1. Well I think I am in need of some new clutch springs, at the least. I took my scoot out today with my wife and just let her run. About 4000 rpm I could feel the clutch starting to slip, not much just a little slip, and only in 3rd gear up. Do you all agree that just a spring upgrade is all I need or do I need to think about an entire clutch altogether. Thank You. Shaun I think SkyDoc sells the clutch stuff, will have to dig around.
2. Saturday we rode down to Hammond LA to eat some crawfish, It was a spur of the moment day trip, there and back. Crawfish were good but kinda expensive. On the way back...the I noticed the normal SCREAM seemed to get louder. The closer I got to the house, it was almost unbearable...you really need ear plugs now.:puzzled::puzzled: When I got home I parked it outside the shop to let it cool off before putting it in the shed and noticed a puddle of oil about 2" round under it when I moved it into the shop. It smelled like gear oil. Got to looking...oil all over the rear wheel and tire...and some on the frame under the bike. Today I got a chance to tear it down to see what is going on...looks like it was leaking oil at the flange where the pumpkin connects to the drive shaft tube. Yep the seal on the drive shaft is toast but it was replaced not to long ago during a tire change. Pulled the pumpkin off and the cup where the drive shaft slips into seems very loose. Like maybe the outer pinion bearing is gone. It seems it has about 1/8" slack in it. I think on the drawings it is called the gear coupling. About how much slack should be in the Gear Coupling. I do not remember any slack there in the past but maybe I am wrong. I need somebody to tell me what they remember on their final drive. I already called a dealer and he said bring it...but wouldn't you know this would happen in the best time of the year to ride. HELP me out with some advice
3. My plastic gear for the odo is worn out so it wont turn the steel shaft and the odo doesen't work What to do? Find a good used speedo at ebay or can it be fixed? I was thinking something like using a glue gun and adding material to the plastic gear and try to reshape it...
4. I keep seeing "2 up" and thought it was referring to 2nd gear but not thinking so any more. Can someone explain this to me. Thank You. Shaun
5. The question has been asked a few times if there was a gear indicator available for the Royal Star Venture and the Royal Star. I have been in contact with the same company that makes the Speedohealer and they do have one that will work on our bikes. I have been 100% pleased with the Speedohealer so decided to add the gear indicator also. This is a simple plug and play device that indicates what gear you are in. I just ordered one and will give a full report on it after I receive and install it but if this is something you have been interested in, you can find the information here. They told me that we should purchase from their USA Distributor: http://www.calsportbike.com/gpx but the manufacturers website is: http://www.healtech-electronics.com/ From the info they sent to me: The GIpro X-type will work great. Part number: "GIPRO-X-color + GPX-Y01" Where 'color' is either Red or Blue Price is $132.99
6. For those few of you that have expressed any interest in the 2nd gen transmission being a viable option in a 1st gen engine, here is a great update. I received the forks and drum today and after doing some measurements on the location of the shifting slot that controls the slider for 1st and 3rd gear, it appears that Yamaha has shifted that slot approximately .080 toward the center of the engine. As noted in the earlier post, that slider was off using the 1st gen drum to the point that the dogs on 1st gear were touching the mating gear slightly and the dogs on the other side of the slider were just barely going into 3rd gear when that gear was engaged. It does appear that the forks themselves are identical. The other change is the tabs that were bent over the end of the pins, the ones that tend to open up and allow the pins to fall out, are no longer there and now it is a machined casting. This is another big improvement in this transmission. After replacing the forks and drum, I set the gearsets in place and it appears everything aligns perfectly and all sliders engage exactly as they should and have the proper clearances when not engaged. All the gears changed perfectly as I went thru the shift pattern. Now, I will gather up all the necessary seals and gaskets to start assembling this thing. I will add some pictures and the last one will be the 2nd gen gearset in place in a 1st gen engine with everything aligning as it should. RandyA
