  1. Pulled the bike out of winter storage tonight & started to install a Show Chrome "plastic" gas tank/ignition cover. While installing I noticed that when the handlebars are turned all the way either direction (as they were getting it out of the corner), the risers push into this cover quite a bit, and it did it with the stock black piece also. This Show Chrome piece is much more brittle than stock though. I'm wondering if it's going to crack/shatter the first time I crank the bars over all the way. Anybody that has one have any issues with it? Thanks for the info...JR
  2. I know this is a dumb question but..... I bought a bike that runs great etc, but doesn't have a helmet connector. Looked under the plastic housing at the gas cap, nothing there. Where should I be looking for the cable? Thanks in advance.
  3. Say you were running low of fuel so you switch to reserve. You then top off with gas but you forget to switch back to the main tank. Will you have any gas left in the tank if you run out of gas?
  4. I just bought me a nice new shiny 2009 Venutre "S" and I am loving it! Within the past 40 miles, I have put on the Samson Slash Cuts, did the AIS Mod and did the 1/4 turn out on all the pilot mixture screw as I read about in these forums. I am woundering, though, what should I expect the gas mileage to be during the breake in period and therafter? Right now I have 400 miles on it and I am consistantly getting only 34 mile per gallon. My crazy, modified, and overpowered 2001 Road Star gets 37 mpg... will it get better as the engine breaks in?
  5. Hey all. I am a mechanical idiot. Now that I have gotten that out of the way....I have 2 questions....a gas question and an oil question. Gas-can anyone tell me the benefit of putting the high test gasoline in? I have had my RSTD since April and the dealer told me to put in the high end gas. Why? Oil-How often do you folks change the oil? Someone will be proud of me...I actually learned how to do it and took care of my bike. I appreciate the wisdom and feedback from the site. Thanks!
  6. Well the weather was beautiful here in NC today so after doing a bunch of yard work I thought I deserved to take a ride. After about 2 miles I started smelling this very strong gas smell so I pulled over and cut the engins off to see what the problem was. Lo and behold I crawled off and there under the bike was a puddle of gas. No being in the mmod to burn my great little first gen up I let it set for a bit to cool off and headed back home. Again I smelled the gas even stronger now and the bike wasn't running up to it's usual great self. When I got hom I left it outside to let any gas that might still be comeing from where ever it was coming from and for it to cool off before I pulled it into the garage. I was hoping this would eb a really simple find for me like a pin hole in the gas line from the fuel pump up but can life ever be that simple? Well not for me anyway. I pushed it in the garage and put the better halfs cager out side and put it up on the jack so i could get a better look at the situation. I turned the key on and the fuel pump strated pumping but just like always only 2 or 3 clicks and it quit...Shucks foiled again. So I took all the side covers off, the seat off, and the 2 little plastic pieces cover pieces so I could hopefully see where the gas was coming from. I started the ole girl up and here comes the gas but I can't see where it is coming from exactly. It is leaking on top of the rear shock and running down from there but I can't see where it is coming from. Can anyoone give ma any help on what I can to to fix this or if you even know what I am talking about? I haven't had a lick of trouble with this bike since I got it 5 years ago so I guees it's about my time but not being familiar with the mechanics of the bike I am at a loss. I searched the site before I posted this problem in hope of not having to bother any of the tech guru's but didn't find any related threads...they're probably out there I just couldn't find one...So to sum it up in one word....HELP!!!!!! I am going to try and attach pictures of where I am talking about so that it may help you to tell me what I need to do to fix it or what my problem might be.Thanks in advance for any help anyone might be able to give me.
  7. my riding season is officially open . just got another raise. going to cut my gas bill by 60%. happy day.
