  1. I am officially employed again, as of Monday morning. My former employer had to dramatically downsize last year, and I had worked hard at eliminating my own position as I was to be promoted to General Manager. To try to struggle through, they had to cut very deep, and unfortunately I had to go. It was a sound business decision that I would have made the same way myself - their doors are still open but they are struggling. Time will tell. Regardless, as the automotive business all over tanked last year, there were many, many supplier shops here in southern Ontario which also closed, making the job market exceptionally tight for all. I dedicated 3-4 hrs every morning to just my job search : researching companies, tracking down contacts, cold calling, etc... and now finally, after 11 long months, I am joining another progressive automotive parts manufacturer in a position that I will enjoy. I had an interview Thursday afternoon, and I had a firm offer in under 24 hours, and I start Monday. I know there are quite a few members on here looking, and all I can say is do not give up. It's hard and certainly frustrating but things do come through eventually.
  2. la just called me. he sounds great, has a great outlook on his condition, and is looking forward to riding his bike again. i'm planning on riding down for a visit when it cools off a little. can't wait to see the old fart. sure do miss him. he can't drive yet and has been in and out of the hospital. he talked to linda quite a while cuz i was having a hard time hearing him. he is in good spirits. linda and i are praying hard for his quick recovery. we love you buddy. bill
  3. My lovely 02 VENTURE has a problem (1st one ever, besides me). She runs great down the road then she just acts like she runs out of gas, pull over starts right up then does it again then hard start then repeats and would not start. Had it towed home and she starts up now. Any ideas??? Thank you in advance for your help...........................Ron
  4. Was there ever any type of soft bag designed to fit inside the hard side bags? Does anyone use something like this? If so what do you use?
  5. New Oil change and bike is still hard to shift. Neutral is hard to find. I bled it out with all new Val Sync fluid in it. Time to rebuild Slave Cylinder??
  6. I've been running AVG 9.0 free for about a month now but my Quickbooks started acting up. so in my infinite "wisdom" I figure I'd download PCSecurity shield2010, a program which I had paid for but due to repeated hard drive problems had not been re-installed (yet). So after installing this I ran a system scan; after 14-1/2 hours it still wasn't finished! Can't un install AVG; can't uninstall security shield; firefox won't open; outlook was acting up and after rebooting the ultimate insult, I can't get past the boot screen. i.e I cannot open it in safe mode. I do not want to re-format this thing AGAIN if at all possible. I figure I can take it upstairs and throw it of the front porch and put it out of it's misery, but my company files are on there so maybe someone here has a better alternative???
  7. here's a picture of the lower section of the cabinet that nearly cost me my thumb. Linda won't let me finish the top section yet ( I couldn't if I wanted to ) can't stand to use my thumb yet but I'm having a hard time not turning the saw on
  8. Well I just did the clutch upgrade on my '09 RSTD with about 1700 miles on it. Took about 2 hours altogether including cleanup and pulling the discs out after realizing I left the washer in there. Good thing I checked the excellent writeup on the site to make sure I was on the right track. All in all it was not to hard but I did worry when I got to the wire, was not sure how to get that out without breaking it. The half disc was hard to get out because it is in there so deep. Any way the clutch pull is a little harder as people have said. I think the friction zone is slightly larger but it engages later on in the travel. I think that is a function of it grabbing better. Any way time will tell. Not sure how you would be able to get that wire back in there if you were to go back to stock. David
  9. I sold the Honda 600 Shadow VLX today. I really like that bike but the insurance was unaffordable with 3 bikes ($2400 just for it). My daughter, son and wife all learnt to ride on that bike. It was hard to watch someone drive off with it. It just didn’t make sense to have it just sit in the garage for the next 3 to 4 years. The gentleman was very pleased and happy with the shape and looks of it. Funny thing, my son didn’t want me to sell it to anyone that he felt wouldn’t keep care of it. He wouldn’t sell it to two younger boys that tied to purchase it. It was his first bike and was hard for him to see it drive off into the distance.
  10. 1985 Venture has 24,000 miles and started shifting and down shifting very hard..Clutch and linkage appear to be ok.. Changed oil thinking oil breakdown but still hard to shift. Does seem to shift a little easier when it is cold that when engine is hot seems to get more difficult shifting. Would like to to get thoughts on this before I dig into transmission. Has me baffled ..
  11. I just finished synching the carbs on my '09 RSTD. It only has 400 or so miles on it. I wanted to do it to learn as well as the fact that people on the board stated that it can be off from the factory. I used the Carbtune to do it. Unfortunately I bought it from a place in California before I noticed some posts about buying it from the manufacturer to take advantage of the exchange rate. Just goes to show what a wealth of knowledge the board is and maybe post a question before making a purchase. In any case I want to thank Freebird for posting the instructions and pics on how to do this. For those that are reticent about doing something like this don't be it is so simple it is not even funny. A pox and shake of the fist to the dealers that charge $85 for this. If the Stealers were smart they would give away something like this to get you into the store to buy more farkle. Literally the hardest part of this job was getting the hose off because it was kind of stuck and it is hard to get your fingers in the small space to get a good grip. I ended up using a screwdriver blade to push the end of the hose while pulling at the same time. I think i will put a dab of boy butter (silicone grease) on the nipples to make it easier next time. The other hard part was figuring out exactly where to put the Carbtune. I have my bike in a wheel chock to keep it upright so the handle bars are straight putting near the grips made it too far away for the hoses to reach the opposite side. I happened to have the seat off so I put it in that area. I was also worried about the hoses melting if they contact the pipes but that did not seem to be an issue. Another thing about the Carbtune, at least the one I have, is that one of the rods will stick if it is not mostly vertical. That is an important check the rods will bounce when the engine is running so make sure all 4 are bouncing. I ended not taking a before shot because I am bad like that. But I did get an after. The pairs were close to each other but the sides were off a bit. Get knee pads when you do this to save your knees. The first thing I did was get my long screw driver to make sure I could reach the screws. Even though I knew where to look it was kind of hard to pick them out at first. The one that does the one side to the other was like trying to find Waldo. Anyway here is an after pic. Thanks to the guys that post info to make things like this easy to figure out. David.