7. After setting the 2nd gen gear set in the 83 engine bottom half, I realized that there was an alignment problem. After I aligned everything, I believe that two of the three forks are exactly where they need to be. the problem is the one that controls 1st and 3rd gear. Yamaha increased the width of the teeth on that gear slide and with the slide not engaged, it made the 1st gear dogs too close and the 3rd gear dogs too far away. The next step would be to get the correct fork and see if that solved the problem. But that was a problem in itself. According to two different dealers, there was not a new fork available anywhere in the US and the only place to get one was Japan. I then went online and checked with any salvage yards and anywhere else that might have a 2nd gen engine that was being parted out. I had just about given up when my son Brian, who had just stopped by, suggested I check my paypal history in trying to find where I had bought the 2nd gen gear set . Not only did I find the purchase, which was Feb 24, 2010, but the purchase had a phone number listed. I called it and not only did I get an answer, but he told me where to look and the forks and tumbler were still available on an ebay - buy it now listing, where I rarely look. The price was $25 with about $12 for shipping and I have already purchased and paid for it. So, now I am in great anticipation on this being a viable option, not only for solving the 83/85 trans problem, but for any 1st genner that wants to upgrade their trans to the slightly wider spaced gearing that the 2nd gens have. For those interested, I will keep you upgraded on how this progresses. RandyA
8. Ok, I have started the tear down of the spare engine that I got when I bought the 85. I was told that this 83 engine had only 30,000 miles on it and after spitting the case, I really do believe it may be true. There is no doubt in my mind that the engine had never been apart since new. One of the first things I wanted to see was what the gear dogs looked like on 2nd gear. I found that they had no noticeable wear at all. That was a good sign. Now, one thing that did surprise me was that the dogs on 2nd gear appeared and measured to be slightly undercut . I knew that later year 1st gens were undercut slightly, but I had never heard the 83's were. But, I have never looked at an 83 that did not already have a problem of being worn. The second issue that does give me some concern is not only did Yamaha change the gear diameters and number of teeth, but they also changed the width of some of the gears, but it appears to be only in the gear teeth area, but not the width where it is on the shaft. In setting the gearsets beside each other, and I am actually comparing an 86 set with the 02 set, you can see the difference. So far it does look like that the gears will line up with the proper fork placement. The next step will be to put the 02 set in place and set the bottom back on with the forks in place and see if it shifts thru the gears ok and see if everything lines up. I really do hope this is a viable option for the 1st gens, not only as a 2nd gear fix, but I want to have wider spaced gear ratios like the 2nd gens have. With also adding the V-Max rearend, 1st and 2nd gear will be slightly lower, 3rd and 4th will be about the same and 5th gear will be higher. On the pictures, you can see where the 2nd gear dogs have no obvious wear and you can also see the difference in the gear widths. The last picture is with the bottom off the 83 engine with the original gears. RandyA
9. I don't usually post ebay listings on here because I feel if someone is paying attention to a listing on something they want, someone else should not post to the world of others too lazy to keep up with it. But, with the last transmission I picked up from an 86, which is after the correction, and me getting it for $25 plus a little shipping, there does not seem to be a lot of interest. So, I am going to post this and see if anyone is interested as in my mind this is absolutely the best way to fix a 2nd gear problem on an early 1st gen. With this and a few gaskets, I have not doubt you could end your 2nd gear problems forever as this is the way I did it several years ago on my bike. If anyone has any questions, just let me know. 10. Well this has been trashed over many times I have a list off seals and O rings but I know there is a thread for all the part numbers for my 1983 Venture second gear as I have a complete Vmax trans to replace the old one .I have had the talk with Rocket but I don't want to bug him as he in the mids of a big move . So, if anyone knows the thread it would be appreciated, Michael R in Calgary. Hay Brian F. your FB is Great!.