  8. My sister's son has long been known to have an alcohol addiction problem and has even been trying to land a job in one of their local bars lately in Bozeman, MT. Well, he has some refection to do now as he applied for a job in the downtown area bar of "Boodles", but was never hired. That's good for him as someone else now, (who might have been opening up the bar in the morning,) disappeared when the whole place blew to bits from a natural gas leak: http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa167/hlaltimus/Bozemanexplosion.jpg Story link: http://www.montanasnewsstation.com/Global/category.asp?C=50432&nav=menu227_3
  9. For the first time I saw a sign at a gas station saying Nitrogen enriched gas. Has anyone tried it yet and what did you think of it. tew47
  10. I am thinking of putting an aux gas tank on my 86. I would like it not to be over the back seat or in the trunk or saddle bags. Has anyone installed such a tank? Here is the one I am thinking of. http://www.coyote-gear.com/8inch.html I will put it across the back below the tail light. What do you think? Cody
  11. Well as you know my bike wouldn't start and now it is starting (see spark problem). Well I spent 2 days putting the bike and all the equipment back together. So I was so happy I started it right up and all I could hear was back firing and it was noisy. So I said to myself it's been sitting a month so it might need running down the road. Well that didn't work when I tried to give it gas and go the rpms would go down and the bike won't go so I pushed it back home. I looked down in the carbs as saw one of them was not moving so I took off the cover and pused it a little so it would work. I also put carb cleaner down in it. Well all the carbs were moving again but man was it popping alot and loud. It would idle great at 3rpm but when you went to 4 rpms the bike wanted to cut off and drop down to 1 rpm. The 2 carbs on the left side when you are sitting down on the bike we popping bad and fire would come out of them when you reved it. At 4 rpm the front carb would spudder and fire would come out of it and the compression would drop. When I tried to give it more gas the back carb would also do it and if you gave it more gas the bike would stall out. I called my mechanic and he said it sounded like the plug wires might be bad and I might to replace them well I did that and there was no change. So I gave up it's mechanic fault but I spent 650.00 to get the bike so it would start and now it doesn't run. The bike sounds great at 3 rpms but when you go to 4rpms the carb sliders start moving and it starts to back firing and the bike won't move. Am getting tired of this so if anyone wants to but 2 86 ventures loaded with chrome and all the extras will sell both of them for 3,500.00 I am tired of spending money since most of the mechanics know nothing on how to fix ventures. I will just ride my vw trike it easier to fix and I am not that motorcycle savy mechanic. Meatloaf:sick:
  12. Greetings Every time I've changed my oil I've always noticed the smell of gas shortly after the oil drains into the pan. Don't get the smell of gas any other time. Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks
  13. Went fo a good long day ride today and pulled into a station to fill up. As I was coming up to the station, I looked up at the markee and the price for reg was $3.11. That was better than I had been paying so I was happy. When I stuck my debit card in, I noticed reg was $2.98. I looked up on the markee again and it was now $2.98. Later on in the evening on the way back, I looked at the same markee again and it was now $2.82. That's nineteen cents in one day with at least two changes. Sure glad I did not buy a bunch of gas futures. Anyone want to make a guess where it will bottom at? I seen on gasbuddy.com where it was $2.39 in Oklahoma. I filled up in Asheville, NC at $3.11 and in the next block it was $3.79. We saw several stations in Asheville at $3.60 and up. RandyA
  14. Hey I'm cleaning out the garage and have up for sale a windshield, trunk, hard bags with brackets and a gas tank. Please check the classifieds or go to http://www.kloppenberg.us/garage_sale.html Thanks Tim
  15. I don't know you and you don't know me....but, I just HAD to say thanks. Today I installed a headlight modulator and ran the wire for the new passing lamps I'll be installing (when they arrive:bang head:). Anyway.....The tech articles on splitting the fairing & gas tank removal were just awesome. Thanks again and hopefully one day our roads will cross!!
