  1. More coming our way:bang head:............
  2. my 01 rsv that i bought a month ago came with a short windshield, not usre how tall it is but probably the shortest one they make, too short for me i get a lot of head buffeting. but I don't want one so tall I can't see over it. do they make one 2 or 3 inches shorter than oem. any suggestions would be appreciated.
  3. A beautiful afternoon, uncovered my VR all set to ride it to work ..........and what do I get but a dead cylinder. So now I get to work on my bike instead of riding it.
  4. I need to remove one of the coolant joints in the cylinder head, because it is leaking and the O-rings have to be replaced. The joint is held in by a spring pin, and access is very tight. The part itself is plastic and doesn't seem to want to move. Before I resort to breaking this part out, with all the risk that entails, does anyone have a method of removing this that has worked for them? Thanks.
  5. Actually, I kinda know where I am going, but thinking there might be something along the road that most people don't know about. My route... Leave Searcy, AR tomorrow morning and head up to Branson, MO to eat a BURGER and FRIES at Billy Bob's Dairyland on Hwy 76. From there, I'll ride another 30 minutes to Kimberling City to spend the night. The real journey starts at Paris Springs, MO (Gary's Sinclair on Route 66), and heading east. So anything unusual from there up to Cuba, MO which is where I am spending the night on Monday night (and eating at the Missouri Hick and staying at the Wagon Wheel Motel). On Tuesday...I'll head again East on Route 66 from just this side of St. Louis and then head back towards Arkansas down Hwy 67 South. So if ya know something cool to see...list it here. Thanks, Wally
  6. Deer Story - A Farmer's Tale Why we shoot deer in the wild: (A letter from someone who wants to remain anonymous, who farms, writes well and actually tried this) I had this idea that I could rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home. I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up-- 3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it, it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope, and then received an education. The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope. That deer EXPLODED. The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A deer-- no Chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined. The only upside is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals. A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope. I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual. Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in. I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder - a little trap I had set before hand...kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back. Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when ..... I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and slide off to then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head--almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts. The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective. It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds. I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose. That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day. Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp... I learned a long time ago that, when an animal -like a horse --strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape. This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a girl and tried to turn and run. The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down. Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head. I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away. So now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope......to sort of even the odds!! All these events are true so help me God.. A Educated Farmer
  7. The cover plate on side of the engine, each cylinder has one and it is held in place with a phillips head screw. The cover was loose and rattling and the screw would not turn in or out. Well the short is the head is now stripped out. Any thoughts on how to free the screw. I thought about drilling out the screw head............I'm afraid of ripping a hole in the cylinder. I believe the screw is fused to the aluminum in the block. AHHHAHHHH. joe (Saddle_Bag)
  8. OK hear my story and I'm sticking to it Back in Dec. there was a discussion about packing the bearings in the steering head. I stated that I had Installed a ZERK in my 04 RSV (as I have done in about 50 different type of bikes). Another member tried it and had a problem 05 model I think, he had put 14oz in his and it still was not coming out. I then tried putting a Zerk in the steering head of a 03 and had the same problems. I said I would find out why and this is what I found. there is a small hole about 1/8 inch in diameter and 1' below the the bearing race in the tube on the back side On my 04 it appeared to be welded from the out side from the factory. My fix was to weld up his from the in side which I did and now his also can be greased Will out pulling the bike apart. what I wanted to know is if this hole is in your bike (it can only be seen when you pack the bearings) and is it open or welded up .this is the first time I have come across something like this. I can not image that this is left open by the factory as water could get in the steering head bearings. I have no ideal why it is there except to poss let the welding gas out when manufactured The pitures are taken standing in frount of bike looking in to the steering head 1 one is of hole 2 is after repaires
  9. I have a stuck spark plug. When I say "stuck", I don't mean tight, I mean it will barely move. I am trying all the tricks to ease it out slowly. I might even be able to run the motor later for a few minutes to warm the head up. In the meantime, I am trying to work it back and forth while soaking it in PB Blaster. Questions: 1. If the tread comes out with the plug, can the rear cylinder head be removed with the engine in the frame? 2. If the engine has to come out, what is the easiest way (I have the Yamaha Manual)? 3. Any tips, other than "sell it"? Grrrr!
  10. OK guys, I have drained the differential and calculated that the refill is 300cc or 10oz (.3L per the manual). My problem is the fill plug doesn't want to come loose. It appears to be a 6mm female hex head and my allen wrench only wants to twist. I have soaked it in penetrating oil for now . . . Any ideas?