11. First I need to say that I had the clutch slippage issue in 4th and 5th. Also on a slight uphill grade, I could not hold 5th gear at 50 mph. It would shudder and buck causing to me to downshift. I orderes his clutch spring upgrade. WOW! This thing should be listed under performance upgrades! I feel like I have more power than before. I can even hold 5th gear on the same grade and accelerate! It is almost like a brand new bike. If you haven't done this yet, do it! Best purchase I've made yet! Just for giggles, Mine is a 97 RSTC with 63,XXX on the odometer. Second owner and was prob not taken care of to well by the PO. Thanks Skydoc_17!
12. Just taking a shot in the dark. Does anyone have any young ladies riding gear that your children might have outgrown that you might want to sell? My Daughter just turned 13 last Friday and shes 5ft tall and as skinny as a rail. I need to pick up riding gear for her and was hoping to save a little money. If you happen to have anything just PM me. Thanks....Karl
13. Hello everone, I have a in warrenty 06 rsmtd last week the dealer installed a new smaller gear that meshes with the gear on the clutch basket. The chirp was reduced for about 100 miles, then it came back. I called the dealer to report the chirp was back and he said he would call Yamaha and get back with me which he did. He gave me Yamaha's customer service number and said he has done all he could do. Now I need advice on what I should do next. Thanks for all of your help:sick: Midnight ryder
14. I have found what appears to be a tooth off a gear in my oil pan. Very small tooth, but I think it is that due to the profile on the sides. It has equal angles very similar to a gear tooth. I haven't started going through all the possible parts yet, just found it and it is late. Width is about .167" (across beveled faces) About .215" tall One guess is maybe cam tensioner? What else in there a gear this small? Brain is not putting a place to this piece. Gary
15. I'll try to be as straight as i can to give you the facts. 2000 RSV. I rebuilt my clutch slave. Nothing wrong with it, but I was in the area. I took off the heel toe shifter and removed the floorboard to get to it. Changed my fluid. Reassembled. Did have to twist the floorboard around a little bit to get it back to the front position. Maybe I bent something. Maybe i shifted some adjustments a couple rotations but nothing severe I wouldn't think. I easily shifted into first and second. The heel/toe shifter was rotated up with the toe at a high point. Couldnt step on the heel and make it shift. Then realized that if I steped on the toe slightly I could then shift to the third, fourth gear. Unfortunately could only move back to the 2nd or third gear. I am not hearing or feeling any problems internally when I am shifting. The pedal action does not move properly. Would really appreciate some guidance. Bob

But if you read the ENTIRE article...you will see a little mini-gripe about gear whine...huh? If you want gear whine, you sure dont have to spend 25 thousand dollars!
17. Is the clutch spring on my rstd the same as a 1st gen? If so it has 44000 miles on it and will slip a bit if I roll on the throttle in 4th or 5th gear. can I just go with a stronger spring like I did with my 89vr?
18. New member joining. Love the sight, lots of good info. Have 2nd gear going out in my 84 VR. Was wondering if i put an 86 or newer trans in it if it would work without any mods? Also would i need to change out shift drum and forks? Love the bike, would like to fix it. Any members out there that has a trans that they would like to sell me would be great? E-mail me at arwest_11@hotmail.com Thanks for any help you can provide.
19. OK folks, here's the thing. Motorcycle Gear, previously New Enough, has changed the program that they have used for a long time. The old program allowed you to designate your "favorite club" and then they put a dollar in the clubs account that I could then use as prizes and etc. in contests. They have now discontinued that program. They are now using a "affiliates code" like many other online advertisers do. They will now pay a small fee if a buyer enters their site from clicking on a banner. So, I am asking you to please use the banner that rotates at the upper right of the forum and the home page if you go to Motorcycle Gear to place an order. If you go to their site via your own bookmarks and etc., VentureRider will get no credit for your purchases. The same is true of Jake Wilson and Motorcycle Superstore. If you don't go to their sites by clicking on the banner at the top of our site, we get no credit for your purchases there. I don't fill our site with a lot of banners because I don't want this site to be about bombarding you with advertisements but if you use the few that I have at the top, it does help to support the club. Also, we have $159.00 in our old account with them and we have to give it away now or will lose it. So, we need to have a contest and the winner will receive a $159.00 gift certificate from Motorcycle Gear. I will give it some thought and come up with something later today. I will make a new post when I decide what kind of contest it will be this time. It will be something simple though and probably run for a week.
