  1. My 2008 RSTD has about 18K miles and has a whine mosting in 5th gear and most pronounced below 50 mph. I have been around early Willys Jeeps for most of my life and the noise happily reminds me of an early Jeep transfer case, particularly with an aftermarket overdrive is added. Mine really isn't all that loud, even with the stock mufflers. My question is; should I be concerned at all i.e. asking the dealer about changing the clutch basket or is this just a characteristic of the motorcycle and I should love it for what it is just like I love my old Jeeps? I am hoping it is the latter. R.
  2. wHAT SPEED do you run your trike in 5th gear? It seems like mine will run 45 in 5th without problem.IT WOULDN'T do it on two wheels.Does anyone think it would get better gas mileage if I woul run it in a lower gear
  3. I have a '83 std with a few problems. I have nicknamed the bike Frankenstein due to a busted windscreen that now has some plexiglass stirps small bolts and fender washers holding it together. Question 1: She slips in 2nd gear at wot, doesn't pop out, just slips. Is this the dreaded 2nd gear problem? I have been planning on tearing her down this winter. Most of the plastics are in bad shape. From ebay I have managed to buy both side upper fairings and a trunk shipped for about 250. THe fairings need some repair but not much and much less than the current ones. Front forks need rebuilt, since they are apart might as well put some progressive springs in them. WHen I let off the throttle at highway speeds she seems to want to nose dive a bit, is this normal? I am also having some front brake issues so I will go through the whole brake system. WHen 2 up riding i seem to bottom out the rear shock when I hit bumps, thinking progressive needs to update that as well. I am also thinking of putting Vmax heads and cams on her. Got it apart might as well. RIght now when I start her up she pours fuel out of the overflow hose coming off the carbs. THinking I might need to do some carb work also. Is there any way to rejet the carb? Just kind of looking for a few little performance nuggets. I also read a post that someone cut and tinted a windscreen so that is on my list of things to do. And have her back on the street by March(my birthday). Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions greatly appreciated.
  4. My son(vegastruckee) set out on a 4,000 mi. road trip from Las Vegas a couple of days ago, on his 2nd gen 2002 VRS. Yesterday morning when he left Sacramento, Ca. he lost 5th gear. It was like he shifted to neutral. He called me at his next gas stop and I hit the forums. I made a couple of calls from the VR assistance list and Tim helped me find a place for truckee to get some help. I searched all over the forums for the problem and found some solutions by the time he made his next stop. I set him up with Justin at Pacific Motorsports in Eureka, Ca. They drained the oil and didn't find any fileings or gear parts in it, so truckee is continuing on. I think, from the way it sounds, he may have the old "pin" style gear change pawl, and the retainer clip has bent/broken and allowed the pin to partially dislodge. I will be going out to Vegas next month and ,if he completes his trip with no other issues, I will help him take the cover and clutch basket off and show him how smart I am. He expects to have to drop the motor and split it. I told him he shouldn't have any trouble in 4th if he watches his temp., fuel mileage, and keeps it under 75. His previous motorcycle was one of them Hiabussa's, so the last step might be hard for him.
  5. In the highly unlikely event that you collide with something small in road and the sidestand switch is damaged, cut the lead going into the switch. You will find two wires. Remove a little insulation and twist the wires together. Just make sure the stand is up before you leave. Didn't show up until I stopped for fuel. Put the stand down and the plunger must have stayed mashed, 'cause the bike wouldn't start in gear, only neutral. And died when I put it in gear. (Stand up or down) Switch must be jammed in open position.