  11. had rear tire replaced and steering head bearing, after i picked it up tuesday and road it home i noticed when i swerve back and forth the roar is gone however when i let go of the handle bars it shakes worse than before.(please don't say hold on to the bars)i called the dealer and he said that they cant press the bearing in so after i put 2 or 300 miles on it bring it back and they would re torqe the bearing. to me that sounds a little funny, need some imput.
  12. I bought a new Dell Inspiron R17 w/windows 7 - really getting tired of it I'm just about ready to buy a full version of XP Pro and install. I don't care about anything except running a particular program that I just had to reload because it disappeared this morning Problem is it takes nearly 2 hours to re-load :bang head: The question is - can I load XP Pro on this Dell ?
  13. I've got my RSV on a lift to replace the fairing. While there I checked for looseness of the steering head bearings by grabbing the front end & rocking it. Never had any problems with it but thought I'd check while on the lift. I've got 40k on it. Don't see any looseness at all. So do I need to remove and retighten the nut or just leave well enough alone? Also, is there any greasing to be done? I don't see any grease around the area, but do see dirt that looks like it's glommed onto grease that's seeped out over the years...not a lot, but some. Just wondering if I need to do anything or if I should just leave it alone? Thanks for the help in advance...JR
  14. droped off the ole girl to get a new rear tire and a steering head baron, cant wait to get her back and its just in time for the bike show in greenville,sc next weekend.cant wait to see the sleeperhawks and other!!!
  15. Where would I find the listing for the head bolts in the parts fiche? 1988 1300 MKII I have looked in the Head & crankcase sections, as well as others, but I can't seem to find them. I may need to replace a few here in a few weeks, may not need to. Just trying to find a listing for them. Anybody got a recommendation on procedure to remove them from the crankcase? Normally I use Partshark.com Gary
  16. Don't shoot the messenger... Here's the story.
  17. The housewife answered a knock on the door and found a total stranger standing on the doorstep. "Excuse me for disturbing you, ma'am," he said politely, "but I pass your house every morning on my way to work, and I've noticed that every day you appear to be hitting your son on the head with a loaf of bread." "That's right." "Every day you hit him on the head with a loaf of bread, and yet this morning you were beating him with a chocolate cake." "Well, today is his birthday."
  18. I'm beginning to look for a newer 2ng gen. Have heard some 2007s had a head casting issue. Is this real and any other issues on 2005 and newer models?
  19. Just fishing for tips and tricks from any one who who Has done this. Mine is an Air Bag. I am hoping that disconecting the battery is sufficient to prevent mis hap in that area. Plan is to drop the forks tear them down install Progresive springs and reseal and re bush. In my head it is a pretty straight forward operation. I should have gotten "All Balls" for the steering head as well but it is an afterthought and with the holiday and availible time off now I will go ahead with the forks and do the steering head later.
  20. I just hate it when I have parts left over! So, I just finished repacking the steering head bearings and I'm putting everything back together and I find this 'extra' part. It's a rubber washer (of sorts) with such an odd configuration, you'd think it would be easy to figure where it belongs. I've gone through the manual and every other sort of resource I could find, but I still don't know where to put it. http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/83%20Venture%20Royale/rubberwasher.jpg The inside diameter of the washer is the same as the outside diameter of the ring nut pictured here. But, I can't see any purpose for it when installed that way. The only other possibility I can come up with is that it goes under the bearing cover on top of the upper bearing. If that's the case, I'd like to get confirmation before I button everything up. P.S. '83 Royale (if that makes any difference)
  21. this guy needs better friends that pay attention.....or more practice loading a bike...ouch! [ame=http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=7f6_1294254202]LiveLeak.com - Motorcycle Loading Fail[/ame] Brian
  22. Here is my cold weather contribution... Don't know why it showed up so blurry here. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/NewFromYamaha1.gif Took me a while to make it. Too much time on my hands. I need to get out and ride!!
  23. Hi!, My name is Larry and I live in the Bootheel of Missouri. A month ago I traded my 1300c for a 06 rsmtd. The 06 had 3300 miles on it and I consider it as close to new as you could get. It does have the loud clutch chirp, which I will deal with later. This site has been a great help in learning about the new bike (to me). I have added the Harley lic. plate bracket and lights and I have a set of RK mufflers to add. My question is: How do you save the soft gasket material that is around the head pipe? or do you just buy new if you decide to put the stock pipes back on. I will be adding more to the profile soon. And thanks for all of your help. Larry

  25. A buddy and I plan to head out on June 29 and head into Canada for a four day trip. We will cross in Windsor and take rt3 (Talbott Trail) to Niagara Falls the first day and then wing it from there. We plan to go north from the falls to a little town called McDougal, and them toward Sault St Marie where we'll cross back in to Michigan. I do hope to have time to make it the the PIE CO. in Traveres City MI. From anyone up there are there any must sees or roads to ride?