  16. Just found some new crud for sealing those older tanks. First off if you have been sort of satisfied with KREEM in the past after you use this stuff you'll thro the KREEM away. Highly reccomend using the quart size offer - more than enough to do 2 tanks - find a buddy to split it with or it'll save. ____________________________________________________________________________ Epoxy Gas Tanoughenank Sealer http://support.caswellplating.com/themes/client_default/supportsuite.gifhttp://support.caswellplating.com/themes/client_default/space.gif Need Assistance? This Epoxy has much better bond strength than single component products, with strengths of up to 3000 PSI, and this higher strength reduces the need for a clinically clean surface, as the epoxy actually prefers to bond to a rough rusty surface. Our new phenol novolac is more thixotropic, which means it 'hangs' on the tank walls during the coating process. This gives a thicker overall coating. There is more volume of material in the kit to allow for this. http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/images/gtsbox.jpg What else can you use Gas Tank Sealer for? A corrosion and chemical resistant coating. ie: battery compartments. A high strength adhesive where plenty of working time is needed. A potting compound, to encapsulate electronics A non-skid surface, just bed in aluminum oxide. Relining old potato peeler machines (Hobart type) - coat liner and bed in aluminum oxide. Repair leaks in concrete vessels, Add fine sand to make a mortar. Bonds to almost anything except polyethylene. Bonds to Wood, plastic, rubber, concrete, metals. Making high quality molds - virtually no shrinkage on curing. Thin cross section repair of sheared parts, such as; broken cups, dishes, or a split leg on a chair. Application Instructions All traces of oil and gasoline should first be removed by pouring about 1 pint of acetone or lacquer thinner into the tank, and rotating the tank several times to thoroughly sluice the sides with solvent. Dispose of the contaminated solution. When recoating your gas tank from failed Kreem or POR-15 tank sealers, remove the old, failed coating using a paint stripper containing Methylene Chloride. Place a hand full of drywall screws into the tank and shake them around vigorously for several minutes. These will dislodge any loose particles of rust. In the case of Fiberglass and plastic tanks, this will rough up the tank interior, improving adhesion. Rinse out the tank with about 1-pint of acetone or lacquer thinner, then set aside and allow to dry. Use an airline to blow air into the tank to aid drying. Apply duct tape or masking tape to any weeping seams, holes or porous areas. This will stop any Gas Tank Sealer from oozing out, and will allow it to bridge over the hole. Plug the outlet ports with putty or Play-Doh. Mix up the required amount of Gas Tank Sealer (one unit should treat two x five gallon tanks) If you are only treating ONE 5 gal (or smaller) tank, then divide parts A & B in half. You could use a dipstick to gauge this. In a separate plastic container (margarine tub etc.) mix the two parts together thoroughly for at least 2 minutes. Scrape around the sides to ensure all resin is blended together. BAD MIXING AND BAD MEASURING IS THE #1 CAUSE OF FAILURE!! Pour into the tank, then immediately seal up the filler hole with Gladwrap and an elastic band. Swill the tank around in every direction for several minutes to obtain a good layer of Gas Tank Sealer over all surfaces. Remove the filler cap,Gladwrap seal, and pour out any excess. Allow to drain upside down for a few minutes. If you have a built in fuel filter, blow air into the fuel line port for about 10 minutes. This will clear the filter of any Gas Tank Sealer. Scrape off any excess with a sharp knife at this point (usually about 40-60 Min after mixing) Place the tank in a warm 70-90 f place and allow to cure overnight. In the case of alcohol fuels, allow 3-5 days at room temperature, or 24 hours at 120 deg f. 1 Pint Of Epoxy Gas Tank Sealer coats up to 2 x 5 gal tanks A few weeks ago you sent me your gas tank sealer kit. In the meantime, I have tried it and I just wanted to tell you that IT'S A GREAT PRODUCT! It worked perfectly well! Now I have a perfect gas tank again for about 40 US$ (including spray paint etc.). A local repair shop wanted about 1000 bucks (no kidding!) for welding and repainting the tank . So, I guess I made a good deal. Thanks a lot for providing such a great product and also for your excellent service. WE went out yetserday bout 15 or so miles from home, went to the mall, grabbed some lunch....needed gas......we fill up for the trip......tank was very close to empty...took 24 gallons...( venture van) Its always been reliable, no issues. we drive about 10 miles heading back towards home and decide to stop and get a quick oil change, since dale hasnt had time to do it himself. We pull inot the oil change place and just then the van starts sputtering, and running kind of rough. What the H*** ! We get the oil change and go to leave...van still sputtering....and theres a clicking, knocking noise. sputtering worse at low speeds or stops almost like its gonna stall out. not so bad at high speed.......make it home fine... Dale put a can of seafoam in tank...... we dont know whats wrong.....has a guy he knows gonna look at this morning. Im about fit to be tied ! hoping it isnt anything serious and soemthing we can fix easily and quickly......wondering if we got some bad gas? doesnt think its the spark plugs but a possibility. Did a quick online search for a car rental to drive to ohio just in case........ouch , blows my mind how much that costs! I cant imagine how mad i will be if i dont get to go home.......and its too late to ship presents, etc. ok, i needed to whine a little.........im done now........ anyone have any ideas what it could be?