  6. I've had my 09 RSV for about six months now and love it, but I'm not sure if I'm just not good at shifting or if there's some other problem. It seems like if I really rev up the engine right before shifting, and then quickly pull the clutch and twist down the throttle, it shifts pretty smoothly without any clanking noise. Putting it into 1st gear always clanks and even 2nd gear clanks a bit if I pull in the clutch and slowly shift into gear. 3rd also clanks a little if I pull the clutch and slowly shift into gear. It's like I need to rev the engine a split-second before shifting, not to get a clank. How much, if any "clank" or noise should I hear when shifting? I know some of you don't even use the clutch, but I'd rather use it. Can someone give me some pointers? Sorry to be such a newb. David
  7. I haven't been around the site much lately. Sold all the bikes and bought my 53 Mercury Monterey 2 Dr. Hardtop. I am quickly discovering that parts are hard to find and when I find them they are either pitted or very expensive. As a result I'm clearing out some of my motorcycle gear to raise funds for my new project! I take donations as well!! If you run them through the church I can make them tax deductible! Just kidding. I love the car and haven't missed the two wheels ------ yet!
  8. It's been a while since I have had a tach on the bike so to me the #'s are a bit high, but could be wrong. 45 mph, 5 gear, 2k 50 mph, 5 gear, 21k (small gap between the 2k bar and the needle) Thanks
  9. So to make a long story short I am instaling a different middle gear in my 88 venture, so I wanted to know when the back lash is to be checked in 4 different places should I have the very same back lash # in all 4 places or can I be any where from the min to the max setting as given in the book, because it looks like there can be 2 shimes on one side and 1 on the other, And if I was to use that blue dye to check my work would that work on the way the venture is set up Thanks.
  10. Hello Everyone: Can anyone make a suggestion on hot riding gear for my wife? When it gets hot, she refuses to wear long pants and will not wear her leathers. She enjoys the sun and would rather wear shorts. I prefer she not get on the bike without proper protection. Does someone know of a lightweight protective riding pant that allows good airflow that she could wear over her shorts and then remove easily during stops?
  11. Been trying to find info about the middle gear and output shaft. Specifically ... how to check free play or gear lash ... can shims be installed... can it be done with engine still in the bike...etc? I know I've read before some info about this but can't seem to find specifically what I want by searching. Could someone point me to some tech info about this or maybe you can walk me through the process... got some pics? I have the service manual but all the info there seems to be based on the engine being out of the bike and with the cases split.
  12. While I'm waiting on my coolant bypass-valve parts, Ill ask a question on another wore-out topic. Wasn't the 2nd gear issue on 1st gens fixed under a factory recall in the 80's, or under an extended warranty for that particular issue ? Or did the bike have to actually be experiencing the problem before they would fix it ? If it has been fixed in the past, is there any way at all to tell ? I bought my 83' about 8 years ago and am approaching 100k miles, fairly rigorous miles, most of them by me, and the tranny is as solid today as it was when I got it with 41k on it, so I am thinking that maybe 2nd gear was already done years ago by owner #1. Owner #2 only had it for a couple of years before selling it to me. He knew owner #1 and said that #1 had everything done on it by the dealer since day-one in 1983, even all his oil changes and tires, etc.... I am owner #3.
  13. I am now on my SECOND 86 VR, because I know that bike via 89,000 miles, at my YOUNG age of 70 getting another one just made sense! \ BOTH have had the second gear indicator light not working. The first bike was brand new. and the indicator worked for awhile. It's no big problem to me, and thanks to your posts on the second gear I will not be gentle with my second gear. Sounds like on the 86 it was well solved. Any wisdom on the light? Doubt I'll put much money out for the correction though. Just a question. Thanks to all, and all ride safe. Jack Tharp Fort Collins, CO Zfrebird4
  14. Bike is smooth as glass at 80 in 5th gear, but at 65 gets very buzzy, same with third gear is nice and smooth at 55 mph, but gets buzzy at 35 mph. (would carb pilot circuit do this?- have new pilot jets on order) Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..
  15. Damnit. I did my buddys clucth with the parts from shydoc_17 and all went well. . Well 2 weeks later I was riding my bike to my sister in laws house and the dang thing slipped in 5th gear while trying to pass, then again in 3rd gear but only when at high speed and trying to gain more speed at high rpm. I can take off from a light and blast through the gears with no problem. COme to think of it i just changed my oil to 20-50 valvoline MC oil.Whats going on?? Guess I got enough practice on his bike and now time to do my own.
