hitch%20Assembly/?action=view&current=DSC04041.jpg I then clamped all the pieces together tightly and welded all joins in a series of 3/4" stitch beads. http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i140/Dave_Danger/Bike/Hitch%20Assembly/?action=view&current=DSC04046.jpg Reinstalled the whole assembly to the bike and slipped in a 1 7/8" ball mount that I had left over from a previous vehicle... oila! Really slick, nearly hidden receiver hitch. http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i140/Dave_Danger/Bike/Hitch%20Assembly/?action=view&current=DSC04053.jpg http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i140/Dave_Danger/Bike/Hitch%20Assembly/?action=view&current=DSC04049.jpg I have about $50.00 worth of materials and outside machine shop work in it. Not counting my design, fitting and welding time.
  11. Decided to take a week off and take my little guy Josh to the beach. This is my first official trip on my new to me kawasaki voyager that I bought from wanderer.I ordered the hitch and the modulite and had them before I picked up the bike so I guess that would be my first mod on the bike.Took a few pics enjoy!
  12. Okay Guys, I value everyone"s opinion here on this site! I want to buy a trailer hitch for my 07 Venture, I need some recomendations. I'm going to be pulling a small trailer, about the size of a Harbor Frieght with a Sears Cargo Top on it. I plan on doing both back road and highway driving with it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Mud season is almost over and the bikes will be coming out of the barn soon!!! Thanks Josh
  13. This will sound very silly to some but I'm shaking off the winter dust from my winter purchases and ready to install a lot of them onto my 2006 RSV but for the most part, I either can't remember where I stored the dang stuff or misplaced the installation paperwork.. I need my own storage space lol I bought a trailer hitch assembly for my bike and can't find the installation paper work.. I can't even remember the brand name so that I could download it from their site. I'm wondering if anyone recognizes this description and could point me to their website.. The hitch is not from DiamondR.. The hitch comes with an optional 3 post flag mast attachment. Does this brand ring a bell with anyone?
  14. Guys - This year we want to go to the Grand Canyon in our Z71 and pull our Travel trailer. Problem is, I also want to take the Venture. The only way I see I can do it is by using this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motorcycle-Trailer-Lift-Hauler-Carrier-Mighty-Hauler_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1171Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1308Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a2Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem3ef4148b42QQitemZ270382959426QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1624wt_385 or one like it. I'm told by the mfg. that my hitch needs to be a class 4, I have a Chevy factory hitch and it's most likely a class 3. I don't mind buying a new hitch but was wondering if anybody here has had to deal with this situation. Thanks for any HELP
  15. I KNOW SOMEBODY OUT THERE HAS A TOW HITCH THAT IS JUST SITTING IN THE GARAGE COLLECTING DUST,MY 83 WONT BE COMPLETE UNTIL IT HAS ONE,IF YOU HAVE ONE I SURE COULD USE IT! THANX!!!!!!!
  16. I have a markland trailer hitch off an 83 venture that i will sell for fifty dollars plus freight which i estimate at 15 to 20 dollars more. Just drop me an email and we can work something out. I can do paypal, money order or wait for your check to clear. I don't know what other years it will fit. I thought i'd give you folks a chance before listing it on ebay. ALSO I HAVE A COMPLETE SET OF USED ROTORS THAT I'LL SELL FOR THE SAME PRICE PLUS SHIPPING. Ron
  17. Does anyone know where i can buy a hitch for my 87 venture ??
  18. i've seen a few posts here talking about trailer hitch mounted racks. my question is, what kind of weights would you recommend limiting it to, and if anyone has built their own hitch, any caveats? i'm in college right now, and am taking alot of welding classes. I feel pretty confident about being able to fab a rack and trailer hitch up, but obviously, not having done it before, any tips would be hugged and loved and called george. I would like to make it out of aluminium, mostly to hold camping gear (cooler, tent, mostly light stuff) but i haven't priced out and cleared with the soon to be boss ( getting married on the 30th of may ) on what sort of welder is acceptable. I might have to settle for mild steel. thanks in advance, guys!
  19. I just purchased a Vertical Hide a Hitch from Diamond R Accessories and installed it in 20 minutes flat. This was the slickest installation ever. I was some what nervous because it was being shipped over the border. Everything went as smooth as silk and dealing with Allen & Patti was a treat. I would order again from them in a second. Thank you for the service. Diamond R Accessories
  20. I Have an 85 G1 and have purchased a hitch from ebay for what I thought was a reasonable price. BUT its only reasonable if it fits. I dont want to pull a trailer with it, but i do want to add a cooler rack from Rivco. Can someone have a look and tell if this will work or not as I dont have the rear bumper light bar on my bike. I think I may have to add a couple of stabilizing bars from the hitch up to the frame of the bike behind the side bags. Hers the link http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270324374389 Thanks in advance for the input! Brian oops!!! sorry the link doesnt work i will hafta take a new pic and repost!
  21. For anyone that has been wondering how the Diamond R Hidden Trailer Hitch looks and ease of install here it is..Remove 4 bolts that hold cross bar under rear fender,Remove the bar and reinstall the New bar that is the hitch and bolt it back together per the SIMPLE enclosed direction,( Reuse two of the bolts taken off and use the two NEW bolts supplied.) It is that simple and looks great. Seems to be VERY strong. Tom (Pics Attched)
  22. I've given up on buying a hitch assembly for an 83. a buddy that has a full service shop says he can build me one if I can get photos of a hitch off the bike and or measurements and photos on a bike. Anyone able to help me? He will havethe bike at his shop to measure, but would like a starting idea as to waht they look like, how high they are mounted, etc....
  23. I was told that the hitch will add about 6" to the lencth of the toungue Did anybody cut it back or is longer better? Also, Am I opening a can of worms asking it this way?
  24. Hi gang, I forgot what the ball size was on the Venturedad Hitch does anybody know what the size is? 1-7/8 ? I have sold mine and am having a differant type installed to my trike and wanted to email them to see if the ball came with it and what size it was... I tow a piggy . Thanks, Jeff
  25. If anyone out there is using "Al's Cooler Rack"...(see link below) http://www.alsmotorcycleaccessories.com/new_cooler_rack.html with their 2nd gen RSV, can you please tell me the specific trailer hitch you're using with it?
