  1. Put gas in the tank and fuel comes pouring out the butterfly end. Any suggestions as to what needs to be fixed?
  2. I thought I had a 6 gal tank on my 01 RSV but when it reaches the point where I have to out it on reserve it only takes me 4.5 gals to fill it up. Also what kind of gas mileage do you all get? Thanks
  3. I guess I’ll begin by introducing myself. I’m Lee Winders and live in the small town of Mansfield, Tn. A few months ago I purchased an ’83 VR. The motorcycle had been setting up for quite some time. The man I bought it from hadn’t ridden it very much. He bought it from someone that I think had let it set up as well. The man I bought it from said the last time he rode it, it quit and he was unable to get it to run again. He said it acted like it was not getting gas. He had shown me the bike about a year ago and I told him if he ever wanted to get rid of it to let me know. He called me a few months ago and asked if I would give $200.00 for it. Well I figured it would be worth it if only for parts. I got it home and the first thing I did was remove the carbs. They were a mess to say the least. I went through and cleaned them as well as I could. I removed the gas tank and drained it. I replaced the fuel lines and filter on the tank side of the fuel pump. I still have the original fuel line on the pressure side. By the way, the bike has 19,000 miles on it. I put fresh gas in it and tried to start it. After about 10 minutes of messing with it, it finally hit. It will only run when fully choked. And then it runs very rough. I’m sure the carbs are way out of adjustment. I also notice the when trying to crank it, one of the carbs didn’t have any suction at all. Possibly a stuck valve. I don’t have the air box on it at this time and I’m sure this would also affect the way it runs. There is a lot of other work that needs to be done on the bike but first I want to know that the engine is ok. I really don’t think there is anything seriously wrong with the bike. It’s going to be a work in progress. I welcome all the help I can get
  4. hello i just got a call from my friend dianne up in north dakota. she said last night she filled up her gas tank then put it in the garage to get ready for a ride today. well she went inside to start up the bike and saw the tank looked like someone caved it in.? she is upset as i would be too she hopes this would be coverd under her warrenty? she bought the bike last year vstar model. i tould her to call the place down here where she bought it then go to a local dealer up there im sure they will replace the tank. the poor woman is in tears. she said she cant even find one on ebay in good condition and close to her silver/black color.
  5. OK...I'm gonna post my new bib (very similar to my first one)...and the new gas cap. These gas caps are GREAT as a decorative item and even better in use for limiting GLARE off the gas cap and also giving you a place to put your gas cap when filling up. These are a combination of regular pictures and iPhone pics.
  6. Looking for help. Yesterday I was heading from Wisconsin to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. 20 miles down the road my 2005 Venture sputtered like it was running out of gas and left me stranded on the side of the road. Gas tank was full. Kill switch was fine. Plenty of electrical power as I could crank it over but it would not start. My dealership came and trailered the bike back to the shop and the bike starts right up and runs fine. We figure a fuel pump issue and by pass the fuel pump and I'm back on my way to Yellowstone. 20 miles down the road it does the same thing and I'm stranded again. Again the dealership picks me up and when we get back to the shop and the bike runs fine. Other things that I tried: Undid the vent hose thinking vapor lock. There was no pressure from the gas cap. Actualy tried running the bike with the gas cap off. No luck. Plenty of fuel from the petcock. The bike seems to run fine after it sits ( and cools down) for awhile. The dealership and I are out of ideas. Any help???? I can be reached at (608) 576-3117. I hope to catch up with my Yellowstone riders today. Thanks Mike Hickok Chapter 166 Madison, WI
  7. I turned my bike on yesterday and the driving lights wouldn't come on at all. The dealer did the install back last December and they didn't put the switch in as per the Yamaha instructions. I'm almost certain that the fuse inside the faring is blown and that I have a pinched wire either in the centre of the bar mount or when the bike is swung all the way out in one direction. I did notice that on the right hand side when I swing it out to expose it, that a blue wire looked pinched. Today I purchase all of the necessary parts to install a relay and a switch. I have been reading lots of the posts on this subject and my one question at this point is do I have to take the gas tank off in order to do this? One post with pictures says that the gas tank has to be removed. Has anyone installed a relay and a switch without having to remove the gas tank? Thank you in advance Chris
  8. Hi folks, we just got back from another road trip and on the second day out, found ourselves in one of those cliff hanger rides on the back roads, where your GPS says there is a gas station, but it's no longer there and the 'next' one is erhm beyond your range.. Tempting fate we continued on with few options on this long stretch of back roads.. By the time we got to a gas station, we were on fumes.. The F counter showed 23.7 Miles, and we pumped in 4.8 Gallons of fuel into the empty tanks.. that means we had what, .2 gallons left sloshing around? I had always been curious to know just how far I could go on reserve, and I just found out.. At least now I know.. To be honest, it actually gave me more confidence to ride the tank lower than I normally would... What if we had run out of fuel? Well the emergency plan was that since my bike burns slightly more fuel than my buddy, we would have pulled the hose off at the petcock and drained what ever I had left into an empty drink container and put that fuel into my buddy's bike and see how far he could go on it.. prolly a few more miles further and closer to a gas station etc.. and he would come back with some fuel to get me there as well.. (contingency plans abound....) What's the lowest you got your tank down to? T