  16. Rolled in about a half hour ago. Gee, it's over already! Had a SUPER time! Once again thanks Squid for helping out this old geezeer to gwet some work done on the scoot! Clutch works supurb! I discovered that guys sharing tools is a form of male bonding! So glad to run into everyone I knew already and to meet a few new people as well! As usual it was a hot day and it didn't rain! I'm really surprised there was that much left over ice cream. Kudos to Hummingbird for coming up with this, it was YUMMY!!! Great to havfe Pioneer Motorsports set up a tent, and they must have done alright because they are already talking about returning next year and adding riding gear to what they bring. That Midnight RSV they picked up along the way sure looked nice, and I know several of you were interested in it! Very pleased with the hotel accomodations for the price, and we were treated very well! Offering free rags was a nice touch! At first we weren't going to do next year but on the way home we decided it is waaaaay too much fun to miss! See ya all down the road!!
  17. I am new to this forum as well as the 2003 royal star venture that i just bought. I have searched all around this forum but haven't found the exact problem that i may be having. I say "may" because i'm not sure if this is the way this bike is supposed to sound and perform. This bike has 3200 miles on it and looks brand new so i picked it up for a deal. I am used to riding v-twins like my raider. I trailered this bike back home and I believe the previous owner hasen't ridden it for a few months. When I started it, it cranked right up and idled what sounded a bit rough but not bad, when i rev it while in neutral it sounds nice and smooth but throttle response is a bit bad. The real problem seems to be when the bike is under load, when i take off in first gear the smooth sound turns into a sort of a - putt putt putt putt sound like it may be missing, it also seems to surge a bit at the top of each gear. this thing seems to have very little power at top gear, when i twist the throttle at 60 mph it is slow to 70 or 80 mph, even if i downshift to 4th it makes noise but doesn't seem to go anywhere. I also get small backfires while downshifting and letting off of throttle, not bad, but i can hear them. I'm very accustomed to my raider which is very snappy at any gear, maybe its just me but there seems to be a problem.
  18. Wondering if this is 'normal'. At 75(speedo), 5th gear (or 65 speedo 4th gear), if you lay your hand on the tank (or squeeze with knees) I can feel a pretty good buzz. I can also feel it in the floorboards and the hand grips. The bike is an 06 rstd with 6,000 miles. New rear tire(E3). If I pull the clutch at speed the buzz completely dissappears, so I'm thinking it can't be tires...has to be engine. Also, If I am running a little slower in 5th...say about 65, gentle cruise, there is a light thumping/ticking in the passenger seat and backrest...it is not a fast as the buzz but faster than wheel spin. I know all about letting these engines rev, and have of course felt the heavy vibration/shaking when I try to do too much acceleration in 5th or 4th....the buzz isn't this....the pillion 'ticking' does seem to be at the same frequency as the lugging feeling you can get in too high a gear...but it is there even when holding at steady speed(just less pronounced). Have net yet tried sea-foam, new plugs or carb sync (don't know if PO did it before me either). Engine runs so well I did not think any of these was indicated....could be wrong though. Thanks for any help or suggestions.
  19. I wanted to show what the Volusia's clutch plates wound up looking like when I took them out. I have two words: Crispy Smooth. The order of removal goes from first one out on the top left progressing right to the last one out (TM-1b) on the bottom right. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Volusia%20Intruder/Burnt%20Clutch/IMG_6107.jpg Also, ignore the shredded gasket material, that came out after the removal of the plates. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Volusia%20Intruder/Burnt%20Clutch/IMG_6109.jpg Closeup of 13 and 12. Some friction material, but not much. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Volusia%20Intruder/Burnt%20Clutch/IMG_6110.jpg 11 and 10, smooooooth. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Volusia%20Intruder/Burnt%20Clutch/IMG_6111.jpg 9 and 8, also very smooth http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Volusia%20Intruder/Burnt%20Clutch/IMG_6112.jpg 7 and 6. 7's not so bad Actually had quite a bit of Friction material left. Just cooked. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Volusia%20Intruder/Burnt%20Clutch/IMG_6113.jpg 6 (again) and 5. Five coulda been worse too. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Volusia%20Intruder/Burnt%20Clutch/IMG_6114.jpg 4 and 3 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/GAWildKat/Volusia%20Intruder/Burnt%20Clutch/IMG_6115.jpg And finally, 2 and TM-1b. So those are my deep fried, oil battered plates. Whatcha think? Now 5th gear actually feels like a 5th gear with acceleration all its own and not just a weaker version of 4th gear...if that makes any sense to y'all.