  18. When I joined VentureRider.Org there weren't many entries in this section. I remember posting one about my XV920 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=204070#post204070 and now I have to eat crow and pay for my big mouth (Don, $25 dollar donation will be made today): I can't just explain one case of dropsies, I have to admit to myriad cases this year. Between my two bikes, I only travelled about 13,000 miles in the states during 2008. I was only in the U.S. for a total of 3 months this year. Here is a short synopsis I did for some friends: Quote- That motorcycle that looked so new in April is/has now: been dropped 5 times resulting in a cracked saddle bag left, scratches in the saddle bag right, twisted light bar and bent fog light right, scratches in the windshield, dents and scratches in the tank, bent engine guard rail right, bent saddle bag guard rail left, deep scratch on the front fender, nicks and scratches on the rear fender, bent brake lever right, bent clutch lever left, etc. Mostly cosmetic (will buy two new saddle bags and bigger and better engine guards). covered in bug splatters, mud and blood (I tried to avoid that bird). road grime and the dust and sand of all of the lands visited west of the Mississippi. Some statistics: I rode the motorcycle everyday from Aug 14 to Sep 30 for a total of 48 days (plus two more days to DC). We collected $515,000 on the Legacy Run this year. I rode through 25 states on this trip and covered a total of 10,116 miles. The majority of those miles were on non-interstate roads and I visted or camped in more national and state parks than I care to think of. After Aug 29th (end of Convention), I held to my 5 day camping, 2 day hotel (different hotel each day) rule. Spent 3 days on a campground in Bishop, CA (due to heavy winds wih gusts up to 70 mph) and 3 days on a campground in South Dakota (base camp for rides through the Black Hills, Badlands, Custer, Spearfish Canyon, Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Devil's Tower, etc.), otherwise just overnght camping. No days off for relaxation, no long sleep ins (time to ride), no days off sick. After leaving Phoenix (4 days of 1-1/2 to 2 inch per day rains) on Aug 29th, only had two nights of rain (one was a full blown storm where I wound up sleeping in water that had gotten in the tent) up until my arrival in DC today. Unquote No 1- happened just after crossing the Hoover Dam to the Nevada side. It was dark and after midnight and I had been running before a storm since Phoenix. I stopped at the Welcome Center to look for a hotel and as I was pulling out, a bunch of side by side lights came down the parking lot side I was planning to use to go to the exit. Thinking I was going in the wrong direction, I hit too much front brake while trying to do a quick U-turn and, yep, dropped it on the right side downward on the 6% sloping parking lot. In falling off, I fell on my back and banged the back of my helmet on the asphalt. I had also watched the various videos, but with a fully packed Riggpack with toproll, tent, mat, camping gear, gas can, sleeping bag and two very full hardbags on a decline, I wasn't sure if I could get it up (add 14 hours in the saddle to that). A bunch of young adults quickly ran over from the approaching vehicles and helped me get the bike back upright. I got the right mirror back on, readjusted the brake fluid reservoir and was on my way for a full two miles when I had to make my first right turn since the accident. The right pipes dragged as I went around the corner and then fell off (right rear cylinder pipe and end pipe). I got the pipes back on but one of the two exhaust seals involved had a leak. No. 2- There were strong winds on Highway 395 between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, with gusts up to a reported 70 mph. I was riding to Mammoth Lakes when a gust of wind knocked my magnetic map case off the gas tank. I slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder and stopped. As I was trying to put the kickstand down, a sudden gust of wind knocked me over with the motorcycle and she fell on her right side, banging my head on the ground. I didn't have any gear on her, so it was a snap to use the video method to get her back up. Scratches in the right hardbag this time. No. 3- Had left "Going to the Sun" and Glacier N.P. and visited the First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park in Ulm Mt. It was already dark when I went up, so I didn't see the signs about road conditions and that the park was closed at dusk. It was a dirt road with gravel and lots of ruts and with very steep parts going to the top of the plateau. While I was up there, a storm came up quickly with high winds, lightening and thunder. I quickly put up my tent to have some shelter. It rained heavily most of the night with hail and sleet. On the next morning, I traveled down a very steep, slick and slippery hill. I managed to get down to the fairly level part and was chugging along at about 5 mph when I hit a sea of mud in a curve and went down on my right side again, banging my head on the ground. The bike was on my right ankle and I had to push it off with my left foot. I have a bad right knee and had to turn over to my left side in order to get up, leaving me coated in mud. The bike was even heavier with about 50 pounds of mud caked on it and in every crevice, but I managed to get it up in spite of the slippery conditions. If I had thought anyone would have been traveling the road, I would have waited for some help, but desperation made me get her up. The bike was covered in mud, with mud under the floorboards, in the linkage, in the engine guard, over the top of the hardbag and i was having trouble walking because of the weight of the mud hanging on my clothing and boots. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), the gas station just down the road didn't have a car wash so I couldn't ride through one. It rained afterwards though and I was able to ride through the rain and puddles. No. 4- Later as I was heading down Rt 3 towards Moore/MT, a police car came screaming past and pulled to the shoulder in front of me with flashing lights. I automatically pulled to the shoulder somewhat flustered and slid off the asphalt onto the gravel. Bike went down on the right side and I went onto my head again on the decline. The deputy and a passerby were kind enough to help me pick the bike up (imagine a biker and bike covered in mud, showing a paper tag and running straight pipes) and the right pipe had again left the bike. The deputy had been after someone else and was preparing to make a turn when I crashed and burned in front of him. He had to call his supervisor because he felt he was partially at fault for the accident. As I was making my statement with his supervisor, the deputy put my pipe back on and it held for the 4,089 miles to DC. No 5- After I left all of the good riding in South Dakota, I traveled down the side roads. I stopped to get gas at one station and one set of pumps were closed due to low gas in those tanks. I did a slow turn to the next set, failed to see the danger of the rubber bell hose and had my front tire slip out on the rubber hose like it was slick ice. Went down on my left side this time and didn't bump my head for once. Had to readjust left clutch reservoir this time so I could use the mirror. Noticed the sadle bag guard was bent, but didn't think much of it. Found out at the next gas stop that the hard bag was broken and the side piece was actually flapping in the wind. I had packing tape, so I was able to make a temporary fix. I learned it happens a lot faster than you expect and that it really pays to wear a helmet. I have to admit, I only got run off the road once this year. Here is a map of my route: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=111006677486544509451.0004590d21ce3cc7b7512&ll=41.112469,-100.546875&spn=28.397066,54.492188&z=4 Here are some pictures of my trip in 2 albums: http://s342.photobucket.com/albums/o428/gypsy_moore/USA%20Tour%202008%20Part%201/?albumview=slideshow http://s342.photobucket.com/albums/o428/gypsy_moore/USA%20Tour%202008%20Part%201/USA%20Tour%202008%20Part%202/?albumview=slideshow Ride safe and ride with God.
  19. My son in law and I were going to ride today and when we started up gas poured out of his bike onto the ground. The bike is a 1996 Royal Star and it looks like the gas is coming out of the overflow from the carbs on the left side. I am thinking it is a stuck float, but we are having no luck on getting the problem resolved. We have the tank and air filter off the bike. Anyone have any tips on how to get this fixed?
  20. Hello fellow Venture's; My 2000 Venture will start easly with full choke, and while running on full choke when I twist gas, it wants to stall out. I can sometimes get an idle with chock off, but again when I try and give it gas it chokes out. Any suggestions.... Thanks for all your help.
  21. I noticed that some members bikes have a rack on the "gas tank" cover that actually covers the battery and air cleaner a little chrome rach that is similar to that on the trunk. Is that an aftermarket item or is it a part of the royale trim out package? I'd like to add one to my bike to make a tank bag easier to attach.
  22. I am thinking about going to Grandfather Mountain this weekend. I heard on the news that there is a gas shortage and alot of places are out of gas. Can anyone in North Carolina tell me if you are having a gas shortage and if not what the price of gas is there. Thanks P.S. This is for 1Rooster. If I decide to ride down I'll try to let you know.

    Fuel Tank Reserve

Does anyone know how much gas is left in the tank when it runs out of gas on the main and you switch to reserve?
  24. Just got back from Yamaha test ride at The Power Garage(new Yamaha dealer) in Woodstock Ontario. They had about 15 bikes-- took out the Warrior(not for me) then finally got to drive a second generation Venture. Now I know what everyone is complaining about the WWWWHHHHIIINNNEEE talk about annoying, could hardly pay attention to radio and driving.Bike only had 195klms on it.If this whine is that bad on other peoples bikes I'm glad I didn't buy one .Was fine as long as I didn't give it gas but I wouldn't have gone anywhere otherwise.Talked to rep about it and he said it has been this way since beginning and will probably be that way until new model(maybe)He would like to also see the new V-max engine put in it.
  25. I noticed the other day a wet spot under the bike and it was gas, it doesnt do it all the time and I smell gas alot on it since it was new. I stopped by dealer and talked to them and they said that they do that alot and uptil this year if they change the needle in the carb and something else it has been taking care of it, but he said since they have changed the formula on gas he is seeing more of it this year than before. Anyone have this problem? Thanks Kevin