  9. Was wondering what do people carry the extra gas for a long trip in....
  10. I paid a horrible amount of money for this edition of Cycle Magazine, and I am happy to share the interesting bits. I have uploaded the full size images of all the following pics, and they are clear and legible. Any problems and I have the original pages. Lots of it is interesting, but the gas consumption over the trip was 40.6 mpg. That is with a single rider, carrying 20lbs of gear. The gas in 1988 had no ethanol and we should, I think, expect around 1.5mpg poorer with E10. There may be other factors .... add comments So high 30s seems to be about right for one-up, fairly spirited riding. Anyone struggling to read these .... The original images are much bigger, and easy to read. Try downloading these from Photobucket, and if it's still a problem I can send copies of the originals. Enjoy. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0646.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0647.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0650.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0653.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0656.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0659.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0665.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/1986%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Royale/Cycle%20Road%20Test/IMG_0668.jpg
  11. Hi Everyone - This is my first time here and I am from Woodbury, MN. Some guys on the Venture Rider's Facebook page told me there are some brilliant people here. Has anyone else had problems with their Royal Star shooting gas out of the carbs when it comes out of winter storage? I bought my 2006 RSTD brand new in 2008 and this has happened to me 2 times in 3 years! Last time it cost me $500 to have the carbs cleaned out. I followed the storage-prep instructions to a T. Very frustrating. What do I need to do to get it road-ready again. I'm not mechanically inclined and I am very disturbed at the thought of having to spend $500 for the 2nd time in 3 years to solve the problem. Thanks! Mike
  12. I'm looking for a speedometer for my 86VR. The odometer and trip meter have stopped working. The speed indicator works just fine. Took the thing apart and the nylon worm gear on the main shaft has stripped. Everything else on the instrument cluster works fine. I have a trip to Glacier Park planned fot the first two weeks of August and would like to know how far I've traveled plus keeping track of the gas so I don't run out. I have never really trusted the gas guage. If anyone has one available I would certainly like to buy it. For what its worth, the 83/85 speedo and tach have a different color face than the 86/93. I'm not sure if I could switch them out or not.
  13. About a month ago I was on my way home from work. With about 25 miles to go my fuel light came on. The gage still showed 3 bars. Well 10 mile later she runs out. I have to stop, lean the bike over, turn on the key till the pump stops. Drive for a few miles and do it again. I stopped 3 time before I made it to a gas station. I filled her up as far as I could and it only took 4.6 gallons. The same thing happend last night and when I made it to the gas station I could only get 4.5 gallons in and that gage still had two bars. Has anyone else had this problem. Where is the other 1.5 gallons?