  20. Dont know how to do a search for this question so will ask instead. Started the royal star up today, pressed the clutch lever there was no tension. Put in gear, it died. Put in neutral and started it again and put in first. The clutch lever did not work. Could not get out of gear to neutral. Had to kill it and roll back and forth to get to neutral. I put in a new clutch kit a few years back, hardly any miles on it. Should I change out the fluid or the engine oil? Any ideas? Jim
  21. Come on by and watch me.... After spending most of the winter taking on the 2nd gear issue and having lots of ups and downs we finally got the bike back together. Hooked it all up with exhaust etc.. Lots of help from folks on the site.. Like Dingy, Dano and Skydoc. Mostly Marcarl.. Anyhow it started right up BUT it makes an enormous racket while in neutral. Goes through the gears fine and quiet in every gear but in neutral it sounds like a metal playing card on bicycle spokes... Looking like I have to pull the motor again which is a BIG job for my limited skills and then chase down the problem and re-assemble. Down time with not riding is going to kill me... Anyhow does anyone have any suggestions as to what I did wrong? Wayne
  22. as i am shifting thru the gears , either up or down i always count the gear i am in - does anyone else keep track this way....curious minds what to know !
  23. OK I sent my V-Max final I just bought to Pegscraper to have the speed sensor hole installed for the RSV. It was reported to be off a '98 with 16000 miles on it. When he took it apart he found the pinion gear that showed galling on the faces. I've dealt with galling before but not in a situation like this. It almost looks like a bad gear casting. Generally the gall is shiney, gouged and flaky looking. Attached are some pics of what he found. These are the worse, but they are all show signs. The ring gear has none and looks good. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Has anyone here... Squeeze?? seen this before, and is the pinion still usable?? Should I take the chance?? I could salvage a pinion out of another final, but will it work without having to deal with backlash etc.?? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  24. my wife wanted to take a ride to Roanoke Va. today, about 130 miles each direction. i decided that since the max speed limit anywhere i drove today would be 65 mph max, that i would make the entire trip in fourth gear. 98% of my riding is two up and my gas mileage lately has been around 33mpg but that was using fifth gear. my max speed today was 70 mph indicated on the speedo and if mine is 7% off then i was actually doing around 65 mph. the terrain from where i live to Roanoke is mildly hilly, so driving @ 65 in fourth kept the rpms in basically the sweet spot and especially pulling the hills. on my refill on the way back home the odo was showing 180 miles and it took 4.3 gals. to top it off - so essentially i got 42 mpg, which is 9 mpg better than i was previously getting. i would like to open up this strategy for discussion, such as pros/cons of fourth gear engine rpms vs. fifth gear engine rpms on longer trips. can anyone with a tach on the rsv or rstd tell me the rpms @ 70 mph indicated in fourth gear vs. rpms @ 70 mph indicated in fifth gear. i understand that fourth gear is technically an overdrive gear but am interested in your opinions. looking forward to the discussion, thanks ! buz
  25. The first mod is to replace the carbs with "Guppy 471's". No, they're not fuel injectors, they're gills. Also plan on taking off the Avons and putting on "Evenrudes". Will get me through the water better. Replace the stock handlebars with a new chrome "Rud-R", gotta steer this beast somehow. The hard bags will go, pontoons in their place. Finally, all my road gear, jacket with CE armor, riding pants that are padded and armored, full face flip up helmet, gloves- chuck it all for a good wet suit and scuba gear. At least I'd get the bike out.....