20. Hi everyone, My 2001 RSV is shifting from neutral to 2nd gear most of the time! When I see that it is in 2nd gear, I down shift one time and it will shift to neutral instead of 1st gear most of the time! I have to go back and forth once or twice to get to first gear out of neutral. Has anyone had this issue? What was the fix? Thanks, Steve
21. Is there an advantage in using a rear gear assembly from and FJR vs a Vmax? What about the speedo sensor?
22. I've decided that I need to make this bike reliable an ddrive it until it burns to the ground. I love my bike and I believe I can make it 100% reliable again. That said, I dont have the time or space to tackle a 2nd gear fix. the yamaha shops locally will do it for $4200.00 plus parts:sick:. I can buy a 86+ for that with low miles! Does anyone know of someone in Michigan that can fix the 2nd gear for a reasonable amount of money and can be trusted?
23. Okay we all know about the second gear problem, the washer at the end of the shaft is a metal that gets mashed flat and eventually the bike can't stay in 2nd gear. Here's my problem i can put the bike into 2nd and excellerate as long as I stay below 3500rpms. The bike will continue to excellerate even up to 55 mph. BUT if I try to excellerate faster the tranny pops out of gear then back in a again. It will pop out again if i keep trying to push it but stay in as long as it'd below the 3500 mark. I've talked about this with Skydoc 17 but Earl wasn't sure if this is the normal 2nd gear problem but because its in the second gear I believe it must be related somehow any idea what this might be???
24. Randya started discussing ratios in the following thread. This was regarding some work he is doing to his bike this winter. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?postid=551974#post551974 I thought I would start a new thread along these lines hoping to give a little better understanding to where all those ratio numbers come from. I confuse easily, so here is same info in a different format. All numbers are from the corresponding bikes service manuals. 1st Gen Ratios (From 1986 Service Manual) Primary reduction 87/49 (1.776) Secondary Reduction- Middle Drive 21/27 (0.778) x Final Drive 33/10 (3.300) -- Total Reduction (2.567) 1st 39/15 (2.600) 2nd 39/22 (1.772) 3rd 31/23 (1.347) 4th 31/29 (1.068) 5th 29/32 (0.906) Royal Star Ratios (From 1996 Service Manual) Primary reduction 85/51 (1.666) Secondary Reduction- Middle Drive 21/27 (0.778) x Final Drive 33/10 (3.300) -- Total Reduction (2.567) 1st 39/16 (2.437) 2nd 30/19 (1.578) 3rd 29/25 (1.160) 4th 29/32 (0.906) 5th 21/28 (0.750) RSV Ratios (From 1999 Service Manual) Primary reduction 87/49 (1.776) Secondary Reduction- Middle Drive 21/27 (0.778) x Final Drive 33/10 (3.300) -- Total Reduction (2.567) 1st 43/17 (2.529) 2nd 31/19 (1.632) 3rd 30/25 (1.200) 4th 24/25 (0.960) 5th 22/28 (0.786) 1st Gen VMax Ratios (From 1995 Service Manual) Primary reduction 87/49 (1.776) Secondary Reduction- Middle Drive 21/27 (0.778) x Final Drive 33/9 (3.667) -- Total Reduction (2.851) 1st 43/17 (2.529) 2nd 39/22 (1.772) 3rd 31/23 (1.347) 4th 28/26 (1.076) 5th 26/28 (0.928) The primary gear reduction is between the crankshaft and the clutch pack. The secondary gear reduction is from the middle drive through the rear axle gear case. All of the gear reductions first list the driven gear # of teeth, followed by the drive gear # of teeth, this ratio is then shown last. For a given comparison between the four bikes listed, the higher the ratio number, the more acceleration & low end power the bike will have. Lower numbers translate into higher speed. This is when comparing the same point in the drive train. In the case of the secondary gear reduction, there are 2 sets of gears. 