  14. Just got back from a bike trip to Branson Mo and Illinois with my lovely wife. We were pulling a trailer with luggage and “essentials.” Trip spanned two weeks. Got lots of “thumbs up” from people in cars…guess there is something about a cycle on the open road! We had to opportunity to attend an informal reunion with some old Air Force friends we were stationed with in Germany, see some of the sights, and do some riding…then on to Illinois to visit my family and some of my high school friends. On the way back we stopped in West Memphis, Arkansas to visit an old AF buddy I hadn’t seen since 1973. Then another stop in Fort Worth to see one more AF friend I hadn’t seen in about five years. All in all it was a great trip! The trip up through Dallas was 104 degrees…with the traffic, it was really nasty! We ran into rain for about 100 miles from Springfield Mo to the east…then it cleared up. Other than that, the weather was not bad. I had busted my butt to get an American flag the day before we left (mine had started to tatter from the previous day’s ride)…borrowed one from one of our members (thanks, Tom)…somewhere in Arkansas it went airborne! Bummer!!! Got sick three days before getting home…made for a couple of extremely long days! Observations: · If you can physically only do about 400 miles a day (we are senior citizens), a motorcycle is not really that economical o What you save in gas, you more than make up for in motels · Sheepskin cover for the seat was TRULY worth the price! · Will likely take the cage on trips of a 1000 miles or more in the future…when you are the only driver…you are the only driver! It’s like the Cubs pitching staff…there ain’t no relief! · That being said…the ride was great! Stats for the trip are as follows: Total miles 2597.8 Gas averaged $3.449gal Avg mpg 36.3 Total gas cost $245.71
  15. How does one remove the sticker put on the gas tank on a new bike warning about wearing a helmet? I tired with my finger nail but its on very well. I certainly do not wish to scratch the paint trying to remove it. Thank you in advance for the help.

  17. Ok a somewhat new development in my saga with the VR. Lately, (yesterday and today) the bike has idled high on initial decel and then slowly drops to around 900 RPM. The choke is off, and the linkage is free, all other throttle linkage is free moving as well. My theory is this could be carb float related as I am having hard start issues when the bike is warmed up and a strong smell of raw gas when the ignition is turned on. Otherwise performance is awesome with very crisp and smooth acceleration, plugs all look good and about 5 oz of Seafoam in every tank of gas. I am puzzled as carbs are not a strong point for me. Give me an ECU, injectors, O2 sensors, a MAF and a laptop and I can get most things purring. So gurus of the carb please enlightened me. I have done a rudimentary float level check, cleaned everything I could with the carbs on the bike and I believe the floats need adjusting but I am curous if this high idle could be related. Thanks
  18. This is a long story: I want to start by saying that I have been getting worse and worse MPG's lately. I used to get about 42mpg and am now down to about 30. I have changed plugs, oil, filters and have done a carb sync at idle and at higher rpm's. I have also tried ethonal free gas and nothing seems to help. Okay, yesterday I changed the fuel filter although it probably didn't need it. Today I started my bike with no problem and rode it to work without any issues.(15 miles) I came out of work this evening and when I walked up to my bike I could smell gas. I pulled out the choke and turned the key. I could hear the fuel pump trying to get gas but it kept running and my yellow light that usually lights up during the fuel pump prime wouldn't come on. I pressed the starter and the bike wouldn't start and the bike acted like the battery was dead. I tried this 3 times and got the same thing each time. Just for the heck of it I turned the petcock to reserve and tried again. The fuel pump sucked up the gas and the bike started right up. My first reaction was that I was leaking gas and was almost out. I drove to the closest gas station and while doing so I slid the petcock to on while riding. Within a minute the bike was starving for fuel so back to reserve I went. The bike smoothed out. When I got to the gas station and filled up I was amazed when it only took a little less than 3 gallons which would mean that I wasn't any where near reserve. Once the bike was filled I put the petcock back to the on position and the bike started right up and ran fine all the way home.(15 miles). However my wife just told me that the garage smells like gas....Any ideas
  19. I'm planning a trip from San Antonio to Springfield IL at the end of May. I will be in Illinois for about a week and I am concerned because the last time I was there the only gas I remember included ethynol. My question(s) is/are...is there regular gas available in Illinois? If not, does using the ethynol mix negatively affect our engines? Sure appreciate any help on this. Thanks in advance. Jim T
