  1. 2005 rsv. while out for a ride today with old goat we got out on the highway he got out and went like hell. must say his bike is running better thanks to all of you pepoles help. well i started hitting gears real fast and thought i had one more gear pulled in the clutch and noticed i was in top gear let off and just kept on the gas. no problem then. but when we went into town and i was in 2nd gear oldgoat said he thought he heard a chirp or whine comming from somewhere ? in top gear he said at 60 mph it wasent so bad? did i mess up the clutch?
  2. any one have this happen? went out for a short ride as im still healing. was ridding down main street in a little town after a 40 mile ride. Dianne was with me i hit the throtle and poof bike stoped? ok coast over to the wendys parking lot. shut key off turned it back on tank showed one bar? while on side stand. i took it off the side stand it showed 2 bars on the fuel gage. would not start? ok i carry a one gallon gas can in top trunk. gas staion right next to wendys thank god as its hot out today. i got one gallon of gas and the bars didnt move on the fuel gage? hit the starter and vroom it fired right up. went over and filled the tank. bars are at the top. took 4.5 gallons total to fill it thats with the one gallon gas can i allready put in. the petcock is stuck so i dont dare try and move it. from the looks of the petcock it looks like its on RES?. never had this happen before and allways got around 40mpg. when the bike ran good. looks like im now pulling 34 mpg?
  3. Grand child #21 arrived at 10:45 this morning!! "Adilee Paige" Pics to come. I was holding her around noon when she opened her eyes for the 1st time and grinned at me!!! I know there are those that are going to say it was just gas!!! Probally the same ones that try to claim a 1st Gen won't do 120 MPH in 3rd gear!!!! Left camera at hospital. Got one. See those fists? That left is cocked!!
  4. Hi gang, See if you can figure this out for me and you win the prize. For sometime now my bike has been running great! Last Thursday I rode to work and all was well then headed home filled up about 2 miles from work, and then it started. No high end speed above 45/50 MPH I made it home all the way home on the back roads. bike just wants to bog down. First thing I did was call the station and I figured they had some bad gas. they say no complaints. then I proceeded to drain the fuel and the bowls and fill up with another batch of fuel from another gas station. still the same problem. Next I check the plugs, the Fronts were carboned fouled real sooty, REALLY black. So I changed them out as well. still the same problem. I am wondering if I have another Coil Problem. I also changed the fuel filter first thing. The one thing I have not changed is the Fuel Pump. I do have (2) spares though. but the bike will run for ever below 50MPH and Idle just great. I also did a carb sync just for the heck of it. Any Suggestions would be great. Thanks, Jeff
  5. Don't know if this the same for all Ventures but on MINE it sure is.... Filled the gas tank yesterday and put the gas petcock to Reserve. I normally switch it back th Normal after 25-30 miles. I do this because I don't want any gunk build-up in the petcock and this also ensures that I have good flow.... Well today I found out that with the petcock in the Reserve position the Low Fuel Light does NOT come on and the Trip odometer does NOT warn of impending Low Fuel as it does NOT zero out. Luckily for me when I ran out of gas I was able to slap the bike over onto its kickstand and get enough gas to the left side of the tank.....which enabled me to haul a$$ to the nearest Exit and Gas Station. Boomer....who sez ya gotta remember ALL the steps of any procedure ya use....even when it comes to thumping on the pygmies during periods of cheesecake withdrawal.
  6. First I would like to say that I have been reading the forums a bit, trying to figure out my problem.. See, my bike (83 XVZ12) was sitting in the shed for almost 2 years. I figured it would be a good time to clean the carbs (something I am not comfortable doing myself.) The man at the shop was very kind and insisted I try to Seafoam it first. So I added almost 16 oz to about 1.5 gallons of gas, ran it for a bit on idle (to clean out the idle circuit) and let it sit for about 2 days, then ran it again. Ran through the entire Seafoam/Gas mixture, added regular gas to the tank, and to me, it runs a little better. One problem It has is that it idle's funny. I start the bike cold with the choke on until it's idleing at 3000 or so RPM, then slide the choke off. If I slide the choke all the way off, it will stall every time. Not sure if that is a feature or a bug, but I adjust the choke to get it to about 1000 RPM idleing. It idle's reasonably smoothly now. Until I try to give it throttle.. When I give it slight throttle, the first thing it wants to do is stall. Often times it does. Giving it very little throttle will drop the RPM to about 5 or 600 before it kicks up.. 1000-2000RPM is sloppy, after that it sounds like a mean machine and the gas seems to work pretty good. I think it's a carb sync issue.. what do you all think? I spent the morning trying to make one of those "home made DIY carb sync" tools with 3/16"ID tubing and connectors, and when I hooked it up, the fluid rushed towards the carbs almost too fast for me to shut the bike off in time. Do you think I just need to get the carbs sync'd? Thanks, Steve
  7. finaly get to pick up my bike in time for the 4th. the dealer replace needles and seats. says it was due to gas. covered under warrenty tho. got a carb synch and tuneup out of it.