1st is the middle drive set, followed by the rear axle drive set. The secondary gear sets also accomplish the task of taking the engine/transmission rotation and turning it first 90 degrees to attach to the drive shaft, then 90 degrees again to drive the rear wheel. In the case of the Vmax, the power increase that is often discussed in the rear axle gears. These gears have 9 teeth on the drive gear and 33 teeth on the driven gear. The 1st and 2nd Gen Ventures and the Royal Star all have 10 teeth on the drive gear and 33 teeth on the driven gear. The VMax ratio provides for more acceleration and low end power, but sacrifices top end speed. Three bikes, 1st Gen, RSV & VMax have the same primary gear ratio, and middle gear ratio. The difference is in the transmission & rear axle drive ratios. The Royal Star also has a different primary ratio in addition to the transmission & rear axle drive ratios. What this all translates to as it moves through the drive train is shown next. 1st picture shows inside of clutch housing looking up and forward towards the gear on the end of the crankshaft. Only the back quadrant of the gear can be seen. This gear is on the center line of the drive shaft, on right side. This gear mates to the clutch pack seen in next picture. The clutch pack provides a means of interrupting the flow of power to the transmission. The friction discs in the clutch pack are connected to the outer clutch housing, which has the larger gear seen at the bottom of the clutch pack. The steel plates are attached to the inner clutch boss. When the clutch lever is depressed, these two sets of plates allow the motor to rotate, while the transmission is not turning. The shaft that is in the center of the 1st picture is the main axle shaft of the transmission. The 3rd & 4th pictures are of the transmission assembly. 3rd picture is of a 1st gen main & drive axle assembly. Top is main axle, gears left to right are 5th, 2nd 3rd, 4th, 1st. Bottom is drive axle, gears left to right are Middle Drive gear (Bevel cut, Helical gear), 5th (machined on shaft), 2nd 3rd, 4th, 1st. 4th picture is a cut from the 1st gen VMax service manual showing these in the lower motor case. 5th picture is of rear axle gear case. Drive shaft attaches on left side and drives another set of bevel cut, helical gears. Drive gear is inside case. 6th picture shows driven ring gear. Gary
25. 1983 XVZ12TK About 2 months ago I had to replace my stator because I thought I was having charging issues. I carefully took the cover off taking note of how each of the gears were positioned and then put each one of them exactly as before. Replaced stator, oil, gasket. After reassembly i hooked up the battery and tried to start the bike. Immediately the starter turned over but before the bike started one of the gears disengaged with a gear grinding. I can start the bike but if it doesn't kick off right away the gear disengages. I have taken it back apart 3 times. I even have taken apart one of my parts bike to compare the two thinking I reversed a gear or over looked something. But I can not find any way any of the gears could be installed wrong, I then swapped the starter thinking that maybe the starter was getting ready to bite the dust but the starter that worked perfect of the parts bike does the exact same thing. When the starter spins the motor everything sounds normal. There is no binding or grinding. Has anyone ever made this error? Any ideas on what I have done wrong. I have spent over 30 hours taking it apart, putting it together over and over and I have had it. I love this bike but have to get this fixed. I am beyond the point of spending too much time and $$ .If I can not fix it soon I am either selling or going to take a LONG and expensive road trip to find a reputable tech that knows how to work on this bike. There are no reliable mechanics that are WILLING to work on a bike this age. Add the fact that something is wrong after I worked on it won't help them jump at the opportunity to fix it. Any help is appreciated. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!! Chris