  20. One of the things I wanted to do on going to Freebird’s MD was to take a little extra time and set up a route to take mostly secondary roads. By doing this, Linda and I set it up to only travel about 250 miles the first day, Thursday, and then about 200 the next day, stopping by Don’s on the way to Elyria, OH to check into our room. We started out from NE TN going up 23 thru VA and KY up to Portsmouth, OH, which are mostly curvy four lanes. We were early enough to be able to get into our room and take a swim, rest a little and then go out to dinner. After a great dinner, we walked along the levy on the river side then back on street side with all the murals. Very interesting way to present history of the area. With our walk being over a mile, it was nice exercise after being on the bike for about five hours. In putting this trip together, Linda and I found that we had about $85 on various Walmart gift cards left over from Christmas. This was a perfect way to use them up and have great memories. With this, I went on line and found Walmarts that have gas stations and was able to get almost all our trip gas by doing this along our way. Another thing that I had not really done before to any extent was to use a GPS on a trip. I have a cheap one that I bought off one of the sale things on the internet for about $39, plus $5 shipping and it worked great. What I did was to pick out some towns that I wanted to go thru and I would just load the center of town location. Then at about ten or so miles before I got to that town, I would call up the next town and that would help me get through or go around the town I had noted. I had found that by preprogramming, I could do about three touches on the screen and would be good to go. This also allowed me to get off on some of these secondary roads and not worry about going in circles. By doing it this way, it kept the GPS from trying to send me down the interstate. Friday was a great ride through the farm country on central Ohio and at times, it was like riding thru a moving postcard. There were the occasional farm tractors and school busses, but it was true Americana at its best. We were able to stop by Don’s and then get checked into our room and go to the Quaker Steak and Lube for a great visit and food. As many already know, Saturday was a great time, with some really neat folks and good food and helping out a little on some maintenance. I have to say that Don and Eileen are great hosts and have the perfect place for this kind of get together. I would have loved to have had the little camper and stayed there, but with the temperatures we had Saturday and Sunday, the air conditioned motel room was good. After going back to the room from Don’s, Linda and I rode up to Lake Erie and stopped at a couple of parks. It was interesting as I had not been there before, but flown over it some in a past job, but I was surprised at the lack of restaurants along the waterfront. Sunday morning, I rode over to Don’s to see a few off and visit again. This ended up being a lay around day and riding the area a little more. Monday we trekked down the middle of the state to a room we had reserved west of Charleston, WV. Again, a great meal and good rest and then the final leg back home on Friday. All in all, I can not think of a thing I would want to change other than maybe a little lower temperatures, but, we did not see a single drop of rain. We rode some beautiful roads, did not have any close calls and the bike ran absolutely perfect for a little over 1,200 miles. This says a lot for a bike over 28 years old with over 143,000 miles on it. I was a little surprised at the gas prices in that area as we have gas at about $3.40 at home and we saw $4.03. I truly feel very blessed to have so many friends on this site, have an antique bike that I am proud of that does so well and to have a very special person in my life that loves to ride and enjoys the back roads of America as much as I do. Life is very good. RandyA
  21. I need someone in the Hendersonville Tn. area to look at a BMW Z3 for me, be happy to buy your gas and a DQ stop in the process. Thanks
  22. I rode from Atlanta to DC last Thursday straight through, with only 1 long (1 1/2 hour) stop, other than gas and restroom stops. Just about did me in. 681 miles in just under 14 hours. Made me wonder what the record is for a continuous ride with only periodic breaks for gas, food, restroom, etc. Anybody know? How long was your longest ride in hours and miles?
  23. Anyone have any step by steps to for gas tank removal from a 2006 RSV??
  24. Many times I go for a short ride and then when I return, I fill the gas tank again at home with my 5 gallon can so when I want to go for my next ride I can without the need to stop at the gas station to fill up. My question is, what is it about the tank design that each time I top off the tank the gas level slowly goes down. I did this one time about 5 times then quit.
  25. Hey, I am having trouble with the fuel gauge. The sender has been replaced. Currently the tank has done 24 miles since full, and the resistance across the sender is 60 Ohms. So all correct there. The wires from the CMU to the sender both have continuity, and, when connected, the hot (Green/White) side is reading just over 5V. Yesterday I removed the CMU and resoldered a few joints, but mainly it looked to be in very good shape. When I got this bike just about every warning light remained on, and we are now down just to the fuel gauge. Could someone check for me what the voltage should be if when the gauge is displaying correctly, because what I am left with appears to be needing a new CMU. If we have any really, really well informed readers, who know which parts of the CMU control the gas gauge, then I could investigate the precise path in the CMU. There is some small, intermittent fault here as I have, on a couple of occasions, seen the gauge work, or at least try to with the gas pump icon out, and one or two bars on the gauge. Thanks.