  12. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-XVZ1200-1985-YAMAHA-XVZ1200-VENTURE-ROYALE-XVZ-1200-TOURING-/180525166349?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item2a08236f0d Project?? 1200's getting hard to come by.
  13. I would like to add a power supply (hard wired) off my 12 volt supply to run my 5th gen. Nano. Anybody have a clue. I have seed it on other RSV's but never asked the important questions.
  14. We made it into Nova Scotia today. In my opinion it pays to travel in the U.S. Our typical fill up in the states for the two bikes was around $20. We found a camp ground in Jonesport, Maine $15 with hydro. Typical hotel $55. In Canada, Filled up today $33, Camped last night in a provicial camp ground $38 + $16 to get into the park, tonight $110 for a room. We are enjoying ourselves, nothing better than riding down a road. We had a very friendly boarder guard the other day. I went though first and he asked me if the usual questions and then asked if I was traveling with the bike behind me. Ya, thats my wife. He said, I'll give her a hard time then, lol He told her I had said she's smuggling in heroin, she replied, he would say something like that. Then she added I've gained a few pounds while in the states, your welcome to take that back. If I could do that everyone would be coming to Canada.
  15. I have a 83 Venture and it started to shift hard and now I have a hard time getting it to shift out of 2nd gear sometimes it does and some times it don't, could this be a oil problem I just change the oil. The clutch seems to be working, it disengages and seems fine. Where do I go from here I read something about taking out the shifter rod and cleaning it. I can do all the repairs on it but I want to go to the right area for the repair. Oh and I am going on a trip next weekend maybe....lol If you could email me directly it would speed this up. Thanks Bubbadoo700@aol.com

  18. :fireman:I am looking to replace the travel trunk and possible the saddle bags on my '02 midnight venture. The bottom of the trunk is cracked around the bolt holes,I can't afford to buy the new oem trunk, does anyone know anything about A-1 motorcycled hard bags? they look pretty nice and are alot more affordable.

  20. So I just picked up an 83 venture royale and wanted to thank this site for all the info that helped me decide. Over all the bike is in great shape, the only thing that i found that is not working is the The Temp guage.74k I was a little concerned about the 2nd gear problems known in these bikes, but it is at 74k and shows no signs of problems (i ran hard through 2nd gear to see if i could get it to pop out). I have a question about the brakes they seem very weak to me, but i am coming from riding sport standard bikes, for reference it seems to stop slowly, and even applying breaks very hard there is NO way i could lock either tire. anyways here a pic, and i enjoyed my first 250mi on it yesterday. http://www.imagechicken.com/uploads/1274634469037051500.jpg
  21. Dr.'s let her out today (Friday), still find it hard to believe home and walking 2 days after a total hip replacement........... 22. Ruffy - I've only had the wind wings for 6 months or so, hard to believe it took so long to get them mounted.
  23. :dancefool:Sorry guys i know there are a ton of threads on this but man fishing through them all you end up more confused lol. Ok so i have about 78000 miles on the ol girl and the clutch has been slipping since oh about 15000 miles ago. I won a new Barnett clutch plate set and have never put them in. Should i use these or just try to replace the spring with heavier duty spring? If i use these do i need anything else along with it? Never done a clutch before but i know it is not that hard i just want to make sure i have everything to do it the day i tear it down as i hate to be with out it. New baby due next month so have to make sure i have the bike for my sanity. Thanks for the help.
  24. In the last several days I've heard a click or klak when pulling away from a stop and when starting to decelerate. It is a single klak which seems more like a knock on hard plastic than metal on metal. It does seem to come from the front but not sure where. Any suggestions where to start looking?
  25. Let's see, I replaced the carb boots and o-rings, plugged the holes for the YICS, cleaned the K&N twice and oiled (one swipe accross with the spray), pulled the diaphrams (they still look new), soaked all the holes and blew them out, and synced the carbs (not that far off) and it runs like poo. Have not driven it yet, don't trust it. It was much smoother with the YICS on unless I goofed somewhere. It even kind of backfires up into the airbox. Blip the throttle and it is somewhat slow to come to idle. Hard to keep it at 1k rpm. When I added the plugs and the think for #2, after the sync, I noticed the idle jump up a few hundred rpm. Turned the idle screw back down but hard to keep it at 1k rpm. Thinking about emptying the tank (whats left) and putting new. This and the gauges today is making me lose that lovin' feeling.