  8. Has anyone vented the filler tube by the gas cap on a 1st gen? It takes a long time to get that sucker full to the top. I've seen the 2nd gen pics but no 1st. 83' VR Brent.
  9. I fear the fuel pump has given up the ghost on my 06. Won't start at all with the choke out....maybe 1-2 clicks from the fuel pump when I turn the key. Tank full of fresh gas....new fuel filter....everything else working fine. They shoot horses don't they? Boomer.....well stuck for a while it looks like.....sigh.
  10. Just when you think all is going good....you start leaking fuel. My '86 has always averaged about 32 mpg. With a trip coming up I wanted to improve that and so I did the needle shim mod about 3 weeks ago and got an improvement to 38-40 mpg. All was well!!! The next tank I dropped to 35-36 mpg and shortly after I started to get wiffs of gas when I stopped but never had any signs of leaking under the bike. I also notice a little bit of vibration in the bike. So, I got out the carbtune and did a sync. Things were a little better but still get a gas smell here and there. Started thinking - stuck float. Last night I put the bike on the center stand and started looking for the leak and was getting a few drops under the bike in front of the rear tire. I removed the side panels and gave each carb a thwack with the but end of a screwdriver. No change. Gave the bike a rest and came back to it 20 minutes later and repeated the procedure but this time when I popped #3 I suddenly got an evening out of the idle and a slight reduction in rpms. Turn the bike off...no more drips. This morning I ride to work, park and suddenly get the smell of gas.. shooooot. I get off and has a dollar bill size spot under the bike. I just got back from Wally World where I purchased SeaFoam and dumped a full can into a just new tank of gas and a short ride to get it in the carbs. Smaller puddle when I parked it this time but still there. I guess we'll see how it does parked in the warmth with SeaFoam in the carbs for the day. Could something else be the culprit here... diaphram issue or needle come loose? OH The frustration!!!
  11. Not even sure where to start on this one... For some background, I ran the bike completely out of gas about 3 weeks ago... not far from home, so I was moving again in minutes. Anyways, since then I have been plagued with a sticking float or floats. We went to Marcarl's M&E a couple of weeks ago, and part-way thru the afternoon ride, I could smell gas (gasoline, that is...) and the engine was bogging. When the group stopped at a Tim Horton's for a break, there was certainly fuel coming through the overflow hoses to just in front of the rear wheel. I limped it home, saw that Carbs #1 and #4 were pouring fuel out of the overflows after I pulled the airbox off. I shut the fuel off at the tank and let the carbs empty themselves as I did a light drum solo on each carb body. I turned the fuel back on, hit the key, and after a few clicks, the fuel pump shut off with nothing out of the overflows. Good... problem solved. The next morning, I rode about 40-45 miles to Waterloo to pick up some friends on their bike, and escort them back to our place. My machine ran great. However, on the return trip to take them home, at least one float stuck again... same old issue : gas out the overflow tubes, and engine flooding. Got home. Emptied the carb bowls again, then let the pump suck straight Seafoam into the bowls. I let it sit overnight. Checked the next morning, and when I hit the key.. one click from the fuel pump.. no more. Good. That fixed it. Rode 2 days later... guess what ? Stuck float. Gas. Overflow. Expletives from me, disapproving eyerolls from wife. Redo Seafoam treatment. Let it sit 2 days. Fuel pump shuts off as it should. No fuel dripping anywhere. But, I ride for an hour. Smell gas. Engine bogging. Four letter words in abundance. Call Carl and reserve a space in his gorgeous shop last Monday. Bring my spare rack of carbs with me, figuring I can replace a bad float or floats, valves, etc. Remove carbs, finally get backs off of bowls - they are whistle clean inside. Valves certainly do not look damaged. Check the bouyancy of the floats.. all is well. Spray the seats of the valves liberally with carb cleaner, reassemble. All works as it should... the bowls fill, then the fuel pump shuts off. No overflowing fuel. Do little happy dance. Change plugs as the old ones have seen a lot of Seafoam and excess fuel. Seems to be running the way it should. Go for a ride tonight - and I don't even have to tell you to guess... I smell gas as I slow to a stop about 30 miles into my ride. Arrrrgh... One of Carl's (1 Gen's answer to Yoda) thoughts on Monday was that it could be the fuel supply line from the pump gradually disintegrating.. allowing little pieces of former hose to clog the float valves. It certainly could be... but why always carbs #1 and #4 ? The are diagonally opposite each other. I should be able to replace the fuel line tomorrow.. that is an easy thing to try and not expensive. However, before I run completely out of curse words, anyone else have any other thoughts if this repeats itself again ?
  12. Good morning everyone, The question i have is about the fuel gauge on my 08 RSV. As the bars reduce to empty is this an indication of the whole tank or is the reserve still intact? A few of my freinds ride with the fuel pet-cock on reserve, but i try to tell them if they ever run out of gas, thats it !!! they'll be pushing. So i was wondering if the fuel gauge on my RSV reads the reserve gas. Also how far can i expect to go on a reserve before runnung out? Thanks and have a safe summer Frank
  13. What fuel does every one use?? I have been using the highest Octane I can get get, but read that some just run Regular gas???
  14. This rsv 07 trike has been sitting for over a year.It runs good ,except it won't idle without the choke on.The trike has 276 miles on it.I have been reading about seafoam, how much should I put in a full tank of gas.
  15. Had carb sync at meet & eat I have run two tanks of gas 40.2 & 39.3 two up. I was geting 35,36 mpg at best. I thought bike was running good before sync but much more efficeint now thanks to Slick97spirit and and Eck . jmc
  16. After the funeral Friday my Daughter went up to spend the Holiday with her nephew in the thumb of Michigan. I road the bike up to bring her back and for the 2 hour ride back she didn't shut up once. Did not hook up the intercom and she just rattled on and on and on. If I didn't answer her she just answered herself. When we hit rain I figured she would close her visor and couldn't talk, but no, left it open and just kept talking away. Man did I get a ear full of her future hopes and dreams. Even when we stopped to get gas she talked while I was pumping, followed me in to pay for it and never missed a beat. At times I just couldn't keep from laughing. I better have a good cell phone plan when I let her have her own phone.
  17. I have gas leaking from hose near ground under seat but only when bike sits in hot sun? I know the standard answer is stuck float but I put bike in shade or garage and no leak?? Any ideas?
  18. My wholesome honey and I just got off the Blue Ridge Pkwy to get some gas. I checked my mileage after running about 135 miles and it was 49 mpg.
  19. Well I pulled up to the gas pump today and pulled the ignition key opened gas cap and filled tank. Put key back in ignition and key will not turn????? Handlebars are not locked and key works every where else (gas cap and bag locks) any ideas??? Had to load bike on trailer to get it home. Any help would be appreciated
  20. I removed my tank and when I pulled the gas line off - the brass sleeve going into the the shutoff came out instead of the tube coming off the sleeve. Can I just push it back into the shutoff valve or do I need to do some repair here? HELP!! It is such a nice day and my day off so I want to ride!!
  21. Hello VR Forum! I'm a newbie here as I just purchased a 2006 RSTD last night. It's a sweet bike, but I already have one problem. The dealer (or someone) put the gas cap in wrong. It's stuck and won't come out. The triangle notch on the top of the cap is pointing at the road behind - the 6:00 position - when it should be pointing at the road ahead - the 12:00 position. I tried and tried to get the cap off, but had no luck. Today after work, I'm going to try to hold the key in the unlocked position while spinning the gas cap so it's in the right position to be removed. A mechanic at a local Yamaha dealer suggested this one. Any other advice?? Thanks, Greg
  22. have a 1300 v star fuel injection model. gas drips from vent tube when parked. any ideas
  23. I had a gas and maintenance program that I kept all of my information in. It was a free program that I could make logs for 3 vehicles.Anyway our computer crashed:starz: a couple of months ago We bought a new one . We were able to recover most everything, but this program did not survive. My question: Does anyone know where I can find another free program to continue keeping track of all I do on my vehicals? ( Sorry I don't remember the name of the program I had) Thanks
  24. Is there anyone around the Knoxville TN area who has the tools to help me sync my carbs. I want to have this done to see if if it helps. I don't mind going to your place but I don't trust this bike to go a long ways. Can you leave the petcock on the right rear on res all the time. I ran out of gas the other day after only 150 miles and could not turn the petcock to res. Had to call the wife to bring me gas.
  25. OK so I decided that I wanted a cover to go on my gas cap...for two reasons. One, to eliminate any glare off the purty chrome. And secondly, to have something to set my gas cap onto when I am gassing up the bike. Here's the one I bought. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitemdetail/5/4/83/407/all/1/186/0/detail.aspx To make a long story short...this thing SUCKS!!! So, I had a buddy of mine make me one. I thought he did a fine job on this. My name of my website is ArkieBiker and he customized this one for me. Fits like a glove and I don't have to struggle like HECK to get the thing over the cap. Plus, this one will hold up a LOT longer than the Yamaha piece of crap. I just wanted to share it with some of you here. Wally
